Language on front page

—Dear Simon, I think your information is really useful, but I have an 11 year old using the site and your quote has offensive language. Could that be changed/fixed? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.177.11.199 (talkcontribs)

Hi. Had a think about this one and I've decided to keep the material as is. See WP:NOT#CENSOR for some explanation behind this. If you are worried about you 11yo seeing sear words you should not let them read wikipedia. A large part of the impact of the quote is because Russ is normally very formal and nice. - SimonLyall 08:39, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Links

Hi, the links you provided me on my Wikinews talk page are invalid. Nzgabriel 09:23, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Oops, they looked like they would work. Fixed. - SimonLyall 09:28, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, they are working now. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it, sorry but good luck with your meeting. Nzgabriel 09:40, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

meetup

I might not make the meetup, I would have just got back from Wellington after been on a 5 day Spirit of Adventure voyage, depends if I can be bothered in driving up to Auckland :) Brian | (Talk) 09:55, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

wow, we don't have an article on the Spirit of Adventure, I'm surprised, will start on in the morning... Brian | (Talk) 09:56, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
No problem, I wasn't sure where you lived so I guessed a little, trying to only notify people in the upper North Island. The Spirit of Adventure/NZ articles sounds a good idea. - SimonLyall 10:12, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Meetup2

Hello Simon - see you started notifying people (I had been putting it off for now). Any left to contact? Any part I could do? Cheers, MadMaxDog 05:40, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

I've left messages for all the ones I could see that appeared to be in Auckland or say Hamilton and had made edits in the last few weeks. IF you can find any others then please go ahead and inform them or if you can think or another place to post the note then please go ahead. - SimonLyall 08:41, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Replying to your question on my talk page - as the most active contributors to Wikipedia Maori (notably User:Kahuroa) are also active here, I wouldn't try to make separate contact. Robin Patterson 19:35, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Kia ora Simon, thanks for your messages about the Meetup, much appreciated. Doesn't look like I'll be able to make it this time - was thinking it might be possible, hence the delay in replying. Cheers Kahuroa 23:11, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough, if you know someone else in mi who can make it I'm sure others at the meeting will be interested in an update - SimonLyall 18:53, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for adding to this, but cheers for the invite. I will try my best to get time off work to be there, otherwise I'll just have to make it the next time! Cheers, Hauser 11:27, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
okay - SimonLyall 18:53, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Lake Alice

G'day Why you are rather quick there with the little copyrights maybe I could use my own pictures then...

If your phoning Wrightson's ask for Grant if you feel it's such a issue : ) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ashhurst (talkcontribs) 12:06, 1 April 2007 (UTC).

It is important because if another organisation owns the rights to the pictures then they could sue wikipedia for using them. Take for example the Big copyright logo in the google image you just uploaded. - SimonLyall 12:26, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

List of New Zealand-related topics‎

Hi, SimonLyall. I've condensed the Maori sections on the List of New Zealand-related topics - thought you might want to check over my revision. The "Maori culture" subsection now seems fine to me; I've deleted the "Maori mythology" section entirely, as the information can be accessed through the Maori mythology link in the culture subsection; the "Waka (canoes)" subsection now contains the seven "great fleet" canoes plus two more well-known ones. But I'm not sure what to do about the "Iwi (tribes)" subsection: I've deleted the subtribes (hapu) and those iwi that are part of larger confederations, but that still leaves 21 articles, with more on the way. I'm not sure what else to delete, although I still think the subsection itself deserves mentioning. What do you think? --Liveste 05:23, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

21 in one section isn't too bad I guess and doesn't seem to crowd it too much. I think it looks good now, thankyou for doing the update - SimonLyall 12:09, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Are you serious?

Coming to my country and trying to tell me what my race is? I admire Persia immensely, however, you sound more like you belong in Israel. --Hayden5650 09:17, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I think you may have made a misunderstanding. I am white, one hundred percent pure British ancestry. Im not Iranian. --Hayden5650 09:22, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

It's been a long day here too. I think there have been misunderstandings on both our parts, never mind though. Will upload new, non copyrighted pic when I get my hands on one. In the mean time though, the existing photo looks set to be deleted.

kilometric reversion flap, apology accepted

Apparently what I did was only fix half of the previous edit, which may or may not have been intentional spam. Thank you for finishing the job. My correction was a bit in the nature of a drive-by; I just came to check the conversion factor for miles => kilometres, and noticed the silly spelling in the first line of the article, and corrected it without even looking to see if there were other cases. --Haruo 17:26, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Hitler Photo

No of course not, however I just ticked that option as none other seemed to suit. Photos of Hitler and Nazi Germany etc etc are unique in that their copyrights, though only 60 years old, are not valid as the USA during the occupation of Germany released them into the public domain. Let's just hope the NSDAP doesn't sue for copyvio. --Hayden5650 12:23, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Recent revert in New Zealand

