Hi Sammy, this is your favorite niece- hope I found you on the net! I heard that you're planning to coming to my wedding- my question now is, are you? Thomas and I would be thrilled, of course! I heard you had some contact to Ursula, and she tried mailing to you but didn't receive an answer. If you're coming, when will you arrive here? How many nights are you planning on staying? Concerning your Portal Proposal

I noticed you proposed Portal:Presenting Wikipedia and it was summarily blocked by those who opposed it. This appears to have been in violation of Wikipedia's policy Wikipedia is not censored. Language template

edit

Hi Sj. Are you aware of Brian0918 and Raul's renewed attempt to cut languages from the Main Page language template? There is a discussion at Talk:Main Page that you might want to add your thoughts to. It also seems to me that this is an especially insensitive move heading into Wikimania, where we are attempting to demonstrate Wikipedia's internationalism and the English Wikipedia's (and its many American users) sensitivity to other Wikipedias. WP:1.0

edit

Hey, Sj. Hopefully you're now back to normal after Wikimania. However, we need a bit of help from the SPC/Static version subcommittee here. Could you tell us what you think would be the way to proceed there? Oh, and you may want to remove the spam above... I tried to revert it, but I would have to remove and repost too many edits... Titoxd(?!?) 22:52, 8 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

If I can butt in on this conversation, the 1.0 folks who met at Wikimania (Kirill & I, Tomas from Poland and Emmanuel from France) agreed we should set up a sub-page off the Static Version meta page where we would discuss these things. I've been very busy this week but hopefully one of us can get something put up there soon - a lot of ideas for 1.0 came out of Wikimania. In the meantime, Sj, re our discussion on validation etc, perhaps you could take a look at Wikipedia:Pushing to validation which reflects how I saw the consensus emerging. Please forgive my intrusion - thanks, Walkerma 03:20, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to you both. I've commented a bit on that page; the general validation consensus looks excellent. We should be careful not to talk about "uneditable revision" -- mediawiki stores all revisions, making each of them effectively uneditable. There is a UI question of how to show certain people a consistent revision once it's flagged as stable/validated, but this is interface and not core code. +sj + 15:50, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

August Esperanza Newsletter

edit
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Hello: in early July, I attended the National Educators' Computing Conference in San Diego and was thrilled to hear about the $100 Laptop initiative at Nicholas Negroponte's address! I could see an immediate fit with SelfDesign, a dynamic online school run by Wondertree Foundation, a non-profit society. SelfDesign presently serves learners in British Columbia, Canada and is poised to attract children of all nations. Our bottom-up learning model is deeply rooted in the passion of learners and our Village of Conversations is a rich environment with a multitude of learning opportunities from peers and mentors. In discussions with our leadership team, we found a great fit between the $100 Laptop initiative and SelfDesign. We are prepared to offer access to our online Village of Conversations to any child on the planet with a laptop from your program (and are willing to negotiate non-profit sponsorship or support to fund this access). We can envision a world of educational opportunity here for children of all nations--a voice for all and a connection with a literate and passionate learning community. Please find below a letter to Nicholas Negroponte (originally sent earlier this month) from Brent Cameron, SelfDesign Founder and Executive Director, providing further details about SelfDesign. I looking forward with anticipation to a chance to discuss this exciting opportunity further with your organization.

Darrell Letourneau SelfDesign Executive dletourneauATselfdesign_DOT_org

Hello Nicholas,

A colleague of mine just attended a conference in the US and informed me about the One Laptop Per Child initiative. It sounds very exciting and I think an significantly important initiative. I would like to support your work by introducing to you our projects in Canada. For the past 23 years we have been researching a whole new way of thinking about learning. We have been using computers and laptops as integral aspects in our program as we do education entirely differently than schooling. We have won numerous Canadian National Awards for our unique use of technology in education.

