Speedy deletion nomination of Amy Pence-Brown edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Amy Pence-Brown, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. • The reason this is seen as promotional is because the article takes a very praising, positive tone towards Pence-Brown. This is likely because the article is very heavily reliant on her website as a source - keep in mind that official websites are almost always going to be written to promote the specific viewpoint or person.
On this note, I'm concerned that there aren't really any reliable sources out there that are independent of Pence-Brown and people or organizations affiliated with her. When she is mentioned, it's usually in passing and she's not the main focus of the source. Offhand there doesn't seem to be enough sourcing out there to establish how she's notable. Notes edit

Hi, here are some notes as to why the content was removed, as well as some general notes:

  • You switched between using her last and first name - in general only the last name should be used. Exceptions to this would be for people who are known under a specific name (Dr. Ruth, Madonna) or when there's an article about an entire family and we need to use the first names to distinguish between then.
  • This takes a very positive, praising tone towards Pence-Brown. I can see where you've toned down the writing, but there are still some issues with this. I can help with this, however I have some other concerns that will also need to be resolved.
  • The article has some statements that can be seen as controversial. For example, the statement "Pence-Brown, like many other woman, did not accept her body for what it was." could be challenged since it comes across as a blanket statement. Something like this would need to be sourced with something that explicitly stated this and would also need to be written fairly carefully. We could write something like "Pence-Brown began promoting body positivity due to her experiencing difficulties accepting her own body, something she states is common for many women." With this the emphasis is placed on it being something Pence-Brown is claiming, although we would still need to be careful of tone.
  • One of the main concerns is one of notability, as there is not really enough sourcing that can establish notability. Here's a runthrough of the sourcing:
  • This, this, this, and this are primary sources, as they were created by Pence-Brown or by people or organizations affiliated with her. The TEDx Talk wouldn't be seen as non-primary or something that could give notability, although coverage of her talk could.
  • This is a self-published source and in order to use it we would need to establish where it's routinely seen as a reliable source by other reliable sources such as academic and scholarly sources.
  • Goodreads is typically not seen as a reliable source for several reasons. One is that it's very easy for people to create accounts and leave ratings - or create new listings for books and authors. Also, when it comes to just just book listings, WorldCat is better for this purpose.
  • The HuffPo source is fine since it was written by a staff member, but not enough on its own to establish notability.
  • The IBR Award is a little iffy, since it's a local award - if we can show where others have covered the award it may be able to establish some notability - otherwise it may be seen as too minor of an award (as far as Wikipedia goes).
  • Bustle has been an iffy source on Wikipedia. Some say that it's usable, others say that it's not, so it's something that can be usable but wouldn't be the strongest or best source to use. This covers the event discussed in the HuffPo source, so there would need to be more coverage beyond the event in order to show that she's notable for more than this one event.

Ideally the sourcing would be non-local sourcing, as much of what I'm finding so far is local and/or tends to cover the bikini/heart event. ([1], [2], [3], [4]) If we could find a couple of reviews for her books in places like academic/scholarly journals, newspapers, and the like, then that would help solidify her notability. I hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:36, 18 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • @Shalor (Wiki Ed): this student uploaded a photo of the subject as their own work. Is this actually the case? It does not appear they've taken your advice as they moved it right back into mainspace.Praxidicae (talk) 20:49, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • I am not certain - it looks like a publicity photograph so I don't believe that it would be. Smith554, when it comes to images, we can only claim an image if we ourselves have taken the photograph or created the artwork in question. Otherwise, the image must be properly attributed and it must also have been released under a license that would be compatible with Wikimedia Commons, which is typically the public domain or a Creative Commons license that allows commercial use and adaptations of the work. This training module goes over the basic guidelines of uploading images and the copyright requirements.
I've done some quick cleanup, however I'm still concerned about Pence-Brown's notability. I think it would be best to move it back to your userspace and work on finding more sourcing beyond the coverage for the performance art. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:18, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Shalor (Wiki Ed) I don't know what their requirement is for the class but I can say that I do not believe Pence to be notable and would AFD it were it to remain in mainspace. Perhaps the student can pick another subject? Praxidicae (talk) 21:20, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Praxidicae, the class is pretty much over so I don't know if they will start on another article, however they're graded on effort and not what "sticks" so it's not absolutely vital that they have work live. Now as far as notability goes, I share the same concerns. Pence-Brown has received some coverage for a piece of performance art she has done, but that seems to largely be the only coverage she has received so I'm kind of concerned that this would be a one event type of deal. December 2019 edit

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to remove speedy deletion notices from pages you created yourself, you may be blocked from editing. Praxidicae (talk) 20:58, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Smith554: Please stop editing and respond here- several of your edits are disruptive and you're headed toward a block. Please address the concerns from me and Shalor, particularly the photo you've uploaded. Praxidicae (talk) 21:03, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your suggestions. I started editing it from a less promotional point of view. I am stating facts about her now and citing them. I would like to know why there is still an issue with this article. I feel like the changes I made meet the criteria. Thank you.

It is still highly promotional and you have not provided independent reliable sources. Please make a draft and submit it through WP:AFC. Additionally, did you actually physically take this photo? Praxidicae (talk) 21:17, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
