Translating from WP id

edit

HI there, I need your thoughts. I notice there is a bit of translating into English from Indonesian wikipedia articles. These are unsourced and this bothers me. The thinking seems to be, "just write it and we can find the sources later". Well, isn't that putting the cart before the proverbial horse? And it makes no sense. one should only contribute from sources anyway, so these things should be on hand. case in point: Catholicism in Indonesia. I'm a firm believer in 'no info is better than bad info'. According to WP:ATT nothing should be here that is not properly sourced.

I think we should get strict on this. I think all Indonesia editors should be reminded, unreferenced tags and cn tags placed as appropriate, and info removed after say 1 or 2 months. What do you think? --Merbabu 01:37, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

RE:Portal:Western Australia

edit

Yep long way from the dunsborough bakery, ill add a related portal box later today, just havn't gotten around to it yet. Its true that very few users help maintain portals, there is a way to get around this. I have used the random portal component template, this allows the portal to refresh itself with new info whenever the server is purged. This way the portal always looks new and fresh. Hossen27 08:00, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

(dedit conflict) I have finished the related portal box, what do you think. I don't think Portal:Adelaide exists its just a redirect. centralising project/portal/notceboard to one location is a good idea, should be looked into. Hossen27 08:31, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks the selected communities is just an idea (may not stay). It will showcase our towns and cities only. Hossen27 08:40, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Like I said just an idea, I was going off what they have at Portal:Texas, both a article and spotlight city. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hossen27 (talkcontribs) 08:51, 29 April 2007 (UTC).Reply

I dont know if this is what you where after but we could centralise all our tasks onto one template so it doesnt get to confusing. I had a go here (Template:WikiProject Western Australia announcement board). it could be added to the projects main page along with the portal and countless others. Hossen27 12:45, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

That seems a good idea. I've transcluded it into the WP:WA page (with an edit link) and removed some of the duplicated detail. —Moondyne 14:27, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's just a cleaning work actually. There are many similar articles, so it's time to make them right. The list is not yet finished, still a long way to go. Also recent name change, moving and redirection by you-know-who is a warning that we should make appropriate naming for administrative places. After I finish the whole list, I might want to introduce proper naming for provinces, regencies, cities, subdistricts and villages. But first, the list should be ready. unsigned comments

Category talk pages and article talk pages should be considered in exactly the same way, although admittedly no-one ever reads category talk pages. I would generally not remove such comments, unless they were "off-topic"; talk pages are for discussing improvement to the article but often you see unsigned comments from anons discussing the topic. These you might consider removing. Remember to AGF but if its plainly a "stupid question or statement", ditch it. WP:TALK is the guideline. —Moondyne 01:58, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I was about to warn the editor but I noticed that you already did. I think articles should use both measurement systems - we're an international encyclopedia. I remember some major edit wars relating to removal of imperial/metric units in the part and I really wouldn't like to see a repeat of that. Australia still seems to use imperial units for some things like people's heights and sometimes weight. I would've gone to the meetup with Jimbo if it was at any time other than breakfast - I really don't function well in the early mornings. I'll try to come to any future ones. I think that the Oz milhist tag is probably not all that relevant - the medal's are generally not 'historical' in themselves (although recipients of those medals may be). I recently retired and decided this would be a new interest. I have been researching for an article I plan to write and am nearly ready to go. Am finding it a bit hard to work out how you actually enter a whole new article - though I have some ideas I think. I do find all the pages about how to do this and how to do that a bit confusing at present, but I'm getting there. Anyhow, today I decided to edit an article as my first go at getting my feet wet. I found it quite intuitive and had a good time. I edited the article and then added the person to their year birth and death lists. Woo Hoo! it all worked. Soon I'll do my new article. I'm interested mainly in Aussie lit and films/TV ... but have other interests as well. Sterry2607 13:32, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, that's great that you used to know her husband. I feel I have a lot of 'connections' to the Jolleys: my husband's name is Leonard (same as her husband), I'm (was) a librarian (same as he was), I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen and describe Elizabeth Jolley as the Australian Jane Austen, and I saw Elizabeth Jolley in person (not met her) when she came to Canberra for a literary lunch or two. She was just amazing.

Thanks re editors. I'll stand up for myself if I need to...

You know this Wiki stuff is a bit confusing. The user talk (and other) pages say to add your new talk at the bottom of the page BUT you go to the bottom of the page and there's no obvious way to add anything there. I finally - and I mean it took a while - worked out that I had to click on the + sign on the tab at the top of the page. Is there something I'm missing in the instruction? I regard myself as 'averagely' computer and internet literate. Sterry2607 13:51, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Moondyne has fixed it, but the fix might take a little while to stick. When a template is re-categorised, Wikipedia doesn't recategorise the transcluding pages instantaneously. Instead it puts that task on its asynchronous job queue, and does it when it has a bit of spare time, which could be anywhere from five minutes to a few days away, depending on how big the job is, and how long the queue is. Hesperian 02:27, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
P.S. As I write, Special:Statistics is saying that the job queue is 458,678 entries long. So you might have quite a while to wait before Wikipedia gets around to responding to Moondyne's fix. Hesperian 02:29, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Narrow gauge railways

