Portmanteau edit

Hey, I RV'd your example - it's a good one, but if you check the discussion page/history you'll see that that keeping that page down to manageable size is like emptying the ocean with a teaspoon. Some editors feel really strongly and patrol this page for the constant additions - what is really needed is a page of examples, because there are thousands of good ones. Just saying. Arthur Augustus edit

Hi again Since you have a cleverness that has avoided me, could you do me a small favour? A week or so ago I created a page about a rider called Arthur Augustus Zimmerman. I gave him his full name because sometimes people call him "Augustus" rather than Arthur. Too late I realised my error. Search under "Arthur Zimmerman" and you don't get Arthur Augustus, even in the disambiguation. And when I tried to change the title, I got a message saying there was already a page (in fact several) of that name and therefore I couldn't do it.

Do you have a knowledge of the jiggery-pokery needed to make the change for me? I think it would clarify things a lot. Please do help if you can. Thanks.

happy days

les Les woodland (talk) 05:48, 14 July 2008 (UTC)les woodlandReply

I've put "see also" tags at the top to allow easy access to the many forms of Zimmerman (Zimmermann, Zimmerman, and Zimerman). Although a search of Arthur Zimmermann will bring up the German secretary, there is now a link to the many disambiguation name pages. I've, therefore, added Arthur Augustus Zimmerman to the Zimmerman page. Because of the many Zimmermans I believe this is the best way to do things. Additionally, I've created a redirect to from Augustus Zimmerman to Arthur Augustus Zimmerman so that a search for "Augustus Zimmerman" will yield your page. I hope this is of some help! Help edit

My userpage says that my staus is unknown. Schuym1 (talk) 03:38, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Did you bypass your cache after importing the script. This is necessary for it to take effect. If you did than the status links should be at the top of your page. If not you'll need to do this. See WP:BYC. Scottydude talk 03:47, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It still doesn't work. Schuym1 (talk) 03:51, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well than the last thing I can think of is to remove the script from your monobook.js page, bypass the cache, re-enter the script and bypass the cache. This should make the links appear at the top of the page. Click one of them and this should save the page User:Schuym1/Status as online (or whatever you clicked). Another, more tedius option is to manually set your status by typing "online" "around" "offline" or "busy" on the page User:Schuym1/Status. If this doesn't work I can find you some more help. Hope it does! Scottydude talk 03:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It didn't save so I clicked save. Now there is no options and it still says unknown. Schuym1 (talk) 04:00, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It works now. Thanks for the help.Schuym1 (talk) 04:03, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
But there is no options on the top.Schuym1 (talk) 04:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
As far as using the options: I don't know what browser you are using but I would make sure that I am properly bypassing the cache. I'm going to ask at the WP:HD for some input. Sorry I couldn't be of better help. Scottydude talk 04:06, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
My skin is is the default, monobook. Schuym1 (talk) 04:15, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't know what you mean by Javascript page. I give up.Schuym1 (talk) 04:16, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry :( By JavaScript page I just meant monobook.js or modern.js or standard.js (the .js stands for JavaScript). But this doesn't affect you because you use the default so the page would be your monobook.js. Well, I guess if you want to you can continue to manually set your status at User:Schuym1/Status or you can ask at the help desk or User:Xenodic User:Xenocidic. You can refer to this conversatation like this [[User talk:Scottydude#Help]] assuming I don't archive this page for a while (which I probably won't). Again, sorry I couldn't be of better help I just can't seem to know exactly what the problem is with out seeing you do it. Scottydude talk 04:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think the problem may be that the appropriate status subpages may not have been set up properly. As I understand it, the script just automates the process of making the necessary edits to the status subpage, but only of that page is set up properly. Does that help? – ukexpat (talk) 16:52, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
As I understand it, the script isn't running at all, the buttons don't appear at all for the user. The page works fine as the user manually did it once. Scottydude talk 18:18, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Main page comment edit

Hi. Yes I like the main banner. The reason why I removed my comment is because I still feel it needs a lot of work. I would recommend boosting the color to the page giving some weight to the different sections. Another reason was that it looked like you couldn't type in a search on the main page but would have to search on a different page The Bald One White cat 18:55, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well thanks. As far as the search, is your concern due to the link that says "Search"? I could see how this would cause confusion to a new visitor. Also, I've considered putting some color in boxes but my original idea was to use the natural color scheme of monobook. Anyways, thanks for your thoughts. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Scottydude proposal.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Scottydude proposal.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:33, 4 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

My earlier enquiry about new Gordon Landsborough page edit

Hi Scottydude Thanks for your help and nice comments. I've got my page ready to publish but I can't find the "move" button you're talking about! Where is it? Do I have to click on edit this page first?

