Copyright problem on Road ecology edit

Material you included in the above article appears to have been copied from the copyright web page http://www.moef.nic.in/assets/Linear%20intrusions%20background%20paper.pdf. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, the content had to be removed. I did notice that you appear to be the author of the material that was copied. Regardless of the copyright issue, you should not be citing your own research or adding it to this wiki. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 15:03, 9 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Diannaa for bringing this to my attention. I appreciate the point about not citing own research, but the document concerned is primarily a review of research studies carried out by others presented as a background paper and part of official Government of India proceedings. As far as I am aware, this places it in the public domain. I am basing this on (a) the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (Chapters 3 and 4), (b) the copyright policy of the environment ministry website which states (as on date):

"Material featured on this site may be reproduced free of charge in any format or media without requiring specific permission. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not being used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context. Where the material is being published or issued to others, the source must be prominently acknowledged. However, the permission to reproduce this material does not extend to any material on this site, which is explicitly identified as being the copyright of a third party. Authorisation to reproduce such material must be obtained from the copyright holders concerned."

and (c) the document is not explicitly under third party copyright (referred in b above). If you think I am mistaken, please do clarify so that I can rework the edits. If you agree, perhaps you can consider reverting at least the edits that refer to other literature and I can continue to improve the section with fresh content and citations. Thanks for your attention! Shankar Raman (talk) 02:12, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
In my opinion that license is not liberal enough for use on Wikipedia, because of the wording "This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not being used in a derogatory manner or in a misleading context", whereas our license permits the work to be edited, used, and redistributed by anyone for any purpose whatosever, provided the terms of one of the licenses that Wikipedia's text is licensed under are followed. These licenses are the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license (CC-BY-SA) and GNU Free Documentation License. Under current copyright law, literary works are subject to copyright whether they are tagged as such or not. No registration is required, and no copyright notice is required. So the statement that material is PD unless stated otherwise is incorrect. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 02:24, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I see your point, although I am not sure I agree that it creates a constraint in this specific case (also given that even if there were copyright, it would be with me and I am happy to release under a liberal license or with the Ministry for which the above policy applies). Nevertheless, I recognize that there could still be some unresolved issues, so, to take this ahead, it seems best to start the section from scratch and focus on reliable sources. Thank you for your inputs. Shankar Raman (talk) 05:52, 11 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ways to improve Primate Conservation (journal) edit

Hi, I'm Nick Moyes. Shankar Raman, thanks for creating Primate Conservation (journal)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Much as it grieves me, I cannot find third party sources to show that this journal meets our notability guidelines. Anything you can add which supports its significance would be immensely helpful to ensuring this article is retained. Sorry I've had to flag it in this way. It may end up having to become a WP:REDIRECT to IUCN_Species_Survival_Commission#Primate_Specialist_Group

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Nick Moyes (talk) 20:04, 13 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nick Moyes, I have added some additional information and references. This journal contains significant publications of many new primate species and is notable for that, too. I feel one should retain this page for a while and more significant information is likely to be added.--Shankar Raman (talk) 11:48, 14 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - at a quick glance that has certainly helped. I've removed the notability tag, though it wouldn't stop someone else re-adding it, or even submitting any article to a WP:AfD discussion. I certainly won't be! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 13:09, 17 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Ecology, economy and society–The INSEE Journal cover.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Ecology, economy and society–The INSEE Journal cover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:49, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, done. Reduced image resolution and used on one page now. Shankar Raman (talk) 04:43, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

The article Ecology, Economy and Society–The INSEE Journal has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable journal. Not indexed in any selective databases, no independent sources. Does not meet WP:NJournals or WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Randykitty (talk) 21:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Randykitty, I have added a reference and a link to the India's University Grants Commission list of reputed journals, which is like a go-to list for reliable academic journals for Indian academics. Does this meet the notability criteria based on a reliable source? As this journal is still relatively new, it possibly has not been indexed in other bibliographies. It is a journal published by a reputed institute with scholarly contributions from some leading economists and ecologists in India, open access and articles are CC-by-SA NC 4.0. Do take a look and remove the proposed deletion if you agree. Shankar Raman (talk) 04:59, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi again, I have no time to look into all of those, but the Journal of Lipid Research has an impact factor, so although it is not mentioned in the article, it must be indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (at a minimum). Also, see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. If you see articles that don't meet our ,notability standards (and you fail to find reliable sources that would show notability), then feel free to nominate them for deletion. Being the only journal in a specific field is not really a claim to notability if nobody has found it necessary to report on that feat... In the present case, there is at least one other journal in this area. --Randykitty (talk) 12:49, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