I have written a book illustrating what it is that is so unique to make it a new paradigm for learning, and a 'beyond schooling' model. Our methodology is aligned with a global, ecologically oriented learning community model where communities of people nurture the enthusiasm of children to learn in the context of living and engaging in the world.

I would like to offer you a copy of our book as an invitation to discuss how our work could help rethink how laptops in the hands of children around the world could be most profoundly used.

Currently we are offering a unique learning community experience for over 400 learners in BC. It could be a prototype for your global initiative. For example in BC there are over 30 distance or distributed learning programs that use the internet and computers to broadcast the same curriculum in schools to children sitting at computers at home. SelfDesign does not offer curriculum or distribute learning. Our internet village is a context for recursive conversations that support the natural enthusiasm of all children to explore and discover themselves in their world.

This model is from the book SelfDesign: Nurturing Genius Through Natural Learning and you can find out more about us on our website - www.selfdesign.org. Please let me know where to send a copy of my book and I will mail it immediately.

Thanks for the note on my talk page. I really like your proposed solution, and have put a note of support for it in the AFD discussion. Great job! Fairsing 00:31, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hold on. The final result of the AFD process was a keep, which means that the 'Enterprise 2.0 article stays as a separate article. To quote Phil: "The result was keep. The arguments for deletion are not to my mind persuasive, and it turns out that rather than being a neologism, the term has in fact been around for some time. There is no question that we need an article about this subject..." Could you please honor this decision and restore the most recent version of the Enterprise 2.0 article?Amcafee 22:58, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to bug you again, but can you provide any insight on who was involved in the final deletion review -- the one that resulted in the 'keep' and the message from Phil -- and how it was conducted? It's the only part of the process that doesn't seem completely transparent to me. Am I just not looking in the right place?Amcafee 21:53, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Apologies re: CVU MfD Debate

edit

As I wrote on pschemp's talk page, I feel I owe you a similar apology and explanation:

"You're right in that my "debate" with John on the CVU MfD was becoming all-consuming, was bordering on the personal level, and was beginning to disrupt the flow of the MfD itself. I apologize for my part in causing any such disruption, and -- for my blood pressure, if for nothing else -- I'll agree to stay off the page until it runs its course. That said, I am somewhat hurt by your suggestion that "everyone is tired" of my contributions and/or that they are "adding nothing to the debate." By most accounts my arguments have been the entire debate on behalf of the "Delete" side of the coin. As before, I apologize for losing my temper and for being the least bit disruptive. But I would argue that my "disruption" of that argument was the result of getting constantly badgered and baited into it by the other user in question. I know and realize I should have been the better man and not responded on the page. But no one else was arguing back, so I felt compelled to defend myself. At this point I'm rambling, but the point is, I'm backing off, and I'm sorry if you were offended or annoyed."

Sincerely and respectfully, Dr Chatterjee 00:43, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

But perhaps I did not understand what you meant :-) +sj + 21:42, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think you understand me, we just disagree about the conclusion. :) Elements that are strongly for different audiences should usually be different products. It's roughly like combining a Ferrari with a Hummer.
I am OK with the combination as long as the "good" does not outweigh the "important". That turns the project into a different animal. Maurreen 21:54, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. Anarchopedia

edit

Hi,

With all due respect, I don't understand what could confuse you regarding the decision. There was a consensus to delete based on the lack of verifible, reliable sources. The cite couldn't be a source for itself, and those citations where the only ones available at the time I deleted the thing.

I'll be the first to admit that I know little about life outside of the English 'pedia, but the presence of articles in other languages has never really occurred to me as being significant. While WP:V binds all 'pedias, I've always thought the the particulars of what constituted a reliable source for a certain classes of article could vary between different language 'pedias, as it varies also between academic cultures in different countries.

In this case, Anarchopedia was deleted as part of an effort to increase the stringency of requiring third-party reliable sources -- other 'pedias might not yet have adopted this stringency, and may not do so; but, English 'pedia is moving in that direction in an effort, among other reasons, to gain academic respect.

