Sarahbishopv 03:58, 11 April 2007 (UTC)== Hurricane Gloria == Hello. While looking at the edits you made at Hurricane Gloria, I tried to locate a copy of the reference you used for those edits, but I couldn't find it. Is it a book? Who published it, if that's the case? Is there a link, if it is an online resource? I was unable to find any entries for "New England Hurricanes 1636-1996: A Technical Paper" in the Library of Congress's database, so I temporarily removed the edit while I could find it. Mind telling me how I can verify the accuracy of those numbers? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 01:58, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Almost all of the information on the original page of Hurricane Gloria is incorrect concerning Rhode Island and Massachusetts. All the information I have sited was from combing all the newspaper, media,NHS preliminary report reports. Much valuable information is contained in the New Bedford (Massachusetts) Standard Times and the Providence (Rhode Island) Journal. Both newspapers ran the story for several days. I also have copies of all the Boston newspapers for the same period of time. Not included in my edit were wind reports of 90 mph in Falmouth,88 mph Marthas Vineyard Airport, and a gust of 110 mph at the Coast Guard Station in Chatham. All of these reports are from Massachusetts and further east of the area I was writing about. Both the Prov. Journal and the New Bedford Standard report on roofs being blown off in their communities. A press photograph from the south coast of Rhode Island dhows a hotel rooh ripped from a high rise hotel and landing on the houses behind the hotel near a beach community in South County Rhode Island. There were long term power outages that lasted five days in coastal areas of southeast Rhode Island and southwest coastal Massachusetts. (I was there and with that storm I began collecting and reporting wind data for the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton,Mass.)

My siting of New England Hurricanes 1635-1996: a Technical Paper was written by me,first as a thesis and later privately published for a few meterologists (who have actually used it in their writings and research). I am the only person who has completely researched all New England hurricanes and have a sited bibliography to back up all my information, each storm cross-referenced with at least three separate official sources.

Though this book is about to be publicly printed in the future,I am not promoting it but am sharing correct, detailed and updated information. This has been my life's work.

Official Wind gusts: New London,Conn.112mph;Warwick,Rhode Island (hourly observation at Airport),east across and north of Narragansett Bay in Massachusetts 120 mph gusts were reported at the State Police Barracks in Rehobeth,Massachusetts,90mph+ US Army Corps Engineers Hurricane Barrier,New Bedford,Massachusetts,104mph Padanaram Bridge/Harbor,South Dartmouth,Massachusetts. A 120 mph reading on a radio antennae was recorded in Salem,Massachusetts north of Boston and is in the NHC preliminary report as well.

The Middleborough Gazzette extensively covered the heavy tree/forest and residential damage inland in southeast Massachusetts in the town of Lakeville where many houses were seriously damaged by falling trees especially in the Clars Point lake community on Long Pond. Ten miles south of that location peach and apple orchards were destroyed in Achusnet and several tenaments in the coastal city of New Bedford had their roofs ripped off.

It is beyond me and my associates how Wiki could have an article that was so lacking in the actual facts concerning this hurricane. Gloria was a category 1 storm and there were widespread effects of the hurricane in Rhode Island and eastern and southeaastern Massachusetts. No matter the category, a hurricane is a hurricane. Some of the original article seemed to reflect the minimixation of the storm's effects that were widespread in the press outside of New England for several days after the storm. Mostly, lack of sources, and the article reflecting the sources themselves. I'd be interested in reading that, as it would help us out considerably in other articles, providing a verifiable, citable source, and it would give you proper attribution for the content. INCORRECT ARTICLE:

The original copy of this article needed correction. All the information about New England impacts in Rhode Island and Massachusetts was incorrect.Where the article states: "Gloria did not pass close enough to Rhode Island and Massachusetts to cause significant damage" is incorrect. The article goes on to correctly tally dmagae in Maine....obviously the storm went through Massachusetts to reach Maine.Gloria's afore-mentioned lop-sided windfield was exaggerated in the eastern sector which is the very sector which tore across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts (especially the area just west and north of Buzzards Bay). Many of the numerous wind reports of hurricane force winds came from the southeastern New England area.Long term power failures in eastern and southeastern Massachusetts kept much information from making a true picture of what had happened a particular problem especially noted after hurricane Bob (1991) in the same vicinity when early reports of moderate damage later gave way to reports and severe damage. Gloria was experienced as a full category one hurricane in all of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.

This article SHOULD read: There was some significant wind damage in Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts to roofs, some of which blew off (South Kingston,Rhode Island and New Bedford,Massachusetts) and many trees were downed. Some coastal towns were without power up to five days (Westport,Massachusetts). Inland areas saw a considerable amount of vegetation damage, especially the Worcester,Massachusetts area.

Winds gusted to 112mph at New London,Connecticut,104mph at Padanaram,Massachusetts, and over 90mph at New Bedford,Massachusetts.Estimated gusts around 100 mph occured in the Worcester,Massachusetts location. Sarahbishopv 02:13, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
