• Simon, were you a long time contributor to nz.general? Cheers Moriori 08:26, Jul 17, 2004 (UTC)
 • yes, thats me SimonLyall 08:56, Jul 17, 2004 (UTC)
 • Welcome. This is a really interesting place. Very frustrating, very infectious, very time consuming, very rewarding, Never ceases to amaze me the number of people here who are highly knowledgeable in their various fields. You'll recognise them fairly quickly. Enjoy. (I once had a tete a tete with Tim in the early Ihug days. Rang me to say he had sent me a refund cheque, and I could stick it you know where. Couple of days later I rang him back and asked him which of the TWO cheques he sent me I should bank!) Moriori

Welcome to Wikipedia, Simon. I see on your TODO list that you want to write about criminals, etc. Are you particularly interested in Criminology?--Ejrh 12:08, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

 • Not specificly , the list there is just a few things in my head that I have ideas about. I'd really like to get a lot of the NZ stuff expanded. The history bits especially. I'm flat out with other stuff for the next few weeks so I'll not going to have a chance to do anything big but I want to get a NZ history and encyclopedia and start adding bits. I'm also looking at some technical stuff but thats mainly a learning area since I have to get my mysql and other skills up to scratch. SimonLyall 12:00, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)
 • Yeah, it can be a bit of work to get Wikipedia up and running locally. I have a local mirror of it (which is only updated about twice a year; it takes a long time to get the DB over dialup!), but I also wanted to write some bots for it to clean things up generally. Let me know if you need help configuring it, since I did that recently when upgrading to MediaWiki and you might run into the same problems I did.--Ejrh 03:46, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Welcome from another Kiwi who spent 25 years in Dunedin

Gidday, sport! Saw a couple of good edits of yours and decided to investigate.

I guess you've now bypassed your website comment "I've been considering running an open content new Zealand encyclopedia here". You could link that paragraph to our New Zealand page.

You do not play computer games?? Well - maybe you'll come to that! Best wishes, anyway!. Robin Patterson 00:33, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The "open content NZ encyclopedia" thing was from way back (3 years or so) when nupedia was just out . I had the idea of a NZ specific one but didn't really have the time to do it so I just left it on my todo lists. I should really update my website a little more often.
Followed some of your edits, perhaps there should be a Wikiproject:New Zealand at some point. There is a lot of room out there, it's a pity that the stuff on nzhistory.net.nz and the other sites is under a slightly too restrictive copyright. However I'm thinking perhaps something like a Wikipedia:Requested articles page just for NZ SimonLyall 16:16, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I've just been looking around trying to find a WikiProject on NZ to discover there isn't one... You have my support on starting one if you do, there are a lot of articles that can be expanded. Time to head to the library methinks :) porge 23:45, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Yes there is a tonne to get done. The history pages (which I've been looking at a little need a lot of filling out and there are huge gaps in culture, people and places. I have a few of the popular history of NZ books and I'm using them a little to trasnfer over stuff. I'll probably start up the project in a day or so SimonLyall 20:38, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Local body election results

An article on the local body election results would probably be a good idea, yes. I'm not sure exactly what it should be called, however. If it follows the pattern of the current New Zealand general election articles, it would be something like New Zealand local body elections 2004, but it seems that this is not a standard throughout Wikipedia. There's probably been discussion of the proper format somewhere, but I don't know where. It can always be moved later, of course, so it's probably not vital. -- Vardion 13:35, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Auto-reverting

Stop undoing all my edits. Television was not mine, I just left myself logged in by accident. It could have been anyone. --ihatepotsmokinghippies 09:59, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

 • I'm not undoing all your edits, just some of them that reduce the quality of the article. You seem to be moving very fast though articles and making lots of changes. Please slow down and consider things a little before you make changes. I'm dont' really think there is a way anyone else can make edits appears to be from you unless they are using your computer.
 • You are doing some good edits, but try and keep your quality consistent. Edits like the one to Television and User talk:KevinBot mean the rest of the stuff you do gets checked (and not just by me). SimonLyall 10:11, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Copyright violations

