Citation guidelines edit

Hi, I noticed you recently edited the Beginners guide to referencing and made a comment (that made me laugh) about how confusing the documentation is. I've found it that way myself and am trying to help clarify it on the Wikipedia:Citing sources at the moment (see talk page "Quick how-to guide"). Thought you might be interested if you haven't noticed it there already. Cheers, EverSince (talk) 23:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

BYD Auto edit

Hey, You deleted an external link to "posts tagged 'BYD' at autoblog" from the BYD Auto page. I defend its inclusion per WP:EL & WP:SPS.

WP:EL What to link states:

There are several things that should be considered when adding an external link.

  • Is the site content accessible to the reader?
  • Is the site content proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)?
  • Is the link functional and likely to remain functional?

WP:EL, Links normally to be avoided No. 11 states:

Links to blogs, personal web pages and most fansites, except those written by a recognized authority (this exception is meant to be very limited; as a minimum standard, recognized authorities always meet Wikipedia's notability criteria for biographies).

and WP:SPS states to the effect that: the blog of an established expert (who has been) published in reliable third-party publications is an acceptable source.

so, if you still consider the external link something that should not be included in the page, please explain why. Or don't, I won't undo your edit unless you agree it is a valid external link per WP:EL.

Thanks for the swift response, I don't think the e6 is in production, I believe that BYD wants to produce and sell the model in Europe in 2010. I could be wrong about the latter, but I'm pretty sure about the former: the BYD e6 is not (yet) a production car, much like the Chevy Volt is not a production car. These cars aren't mass-produced or sold to the public, thus I doubt they can be considered "production" cars.

As to the external links, I actually looked for BYD tags on jalopnik, but not hard enough it seems. In any case, there are serious questions that can be raised in regards to including either or both blogs. They may not be factual, as they often post rumors, though may label them as such. They may not be written by recognized authorities or established experts, and the blogs in questions may not qualify as "self published sources", so other rules may apply.

HTML character entities edit

Re this edit - it's not always a good idea to use the HTML character entity references, since there are bots which will convert them to the actual character itself, which is of course the undesired behaviour. The use of {{!}} is a definite safeguard against that.

If the page reached shows "BBC News | Business ..." in the title bar at the top of the window, then this usually suggests that this should be considered as two separate items, and split into different parameters for the {{cite web}} template - |work=BBC News |title=Business ... --Redrose64 (talk) 12:28, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for noticing. I didn't put in the suggestion to use the HTML entity, I just added the value of it, without which the sentence was incomplete. As for the pipe symbol, yours is an interesting idea to use work=, but {{cite web}} doesn't suggest this, so I always give the full title of the web page as it helps people find the page when companies re-do their web site. Maybe there's a better example — I've seen lots of sites where the page title is broken up by several pipe symbols. Cheers! -- Skierpage (talk) 09:04, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nudecline edit

Thank you for your improvements to the Charging station article. But I would suggest you not leave taunting messages like that (or any messages, for that matter) on this banned user's Talk page. It might only encourage him to come back, under another sock or IP identity, and resume editing, in violation of his indef ban, yet again. thank you, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 21:56, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, I removed anything that might be construed as taunting. Is it Wikipedia policy to not post on banned users' Talk pages? Whether someone is banned or not, explaining what they've done wrong seems useful and is good info for other people coming across their edits and looking at their Talk pages. -- Skierpage (talk) 22:23, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. No, there's certainly no policy that one shouldn't leave messages on a banned user's Talk page. It's just my own preference, which you're free to disregard. Sort of a very liberal application of WP:DENY, I guess. I say this because Mac (Nudecline) has come back at least a couple of times since his last ban as "Hamiltha" as an IP (or so I suspect) and I'd like us to not offer him any encouragement or attention. But again, that's just my own view, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 22:33, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for July 13 edit

Hi. When you recently edited HTML5 Audio, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wired (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Album producer template edit

To answer your question: yes. What do you think of my solution? How can I make it better? This has been a back-burner thing for many years for me. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 00:47, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

By the by, please use {{ping}} if you respond here. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:00, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Koavf: thanks for noticing. Cool, any template is usually better than nothing. Compared with Category:Albums produced by Arif Mardin, your {{albumprod}}:
  1. Makes the page more top-heavy but I guess the blue note box is important.
  2. I don't think the italic and indent hatnote style on "Albums produced by Super Producer" adds anything – this text merely repeats the H1 page title to provide verbiage around the desired link to the producer's page. Hatnote doc says "Broadly speaking, a hatnote should answer a readers' question (maybe preemptively): Am I on the right page?", but the title has already answered that, so unnecessary formatting of this line just makes the page busier. 1,000,000+ edits? Get some rest ;-) -- Skierpage (talk) 09:27, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Skierpage, Thanks. I should get some rest. Sweet dreams yourself, Ski. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 10:16, 29 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for February 15 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Lotus Elan, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Top Gear. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Thanks, bot. I fixed the YouTube citation to say the video is published by Top Gear (magazine), but asked on the Talk:Top Gear (2002 TV series).
