Speedy deletion nomination of Lojack for laptops edit

Hello Shannonmwiki,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Lojack for laptops for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. TKK bark ! 21:44, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Appeal edit

Hello there, I would like an opportunity to re-write the content-in-question on my lojack for laptops page. You identified the entire article as being a copyright violation, when it was in fact only a small section I was in the process of revising. In the interest of full disclosure, I have stated in my profile that I am an employee of Absolute Software; the content in question existed partially in one of our .PDFs out in the world wide web (unbeknown to me). It was the only part of the provided content which I myself had flagged as 'potentially no good' and I was in the process of revising and sculpting that content to meet Wikipedia's guidelines even as my page was shut down.

As the page itself was only crafted and launched this afternoon I had expected a little more time to sculpt the content appropriately; It was flagged and deleted completely within less than a half an hour before I was able to make my appeal via the official option.

Please share your thoughts, and let me know if we can get this page back for an opportunity to re-write or remove entirely the offending content.

Thank you, Sincerely, Shannonmwiki (talk) 23:26, 29 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for being respectful and polite, a lot of newcomers can be kind of testy!
What you want, if you are looking for time to 'sculpt the article', is to use your sandbox. You can get at yours here, but it seems like you may have already found it. There you can create articles without fear of them being deleted! You can ask an administrator to restore the part of that page that wasn't infringing, if it was only part, into that space. I can't do that for you (I'm not an administrator), but the admin who deleted it, User:Vianello, may be able to.
It also looks like the article would be better as part of the main Lojack article. Had you considered that?
Another thing; as you state, you work for Absolute Software, so you want to be careful when editing, as you have a conflict of interest. Some editors won't look kindly upon this - I personally don't care, as long as you edit neutrally, which you appear to be doing. --TKK bark ! 00:35, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello! I just noticed this conversation. Articles don't have to go directly out into the wild, so to speak, and are generally expected to at least meet inclusion criteria when they do, so if you want to take more time to peck away at it, your personal sandbox (or just a document on your own computer) is the place to do it. Also in future, if an article is deleted and you want a copy of it, as long as it doesn't flagrantly violate any policies like WP:BLP or vandalism policies, an admin can "userfy" it, putting a copy as a subpage of your user page. Let me know if you have any questions. - Vianello (Talk) 04:17, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you both for your quick and informative responses; I admit I am new and doing my best to understand and comply with the rules of Wikipedia authoring.

Tikuko, Thank you, I actually already have a very small 'blurb' on the lojack page; With respect to the formatting (and amount of content associated with other lojack products listed on their page) the content we've chosen to provide there is limited. As partners, we are currently in direct communication with Lojack and the wiki author 'jasonlojack' regarding revisions to our section on their page. Ultimately, we would like it to consist of a small blurb, and the 'Main Page' link back to our wiki/lojack_for_latops page. Does this seem fair and reasonable?

I believe that the Lojack for Laptops product and service is on its own a valuable contribution to Wikipedia, as the information and details of this product and service may help educate users on existing electronic device theft recovery options.

Vianello, Thank you, I have a copy of the page in my sandbox and will be making significant changes throughout the course of today. I would like to, once complete, move the page back to the same location I attempted before at (wiki/lojack_for_laptops). Are there any obstacles to my doing so now that my last attempt was squashed? Once pushing the new page to the desired location, will it simply go through another review process and if it passes, stay live? [ EDIT: I also wanted to confirm that the 'infringement' which caused the speedy deletion of my first attempt was in fact only the content in my 'Absolute Persistence' technology section? ]

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Shannonmwiki (talk) 16:47, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I will say that the article, as it exists in your sandbox, does look very ad-like. Your plan for linking the blurb and the page is more than reasonable, but you'll want to make your article look less like an advertisement; for example, we don't usually include things like the registered trademark symbol in articles.--TKK bark ! 17:11, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Request for Review edit

Hello Tikuko and Vianello, I was wondering if one of you might be willing to do a quick review of (the revised) page as it currently exists in my sandbox? I do not wish to offend any of Wikipedia's rules or guidelines with this second attempt, and am hoping to identify and rectify any issues prior to launching it as a complete page. Thank you so much for your consideration and support through my first Wikipedia contribution.

Re: Re-instituting Lojack article edit

If you want to submit your article a second time, you can just re-create the article the same way you created it in the first place. Just go to the article name you want for it. Since there's no article there, it will ask if you want to create the page. Then just say yes. I was wanting to look it over to see if I could offer you any advice first, but I'm having trouble finding where you sandboxed it. If you want me to take a peek, could you link me to it, please? (By the by: I appreciate you having a sense of humor about the speedy deletion issue!) - Vianello (Talk) 19:28, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Vianello, (lol!) Thank you for interpreting my sense of humor correctly!! I really appreciate your setting time aside to assist me with this article; As we already determined I am relatively new to Wikipedia and doing my best to make sure that what I offer exists within the rules and regulations already set in place.
Along those lines, I believe you can view my Sandbox article here ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Shannonmwiki/sandbox ).
I would greatly appreciate any feedback or guidance you provide which might help to make this article complete, fair, appropriate, and relevant enough for inclusion on Wikipedia.
Thank you!!

All right, belatedly, here are my few cents:

  • The entire "Where are Laptops Stolen?" is tangential to the subject (which is this specific piece of software). It also phrases the subjective opinion of an article as a fact. Bolding the word "the" is unnecessary as well, as it further emphasizes something that is the opinion of that given source rather than a fact. It would probably be best to just cut this section entirely.
  • The "Absolute Investigations Team" section does not provide any references/sources. This would probably just be a matter of pointing to the product's webpage if it provides such information.
  • There are some external reviews and references given, but the article itself doesn't do a very good job of pointing them out. It would be a good idea to mention specific accolades, like being rated #1 at Toptenreviews.com. The key thing is showing that this product meets WP:Notability criteria, so finding a way to indicate that in the article itself is really key. - Vianello (Talk) 01:10, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Vianello, I am making some final adjustments based on your feedback and will be launching a new page this afternoon. I sincerely appreciate your support and guidance.

A page you started (LoJack for Laptops) has been reviewed! edit

Thanks for creating LoJack for Laptops, Shannonmwiki!

Wikipedia editor Michaelzeng7 just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

I have redirected your article to LoJack, where it is already mentioned. Feel free to add things there. I do not believe this software is notable enough to have its own article.
