Ian Roberts (engineer)

edit

Ian Roberts (engineer) has been proposed for deletion. An editor felt this person might not be notable enough for an article. Please review Wikipedia:Notability (people) for the relevant guidelines. If you can improve the article to address these concerns, please do so.

If no one objects to the deletion within five days by removing the "prod" template, the article may be deleted without further discussion. If you remove the prod template, the article will not be deleted, but if an editor is still not satisfied that it meets Wikipedia guidelines, it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Steam engine

edit

Hi, I have removed your recent edit to Steam engine. This is a fairly extraordinary claim, so it needs to be properly attributed. If you have a reliable source to show this claim, please feel free to add the edit back to the article along with a citation. Thanks for understanding, Gwernol 01:37, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Again, please do not add this claim back to the Steam engine article without an appropriate citation from a reliable source. Wikipedia's attribution policy is not optional and is one of our core principles. Please abide by this in your editing when asked to. Thanks, Gwernol 01:48, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing. However, unconstructive edits, such as those you made to User:Gwernol, are considered vandalism and immediately reverted. If you continue in this manner you may be blocked from editing without further warning. Please stop, and consider improving rather than damaging the work of others. Thank you. For your information I am an administrator here who has made nearly 45,000 edits on Wikipedia and steadily contributed over the last several years. I have made significant contributions to the Steam engine article amongst others. The interesting thing about Wikipedia is that none of that matters. What matters are the policies of Wikipedia which have been developed by the community of Wikipedia editors. Any editor here can ask you to abide by the rules of Wikipedia. If you are not prepared to follow the basic rules, there are plenty of other free websites where you are welcome to edit. Meanwhile I strongly object to you vandalizing my user page. If you continue to act in this manner you will be blocked from editing. Thanks, Gwernol 01:59, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hey, how can you call valid information about Polzunov's engine as "vandalizing"??? How DARE you, being an ADMINISTRATOR, deny a proven historical fact about existance of Polzunov's steam engine? Wikipedia is not YOUR property, it's an international source of infromation. Sea diver 02:04, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I did not call your edit to Steam engine vandalism. I asked you to provide a reference to the claim. You are required to provide a citation for any fact added to an article where challenged. I am not denying any facts, I am asking you to provide a proper citation for it. If, as you claim, it is a "proven historical fact" yit should be simple for you to provide a citation from a reliable source for it. I did however call the offensive and unnecessary edit to my user page that you made vandalism, since it was. Please abide by the rules Gwernol 02:10, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wait, Administrator, you've also REMOVED my *source* from the "External Links" unit of the article. I mean my internet-source about Polzunov and his inventions. From your actions, I see only intolerance concerning to contributions of other members, added to YOUR article. You created an article about STEAM ENGINES, you said. So what? Does it mean that nobody can improve it??? As for RELIABLE sources : even in Russian Wiki there is an article about I. Polzunov and his invention, backed by various sources. All my contributions are based on articles of various PRINTED Encyclopaedias. If you want to see Wiki as a source of half-true concerning to various inventions, made by foreign inventors, good for you. If you think, that ONLY British and Scottish inventors were creating steam engines, be happy with that. Indeed, there are many other web-sites where I can add valid information. As an ADMINISTRATOR, you can check all my contributions and remove them all. I thought, that general WIKI's policy was not based on double-standards. It was my mistake. Sea diver 02:29, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I didn't remove it, another administrator did. Sources are not added to the External links section (please read WP:CITE). Sources must be reliable - websites generally don't count (please read WP:RS). On the English Wikipedia we strongly prefer sources to be in English, not Russian (please read WP:A). I am perfectly happy for you to add this information, as I have told you three times now. But, you must supply a proper citation. I do not own the Steam engine article, nor did I create it. But I do care about the quality of the information added to it. Wikipedia is not based on a double standard and this is nothing to do with whether Polzunov is Russian or not. Your paranoia does you a grave disservice.
Please understand that you need to provide a properly cited reliable source for the information you add to any article. My only objection is that you have not provided a proper source. If you do that, I fully support you adding this information. Gwernol 02:38, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, I've just read it WP:A): English-language sources should be used whenever possible, because this is the English Wikipedia. Sources in other languages are acceptable if no English equivalents have been found. In particulary, my source, backing Polzunov's invention, was written in Russian, just because I did not find its English analogue yet. Despite that, an added sentence about Polzunov's steam engine as well, as Russian-written source were immediately removed. So, I did not break any Rule or User Policy Guide of this site. And this is not paranoia, just a clear visible example of double-standards. Second, you said that your own objection was "lack of my proper source". You have to agree, that any work of any edition/contribution to article takes a time. So, I did not finish my contributing to article, when the first sentence of my contribution was already removed.Sea diver 03:10, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Veyer radar?

edit

Can you provide any references for the claim of a 1940's soviet OTH radar? Given that any OTH system requires several pieces of technology that didn't exist until the 1950s, and that the "Fan Hand" name appears in none of my radar references, I find the claim suspect.