Hi Simon. Please refer to the talk page [1] Mombas 00:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

a response to your request

I recognize your name as that of the requester for a translation of the German Wikipedia article on de:Jean Loret. I'm 95% done with the English translation. I just want to run a few difficult words and phrases by the German contributors to make sure I've got it as right as I can before posting it. However, I'm new to this and don't know what the hell I'm doing. Navigating this site has been a nightmare and I can no longer find the page where your request for the translation is posted. Could you supply me with that address or link here? Thanks.--Rex Bachmann 19:43, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

port cities

I too know cities are not towns, but I don't think reversion is an answer. Please see the discussion and my comments at Category talk:Port cities Thanks. Hmains 02:47, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Ki-o-rahi

Re Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ki-o-rahi. Please have another look there - Moriori has made a suggestion in the light of the Herald article which makes sense to me. However I think that the AfD for the related article The Legend of Rahi should go ahead Kahuroa 10:30, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Tapanui crater

Came across this newly-created article, and I found a source that debunks the suggestions made in the original version of the article. If you follow the history, you'll see what I have done with it. Was wondering if you could take a quick look - I haven't changed the categories the creator assigned to it which are probably a bit too definite for it now, am wondering how it should be categorised tho, and what you think of premise of the article generally. Cheers Kahuroa 05:31, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

NZ timeline

Who decides what events in the New Zealand timeline are worthy of mention? In terms of the cinema of New Zealand the date you removed reflects a milestone in New Zealand's past. You have provided a rationale for the removal of the govt mention but not for the date that the NZ film commission was established other than too minor for this article which is not really a rationale. I simply disagree with the removal of the date and mention especially when entries like the first film screening and C4 airing are included. This timeline seems to favor events relevant to political history or the encounters between Maori and pakeha. Where are the events that pertain to cultural developments such as the airing of Maori television in 2004? Dates such as these are relevant and aren't minor but rather situated in a different area of concern. You might not think it's important but there are those who do. --Savre 12:35, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

That whole page really needs cutting down to perhaps 2 or 3 events per year. Using that criteria I don't think that the film comission rates in the top 2 or 3 events of that year (there are dozns of other bodies of similar imporance and listed each by whn they were established would clutter the page). As you point out some of the events already listed there don't rate that high and they should be removed too. The 1978 in New Zealand article is the place to put it. - SimonLyall 22:29, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Apology redirected to you

Hi there: I think you may have been following the fractious discussion at Luca de Alfaro, which you nominated for deletion. I pointed out in the discussion that the article's creator had been rude in referring to your actions -- he seems to have assumed that it was me to whom he had been rude, which is rather amusing since he accused you/me of being a "lazybones" for not digging deeper. Anyway, he left me the message below on my talk page, which I'm sure is actually directed to you rather than me. I hope you find it of interest. If I can be of any further service, or if you have any comments, I'm at your service. Accounting4Taste 17:26, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Wait a second...

I suggested that you idiot, but that is not the same thing as accusing you of bad faith. Here, read this: Jimbo sparks deletion debate. Jimmy does accuse people of bad faith, but that's not what I did to you. Jimmy is paranoid about that kind of stuff (it must come from his childhood and from managing the Objectivism Usenet list he managed in the 1990's). I now admit that I was wrong to suggest that you might be an idiot and I apologize to you. Being an atheist, I do not normally quote the Bible, but Ecclesiastes 3:3 reminds that there is a a time to tear down and a time to build up. But common sense tells us that tearing down is easier. That's why I called you what I did, but I now recognize that my words were unfair. Again, sorry.--Mightyms 04:32, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Christopher Wingate

Hello Simon Lyall

What appears to be the problem with the entries I have made ?

Cheers Christopher Wingate —Preceding unsigned comment added by WingateChristopher (talkcontribs) 22:52, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Greetings. I appear to under some attack and seek your assistance in order to build an editing contribution. The information I have entered is correct. Perhaps my problem is adding to sites in a way I should'nt have. My apologies. However all statements are correct and should be given life on Wikipedia. Cheers Christopher Wingate —Preceding unsigned comment added by WingateChristopher (talkcontribs) 23:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Simon

I note you have deleted what I added to Peter Tapsell. If the issue is about reliability then I will email you an article of my trip with Peter. I will also attach his home ph number. I don't write anything that is not correct. If you can suggest how I add reference to the article then I would be glad to get your advice oin how I can do this. Cheers, --WingateChristopher 15:29, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

plural apostrophe

Little Oxford Dic of Eng Grammar 1995:

"Add 's to a singular word (e.g. ...Doris's..)

Add 's to plural words

With plural words ending in s, only add apostrophy..."

I had to look it up too <smile>. It appears Ellis's is correct, I'll let you restore the trawling grammatician's edit. RichardJ Christie (talk) 02:02, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