By the way, I created a link to a page (Panther Books) that doesn't exist, because I think there ought to be one. Is that Ok and if so did I do it right?

Also, there is one section here where I made a statement about the many people he helped set up their own publishing companies. This is based on the memories of my 4 siblings (I'm Gordon Landsborough's daughter) and the unpublished memoirs of a good friend of his. I can't substantiate it in any other way. Is it OK to put this in the article then?

Thanks for trying but actually I'd like the divs to be centred horizontally... as in, still as they are right now (they look perfectly in 1024x768 pixels) but at least centred on bigger monitors (since, as they are now they lean to the right on bigger monitors, even though they fill the whole page on 1024x768) so there's still space around them but not as much as possible (a lot of space is wasted if they're vertically centred). -- Mentisock 10:33, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Auto-bio edit

Hi,

This is Jim "THE DAD" Keith and I had asked some questions regarding entering data or bio material.

No doubt, I am not a computer person, but for over 20 years I have been in the comedy business and have had some national exposure, etc...

One of the police officers I work with mentioned that Wikipedia had a listing for COMEDIANS and had me check it out. I saw many of the guys that I have worked with, performed with....etc, and thought it was a GREAT place for exposure.

ALL COMEDIANS push for exposure....more bookings, etc.

My main calling, is that I use comedy for a much better reason than JUST entertaining.....

For over 28 years, I have been speaking to first time offender juveniles via the St. Louis Family (Juvenile) Courts..........using a comedy based program to turn these kids around.....and maybe help them and their families have better relationships. Over those years......thru the courts, schools and where ever I am invited, i.e. churches, businesses, law enforcement agencies....I have talked to THOUSANDS of kids.....and adults. At 65, nearing retirement, I would love to take this program nationally. I have been discussed on Oprah, only briefly. The Leno show's Jimm Broggan has talked to me about my program....etc, etc....little nibbles............NO BITES !

Films, national television, national FUNNIEST COP competitions...I figured, even tho I do not TRAVEL as a comedian....I am a DAD and I have that along with my police career......I am locked into the St. Louis area.

Back in the early years, CEDRIC the ENTERTAINER, KATHLEEN MADIGAN, the SKLAR BROTHERS and I all did comedy for FREE on open mics in St. Louis.

I thought, WIKIPEDIA might be a place to let folks know.....about my LAUGHTER & HEART TUGS program.

Thanks,

Fair use rationale for File:SociopathNextDoor.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:SociopathNextDoor.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 15:27, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Userpagebottom.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:Userpagebottom.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. May I ask for your assistance? edit

Hi,

Are you still interested in the idea of at least some non-admins being able to view deleted pages? I understand that the proposal was shot down previously by foundation counsel; however I believe I have at least two possible answers to their concerns.

One possibility is to make this prospective (apparently the antonynm of retrospective although I'm not so sure) - that is to say that only edits deleted after its implementation can be viewed. For revisions such as libelous edits or copyright violations and so on, there can be a hard delete, lying some way between this soft delete and oversight, which will function just like a present deletion. Admins could also have the power to toggle a deletion from hard to soft (or to undelete) - so selected deletions made before this feature is implemented could be made soft.

The second possibility is to introduce a procedure somewhat like RFA where users are given permission to view deleted edits by the community. As admin privileges are currently granted not just based on trust in general, but also on trust that the tools will be used appropriately, there is a much greater pool of users who would be eligible to be given this permission.

And of course, it is perfectly possible to use both of these systems at once.

I have cross posted this to a few users who were active in the discussion in 2008 - I don't feel this is a violation of CANVASS because I have not made the proposal myself - the reality is I need an experienced Wikipedia with some "street cred" to make it. I already attempted to steer a discussion of a similar proposal this way, but sadly that discussion is irretrievable (see here - or even better, don't!). Because I have posted this to a few users, I would be greatful if you would reply at User_talk:Egg Centric/Proposal and perhaps we can get a discussion going!

Thank you!

Speedy deletion nomination of Wikipedia:HDH edit

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia:HDH, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Shortcut to the help desk's header template. No need for a shortcut.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Speedy deletion nomination of Edward Freytag edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Edward Freytag requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Speedy deletion nomination of John's Korner Bar edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on John's Korner Bar requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Proposed deletion of James DiGiacomo edit

The article James DiGiacomo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Can't find any independent (ie NOT affiliated to his religious order or his university) sources to verify that he would pass WP:NAUTHOR or WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 09:19, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of International Samaritan edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on International Samaritan, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
