How do I recover and article and know exactly which parts require reviewing and editing? Sbsalam (talk) 18:30, 23 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi there! You received a lot of great feedback below from User:TheMusicExperimental. I suggest you copy or move Talk:Yazmin Aziz to Draft:Yazmin Aziz, where you can continue working on it by following the recommendations at Help:Your first article. When you feel that the article is ready, you can submit it for review by an experienced editor by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the draft to submit it. A reviewer will then look at your draft and move it to the main article space or give you feedback on how to improve it. You can always edit the page, even while waiting for a review. Happy editing! Speedy deletion nomination of Yazmin Aziz

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Yazmin Aziz, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. A tag has been placed on Yazmin Aziz requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Finding/Improving articles re: Yazmin Aziz

edit

Hello sbsalam, I am not an administrator or someone who approves articles for creation, but I am someone who works often with music-related articles about authors that are not mainstream in the USA. Some of my experience may be useful for you as you work to make the Yazmin Aziz article better. I found the content of your original submission is on the Talk page for the article [1].

I think you may be facing an uphill battle with this article because some editors may think it reads too much like a promotional piece. In many ways, making it shorter can help you. For example, it is not very notable if a musician has music on Spotify because nearly all musicians have music on Spotify. So mentioning that in the article doesn't help. Similarly, the external links section will appear to some editors like a bunch of paid links to the artist's media properties and further cement their belief that this article is just an advertisement.

When discussing living people the thing that is often mentioned is "notability" which means something specific at Wikipedia. It means that mainstream news sources or books or journals have written about the person. With this in mind, you will want to make sure that you have included any important newspapers that perhaps write a feature about Yazmin. For musicians there's a specific list of things that you can refer to. I encourage you to look this over and read it and try to fulfill as many of these as you can: WP:NMUSIC

In terms of specific things you might want to do: move the content of the article from the Talk page to the Article page itself (leave the speedy delete tag in place or an editor will assume you're trying to hide things). Ways to improve include shortening the school things (while interesting they aren't notable--no newspaper was writing about how well she did in her studies as being an exceptional thing, for example), focusing on the releases but simplify to a simple short list without needing to belabor that they're available on Spotify. Make sure that all of your references at least mention Yazmin Aziz.

If I was writing this and trying to get it to stick around I would maybe focus on:

  • the competitions she won or placed in the top 3 because Item #9 for WP:NMUSIC is "Has won first, second or third place in a major music competition."
  • any music of hers that is on rotation on radio because item #11 is "as been placed in rotation nationally by a major radio or music television network."
  • the article from The Sun Daily because that is a lengthy feature in a mainstream publication because Item #1 is "Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself." She will need at least another like that though so you can say that there are "multiple."
  • The feature performance on ASAP might also qualify for #12 which is "Has been a featured subject of a substantial broadcast segment across a national radio or television network."

None of these are guarantees but if you rewrite with them in mind, and remove anything at all that isn't directly related to establishing that Yazmin Aziz does things that people write about, you'll have a better chance. I encourage you to look for other artists who are emerging and see what their pages look like. If you do the things above and let me know when you are done I'll see if I can help by reading it and making more edits. If they delete it you can keep working on it or start work on a new draft until you get it right or until Yazmin has enough different press articles for her notability to be established. Good luck! Hello (talk) thanks for sharing the information. Have made the necessary edits. Do advise how can I share this with you for review? Do I just put it on drafts? I'm not quite sure how this works. Thank you. Sbsalam (talk) 11:21, 24 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi sbsalam, I started a new draft for Yazmin Aziz but haven't had time to flesh it out yet. You can find it here: [2] Feel free to edit there. Please don't submit it yet though, I can help you make sure it doesn't get flagged for being promotional. Be sure also to check to check the "Talk" page for the draft as well. I've organized your original citations in to the things that I think will help the most, if you stick to that list it will go better. It's also a place where you and I (and anyone else who edits the page) can talk about the content of the Article. Here's the Talk page: [[3]]. I can tell from your determination that you really want to make an article for Yazmin Aziz and I personally believe she has enough citations to be included. Many wikipedia editors, however, will not be so sure so if the page is going to get made and survive we will have to write it according to Wikipedia rules (some of which are tedious, but I don't make the rules haha). TheMusicExperimental (talk) 20:08, 25 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi again (talk) really appreciate your assistance. I think she deserves it and yes, I too feel she has enough citations to be included. I've made some changes. Please feel free to edit accordingly so we could move on to publishing the article again. Thank you very much

Working together on the Yazmin Aziz Article

edit

Hi sbsalam! I see you're getting in to the Article now and making edits. Be sure to look at the "View History" sometimes so that you can see what I was thinking/doing when I edit things. I am almost certainly going to make a few changes to the stuff you add (and you should likewise feel good about changing the things I've added). You can also leave public messages for me and anyone else editing the Article on the "Talk" tab, it works just like this Talk page here. I'm calling it a night but will probably look at it again tomorrow. TheMusicExperimental (talk) 05:09, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi sbsalam, thank you for your research into Yazmin Aziz. The articles you gathered from mainstream news sources in Malaysia were important to the creation of the new article about Yazmin Aziz. I had a lot of fun learning about her and her work by helping out with this article creation. If you have any questions feel free to ask me on my Talk page or ping me here (use the u|TheMusicExperimental tag to let me know) or if you have ideas or questions about the content of the article use the Talk page associated with the article. Hi TheMusicExperimental, thank you so much for helping out with the article review. Really appreciate it. Can I just confirm that the page has already been published? How do we change the article name to just Yazmin Aziz? Also, how do I add a photo of Yazmin and what is allowed? Sorry, honestly not familiar but I'm doing my best here. Thank you once again and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Sbsalam 20:31, 26 October 2020 (UTC) Sbsalam (talk) 20:31, 26 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi sbsalam! It's ok, we all start somewhere. It has been fun to make and I have enjoyed learning about her music.

