U.S. politicians

edit

Hello and welcome again to Wikipedia. You are doing great work. I see that you have been writing articles about American politicians, which is one of my main interests. When you write articles, particularly about U.S. poiticians, you should go to the pages for their names with their middle initials and their middle names and redirect those pages to your article. For example, I redirected Carl A. Hatch and Carl Atwood Hatch to Carl Hatch. This is necessary because often politicians will have pages linking to them under all three diferent names. If you have any questions about this, ask me on my talk page. Academic Challenger 21:52, 8 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Autoblocking issues

{{unblock|autobanned because of my IP}} - I hate to be a bear, but I've been autoblocked because someone has a similar IP to mine, and his username's been deemed insulting. Any way I can get out from behind this? Here's the message I've been getting:

Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing. You were blocked by DragonflySixtyseven for the following reason (see our blocking policy): Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Pikachusucks". I removed one autoblock. Having said that you could get hit again. Do try to edit and if it fails let me know by a message here and I'll do what I can. --Tony Sidaway 16:40, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot - right now, it hasn't been too terribly frequent, so I'm hoping that there's no further trouble. --AlbertHerring 17:56, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
You're sharing an IP range with someone who is still occasionally logging in using that account. When he does that certain activities he does, not limited to editing, trip a twenty-four hour autoblock on the IP he's using, and if you should happen to use that IP number in the next twenty-four hours, you'll hit the block message. --Tony Sidaway 18:19, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was afraid of that - again, thanks for taking care of the problem. --AlbertHerring 18:30, 17 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bishop Roger de Beaumont

edit

Regarding your attempted move of Bishop Roger de Beaumont to Roger de Beaumont (bishop), cutting and pasting the text - thereby eliminating the page's edit history - is not an option. I reverted you. If you still wish to move the page to Roger de Beaumont (bishop), you'll need to ask an admin to do it, because your actions have prevented this being possible for ordinary users. Regards, Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 01:53, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, thanks - sorry about that. I'm still getting my sea legs around these parts. Would it be appropriate to suggest the move, do you think? I'm most concerned about orthography. --AlbertHerring 01:56, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, moving it to Roger de Beaumont (bishop) is fine by me; it was either that, or Bishop Roger de Beaumont. I didn't want to do Roger de Beaumont, Bishop of St. Andrews, because no other Scottish bishops (few other bishops in fact) have this titling form. You just need to ask an admin to move it for you, because Roger de Beaumont (bishop) now has a page history which has to be "disappeared". Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 02:01, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Understood - now, to find an admin...
Thanks very much for your help. --AlbertHerring 07:03, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:SpyridonXyndas.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:SpyridonXyndas.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

What is a stub?

edit

You might want to exercise a little more discretion about applying stub templates to articles. While, there has never been a definition of stub that satisfied everyone, I think most editors would agree that an article about a simple thing (like a light house) with more than a paragraph or two is not really a stub. The "classic" understanding of a WP:stub is an article consisting only enough information to identify the subject and some aspect of its encyclopedic significance. For example, "George Washington was the first president of the United States." would clearly be a stub. Articles that include several significant details about a subject are generally not considered stubs, even though there may be much more that could be said about the subject. If you want to mark such articles for a project to work on developing and expanding, you should use a project-specific template on the article's talk page. olderwiser 21:02, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, I just happened to notice you adding the lighthouse stub template to previously unstubbed articles. [1] [2] [3]. It looked to me as though you were simply working through a category or list article and stubbing everything. To do lists and reminders for project-type work can be managed with talk page templates. For example, one that I've noticed recently, the {{River}} has a parameter for "map needed", which places the talk page into Category:River articles needing maps. olderwiser 21:23, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Governors Island

