Homesteads

edit

I put together a list of (gazetted) homesteads in Western Australia last night. There are 5000 of them! I'll post it to User:Snottygobble/Drafts/List of homesteads in Western Australia tonight. Is it encyclopaedic?

I'm not inclined to red-link all the names, as the vast majority are completely non-notable and won't ever merit articles. I'll leave them unlinked and we can manually link the worthy ones e.g. Cattle Chosen, Glengarry (Western Australia), Kirkalocka Station, etc.

Snottygobble 00:53, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've generated it, but I haven't posted it to Wikipedia yet. As I said above, I'll post it tonight. That means some time in the next hour or so. Snottygobble 11:16, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

West Coast railways

edit

Hi. I think I've seen in museum displays that the North Mount Lyell Railway terminus was at Linda, but you have written several articles that say it was at Gormanston, which the museums say was a Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company town, the rival before the merger. Do your reference books support this? Was the North Mt Lyell railway extended to Gormanston before being closed? Incidentally, the museums (especially Zeehan) suggest that North Mount Lyell had the good ore, but Mount Lyell had the competent management. I don't think I've collected any brochures or books to cite though, just my memory of what I've read. --Scott Davis Talk 07:48, 5 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good idea - thanks

edit
good idea, I'm off the air for two days now anyway
  • DAY 1 - Spring the (Hic!) Valley, but I'm being paid to drive so I'm stuck on water and dry biscuits
  • Day 2 - Bathurst, as long as the drinks stay cold and the TV stays on I could have the whole chorus of Moulin rouge dancing in the lounge I wouldnt notice(well maybe during an add break). Gnangarra 14:18, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

History of Western Australian railways

edit

I really like this article History of rail transport in Ireland and the animated gif file which shows the disappearing railway network. You're the railway expert here. How much info do we have and could we do something similar? (I saw a map in an old Early Days a while back showing the southwest timber milling network and it was enormous). -- I@n 09:43, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I happened to see an interview last night on the ABC collectors show about someone (and his fellows) who collects train timetables. These often contained extensive info and maps. I will track down details if you think it will be useful. As I have said elsewhere, trams coud be included somewhere. As with LA, they were removed to make way for Highway/Freeway infrastructure with some protest. --Fred.e 23:30, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are a serious of magnificent maps of the timber milling network in the back of Rails Through the Bush. Snottygobble 01:34, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes. You can't photocopy it or trace it. But you can re-express the information it contains on your own map. i.e. you provide the same information, but you make your own choices about composure, captioning, legend, colour scheme, etc. You don't even have to be willfully different; e.g. you can still use the standard crossed line to indicate a rail line. Snottygobble 02:01, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Found transcripts about trams from ABC RN, guessing that is them. Looks interesting. Guess I had better start a stub for that too. I believe the passenger network (train) ovelapped with the milling one but I will gather more concrete info. --Fred.e 02:07, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Overthrow of Sukarno

edit

Hello there. To be honest, getting this article to GA is not a priority for me right now, i was merely miffed it lost GA status on an apparent misinterpretation of the criteria. Thanks for your message, how about putting any supporting comments on the GA review page?? PS, who is Daniel that you refer to? regards --Merbabu 09:00, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

So do you know the annual suharto era national tv movie G30SPKI off by heart as well? SatuSuro 09:07, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
lol - i saw 15mins and got the idea. ;-) It was kinda scary for the school kids, but i guess that was the intention to show how nasty those communists were and that Indonesia needed the valliant saviour Soeharto. It was 1997 and I living in a kos with ITB students, and they were all laughing at it. Telling really. --Merbabu 09:14, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
PS, actually, when i first got interested in Indonesia, that era fascinated me - it was actually pretty scary, wells with generals thrown down them, rampages in Java and Bali. I should look into it again, but once we get at least GA for Indonesia. Cambodia and Bangladesh have FA so there is no reason why Indonesia shouldn't. It's fairly unstable at the moment, but it think it is for the best. It is a different article compared to a month ago. --Merbabu 09:17, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thats why I left an appology on the bienews talk page, as the rewording chnaged the source of the name for the other cities.

Too much info on the folk music for what should be a summary, unless the guy rates an article most of that should be in Music of Perth article.

Re: Darwin vandal

edit

If you're talking about User:789suj98e7fh8sfdf98udfu8dfu9sdufdsf8377dh8nsdsncskj, he's been blocked due to vandalism and inappropriate username. There is a policy on usernames, located at WP:USERNAME. Normally, when the person in question vandalizes, it's obviously best to revert/undo their edits. In this case, a username like that is immediately eligible for blocking due to the username policy. You may report such users to WP:AIV; that page is mostly for vandalism, but I've seen people use it to report username violations too. I hope this helps somewhat. Suharto

edit

Don't know much - anymore. I used to know quite a bit 10 years ago, but one forgets. I don't know that article well either. Wasn't he busted for some scandal with sugar while was a commander of the Salatiga post of ABRI? Then he was shipped off to the ABRI academy in Bandung for punishment or "summat". I have a good book on him written in the 70s - i read it 10 years ago but still have it. I'll add it to the reading list now Btw, what is HBIX? --Merbabu 12:01, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re (Suharto) in Yk (ie Yogya) we had rumours something like that but diff place. HBIX is Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono the ninth as is PBX Sri Susuhunan Paku Buwono the tenth SatuSuro 12:11, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Boans

I can remember them in the old building mid 80's I was selling the daily news on cnr murray and barrack(84-85) Carillion opened 83-84, Cinema City opened 79-80, but by time I started driving tour coaches in 1989 it was gone and murray st was closed around then. Also lost the No.3 carpark as well at that time. The Padbury building, I dont know which may suggest it was well in decline by then if not gone, (I remember the old building for 78's on hay street but nothing about them before that) was it on the opposite side of forrest place next to the post office? Gnangarra 12:21, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Weren't the Padbury Bldgs in Forrest Place opposite the post office? There was a milk bar on the corner of Murray St (about where the escalators are now) called JD's. Memories! -- Moondyne 12:43, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikiproject Indonesia Newsletter

edit
WikiProject Indonesia has grown incredibly! Two months ago, when the project was created, there were only two members, but now, we have got over 20 members, and hopefully it will keep increasing. Because of this large number, now WikiProject Indonesia has it's own newsletter, which will be delivered every week on Monday morning, around 22:00 (UTC). If you have any idea and suggestions, please do not hesitate to contribute to the next newsletters. We also need to find a better banner for the newsletter, so just post it on project's talk page. With your help, we can reach the even the impossible goal!
"Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita runtuh"
What's new?
Several ways to increase the interactions between editors have been proposed. For now, the best solution would be the IRC Channel just for WikiProject Indonesia. Please go to #wikipedia-id if you have had experiences with IRC Channels. Or read the instructions at Wikipedia:IRC.

Three new barnstar design have been proposed! If you find a great editor with excellent contributions to Indonesia-related articles, give him/her a barnstar, or maybe two or three! See the barnstars at Wikiproject Indonesia Barnstars.

Articles improvements
The previous two weeks were maybe the best and tiring week for some of us. On the good side, we have got a new Good Article, which is Toraja. Congratulations for all editors who have involved in the expansion. Yet we have failed to get two Good Article status, which are Tourism in Indonesia and Indonesia. However with the spirit of 1945 we will always accomplish many things!

Starting this week (October 17), the collaboration durations have been extended, so now we can collaborate to improve a particular article for two weeks straight. Please leave any recommendations or suggestions on the collaboration talk page.

Many thanks to MartinBotII, a state-of-the-art Martinp23's bot for delivering the newsletter