I haven't looked at your stub yet, but I won't touch it; others might, of course. Best wishes, Xoloz 09:52, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The stub is also lacking verifiable reliable sources, really, both as to existence and (more crucially, because we do know it exists) notability. There is a guideline for webpage notability, WP:WEB, that AfD applied in this case. If you hadn't personally intervened, I would G4 this, but oh well... somebody will probably catch it soon anyway. Xoloz 09:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I've noticed something -- You're a fellow "H-bomber!" :) I'm a former proud resident of Canaday and Leverett Towers myself. This has only increased my sense of colleagial regard for you, obviously, so I feel comfortable being frank: I think you've got this one wrong, and think I Wikipedia is better off if I CSD G4 this thing. This AfD closure is consistent with notability guidelines -- looking at your contribution history and considering your confusion over the AfD closure, you might be a bit out-of-touch with the increased strictness in enforcing reliable source requirements. I'm going to go ahead and G4 your stub, trusting that no Harvardian would take such a thing personally. Being a physicist adept and a Bostonian, if you ever run into Howard Georgi, tell him he is anonymously loved! ;) Best wishes, Xoloz 22:30, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Anarchopedia re-creation

edit

I echo the above concerns about the re-creation of Anarchopedia. In particular, I don't see that the concerns brought up in the AfD, lack of verifiability in particular, has been addressed. Anyway, I wanted to let you know, and obviously to ask for long-term help during the next 4 years. Anyway, the title is Cooperation in Emergent Cognition of Socio-technological networks, the case of wikipedia. This is a really bad idea. in fact, the Wikipedia:Guide to deletion says really clearly "Please do not refactor the discussion into lists or tables of recommendations, however much you may think that this helps the process." Thanks mate.
brenneman {L} 04:23, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure why Uncle G said this is a bad idea, but a) he clearly meant this to apply to VfD, and b) this kind of refactoring is occasionally quite helpful, with votes of any kind -- particularly in cases where people are tqalking across one another and voting on or discussing very different things in the same space. As happened here. +sj + 14:33, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

chemwiki

edit

Hi, I got your name from Martin Walker, who told me you also have an account on his chemwiki, and he suggested you might be interested/capable in helping us with some new extensions.

I have written a specialpage similar to the special:booksources-page, but then for a set of chemical identifiers (CAS, InChI, etc.), and an extension to make writing chemical formulae in a mediawiki more easy (http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chemistry). Currently I am writing some more, specialistic tags, which might be appropriate on a chemical wiki.

We would like the specialpage to be enabled on en.wikipedia.org, it would give an opportunity to remove a lot of bias in external links (see also at least three of the discussions on my talk-page). The <chemform>-tags would be nice, but not really necessary. I currently have no public place to test these or show it to the public (I run three mediawikis on my laptop, but cannot open them to the public for the moment). For the last couple of days I have been bugging Tim and Brion on IRC, but they seem to be very busy.

Could you help me, e.g. finding a mediawiki where I could show the function of these extensions to the (chemical) public (chemwiki would be great, but it is quite a basic install, though it should work there)? Cheers! --Dirk Beetstra T C 22:33, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?

edit

I have a bit of trouble with your last edits to the most important document on wp... you added "You may see something offensive before it gets moderated out." There's a problem with this sentence in that many things that would be offensive to many people are never "moderated out" -- i.e. all the sex articles. Also, "This is the Internet" is a) rude, and b) untrue. "This" (wp) is *not* the internet! On the internet at large, you can't edit most things. I'd change it to be softer: "wikipedia may contain offensive material." I'd edit it myself except for that dratted lack of adminship. -- phoebe 01:07, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Captcha

edit

Hello Samuel! I'm administrator at portuguese wikipedia and I want to propose the use of Captcha there, but I have some doubts. I've seen the Captcha when an anonymous (IP) try to create a new user account (like here) or when he try to insert a link of a web page. Can I configure it to use the Captcha when an IP edit or try to create a page? Thanks for your attention (and sorry about my English). Giro720 1 December 2006 (UTC)

