Please remove your comment from my talk page as my Wikipedia changes are legitimate good-faith additions intended to verify article content and help build the encyclopedia. It is a time-accumulative service for me to go through and pro-actively update broken links, as 404's create bad user experiences. I do not appreciate your presuppositions and in the future would request that you learn to differentiate between SEO and creating a better Encyclopedia for all. Thank you.

When an online reference used in an article is no longer "live" (404 or other errors), we do not delete it. In most instances, an archive version of that webpage will be available on archive.org, and we add the archive-url and archive-date to the citation template. When an archived version is unavailable, examine the citation: in the cases of a magazine, journal, book, or other reference where a reader might still be able to verify the content using offline sources, simply remove the URL portion of the ref. For web-only references, append Template:Dead link. Schazjmd (talk) 15:33, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Schazjmd, thank you for the information. I always check the Wayback Machine first (Archive.org) before looking for another reference. There was no archived data for any of the 404's I have ever added reclamation links to. The only appending I have done was for web-only references. The administrator above failed to do their independent research. I appreciate the information and reminder surrounding the issue.

Schieler (talk) 16:56, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Well, I found an archive link for the reference you recently removed from Carpet cleaning, which is why it appeared to me that you were not aware of it. Schazjmd (talk) 17:11, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Can you please show me? I was under the impression the admin above would have reverted to Archive.org if there was a page available? When I look myself, Archive.org is showing no information found for the url. Schieler
archived link I didn't put the ref back with the archive-url added because it did a poor job of supporting the specific content. Schazjmd (talk) 19:27, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't find your protestations above believable, as you have never added an archive-url to a reference. These are your edits that involve references:

  • Diff where you replaced a reference, claiming 404 when it is in fact available on archive.org.
  • Another diff where you replaced a reference, claiming 404 when it is in fact available on archive.org.
  • In this diff you removed the archived URL itself.
  • In this diff you again removed an archived url.
  • In this diff you replaced live refs with your preferred URL.

And then we come to the ref on carpet cleaning today, which I've already demonstrated is available on archive.org. I'd suggest you avoid editing existing references until you learn to do so correctly. Schazjmd (talk) 19:42, 13 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