edit

Technically any railway with a gauge less than 56 is a narrow gauge railway, down to miniature railways. So the 24 gauge railways of Tasmania are definitely narrow gauge. Gwernol 23:56, 14 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Narrow gauge" is the term widely used in the literature for these railways. Railways are generally categorized into narrow gauge, standard gauge and broad gauge - see these articles for details and extensive citations that support this. The reason is there are significant technical differences between these types of railway. You can of course also refer to them by the specific gauge, but the most comprehensive and accurate terminology is to use both the gauge and the type. Gwernol 00:37, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Marjorie Barnard's dates are (1897-1987) and Flora Eldershaw's are (1897-1956). I don't believe I can add this to your (whose?) list. Underpopulated categories

edit

I assume you're referring to your discovery of last month (it could be longer, sorry, my memory fails me when I've had some time away from the wiki)? More and more of late, underpopulated categories have been defended as being "part of a hierarchical system" (take albums for example). Many of those categories contain only a few entries, some only one. I'm a supporter of categories for 6+ articles, but there's many who disagree. What to do? I don't know. If it were up to me, I'd delete the lot. -- Longhair\talk 09:35, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the question that needs to be asked of underpopulated categories is "is there room for this category to expand?". A category like Category:Cinema chains in Australia isn't likely to expand for a while, if ever, whereas Category:Australian nurses just had the {{popcat}} tag removed, as it now holds 9 articles. Some are simply cases of overcategorisation for the sake of it. -- Longhair\talk 10:09, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome ... i was personally stunned at how mixed up and tangled many of the categories are, and how few of the Western Australian cultural events and organisations actually have articles, and many of the ones that do are in the wrong cats (not even relating to Western Australia) or are for WA but in the Perth one despite not being specific to Perth, like for example, almost no Perth band would actually fit in a Perth category as they spend so much time touring the regions. i am sorry if i offended any sensibilities! Zivko85 09:52, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

That is cool... It's organisations like Artrage and FORM, the Perth Pride Parade, Kulcha, the stubbish nature of Perth Internatioanl Arts Festival, and the lack of coordination of WA music, festival and events in the category system that was one of the major reasons I finally signed up an account. Hi SatuSuro. How do you get a heading changed? There is a Disambiguation Page for Tom Kruse. I'd like to create at least a stub for one of them. He is described as Tom Kruse (bushman) but I believe he is better known as a mailman (eg I have a biography called 'The mailman of the Birdsville Track') and so I think that would be better as the qualifier. Is it only administrators who can fix headings like this? Sterry2607 12:54, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Doh! I see now. Silly me. Anyhow, thanks very much...I'm getting there. I will do at least a Stub on him in the next few days. He had already been set up as a link (is that what you call it when you link to no article?) from another article and then yesterday I linked him from one of mine. BTW, how do people go about getting photos for their subjects eg biographies for living people or those just died. I've found a couple on the web but they are under copyright. Hi SatuSuro, I was updating this page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaacs%2C_Australian_Capital_Territory - and when I saved it, it hasn't saved the end of the document - the References heading which I added and the See also which was there before. I'm guessing it's a formatting thing but can't work it out. Any ideas? Sterry2607 04:33, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Templates

edit

Feel free to pinch mine... A template should look exactly like the text it's replacing, except for the fact it has variables or conditionals (i.e. if this then display this, else display that). Variables are always in triple curly brackets. Two types of variables:

  • Unnamed - eg {{{RailGauge|1}}} or {{{RailGauge|24}}}. Sometimes the simplest is in fact the best. For example to use the LandInfo template in a page you'd simply put {{LandInfo WA|m|A|2007-05-25}} - thinking "landinfo, metro, letter A, date checked". (If you look in the source for {{LandInfo WA}} you'll see it has two conditionals as well - one to allow for the fact the URL for towns/suburbs starting "A" is a generic one, and the other to switch between metropolitan and country in the URLs)
  • Named - eg {{{county}}} or {{{province}}}. Especially useful for more complicated templates, or where there's a risk of ambiguity. If you were using this template then where it's needed in the text you'd use:
{{Blah
| county = ____
| province = ____
}}

I learned by copying others to start with, it's not a bad way to learn :) Obviously works best with the simple ones - don't start with something like {{Infobox Australian Place}} for example, with about 25 variables and tonnes of conditionals - even I don't completely understand how it works (I do about 70%). Documentation for the conditionals is at m:ParserFunctions but it's not something you need to know much about. Orderinchaos 12:20, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi SatuSuro

In repsonse to your message about the Newtown article - glad to see someone's taking an interest. I'm happy to discuss the changes and welcome any suggestions/advice. However, I hoped that you might have noticed that I've been going through adding numerous citations to this article today. I think the whole thing still needs major revision and reorganisation and would welcome your input. I'm going to add a message on the discussion page shortly.

BTW, re: residency, I've lived in the Newtown/Camperdown area since 1984 and also have many family connections to the area dating back to the mid-1800s.

Newtown again

edit

Hi Satu - OK think I see what you mean now. To be honest I haven't even looked at many other articles about Sydney suburbs (to my shame!). I will check out some of the other pages and I agree that we undoubtedly need more work on the many stubs.

