Help:Contents

Hi Shabrantha. I appreciate your enthusiasm to help new users, but changing the placeholder text in the Search box on this page really doesn't help anyone - the placeholder text is there to describe what the search box does (in this case, perform a restricted search within the Help namespace). Whilst the New Search beta is a useful tool (I use it myself), pointing new users to non-standard beta tools is only going to be confusing to them (particularly if you put the suggestion inside a search box). Please don't make the change again. If you want to help new users, why not volunteer at the Teahouse or field queries at the Help desk instead? Cheers, Yunshui ^雲_水 11:06, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

I did this because the standard search does not work. The beta search does work. When I complained about the standard search being broken, the answer was «use the beta». I was lucky to get that advice. Deliberately withholding that advice from other new users is kafkaesque bureucracy which deliberately makes life difficult for new users. I'm not sure what you're entering as a search term, but I can confirm that the Search box on the Help:Contents page does indeed work as intended (I just tried it - having first turned off my New Search beta - with a couple of different terms, and it returned pages in the Help and Wikipedia namespaces exactly as it should). You're trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. There's no Kafkaesque bureauocracy involved - new users can get the search results they need without enabling the beta search. I got «An error has occurred while searching: The search backend returned an error:». Other people got the same error. I think I was a new user although rapidly immersed in wikibureucracy after I found photos against copyright and then when I tried to fix them I found help search was broken, and there are lots of different rules and tools and advice designed to prevent me fixing either.

Other new users would get the same error. I was told to use beta search because the default search won't be fixed. I don't want beta features, I just want a helpsearch that works. Helpsearch is for helping new users. We must show new users how to use the search that works, instead of deliberately removing help for them. Shabratha (talk) 12:39, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Fuck it, I quit. If you guys want to play wikibureucracy then you can keep on playing. I did too much work trying to fix the photos against copyright and the broken help, and all I got was obstacles and objections and edit-reverts. Sorry you feel that way - it wasn't my intention to cause you frustration. If you're after information on the deletion of images for copyright reasons, then Wikipedia:Guide to image deletion would probably be worth a read, if you haven't located it already. As regards the search, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but I question the necessity of doing it - have you tried using the search on Help:Content (with your preferences adjusted to remove the beta search) recently? Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!