edit

I noticed that you had tried to clean up the Governors Island article a while back. The same biased "legacy" section continues to return... only now with links to an outside "foundation" pushing its agenda for the island. The legacy section is clearly being used to support a non-neutral POV by lending credibility to this "foundation"'s views. Any support in straightening this thing out would be appreciated. I'm not familiar enough with wikipedia procedure to engage in much more than pointless reversions. Johnichiban 17:50, 14 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've offered an alternative proposal for dealing with the "legacy" section on the article's discussion page. (though I haven't actually submitted an alternate section for the actual article, my bad.) Hopefully this show that we've at least TRIED to reach consensus. Failing that, I think an RFC submission would do some good. I don't think the questionable section would stand up to much scrutiny at this point. I just hope that DeKoning doesn't have anything to say about Michigan... --Johnichiban 19:58, 22 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Utopia, Limited

edit

I've tweaked all the images, and removed a few (too many?). See what you think? Vanished user talk 20:44, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Trouble with the poster image is that it's so wide, and so detailed - it's kind of awkward to fit in, but too nice and too historically important not to do SOMETHING with.

By the way, on Nancy McIntosh - given that after Utopia Sullivan outright refused to set anything with Nancy in it, we can probably say with certainty that it deepened the rift. There's Gilbert, with the lass who'd become his adopted daughter - and Sullivan railing against her... Vanished user talk 21:01, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not familiar with the Heritage books, but they sound useful - just be careful when quoting about copyright/fair use: Source matters to copyright. Still, you should be able to use any information you find freely and to great effect! Vanished user talk 21:04, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Aye, Trouble with that poster is the dimensions - it's several times wider than tall. If it was the other way around, it'd be easy. Vanished user talk 21:06, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

As a thought, what if we moved it to the BOTTOM of the article? Better fit? Or not enough colour up near the top? Vanished user talk 21:07, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

As to Nancy, I WOULD like to bring her in to the W. S. Gilbert article more fully - she becomes so important to his history from Utopia on - one of the reasons Sullivan rejected His Excellency, the Fallen Fairies disaster that largely scuppered plans to revive Gilbert's non-Sullivan works, and so on... It's the article's major omission at present. Sadly, University doesn't gve me the time I'd like to work on it.

Hmm. Albert Herring - Benjamin Britten fan, are you? Vanished user talk 21:12, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Britten's one of the composers where I've adored everything I've heard of him, but, given my student budget, haven't had much chance to hear all that much. Think I'll grab some of his stuff when my student loan comes in. What d'ye think? Billy Budd, Peter Grimes, or Albert Herring? By the by, had an idea about the poster - what d'ye think of it there? Vanished user talk 21:23, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for putting up this great page. Can you add page references after the block quotes, like (Allen, p. 24)? I think that's all you need. Also, don't you need to add the name Reginald Allen to the reference? Or is it a different reference. For Reginald Allen, you can use:

  • Allen, Reginald (1975). The First Night Gilbert and Sullivan. London: Chappell & Co. Ltd.

(Although since you have the earlier version, it appears, you would change the year ref.) -- Ssilvers 01:49, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have a copy in a book, but it was black and white. --Anivron 07:04, 1 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Albanian composer substubs

edit

I noticed that you've made a number of one sentence pages recently, of the form "X was an Albanian composer". Sadly, this is too minimal even for Wikipedia. Unless you demostrate notability (i.e. multiple, non-trivial, independent sources), the articles will have to be deleted. If you'd like to work on them, you can create user subpages to store them until they are ready to be moved to the article namespace. Just a pointer. Thanks for all your other good work! I'll be looking for it. In the meantime: There's a cool follow-up story in one of the major car mags about a Zagato-bodied 1954 Maserati that spent time here in California, was shipped back to Italy...and walled up in a garage for more than 40 years. Very unique car that's been shipped back here and restored. It kicked butt at the Pebble Beach Concours. Need to pick that 'zine up. - Lucky 6.9 01:49, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