E.g. I work in Ashfield and have a good deal of info about it, and I grew up in Toongabbie, which has a LONG European history dating back to 1789, and I want to address that too ... but I only have one life, two hands, and no internet at home, so bear with me :) However I do think Newtown deserves a sizeable feature, because it is unique both in Sydney and Australia, for dozens of reasons.

Definitions are a bit tricky, I agree -- Eveleigh and Darlington are good cases in point. Eveleigh was a "suburb" long ago, and one could argue that a discussion of the rail workshops area could just as feasibly be placed under Redfern (or Waterloo, or Alexandria) so that has to be thrashed out. Likewise Darlington -- it used to be a suburb, but since almost all of it has now been swallowed up by Sydney Uni, it becomes problematical. I haven't looked at the Glebe article, but the same sort of questions undoubtedly apply to Glebe /Forest Lodge. Anyway it's great to get some input on this and look fwd to working with you. If you have any pics from the 70s PLEASE scan 'em and load 'em up! Cheers!

Groovy - its probably quite valuable. I know I had a stack of them at one stage but they got chucked out long ago. I had this idea last night for a new Go-Set article and had written a couple of hundred words this morning after (incorrectly) checking that the article didn't already exist. And then thisarvo I found it with a hyphen in the name (and to make it worse, its been there for yonks!). A couple of hours wasted - GRRR. If you're in the mood to review some mining articles, any of the following could do with some expert attention (I don't recall exactly what I once asked you to check out):

  • Rum Jungle, Northern Territory - confused
  • Compass Resources - this might have been what I asked for help on - look at the talk page - lots of negative and misleading stuff at one stage
  • Ranger Uranium Mine - safety and tailings references are 15, 30 and 10 years old, claiming the unsafe storage of radioactive tailings in a pit that used to be full of Uranium? Generally negative tone in lower part of article, suggesting remediation provisions are insufficient.

i do not know what happened, suddenly info dissapeared. I am very sorry if you think I am a Wiki-vandal! I wrote quite a lot of this article and also designed the Go-Set charts website, as Moondyne and Ss112 will attest to. it's on my user profile. I was also going to add links to sources that source some of the info on the site. Rusty201 07:49, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to add this from my website (written by Jeffrey Turnbull) as a source link for info on the page:

http://www.poparchives.com.au/gosetcharts/whatwas.html

I also would like to add the following to the charts section:

Go-Set began publishing Australia's first album chart on 23 May 1970 [1]

Please do place the charts info wherever you feel its is appropriate. Would you like me to try and work out how to revert to the previous version with the chart below? Again, I am sorry. My computer must be getting old! I rebooted it after the mishap. Also part of what I wanted to add had also dissapeared.

I was also wondering if a link should be put on the little charts table that was at the bottom of the Go-Set page which featured the Go-Set charts to the Go-Set charts website: http://www.poparchives.com.au/gosetcharts/index.html

Or if a new wikipedia page was warranted for the Go-Set charts. Rusty201 08:03, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{Indonesia-geo-stub}} split

edit

Hi - sorry I didn't mention on the noticeboard. I thought that the split would be clear, but I'll try to explain stubsorting's rationale. I created templates for each province by name (and with the letters N, S, E, W, or C for north, south, east, west, and central in front for some) because in the past when we've done regional splits, it's just made us more work in the future. Whether or not they're 65, we've been creating them and merging them with bigger categories so that when they hit 65, we can just change the category in the stub template and avoid having to go back to every article to change the stub itself.

Because of that, I grouped the different provinces into categories by island or region as set forth in the Indonesian provinces template. This was done because the Indonesia-geo-stubs were nearing 1,000 in the main category. What I asked Grutness about was how the last two templates - for West Papua and Papua - might overlap with Papua New Guinea's provincial names (how it might create conflict with future stub templates). Now that I've checked up on that, I plan to create two more templates - WPapua-geo-stub and Papua-geo-stub. Next, I'll create a category for Maluku and Papua geography stubs. Sound okay? Aelfthrytha 03:26, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Already followed your link to the noticeboard and posted what I wrote to you onto the messageboard. Aelfthrytha 03:30, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Would you like me to get a full list up on the noticeboard of all templates created? Aelfthrytha 03:38, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'll get on it as soon as I finish creating the last two new templates - actually, it'd be helpful because then I could have (hopefully) assistance in sorting the stubs out. Aelfthrytha 03:42, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aelfthrytha 03:48, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't quite understand your last point. Could you try to explain again? Also, could we pick one place - the message board, your talk page, my talk page, so we can keep the discussion all together? Aelfthrytha 04:11, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Last comment for now - the reason for this split is to make it easier for editors to find articles. When Indonesia-geo-stub was small, things could be found easily. When it gets to 1,000 articles, it becomes very difficult for any editor to find somehing related to what they know about or want to write about. By splitting this way, editors can find articles about their area of knowledge much faster and in a logical fashion rather than dealing with a category of 1,000 + unsorted articles. That's why stub sorting exists. Aelfthrytha 05:51, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hey, it all worked out in the end. I asked on the noticeboard if it's okay to resume - could you answer? Aelfthrytha 03:05, 1 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, I was about ready to give up in disgust at not understanding what it was that was being asked for, but I've generally found that when the disgust level gets that high, it's better to shut down the computer and go putter around in the garden or for a run until my disgust meter goes down to an acceptable level, if you know what I mean. I'll get on it, but in the interim I've started clearing out the whole bank-stub category. That should take an hour or five. Aelfthrytha 03:17, 1 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edits - Alan Bond

edit

Can I confirm these edits are not from copyrighted sources nor am I a PR agency. I am just someone with an interest.

