MGS 4 Reception

edit

See, the thing is, GTA IV did get near-universal acclaim from critics. The vast majority gave it 10s, or high 9s, including all the big review sites and magazines, making it the second and fourth best games ever on GameRankings. To say MGS 4 received this too (regardless of what MetaCritic says) is misleading to the reader as it implies the same as GTA IV - that the vast majority of the reviews were 10s or high 9s. This simply isn't true. Please stop adding it. Thanks! Fin© 10:26, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but no thanks. I have a valid counter argument to your claim that GTA 4 got 10's or 9s from the vast majority of critics, including the big review sites and magazines. In fact MGS4 so far only got 3 to 4 8s', really high 9s and and a vast majority (a.k.a mostly) of 10s. On the other hand, GTA 4 has gotten 5 8s.
GTA 4 for Xbox 360, PS3 (from Metacritic and Game Rankings):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game Chronicles = 88
There are issues with controls, gameplay and graphics.
GamerNode = 87
The nature of the open-ended gameplay still makes for memorable random and not-so-random occurrences you'll repetitiously be reciting to friends, but for the most part it's nothing we haven't seen before.
GameCritics = 85
Perhaps the most frustrating mistake the game makes is in the car combat. When this works, it's one of the game's bright points, as passengers blast away at other cars, shredding metal, blowing out wheels, and slaughtering the occupants, but when it fails, the game is crippled by that failure.
Destructoid = 80
As a game, it is flawed in many aspects, but as an immersing experience, GTA IV is simply unparalleled.
Console Obsession = 80
It's just a shame that they have taken a step backwards in another few areas. With that said, It may be pushing it to be giving it a perfect 10/10 or even a 9, but flaws aside, it’s one of the most engaging games of 2008. Perhaps some overly mature and wrinkly people would say that was a criminal statement, but the real criminal thing would be to listen to their attention seeking moaning. So don’t.
So your argument is invalid, i am sorry to say. Nice try, but the WP:NPOV guidelines and I need a better argument and reference than what you claim in the same way you asked for a better reference for my "Native Resolution" source even though it's actually from the source itself (a.k.a. the developer and publisher) you can actually try it for yourself and it will automatically go to 1080p, provided that the PS3 is hooked up to a 1080p capable TV, like how lair and GT5 Prologue do without messing with any of your settings on the PS3. So please stop undoing and misrepresenting the facts and statements of this game, when i could technically say GTA 4 received "high praise" instead of near-universal acclaim according to your argument, which can be used for every game out there practically. However, i have a feeling that you and others will change it back even if i try to change the GTA 4 statement into the current MGS 4 one. Again, please stop undoing and misrepresenting the facts and statements of this game and it's wikipedia page since it's misleading the reader as it implies that MGS 4 is the same as say Rock Band or Call of Duty 4, or Mass effect for PC or practically any game out there with a 90 or above aggregate rating - that the vast majority of the reviews were low 9's and some mid 9s. THIS SIMPLY ISN'T TRUE. Moreover, it does not follow the WP:NPOV guidelines. With all this in mind, the vast majority of critics so far gave it [MGS4] 10s, or high 9s, including most, if not all, of the big review sites and magazines, making it the second "best games ever" for PS3 or any other home system on Metacritic as well as the third "best game ever for the PS3" on Gamestats. Thus, please stop undoing it and pass on the message to others too. Thanks! :-) Sceeuk (talk) 12:21, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hello again. You're right about implying MGS 4 is the same as Call of Duty 4, that would be incorrect to imply, as Call of Duty 4 has a higher rating on Gamerankings, I think it's ok for Rock Band though, as it has got the same score. Correct about about Mass Effect, it's slightly lower. GTA IV received 10s from 52% of reviews, 8s from 3% of reviews. In contrast, MGS 4 has received 36% 10s and 8s from 25% - I think 3% 8s is much closer to "near-universal acclaim" than 25%. Sure, if this percentage goes down to under 5 or 10%, I'd have no trouble adding near-universal acclaim.
Your statement that "GTA 4 has gotten 5 8s" is incredibly misleading - there are far more reviews out (~80) for GTA IV than MGS (which has ~20). Displaying content of these reviews is also irrelevant, if you want I could give you pages and pages of reviews praising it.
I have no idea where you came up with the statement "making it the second "best games ever" for PS3 or any other home system on Metacritic" as Metacritic has it down around 75th best game ever. Your statement about GameStats is a bit strange too, as the two games above Metal Gear are Call of Duty and GTA, which you implied were worse than it...
Also, as regards a source on 1080p, the back of the box is not reliable. My GTA IV box says 1080p too, but it's upscaled. You'll need a verifiable source, such as a press release from Sony/Kojima Productions or even a game review. Thanks! Fin© 12:50, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just had a quick look at GTA's Metacritic page, and it says "universal acclaim", no "near". The fact that the GTA IV wiki page does not have this statement shows that Metacritic isn't actually used for reception descriptions. Thanks! Fin© 12:59, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