SimonLyall. Do not post on my Talk page, thank you. In regards to the pictures of Toll's operations in NZ, they in my opinion are considered fair use. If you want to remove them go ahead.--GardenState 07:07, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Not sure how I am supposed to reach you except via your talk page but if that is your wish, perhaps you could leave a note there for others... Please have a look at the guidelines for images, even if you consider them fair use you shouldn't have marked them as public domain when you uploaded them. I am out of town until ANZAC day so I won't be doing anything till then. I suspect that most of your images will have to be deleted except possible the logos. Please ask some of the Wikipedia people who are more expert than me though. If you get an opinion then please leave a note here pointing to it. SimonLyall 08:07, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Is he serious about staying off his talk page? I think I will go post a hi! over there for him. :) Btw, Hi SimonLyall, I ended up here because you revert some vandl at Cisco Systems from an anom that I had to revert and was checking out. Terry T | @ | C
Hi Terry, he seemed serious and I'm trying not to be confrontational around here. He was also editing as User:Matt von Furrie for a while but hasn't used either alias for a bit. - SimonLyall 10:05, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
lol. On another subject, if you notice anymore unwanted edits by User talk:69.232.185.65 please post them on his Talk page. He seems to keep coming back and next time I would like to document his actions and then report him for a ban. Terry T | @ | C 11:27, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Revert

Revert. I'll post a revision later--Matt von Furrie 07:47, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Map images

Hi Simon - it could be that bug. The other possibility is that about 90% of the maps I've done with Mozilla, but I was lazy earlier and opened up IE instead (I was working from a differnt computer that didn't have Mozilla installed). Twizel was one of the maps I did with IE. Could that have caused it somehow, perhaps? Grutness...wha? 30 June 2005 12:22 (UTC)

Who decides?

Hi Simon - I noted in List of New Zealand-related topics you have created a list of towns and cities, Whangarei down to Invercargill. Do you think smaller towns should/shouldn't be added? Cheers. Moriori 03:29, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

I copied the list off the main New Zealand page which has already had plenty of discussion on which ones to include. - SimonLyall 03:50, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
OK. I changed the subhead to Main centres. Get's over it nicely. Moriori 03:58, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

New Zealand links

Hi Simon,

I respectfully dispute that links to the Edge website on the List of New Zealanders and Culture of New Zealand pages constitute advertising.

The site is first and foremost an informational resource: the hero stories themselves are impartial biographies and are already linked to in wikipedia via several individual stories. As a site insider, I can assure you that we get an abundant amount of e-mails from kids in schools who find the stories useful for school projects, and from researchers who are covering particular individuals.

I concede that the relevance of the link on Culture of New Zealand might be debated, but I don't think that removing the link from the List of New Zealanders to the stories of famous New Zealand heroes is entirely fair.

As a big fan and frequent user of Wikipedia my intention was to merely introduce the edge site as a resource where it could add value to existing information, and in the case of famous New Zealanders the edge site has a great deal of helpful content. It is obvious that some of the biographies of famous New Zealanders written on Wikipedia used the edge site as reference material.

Cheers, Matt. PortableUnit

I agree with Matt, insider or whatever. I've been a great fan of NZ Edge since I discovered it. It's free to look at and is not screamingly commercial in appearance. So a link to it can't be bad. Robin Patterson 04:14, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

Okay, we'll see how it goes. It seems to be a positive contribution for now. SimonLyall 10:20, 12 August 2005 (UTC)

Dana Delany

"featuring this beautiful woman" not exactly encyclopedic. Maybe not, but it took a month before someone decided she's not beautiful by all objective standards. :) Wahkeenah 13:45, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedians in New Zealand

Hi, You might want to consider adding User NZ res to the top of your user page, which will add you to this category automatically and also add a nice graphic. Onco_p53 07:43, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi Simon, yes my intentions were to edit the relevant sections to make them better. I began editing immediately after I restored the paragraphs, but was distracted away from my computer for a while! I've just saved the additional changes. They could probably do with some more fixing up but preferably not to be completely removed. -- Chuq 08:07, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