The information below is factual

Bond Holdings got its start in the 1950s when Alan Bond dropped out of high school.

In 1957, after a stint as an apprentice sign painter, he took out a loan, mostly from the wealthy father of his wife to be, to start his own property development business.

Within two years, Bond, at the age of 21, had become a millionaire.

In that year, 1959, Bond formed the Progress Development Organisation.

In 1969 Bond incorporated his various holdings as West Australia Land Holdings, Limited, with headquarters in Perth.

In 1974 Bond changed the name of his company to Bond Corporation Holdings.

In the following year, risky borrowing to finance acquisitions brought Bond to the brink of financial ruin. His first run with bankruptcy was averted only when the ANZ Bank allowed him sufficient time to restructure his debt, some $73 million.

In September 1990 Alan Bond resigned as chairman and director of Bond Corporation Holdings Ltd, along with two other directors, Tony Oates and Peter Mitchell, who had also resigned as senior executives.

Peter Lucas was appointed chairman.

Despite Alan Bond (Along with Oates Mitchell) no longer playing a further role in the company in the direct management sense., he was still a controlling interest in the Bond Corporation through his private company, Dallhold Investments.

Shortly afterwards, the Australian Federal Police claimed they had traced millions of dollars to offshore trusts and bank accounts in Jersey and Switzer-land.

Bond claimed brain damage and memory loss when examined in the Australian Federal Court about these offshore assets.

In 1997, Alan Bond was sentenced to four years jail after he pleaded guilty to defrauding Bell Resources Bell Group.[2] of $1.2 billion.

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions appealed that sentence and the West Australian Court of Appeal increased it to seven years.

But the sentence was reduced when the High Court ruled that the Commonwealth was unable to appeal on a sentence on a State law - that is it should have been lodged by the Western Australian Government, because Alan Bond had broken State law.

Bond Corp executive Peter Mitchell received four years' jail for making improper use of his position as a company officer. He voluntarily flew from his home in Colorado to face the charges.

Mitchell was released on parole after serving 16 months of his sentence.

In July 2005, after almost 10 years in two countries and numerous courtrooms Tony Oates also admitted his guilt, pleading guilty to three of the 15 charges facing him - accusations that he made improper use of his position as an officer of Bell Resources in order to gain an advantage for Bond Corporation to the tune of $500 million.

Alongside Bond and Mitchell, Oates had a big hand in all the group's major decisions including, the setting up of the "back-to-back" loans which used friendly boutique banks as middle-men to allow the cash-strapped Bond Corp to access assets.

The London based Money Centre, Alan Bond's first venture since his release from prison, soon followed its predecessors into liquidation.

The Money Centre was a UK based loan business modelled on Mr Bond's Australian payday loan company Cheque Exchange. Alan Bond had consistently claimed he's only a consultant of the company, not a director.

The business was originally chaired by his former stockbroker, Robert Quinn who helped pay his legal fees while he was bankrupt.

John Saunders is also on the board and the company's finances are managed by former Bond Corp company secretary, Graeme Baker.

As of June 2007 it was reported that Alan Bond, now London-based, is set to make up to £400m from the launch of an African oil venture, Madagascar Oil, but of course it is not without controversy.

The company, which owns huge oil-shale leases in Madagascar, is likely to be floated on the Toronto Stock Exchange next year.

This is in addition to the £60m from a diamond mine in Africa - but is locked in a bitter battle over the company that owns it which is the Gibraltar-based Lesotho Diamond Corporation of which Bond controls 48% of the company through offshore trusts.

It is reported he has fallen out with almost all the other shareholders included some of his close friends who bankrolled him when he came out of jail in 2000.

Several dissident shareholders in Lesotho Diamonds recently pledged their share in the company to Rob Still, the South African mining entrepreneur who runs Pangea Diamond Fields.

Among those to desert Bond are two fellow Australian expatriates, Lindsay Sanford and Greg Kennedy, who have been in to trouble with the law when they ran World Games which the Australian courts declared in 2004 to be an illegal pyramid scheme.

They left Australia before the ruling.

One of the few still supporting Bond is Robert Nelson, a Perth tax-scheme promoter who left Australia in 1983 after he was bankrupted by the Australian Taxation Office.

Up until 2005 Bond’s criminal record prevented him being a director of any Australian company.

He kept a low profile in London, claiming to be just a consultant to Lesotho Diamonds (on a fee of £150,000 a year).

It has been reported that Bonds shares are owned by an offshore trust, originally held in a Guernsey company called Miramas Services.

They were recently transferred to Ultimo Assets, whose domicile is unknown.