No, I'd like implement captcha for creating new pages and editing old pages. Can I configure it to work like that? And only for new pages? I'm trying to understand the options of captcha configuration before expose the ideia to the community. Thanks. Giro720 2:58, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

--Battroid 09:55, 16 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Version 0.5

edit

Hi Sj, how are you! Just to let you know, V0.5 should be coming out later this month. If we at WP:1.0 can help with your laptop project, please let me know. Cheers, Walkerma 04:27, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I take your point about being over the kids heads. Also, when you review the pages flagged for possible vandalism (we have a script for that) it's amazing how many contain (legitimate_ bad language, as well as adult topics such as discussions of the person's extra-marital affairs, sexuality, etc., much of which would be considered inappropriate for kids. My seven year old likes WP - she reads extremely well but she mainly likes the pictures! (We scaled the pictures down to actual size for V0.5, so we include 8000 pictures along with software and 1964 articles in our 421 MB). User:BozMo is probably the most knowledgable on kid's releases, and his release is coming out on 23rd, though it runs to two CDs in size. I've often thought that we should have a separate Wikipedia for kids - I don't mean the simple English one, but one which focuses on topics kids like, rigorously excludes inappropriate topics, and has lots of pictures.
In the meantime, you have to work with what we have! I think a good starting point would be Wikipedia:Version 0.5/Geography, you could miss out US national park stuff and some of the misc/history. I've realized that nearly all articles tend to be written from a geographical standpoint - "X was an [[Ireland|Irish]] painter, born in Dublin, who worked extensively in Switzerland, painting the Alps" etc, - so it's important to have a good base of places. In V0.5 we have all countries of the world and all global cities. For something going mainly to Africa, you should probably aim to include all capital cities too, as well as major mountain ranges & deserts (these sadly got missed off 0.5) - and you might want to take a look over this list, which I plan to nominate soon for V0.7. BozMo was right about what kids will want to read about (and look at pictures of) - his 2006 Wikipedia CD Selection focused on places, science, animals and dinosaurs, and plants (& let's not forget bugs - a favorite of my daughter!).
I think I'd like to see us have a script that pulls out the lead paragraph of each article. That would allow us to make a CD that contains perhaps 10-20,000 articles with a few pictures. I understand you have severe space restrictions too, and of course for kids you really want to include at least one picture per article if possible.
If you want me to pick out an "editor's choice" - the "must have" portion of Version 0.5 (aimed at kids if you like), I'd be happy to oblige when I get an evening free - let me know. I pretty much know every article on the CD - sad, isn't it!
Oh, by the way, I'm doing a 3 hour workshop on wikis at the 2007 CIT, in Plattsburgh. I would've contacted you, but I only thought to check the abstract submission date on what turned out to be the last day! Cheers, Walkerma 03:37, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Agreed about a children's version of WP; I'm interested in such a thing as well. Pulling just the lead paragraph of each article is a good idea, and would make articles roughly equivalent to some current children's encyclopedias. I left a note on your talk page as well. -- phoebe (brassratgirl) /(talk) 01:19, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
BozMo pointed this out to me; not sure why I didn't already know about this. phoebe/(talk) 21:20, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hello again. I wanted to check in with you before I plunge into preparing a list of articles (for the Children's Machine?) chosen from V0.5. Do you want articles selected mainly on importance? Do you want them to be specifically kid-friendly? (That could be pretty hard, as I mentioned above, unless you run some cleanup scripts) Do you want the list to have a particular emphasis - for example nature, places, or African topics? The other main issue is size. Many of our best articles are (a) long and (b) full of pictures. Will you chop down the articles somehow? Will you pick a just handful of pictures from each article? Let me know, and I'll work on this list during the coming week. BTW, V0.5 is finally supposed to come out tomorrow, if the bank can get things done by then.
I had a great time in Chicago, met lots of good people. I know how you love metadata - take a look at this. Cheers, Walkerma 04:13, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Luckily, it's very simple. As a judge you'll be determining whether or not a contestant's article is on a well-known topic or a not well-known topic (based on the amount of info available... I use a Google search, plus I determine how niche the topic is). If there is no stub template or WikiProject evaluation, you determine whether or not the article is a stub, start, or B-level article. Although officially not part of the job, I'd recommend also being the one who evaluates said articles for GA status when that time comes. I'll be the one who gives out the money. :) Signed, your friendly neighborhood MessedRocker. 02:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Glad you're still with us! (i had assumed Sj=Essjay)

