Decades

Hi, re this edit - please note that per WP:DECADE, the correct forms would explicitly state the century, i.e. 1990s and 1984, not '90s and '84. Also, yesterday you applied the wrong spelling fix: "worshipped" is correct for British English, which per MOS:TIES is the preferred form for all Doctor Who articles. Hello, Redrose64, and thank you for letting me know of my mistakes. Re: the decade fixes, I try and keep consistency within a document/article, and did not realize that the four-digit year is Wikipedia standard until you pointed it out. I've also started checking any unfamiliar spellings, particularly doubled consonants or lack of same, by setting my Word language to UK English, something I hadn't thought of until I'd edited an article or two. From now on, I won't look to see if a Doctor Who article has a notation that British English is to be used; I'll just know to use it.

Thank you for your message, and if you notice anything else I should be doing or not doing, I would genuinely appreciate the head's up. I'm kind of new to editing Wikipedia; I'm just one of those anal people who can't read something without proofing it at the same time, and then having the strong need to fix anything I find.--Sherlockspock (talk) 18:27, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

There are possibly a small number of exceptions, but other than American actors like Mekhi Phifer I've not come across any - they would necessarily concern someone or something with strong American ties. Of the obvious candidates for use of American English, there was some debate about Torchwood: Miracle Day and directly-related pages, but these seem to have fallen on the British side; and although John Barrowman is an American citizen, his article uses British English because of his Scottish birth.

Thanks for the offer; I might just take you up on asking questions. And it didn't occur to me that a specific choice had been made to use UK English spellings for a British TV series. As I'm familiar with most UK spelling differences I never saw them as typos; it only became an issue for words with which I wasn't familiar, and the first several of those I encountered had the Category notation on British English.

Had I been involved in the Torchwood: Miracle Day debate, I'd have come down on the side of American English usage, what with it being produced by Starz and being set largely in the US. OTOH, I guess I can see an argument for keeping it UK English, given the rest of the series is set in the UK.

Oh, I'm sorry, my page notice was not clear! I meant that I would perfer a {{Talkback}} template so I would know when you replied. I've changed it; it's not your fault. Don't worry, I've only gotten into episodes prior to 2010 recently and joined the project before then, and I've seen none of the classic series. Anyway, proofreading is a great way to start and is of help. Also, don't feel that once you join you must contribute excessively. Oh, geez; I *am* sorry! The fact that I'm new at this whole talk page thingie, and templates and such, really shows, doesn't it? Now I know, so thank you so much. The Wikipedia policy of being patient and polite is certainly helpful for someone like me, who wants to learn but gets turned off by ad hominem attacks before instructions.

And I have been searching for a Doctor Who-specific style manual since Saturday, when I noticed there appeared to be no consistency of style across articles and I wanted to fix that; now I know how to find it so I can start cleaning some of these things up.