The shareholder register lists his agent as the Regent Trust Company in Geneva.

Vet med article assessments

edit

That's great if you want to start doing assessments. However, I don't know how to alter the template to allow it. Shouldn't be too hard though, just steal the wikicode form someone else's template. The categories can be found at the category tree at the bottom of the WP:VET page, and I just finished the article list, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Veterinary medicine/Articles. All of those are tagged with the project template, except for the last page under miscellaneous. Could you give me your opinion on whether all of those should be tagged, also? They mainly include veterinary drugs, schools and veterinarians. --Joelmills 14:37, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I changed the template to add all the articles to the Category:WikiProject Veterinary medicine articles. This would be useful to separate them out and make it easier to compile a project article list. The NA ranking now puts those articles in the Category:Non-article Veterinary medicine pages. It should work now. If it doesn't, let me know and I'll see what I can do. John Carter 00:06, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, I understand about the assessments (I think), but is Category:WikiProject Veterinary medicine articles supposed to contain all the articles tagged as being part of this wikiproject? Right now it just seem to hold the ones tagged as NA. I'm guessing that it is because all of the tagged articles would be in Category:Unassessed Veterinary medicine articles, but that only holds 78 articles, when I know at least several hundred are tagged, and nearly all of those are unassessed. It's probably just the servers or whatever that need to catch up, but I was just curious. I see you're busy now tagging the NAs, so I'll tag the miscellaneous articles, and that should pretty much finish up the tagging. What fun. --Joelmills 00:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

A random sampling of tagged articles show that they all have picked up Carter's changes, so I think it's just a lag in the something or other that is keeping the categories from being populated. I remember when we changed the stub types, it took a few hours for the categories to be populated. So let's give it a day and then check it. Just out of curiosity, are we rating importance too? Because that would necessitate another change to the template. Personally, I don't care if we do or don't, because having good articles on obscure topics is half the fun. --Joelmills 00:50, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

{{WikiProject Veterinary medicine}}

Let me get this clear before I edit anything. You're thinking there's a bug within {{WikiProject Veterinary medicine}} causing tagged articles to be categorised incorrectly? -- Longhair\talk 03:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll take a look and correct anything untoward that I find. -- Longhair\talk 04:02, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're right - every instance of tagging with the template feeds into Category:WikiProject Veterinary medicine articles. I'll see what changes I can make to avoid those tagged NA from landing there. -- Longhair\talk 04:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Have a fiddle, using {{User:Longhair/VMtest}} on a test article (in your own personal sandbox would be a good place to try this) to see how the changes to the new template behave. I've been testing the results at User:Longhair/VMtest/1test; feel free to test using that page if you like. I'll be back online a little later to respond further to this problem. Real work calls for now. Speak soon. -- Longhair\talk 04:49, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
It was actually kind of intentional that all the articles be placed individually in the Category:WikiProject Veterinary medicine articles. Many projects like to assemble an article list which can then be monitored for recent changes. By placing all the articles tagged with the banner in that category individually, all one has to do to assemble an article list is cut and paste the contents of that category. That's a lot easier than trying to assemble the list from disparate categories. However, if you do want to change that, let me know and I'll change it however you want. John Carter 13:46, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
A centralized list makes sense, but is Category:WikiProject Veterinary medicine articles supposed to contain all the tagged articles? Right now it's only showing about 110. My rough count from the article list I made that's organized by branch of medicine, Wikipedia:WikiProject Veterinary medicine/Articles, is about 450 tagged articles. Oddly, when I counted the "what links here" to the actual project template, I came up with about 500, including categories. However, as I mentioned above, I assume it's just server lag. --Joelmills 14:59, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Centralized discussion on centralized lists

edit

I copied the message I had just left you over to the project talk page, so hopefully we can get everyone on the same page. It looks like we are approaching this from three different directions, but we all have the same goal in mind: a list that is easy to access. If there are a few NA's in the mix, it probably won't hurt anything. The list I originally made is too complicated for a simple look at what needs to be assessed, but I think it's helpful for seeing what is out there for different branches of medicine, what species those articles cover and need to cover, and what articles are missing. So I suggest having the centralized list that Carter proposed as the main article list, and have my attempt at organization as a place for article requests and such. I'm also posting this to the project talk page. --Joelmills 15:18, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Honestly, I don't know what hell I'm doing, since I've never really worked extensively on a wikiproject. I appreciate all the suggestions you have made. What I don't understand is why it matters if the NA's are in the main article category (although I agree they don't need to be). If we're copying and pasting the category contents into an article list for assessment purposes, as Carter suggested, the NA's can be manually weeded out. --Joelmills 15:29, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