edit

Hi SJ, we briefly met offline at Wikimania 2005. i've just been reading about User:Essjay Jan 2006 archival copy and i only just now discovered that you're not the same person... i didn't know him very well as a wikipedian, but looking at his userpage, i have to say his "claims" of being a Theology professor do look a bit satirical, or else as he said, he was an extremely "liberal" theology professor... i actually find it rather funny, and probably rather revealing about the nature of "knowledge" regarding Catholicism - if someone could pretend to be a Catholic theology professor for so long without being outed, is there really any serious knowledge in the field, or just blabla? Anyway, please make sure you have proof of your status as a Nobel laureat in physics and Fields medal in maths before you're outed ;). Or make valid edits and noone will care... i noticed that maths pages on the wikipedia tend to be weak in external references - because it's analytical knowledge, not synthetical knowledge, i guess. cheers, Boud 17:39, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

As I mentioned in a blog post about the situation, I'm disappointed in the community's treatment of the developments; his page was indeed a bit satirical, and his important contributions did not hinge on putative expertise that only such a professor would have... I will try to improve the maths pages when I have more time - they need more than just references, they need elegant explanations rather than simply logical sequences of facts. Thanks for saying hello; +sj + 06:04, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Essjay, a gay professor of theology?

Hi Sammy, just kind of stumbled upon that Essjay-Story and loved it. How did you manage to keep your face straight through that interview? Thomas suspected he might have been the role model for Essjay, but since Essjay's Catholic, I assured him there could be no chance of that... Please do not misplace speedy tags; this does not help the encyclopedia or its editors. The 'hangon' template is not for misapplied speedy tags -- anyone can remove a misapplied tag, including the author. Lists, even unencyclopedic ones, do not automatically qualify for speedy deletion. +sj + 00:18, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The speedy deletion tag and the AfD were both appropriately placed; any removal should have been (and was eventually correctly) done by an administrator, not by the article's creator. dcandeto 04:26, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
As Stephen noted when removing your speedy tag, 'unencyclopedic' and 'WP:NOT' are not speedy criteria. Please don't abuse that tag. +sj +

Wheel warring

edit

You have just involved yourself in the biggest bout of wheel warring I've seen on Wikipedia. That you have not discussed anything yourself, and yet tell other people to "Please discuss before wheel warring" really isn't helping things. I suggest you desist immediately, and familiarize yourself with the extensive discussion on the topic, e.g. at the admin board. >Radiant< 14:22, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yep, I was about to add that link. >Radiant< 14:43, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
And yes, it is wheel warring to undo another's admin action once, especially if that action had already been done and undone by others a few times. I think you're quite aware of that, or you wouldn't have asked other people to "not wheel war" while you were wheel warring yourself. It's highly inappropriate that you're unwilling to as much as explain yourself, other than by stating that you apparently think the end justifies the means. >Radiant< 08:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for your random acts of BJAODN sanity -- cheers! — Matt Crypto 20:17, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. How are we supposed to create BJAODN Mark II with BLP and GFDL compliance if only admins are allowed to see the old pages? I'm personally in support of this - it's no more contentious than the decision to remove them (without discussion) in the first place. Orderinchaos 10:08, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Incoming ArbCom, Sj. It really was quite ridiculous that you admonished to "stop wheel warring" while wheel warring yourself over dozens of pages. Considering how long you've been with the project, you should really know better. --Cyde Weys 01:22, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ha! image deleted for CSD G10: Image was only used to reward editors for wheel warring. Fascinatingly, G10 is apparently the criteria for "Attack pages. Eleventy billion

