Does Tabernaemontana heyneana and Tabernaemontana alternifolia are synonyms? http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Nag%20Kuda.html says so. Further, Wikipedia has only Tabernaemontana heyneana page and Commons has only Tabernaemontana alternifolia category. Sorry J, the situation with plant synonymy is awfully more complicated and there may be situations where some descriptions are considered a synonym while others not - the way authorship and circumscriptions are dealt with is slightly different in plants and I think the best would be to ask a real botanist. My guess is that it is a bit more complex and possibly not easily resolvable. See IPNI which says Tabernaemontana alternifolia. (L.) is a basionym of Ervatamia alternifolia ( L. ) S.M.Almeida but not for Tabernaemontana alternifolia Roxb. The bottom line is that there can be multiple conflicting views...! Category - Birds of Nepal

Hi Shyamal, I am checking IUCN list before adding this category to the article of birds. I use to add this category only to the native species of birds. I am not an expert of bird but also I am doing this so please suggest me whenever I do mistakes. I was thinking like: It would be better to use category: Birds of Asia would be better if a bird found in most of Asian country but somebody in commons suggested me to use lowermost category.... to maintain hierarchy. :p -Krish Dulal (talk) 15:57, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Krish - that bit about the lowest hierarchy category is indeed correct but even on Commons you will notice that the geographic category is different from what we have in the language Wikis. The most appropriate thing with organisms (which do not care about political boundaries) is to use broad geographic boundaries like continent and biogeographic regions rather than political boundaries (such as state, district and so on). At one time there were as many as 150 country categories for species like Arctic Tern leading to routine deletion drives of categories like this and this for example. List of birds of Nepal can actually do with referencing and improvement. The categories on the other hand are mostly not useful. Also note that there is also category related fauna vandalism - mainly to promote breakaway regions and other political ideas. Shyamal (talk) 16:44, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

This could be very useful, a single dedicated user can do a lot for the project. Do you know any AntWiki editors? I've visited the site many times, but never edited. You need to be an ant biologists or "more than just an enthusiastic interest in ants" according to their about page. If you send an invite to any of the AW contributors it would be useful to link some of our best content, unfortunately I've been only able to find a single FA (Ant) and no GAs, but that is an area that will improve with time. jonkerz ♠talk 10:43, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

I believe User:Gary Alpert is one of the key people on AntWiki but seeing their experience on Wikipedia I have second thoughts on whether they would warm up to the idea of working here. There are several generalist entomologists (User:Dyanega, User:Notafly) who tend to stick on and contribute over a long duration. Specialists, particularly systematics folks, find it hard to understand the rules of Wikipedia and often end up leaving due to poor initial experiences (see the reverts of Gary Alpert on the ant article history for instance - although it was mostly the addition of links to their own project) or prefer to work in a controlled environment with known colleagues. In some cases they also give up due to disputes (see for example User:Sirolo at Talk:Nothomyrmecia_macrops). Then there are specialist myrmecologists like User:Ameisendok who work on specific aspects like ant navigation but do not have the energy to create/edit on Wikipedia (and we have complaints from folks like User:Collettm). I guess the education project, especially students of User:Agelaia can do the best job here, particularly since they are in a better position to review literature with an open mind and also since a lot of literature has been made easily available through projects like antbase.org / antweb.org (and images too antbase images). The editing environment on Wikipedia is very different from the one in academia, mostly in a good way imo. Some of WP's expert retention problem is actually more an experts'-retention-of-Wikipedia problem.. but I guess we need to improve a lot in this area too. Anyway, I agree that assisting education projects may be the best way to expand the wiki; a lot of good articles have been created/expanded by students in the last month alone (e.g. Myrmecocystus mexicanus, Pharaoh ant, Leptothorax acervorum, Army ant), and just giving students a welcome with links to relevant wikiprojects and encourage them to post link to their new articles would help a lot. Hi again! I found a good open access article with a lot of valuable information on the Sri Lankan relict ant's distribution not known to science at the time you wrote the article back in 2009. The article, published in Journal of Threatened Taxa, contains at least a few paragraphs that can be reused on WP and a distribution map that can be extracted. Link: Karunarathna, D. A. G. N. In any case the article could do with "good references" - citing a few websites or newspaper articles is rather insufficient. I am sure there is good biographical material in some academic resources/ obits (eg Padmanabhan D. 1980 Obituary Prof. B.G.L. Swamy (1918-1980). J. Indian bot. Soc 59. 382-3.) . Tbx status for Bhutan giant flying squirrel