You might search on google, but I'm not sure what you'll find. I can tell you, that I took the picture of the rebel Supriata myself. It was in the summer of 1967, that I saw him in Indonesia when on a trip to land (I was a sailorman and worked with the engine of a transport-ship). Indonesia than was allready independant for over 10 years (oficially since 1949), and so he wasn't a rebel back than. He looked older han he was, around 55 years old, but you could see he lived trough tough life. He agreed with me taking a picture of him. Its not the only one; I believe, I might have some pictures of which I'm standing next to Supriata. Does that provide enough information for the moment. I am the number one specialist about him on this wikipedia, I suppose, although my knowledge of Indonesian history itself might be less great. The image itself is higly styled; I'm not sure, but maybe its oiginally in colour. Anyway, thanks for your interest, SatuSuro. -)-(-H- (|-|) -O-)-(- 13:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maybe we should work to create a series of featured lists rather than having these non-expandable stubby entries all over Wikipedia :) There is definitely a place for local newspapers due to their importance in Australia as a lower-tier news medium. Some newspapers are independently notable - I'd say Post Newspapers have earned that status, as has the Mt Gambier one whose sheer bias and weirdness often sees it appear in more mainstream publications as the subject of articles. Dutch Australians

edit

Any time. If Wikipedia can't manage to write a decent article on Dutch Australians, we may as well give up. I must admit I was a bit surprised a more substantial article on the topic similar to Italian Australians didn't exist already. -- Mattinbgn/ talk 14:04, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi SatuSuro, I placed the tag on the list section of the Dutch Australian article for reasons that I left on the talk page - Talk:Dutch Australian#Names in list. My point with placing the tag is that there is no evidence providing that, for instance, Jack van Tongeren, a man I would not want to be associated with, is actually of Dutch origin. He could quite possibly be German, Belgian, Afrikaner, Sri Lankan, Indonesian/Papuan, from the Netherlands Antilles and so on. The same applies to all the listed people. I am happy to leave the tag off, but really, unless there is a reference somewhere that they are Dutch-Australian, the person should be removed from the list. Cheers, Mattinbgn/ talk 03:36, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Is that right? It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Anyway, we will need to keep an eye on the list and make sure it doesn't get out of hand. Cheers, Mattinbgn/ talk 07:56, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, you're quick. Thanks for the response. Yes, I felt that more than one ref would be needed (particularly as I got it from the Daily Telegraph) so I decided to look if he was in the ADB which he is. I've added that too. Is this sudden interest in the article related to the Gideon Haigh article published this month and the discussion about it. Did you hear Haigh interviewed this am on ABC Radio National Bookshow this am. Nevil Shute was my favourite novelist in my teens. While my friends were swooning to Georgette Heyer's historical regency romances, I preferred the real stuff - Jane Austen's regency and Nevil Shute's mid twenieth century. I read every one of his books over the years and saw On the beach, A town like Alice, No highway. Anyhow, I will do a little more this am but at this time will leave that Ayn Rand stuff alone - without citation it does look a bit to me like original research. Haigh though does say that he was a conservative, did support private enterprise (neither of these point specifically to Rand) and perhaps more close to the Ayn Rand stuff was that Haigh says he was more of a meritocrat than a democrat. Images needed

as i slowly trawl the nsw station stubs and others it is expected that each needs a photo? if so I will add it to the menagerie SatuSuro 13:09, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

There's a page under Wikiproject Sydney (Wikipedia:WikiProject Sydney/Railway stations/Photos) which has a list of stations in the CityRail network and whether they have a photo or not. I figured that adding the imagesneeded parameter would mean another place to promote the request for pictures. Harryboyles 13:24, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it really matters what they're classified as - they're half-list, and half-article. In terms of referencing, I think Psephos should be sufficient - it may be Adam's site, but it's pretty widely respected, and one of the leading references in the country for this sort of information. (For the record, I'm also working on adding similar information for the NSW Parliament, and I've partially completed an earlier project to do it for the NT Parliament). Australian women writers

edit

SatuSuro - thanks for your note. I have not heard of the book by Debra Adelaide but that is not unusual. I plan to go to the library at the weekend. This exercise is expanding my appreciation of women writers, and the list of books I haven't read yet is just getting longer. Stellar 14:35, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, SatuSuro, I have the Debra Adelaide book. Bought it back in 1989 and have been using it. I have just gone through it once - checking the names that I have familiarity with - not evey single name - and used it to add the category to 30-40 names. I've also used it to update a few articles and will do some more. I've cited it in several articles to date. Thanks though for referring us to it ... because it's better to be told about something you know every now and then rather than miss out on things you don't know. I also have a wonderful book by her called 'A bright and fiery troop' about Aussie women writers of the nineteenth century. I used it to do a bit of upgrading work on the Ada Cambridge article...and will gradually over coming months use it to do more. I was wondering about creating stubs for more writers from the Adelaide biblio. Is that an OK think to do? I sort of prefer articles to stubs but? Sterry2607 01:08, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised too. I don't right now have all the references I might want, but she is listed in the Calendar of saints (Anglican Church of Australia) for April 8. I don't have a direct reference to add content to the article yet indicating that, though. John Carter 14:23, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I understand the points about unreliability completely. We in the project though are, in the interests of being as NPOV as possible, including all individuals who are commemorated in any of the major liturgical calendars as within the scope of the project. The scope of the project is now basically to help improve all articles related to individuals mentioned in any of the various liturgical calendars. I do want to make it clear though that, speaking for myself, we in the project have no particular intention of trying to try to "push" content related to our subject in any of the articles, although we will try to include the relevant content provided it doesn't take up disproportionate space in the article, and try to feature (or at least reference) as many articles as possible on the Portal:Saints. The concept of "sainthood", whether the specific word is used or not, is used by the Anglicans, Lutherans, Orthodox, Catholics, and even a few other churches, like the old Arian church, and in the interests of being NPOV we want to include them all. In an article like this, though, I think about all we would intend to do is improve the quality of the biographical part where we have sources, mention the commemoration in the calendar, and add her name to whichever lists are relevant. John Carter 14:38, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
For the curious please see further comments at the talk page of the above user - SatuSuro 03:53, 30 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the lack of tagging and assessment of Christianity related articles, I know. As soon as I get done with the periodic reassessment of the Saints project, I'm going to try to ensure that all the articles related to Christianity get tagged by at least one project, hopefully the most relevant one, so that there's a greater likelihood that they will be attended to by someone. "Mary Tudor anger?"