I'm not sure how to get it moved to a plain Yazmin Aziz article. It might need an admin to do that. We should research "Article move" and see what it requires. I know sometimes it's a hassle if there was already an Article there because someone might think it should be deleted due to the old page.

For an image there are some specific things that need to be in place for the image to be able to be used on Wikipedia. The image needs to be free of copyright so that Wikipedia or anyone else can use the image. And you need to know who took the photo (sometimes called the "Author" of the photo). I added an "Image Requested" banner to the Talk page and that can walk you through it. One way, if you have such a photo, is to upload it to Flicker and choose the CC-BY-SA license. Then you can copy the URL of the Flickr upload into the Wikipedia tool when you click the "upload button." There's also a short tutorial comic on that page to explain it better. Main thing is: you need to be the one who can assign the copyright to be freely usable by anyone and you need to credit the photographer. Good luck! TheMusicExperimental (talk) 00:27, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Turns out it wasn't hard to move the page. You can see it now at Yazmin Aziz. TheMusicExperimental (talk) 00:36, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi TheMusicExperimental, Wow, thanks, that was quick. So I found something and was wondering if this is something we're allowedd to use: https://www.flickr.com/photos/malique/50145857496/in/photolist-2jpdCqM-2jpeRvi-2jpaQYf-2jpdCnW-2jpdCpE-2jpdCth-2jpaQXo-2jpaR57-2jpdCiT-2jpeRx7-2jpdCz4-2jpdCrP-2jpdCrd-2jpaQXZ-2jpaR4q-2jpaR1j-2jpeRvJ-2jpeRuB-2jpeRou-2jtGQYu. Otherwise, I can always upload something which I personally took on Flickr. Do advise and thanks again for your time Sbsalam (talk) 05:00, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Give it a try and see if it works. If it doesn't then what will happen is that someone will come along and delete it and then you'll need to upload a picture you have and assign it proper copyrights. That's what I'd try. I'm still figuring out the image thing too. Take care, TheMusicExperimental (talk) 13:54, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi TheMusicExperimental, Tried this but it is not right. Wonder what else can be done:

Photo uploads

edit

Hi there, I'm starting a new section just for photo uploads, hope that's ok. I'm definitely not an expert at photo uploads and copyright permissions but it's something I'd like to get better at too. What I've learned so far is that the easiest is when the image is already on Flickr with a license that works. But that's almost never the case with things like this. The possible things to try after that are:

  1. If you know the copyright holder, ask them to upload it and grant the permissions. Or...
  2. If you know the copyright holder, ask them ahead, then upload it yourself and ask them to fill out permissions via the Generator (see my sample email to a copyright holder below).
  3. For bios and albums etc where the artist has a Press Kit, you can upload it and make very clear that the image is a Promotional Use photo from the artist's press kit. This is a last resort, the image will probably be challenged and deleted unless you identify exactly where you got the image--which better be a link to the artist's press kit on either their own website or the website of their label or management etc. This doesn't work very often, but it does work out for Album covers.
  4. Upload your own image that you took yourself.

Options 1 and 2 above are the best bet (option 2 is usually better because it's easier for the copyright holder). They take time and making contact with people etc, but it results in the work sticking around instead of getting deleted.

The template I use for option 2, sending to the actual copyright holder (after previously asking them if it's ok to post the image)

Hi,

I’ve uploaded your image to the WikiCommons project (which is where Wikipedia holds images). The project needs a specific sort of permissions granting, including sending notification that they have permission to use the image. Here is what will need to be done or the file will get removed in 4 or 5 days:

1. Go to this page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_OTRS_release_generator

2. Click Start

3. Select “I am the copyright holder”

4. Enter your name (i.e. INSERT NAME OF THE COPYRIGHT OWNER HERE SO THEY CAN COPY/PASTE)

5. Select “I want to release the media work”

6. Select “I or others have already uploaded the file to Wikimedia Commons

7. For the Wikimedia Commons filename enter: INSERT THE NAME OF THE FILE HERE SO THEY CAN COPY/PASTE

8. Select one of the available creative commons licenses that works best for you.

9. If you agree with all of that, then select the I agree to terms checkbox.

That should do the trick and keep the image up on Wikipedia.

Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for your generosity in allowing this image to be used.

Photo options

edit

I looked around and I think the copyright owner for the image you'd like to use is Yukie Sarto who is a professional photographer. Since they usually make their living from taking such photos they often prefer to keep their copyrights. But it might be worth asking anyway.

Another thing would be to see if Yazmin Aziz currently has a manager or whether she handles publicity herself (which would be normal for an emerging artist). A manager or publicist would be able to provide promotional images. She clearly has a bunch, because there are many professional photos of her in the news articles etc. You just want to figure out who owns them and have them give the proper permissions for use.

For promotional photos, Yazmin Aziz may have paid the photographer a fee so that she can retain the copyright to the image. If this is the case (she would have to look over the contract she made with the photographer) then Yazmin Aziz herself can assign the copyright via the Generator as the image owner. If she didn't have a contract--if the photographers are her friends and they just took some photos to help the portfolio etc which is again a common thing for creative people to do--then the photographer still owns the copyright of the image and needs to be the one who gives the permissions.

Hope this helps TheMusicExperimental (talk) 17:25, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