edit

I disagree. This pool is just another instance of the "make semi-funny guesses for an arbitrary large number of articles" pools. Such pools are in effect all alike, so the same arguments apply to all of them. If MFD decides to delete the "squillion pool" and somebody creates a "bazillion pool" that is essentially the same, then the same MFD applies. >Radiant< 11:23, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Did you read the deletion discussions in which most delete votes mentioned "delete since we already have the eleventy-billion pool"? That's the argument that doesn't apply.
Of course I did, and you apparently did not, or you would know that in four debates combined, a grand total of two delete commenters mention the EBP. >Radiant< 10:36, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I count seven. It's not the number of them that matters, it's the fact that the last deletion discussion ended in a speedy keep based on a reading of those previous discussions. It seems quite obvious to me that few people fail to appreciate the humor of the eleventy-billion pool or similar elements of wp-humor. Unfortunately, the deletionists in this case keep on bringing up the point and occasionally quietly deleting heavily-edited articles without discussion. I wish you wouldn't support this. +sj + 15:02, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, no. The last deletion discussion was unanimously in favor of deletion, based on a reading of those previous discussions. I am quite in favor of humoristic pools, such as the 500th language one or the Last Topic Pool; it's just that arbitrary lists aren't funny. See also Uncyclopedia:How To Be Funny And Not Just Stupid. >Radiant< 15:33, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I meant the last informed deletion discussion. Almost every one of those votes was misinformed or (in the case of speedies) against policy, having been confused by the out of process speedy that preceeded it and the biased framing of the situation in the MfD nomination. Let's take a look:

Was deleted months ago, [ out of process --sj ] but undeleted yesterday by User:Sj as part of his massive wheel warring spree (see WP:ANI for details). Of course, Astroguy is involved in this page as well. Suggest deletion once again; we have way too many of these mostly-identical pools [ there are no other humorous article pools; this is the equiv of the 500th lang / last topic pool for articles --sj ], and the joke fell flat after the first few.

  • Delete, not useful. This should be speedied per CSD G4. John Vandenberg 09:30, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Not a speedy candidate. Humerous project articles shouldn't be judged by 'useful'.

OLPC content

edit

Earlier today, I sat in on Mary Lou Jepsen's concluding talk at Usenix on the OLPC project, and got a chance to see the prototype she'd brought from China. We should talk sometime about where OLPC is going, preloadable-content-wise, and what that project needs help with... seems like an excellent thing to spend some volunteer time pushing forwards. I don't use IRC much anymore (not sure if I have a working client anywhere, but I could fix that). I agree that a wikiproject for OLPC might be a good thing to do... Georgewilliamherbert 22:13, 5 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! As a member of the Wikipedia 1.0 Review Team, I frequent #wikipedia-1.0. I noticed that for 47 weeks, no channel operator has logged on. I contacted Sean W about getting access, and he told me that it wasn't his place to grant me operator status. He suggested that I contact an operator of the channel with an access level of 30; that would be you!