edit

I thought the tone of the comments was funny - a number of "in jokes" concerning the subject of the project. The comments were not intended to be anything other than humor and were not intended to be up forever. What is more, the page doesn't have to stay that way. I just grouped similar posts together and I made obvious headings for potential posts. That said, have at it - make it look how ever you like it. Somebody complained and I tried to fix it, sue me if I don't get a barnstar.

{{Project Catholicism}}

edit

I'm looking at it now :) -- Longhair\talk 05:09, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

That particular project doesn't have a category parameter enabled. The parameter is appearing as a coloured tag in the template due to {{Category-Class}} which confuses the matter a little. I've seen some projects use a cat=yes paramter before. I'll go look for one and see if we can enable it for this and our own WP:AUS. -- Longhair\talk 05:14, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
WP:CHINA uses it. It's not a major blunder and probably something that could easily be enabled anyway. -- Longhair\talk 05:24, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Use NA for now. I'm fiddling about to see if I can get a cat parameter working for both projects. -- Longhair\talk 05:59, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
The class=cat parameter for WP:AUS works now. See Category talk:Australia. I'll see if I can do the same for the Catholicism WP. -- Longhair\talk 06:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

pipe

edit

I hear them every day, the bairns at the local conflate those assemblages to a maximum of three tunes. It is easy to become misty eyed when I remember how they are made. The snark hunt ending with an old blanket being bound around the fierce creature; the cheers of celebration, the blooding of the dogs, and then we'd batter the poor devil with an old chair. The subsequent 'bag' was good for 70s or 29 weddings, traditional ways being the best method of producing a pipe. But I digress ...

I've said as much as I'm going to on the fictional airports of western australia - elsewhere. Brautigan ..! Trout fishing in america shorty would have something to say - linguine and porchetta or other attempts to swear in italia, probably. I'm surprised that such a maverick is not more celebrated, I suppose it is of greater cultural value to the same mob he [theoretically] defeated in Townsville harbour, l'americainski! Larrikin is the alleged local flavour, I suppose I might find a ref in an aus-cultrl art: betwixt the riots and appropriation of meat and pastry dishes. Dunno. One is a drainage system, the other is a... what? Nothing more than a plateau? It's hard to say, isn't it? Sometimes a geologist will say "it's a craton", a geographer will say "it's a plateau", and a hydrologist will say "it's a drainage division". Oftentimes they can't even decide between themselves whether they are talking about precisely the same landform, so how are we to know? Hesperian 07:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bookbot seems cool - a lot of e-books available there. Yeah do you have some podcasts you could recommend? I don't have a mac - macs are usable with VoiceOver but it is still clunky compared to the Windows screen readers. I use podcasts with Winamp though. I like the books produced by the ABC - they are high-quality and people put a lot of emotion into the narration unlike some talking books. Are you going to the Wikipedia Perth meetup this August? Bugger me. Ahhh, wasnt tryna understand what they were saying, just tryna get my point across as to what i think should happen. But very good advice from a person who very much should be an administrator. Im trying to concentrate on getting WP:WA unassessed articles, assessed. Its most rewarding to know that after all ive taken from WP:WA, i can finally give something back.

On a completely unrelated matter: On my assessment run i am finding alot of Perth articles in the unassessed WA category, which is quite wierd. My first thought is that all Perth articles are automatically placed in WP:WA aswell? Personally, i cant wait until the 3 months are over and i can go and do a few crazy things (like put this up for FAR. stuff the croweaters =P). Anywho, that was my moment of crazyness. Best Wishes. Monitoring pages

edit

OK, just figured out what you were talking about. I don't actually use these pages much for monitoring, but add the new articles the bot picks up as they come in, so that they stay listed somewhere when removed from the archive there. It is very time-consuming to add older articles. I suppose a good place to start would be copy over all the lists from the topics list, but it would take forever to put them in the right place and format them (with the talk page), so I'm not going to do it anytime soon. Thanks for correcting the spelling mistakes and categories, obviously I haven't read them very carefully myself. As for copy-editing non-native-speaker articles, you can just use the {{copyedit}} template and hope someone finds it. I wonder if there would be a way to find articles needing copy-editing related to your own interests? (e.g. ones that are in a cat related to Indonesia) Rigadoun (talk) 16:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I know this is not the place but for some reason your talk page is protected, so I can't leave you a message there. Regarding the new page you made, and I tagged for speedy deletion; this is what it looked like when I saw it: [11] Most vanity pages look something like this when created as new pages, and as you can appreciate, with little content, style formatting or sources (and a red-linked category) it looked like a non-notable person. There are so many new pages - I tag a lot and sooner or later there is bound to be a mistake - that is what hang on it for, after all. I appreciate that some people prefer to create small and work up - not a policy I like, incidentally, but that is your choice - after all, if you write the whole article before saving it, it is obvious what the notability is (and would negate any such problems as the one that occurred) - plus I see no benefits of saving after every small addition if you are writing lots.