With all the paint stripped off of it, yet. Still had its yellow-on-black California plates. My poor little '65 Mustang spent about eight years in my garage. Last weekend, I rolled up my sleeves, overhauled the carb, put in a new battery and zowie! It lives! It needs some more work, but I actually drove it up and down my street last week. Nice feeling. More fun this weekend. - Lucky 6.9 02:03, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pleased to say that the Maser has an aluminum body, so no rust. Just, well, bare aluminum. I still can't figure out for the life of me why someone would strip off the paint. The restored car is done up in a sort of Ferrari red and it's so gorgeous you can't believe it. As for the Mustang, the front cover corroded through in one place and it's pumping coolant right through the hole. Got a bid on eBay just now for a real nice used one with the correct part number. Started it up tonight after work and man, is that poor little car leaking exhaust. It looks like it's ready for a cross-country trip now that it's clean, but is it ever a long way off from that. Time and money will tell.  :) - Lucky 6.9 06:20, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ernst and boning

Ha! Thanks for your great praise and cheers for the bone!! My Ernst Stavro Blofeld character / Doctor Evil tends to use the word fricking a lot - I hpappened to be starting a village named Frickovce!! As you can see I have a sense of humour lovely to see you have too!! There are too many serious mofos on wikipedia. Well yes the thinf is you look at the main page. You see 1,438,000 articles and you think wow how full is that but this is a tiny fraction of would shuld and could exist. I am going through Slovakia cos I when I started only about 5 cities in the country were covered yet there are several thousand in that country alone. Then there is Hungary and Romania and so on!!! But I don't just create new solid stubs. See Tashilhunpo Monastery William Garwood, Charlotte Burton Leon Moreaux these are some of my better starter articles. All the best and cheers! Ernst Stavro Blofeld 18:21, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also congratulations on your did you knows you have had more than me I think!! Ernst Stavro Blofeld 18:22, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll give the bone to my kitty Mr Bigglesworth my Angora cat to chew on on my user page!!!Ernst Stavro Blofeld 18:29, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey I see you have alos been doing a great job. Well done. Yeah I am like you I like the Opera and stylish things. I have a big fan of those cool old films and westerns which are in total about 0.005% covered on wikipedia. Shame I don't speak Itlaian but I do speak Spanish. Hasta luego amigo. Me encantado de concerla. Adios. Ernst Stavro Blofeld 18:41, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your redirect to Ospedale della Pieta

edit

Were you planning to merge the information from the Pio Ospedale article, or just lose it? JackyR | Talk 20:15, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, one was twice as long and included refs and quotes. The other had neither. I'm not complaining about your choice of article title, but for I'd go with the contents of Pio Ospedale (rephrased, perhaps) - especially since you pasted the ref sources from Pio Ospedale into Ospedale. These refs actually mildly contradict the Ospedale article, saying the Ospedale has been "wrongly described" as a musical academy, so it would be something of a sin to leave to things are they are... :-) JackyR | Talk 20:54, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Getting there. But
  • the Ospedale took boys as well as girls (up to puberty), and
  • if you want to claim the Ospedale was a music academy when the ref says it wasn't, you need to state and ref both (unless one ref is so authoritative it obviously falisfies the other), and
  • you've lost the amazing link to baby hatch, which surely has to go in as being mind-blowing that it has a whole history.

Basically, read §1! JackyR | Talk 21:17, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oops, where did I put that petard...? :-)
Yeah, I'm not sure of the absolute meaning of "wrongly described". With any luck, you'll find more on this when you research for your article on the composer. I suspect the key thing is going to be to track the evolution of the institution, with rough dates, through its different forms. The article is not very clear about whether it's now only a music school or what.
Micky White's work in the Ospedale's archives is represented in "Vivaldi's Violins", and may be useful. JackyR | Talk 22:08, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Albert. I'm going to try and propose some changes at WT:DYK to tighten up the length requirements for DYK. eg, these articles are at the short end of the scale which I feel are too short. Blnguyen | BLabberiNg 02:44, 23 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