So if you could grant me operator status, I would be grateful. Thanks! Greeves (talk contribs) 20:27, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Redirects with potential

edit

I was reading the mailing list and spotted this in one of your posts (well, I hope I have the right Sj): "Finally, do we need a variant of #REDIRECT that clearly identifies that the original title should have its own separate article someday, but doesn't now? something that allows links to still show up as red in MediaWiki?" - I think you are looking for Category:Redirects with possibilities, which is applied with {{R with possibilities}}. Hope that helps. Carcharoth 15:27, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Static content

edit

Hi,

I have started a project on the Romanian Wikipedia to deliver the content of the Romanian version on CD. Due to a probable lack of resources (mainly human), I was hoping to keep the first release as simple as possible, namely to use the snapshots at http://static.wikipedia.org/ . However, this puts up the problem of trademarks. I would like to know the limitations on the use the html dump, knowing that there is no Romanian Wikimedia (although there are plans to create it). We don't plan to sell the CDs, but rather donate them to libraries and interested NGOs. I'm writing to you because you seem to be in the static content committee. If I got the wrong person, I apologize.

Thanks in advance for your help. -- Strainu

OLPC goals

edit

Hi,

I was referred to you when I asked on the OLPC wiki about how Wikipedians could help. I have a reasonable amount of Wikipedia experience, and I've heard that some parts of Wikipedia may make it on to the XO. Do you have any concrete information about how Wikipedia will be involved with OLPC? Is there anything that a Wikipedian can do to help the OLPC project? I have good copyediting, technical writing, and wiki skills, though I'm unfortunately monolingual. Thanks. -- Creidieki 02:44, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

WikiWax

edit

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article WikiWax, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Savidan 19:39, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Intentional Software

edit

A tag has been placed on Intentional Software, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD a7.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. carelesshx talk 21:15, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please review meta humor

edit

Sj: Could you do us all a favor? Please review and get rid of the pages in http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Humor that are not funny. Just get rid of the stuff that is not entertaining and is just tedious. I can appreciate geeky humor but most of that stuff out-of-date is not funny. It is just drivel. Go read some of it and ask yourself: Do I really laugh at this? Do I really feel better after reading it for its humor value as opposed to maybe its nostalgia value? Look at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=laughter+is+the+best+medicine . But that pile of humor mostly stinks to a point of being life-shortening rather than the other way around. If you do not have time, do you maybe have a trusted apprentice you could task with the job? I am not frustrated, but I would expect that for some frustrated new users, it would lead to them punting rather than collaborating.--Agentareas 09:27, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's alright, Lar. Agentareas, I'll take a look; I find that many new users are impatient and have a strong reaction to humor that doesn't suit them. Most of these end up deleting pages that both have long tradition behind them and that many contributors find funny. What I am most perplexed by is not the middling quality of humor on funny pages, but the rage and frustration that unappreciated humor incites in some. (perhaps not in you, but in the people whose frustration you hope to alleviate). +sj + 18:29, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

banners! (from meta)

edit

thanks for the offer to make wikimania 2008 banners... perhaps a variety of banners for different contexts would be useful. I still have my talk-page 'header' from wikimaina 2006, which was fun for promotion... see my talk page on en. +sj | help with translation |+ 22:57, 6 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I have made one seen here. I have an animated banner in progress. Yet, my issue is that whenever I make banners, no one ever uses them (or few people use them) as seen with the Wikimedia Commons banner. We can take a vote to see which banners are most popular, translate them into popular languages (this will be at a later point in time in the year), and see how it will go. We need merchandise, too. How about Cafe Press merchandising? Miranda 10:14, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Editing your subpage

edit

Sj, to explain why I'm editing User:Sj/olpc dictionary images/100, I am moving free images to the commons, and bungled a move: I didn't check whether an image that I moved (local en:Image:brush.jpg to commons:Image:Paintbrushes.jpg) and changed the name of here would conflict with another local image (en:Image:Paintbrushes.jpg). So, until the local copy of the conflicting image has been deleted (which I have requested) I've had to temporarily remove references to the name, as they are pointing to an unintended file. I'll put them back asap. Sorry for editing your subpage! Cheers, and I hope this explanation wasn't too confusing. --Storkk (talk) 15:57, 13 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