One thing I do not like or appreciate is the hostility towards people using anonymous IP addresses - this is why wikipedia works, and why it is so big, and why it is so good. I dislike the snobbery shown towards good IP editors, and I have been tagged as a vandal (wrongly) twice before, due to named-users making mistakes. The rights of people to edit as IPs is important - and don't assume they are necessarily unfamiliar with wikipedia. I am helping just as you are. 195.137.30.238 16:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks SatuSuro. Seems, really, like the jury is out on the Infoboxes (to some degree) so we'll probably just keep using them as we have been until someone yells at us. I think they provide a useful encapsulation of STUFF. I finally found a Funeral Director's Notice for Glenda Adams' death - doesn't mention her career though. I liked her Dancing on coral and Hottest night of the century. She was too young to die. Wonder if it was cancer? I've only read "Love child" of Bedford's. Its been done on Aquinas. My rationale for it is that people who are notable to the school, eg. they were involved in the foundation (eg. Bishop Gibney to AC), staff (eg. David Gault to AC), or in any way to help/aid the school. (eg. Paul Keaney to AC). I also think that it would just be a waste of space to create a cat: "Staff at Aquinas College, Perth". Hence why they are in there, i have been convinced of the merits of not having Alumni in the schools cat, but not staff. Staff have a strong connection to the college, alumni generally dont. Hi SatuSuro, Sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet. As you saw, I was looking through the categories this morning. I usually do stuff from work during the day here, but I recently got internet access at home so I'll probably be doing more in the evenings too. Aw shucks, mate. Can't we be civil?

edit

Shoot, SatoSuro, our first meeting was nice enough--you noted that I should take more care with a citation (in all caps). Fair enough, though I was still in the middle of editing that. And your point about the Anti-Communist Indonesians category was well taken (I had no clue). But then, on the next interaction, you lay this on me:

It is one thing to put down wikipedia aspirations for NPOV - but if you are indeed an academic - then I can think of academic supervisors that I have had in my time that would return some of your current attempts at papers/ - ie wikipedia edits on articles with a re-write demand

Damn, bro, that's cold blooded, as we used to say in the 70s. I think you should be nice to the newbies and assume good faith: two orthodox WP practices.

If you read my comments about NPOV carefully: it's an intellectual caveat, not an abandonment of the NPOV goal. "Objectivity" can simultaneously be a worthy goal and conceal a positivist, masculinist, White supremacist, capitalist perspective (to name a few). I.e. plenty of people with incredibly strong POVs hide behind the normative claim of neutrality. On WP articles about Indonesia, the clandestine/inadvertent POV is sometimes Aussie-centric, masculine, and WorldBank-ish. So, for example, structural adjustment gets a big smiley endorsement on Indonesia, yet this passes for NPOV. Then I'm biased for pointing out the POV? C'mon. I'm very happy to take criticism about style, method, and transgression of WP policies--I'm a newb, after all--but I'd appreciate it if there was a bit more good faith and friendly language, okay? --Dylanfly 17:35, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Look, mate, I'm sure you're a nice enough fellow, but insulting my scholarship is a pretty mediocre way to say Hi-and-Howdy. I'm just asking you to make nice and not throw sand, okay? I've been on Wikipedia since mid-June (I think), and I'm a professor. I'm trained in critical theory, marxism, feminism, and the like. For those of the positivist mindset, that stuff can be tough to digest. There can be an oil and water reaction going both ways. For my part, I love science too; but my intellectual orientation, methodology, and politics give me cause to question those who claim "objectivity." When I think of top Indonesianists, I think of Benedict Anderson, Ariel Heryanto, Vedi Hadiz, Anne Stoler, James T. Siegel. Do those names register? To make a long story short, that's where I'm coming from. Many of the most important Indonesia articles betray a pro-Washington consensus, pro-neoliberal development perspective. Add to that a fetish for the "fact," the trivial, and the superficial. Reminds me of high school geography in the USA. In sum, biased as heck, but masked as "non-political" and "neutral." I'm asking you, again, to try and see me as a friendly ally; a helpful, knowledgeable, and usually cheerful contributor who can contribute to the democratic production of knowledge that we call WP. So let me buy you a virtual beer, SatuSuro. We'll shake virtual hands, trade smiles, and edit together happily ever after. Sound good? --Dylanfly 01:45, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Dear Satu, Sorry things haven't worked out for now. Maybe at some point in the future you'll let me buy you that virtual bir. In the meantime, happy editing. --Dylanfly 12:01, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