First work on insects of India

Dear Shyamal So far as I know this is the first work on the insects of India Epitome of the Insects of India.There are some odd inclusions - butterflies from South America and at least one from Africa.I put a note on the "frontis" explaining one instance (Consul fabius - India in the Joseph Banks collection according to Fabricius).I will see what I can do plate by plate.I think it's worth the time spent.Warm regards Robert aka Notafly (talk) 20:06, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

I have noticed that some of the Psychology articles have not been reviewed in several years. "Major Depressive" has not been reviewed since 2008, for example. Any possible interest? cephalic process

In the Kalidasa (genus) article, the special usage of the noun "process" needs to be defined, either with a pinpoint link (anchor link) to the article on insect anatomy, to wikitionary, or by using a explanatory footnote. As it stands, the text does not convey the proper meaning, except to a specialist. See MOS:JARGON. You might consider this electronic source, Gordh, Gordon, ed. (2001). "Process". A Dictionary of Entomology. Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England: CAB International. p. 734. ISBN 978-0-85199-291-4.. Right now the insect anatomy article uses the noun "process" half-a-dozen times in this sense of a "projection" without defining it anywhere, it also uses "process" in the more common meaning about an equal number of times. Can you write story for the newsletter?

Hello Shyamal, Thank you for your suggestion for the newsletter This Month in GLAM, concerning Wikipedia:GLAM/NM. The newsletter is written by volunteers like you and has no team who use the ideas and write a story about it. If it is possible, I would like to ask you to write a short summary of the project so that users, chapters and GLAMs around can learn from it. You can write directly on the page of the country, we will take care of the look and such. The easiest way is to start in the newsroom. Thanks! Insect ref. list

Hi Shyamal:

Do we have a trusted ref. list like platlist for insects? I tried http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi for Abisara bifasciata but didn't get a result initially. Abisara echerius is listed there; but searching further, it lead me to http://data.gbif.org/species/1935357/ where it is listed as a syn. of Abisara echeria Stoll, 1790. There I see Abisara bifasciata Moore, 1877 too; but not a ssp. like Abisara bifasciata suffusa as listed http://www.ifoundbutterflies.org/187-abisara/abisara-bifasciata

So I'm confused. Does my https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=629321473771990 is Abisara bifasciata or Abisara echerius? Do we need to rename Abisara echerius to Abisara echeria? Jee 07:28, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi Jeevan, the answer to the first question is that there is no single reliable all-species source (although we can consider Krushnamegh's website as a good source to follow for the Indian species alone) and it depends on the species concept being adopted (phylogenetic vs BSC). As far as I can tell A. bifasciata is distinct from A. echerius but it seems like there have been queries on what the northeastern mainland species should be assigned to - and suffusa seems to have been moved around historically. Your FB link did not work but if the picture was taken in southern India, it has to be echerius. Shyamal (talk) 14:28, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Glyphipterigidae spider mimic

Amazing.Over the years I found many mimics (or models) hiding in collections under assumed names and sometimes overlooked for a hundred years or so. It is a fascinating subject,especially the very complex butterfly mimicry rings found in South America, each subspecies mimicing a different (sometimes very different in appearance) species. I cannot imagine how this was worked out and of course much of it isn't. One problem is that often the mimics outnumber the dangerous models which in the ring or pair should put the models in danger.
