Hey, I realized that my edit summary was super short and I should have contacted you. I have been traveling. And yes, I removed my "Email this user" option upon my ending of working at the Wikimedia Foundation, and due to recent attacks I have suffered publicly due to my involvement in the women's movement of Wikipedia. Anyway, sorry for my removal, but, I already mentioned it in the "other information" section. Perhaps, if you wish to see it in the "Acquistion" section it can be rephrased to explain why the sculptor and architect were chosen, however, I don't have any sources, yet, stating that involvement with the Indianapolis sculpture was the reason he was chosen to assist with the Delphi piece. I removed it because I didn't think it was necessary to post it in two places in the somewhat short article, and that it wasn't necessary a part of the "acquisition" section. No edit war, I have boundless respect for you and you editing, and your decision and execution of it were blameless,and I am sorry to hear about the negative fallout from you editing. Once again I feel a need to apologize fr my gender. Here is the email that I was going to send you:

Dear Sarah: You were absolutely right in undoing my edit at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (Delphi, Indiana), however not mostly for the reason that you might believe, although your reasoning was right on. The real reason for doing it (and I have faith that you will look into this claim further) is that neither Schwarz nor Schmitz had anything to do with that monument. On wikipedia we (or at least ”I”) have an ongoing problem with good sources that are just wrong. In this case it was the National Register form for the Carroll County Courthouse. I started thinking about it and realized that if the 1882 date was correct then Schwarz was only 16 years old and if the 1888 date, the one usually used, was right he would have been 22. Why would Americans go to Austria or Germany for a 22 year old sculptor? I am currently NOT living at home in Dixon NM surrounded by my library, I am in Sun City AZ living with my 91 year old mother. However I do have access to the “Guide to Architectural Sculpture in America”, an online wiki started by Walt Lockley (another wikipedia editor) and I created many years ago. So I looked up the Indianapolis Monument and we had both Schmitz and Schwarz coming to America basically a decade after the Delphi monument. So I called my wife in Dixon, asked her to find my sculpture of Indiana book, (which I got from author Glory-Grief, with a nice inscription) and she looked it up and . . . . …. sure enough, Glory Grief says that the Delphi monument was often erroneously attributed to Schwarz. That work, I believe, does NOT show up as being by Schwarz on the SIRIS inventory, in fact everything there is dated after the S&S monument in Indianapolis. So mull all this over and do what you think is best. Life is supposed to be interesting. Einar aka carptrash

Hi Sarah,

I have signed up to Wikipedia under the username DrPacella, and I have made a new article about Dr. Pacella, but I am not Dr. Pacella. I simply signed up to wikipedia to make a page about him. In your comments you said it was discouraged to make a page about yourself, which I totally understand. He is not making one for himself, I am making one for him. Is this acceptable? Thanks!

Hi there. We actually discourage people writing Wikipedia articles for people they know - because of conflict of interest. If you can state on your user page (just click "User Page" after you click your username on the top) and express that you are not him and you are writing an article for him, that would be helpful and a declaration of you admitting you are working for him. I picked up an "adminhelp" to do a history merge to repair the cut-and-paste move the article author did to put this into mainspace. I wasn't sure where to leave the merged article but decided that, since it hadn't been formally reviewed and you had asked for comment, it would be best put back in AfC.As far as I can see, the author never actually submitted it, but since s/he clearly regarded it as ready, I have added the "submit" template. Hi there, I was able to do this - but I can't do the redirect to the biography because that village is also called Beniabid. And we rarely do redirects based on surnames unless that was their main name or nickname, and I don't see an evidence of that in his biography that he is primarily called by his last name. Thank you for reviewing my Regenesys business school article. We have been referenced by other articles and increasingly got requests for our students to provide a page on Wikipedia as our links point nowhere. Hi Sarah, Thanks for the note, I had just forgotten to log in. Lazy me... I am hoping the page will now be accepted. An editor called green cardamom claimed it was refused in the Netherlands Wikipedia for not being notable. This is nonsenss though. They never went on making the page. But their frontman has a Dutch Wikipedia page. I added that to tackle cardamoms remark. Also, the band just got nominated for the 13th Independent Music Awards in the USA for best Indie/Alternative rock album. Notable, I would say. Anyway, thanks again.

Need some help

Hello Sarah, my name is Jim Carter. Actually I need some help. I am a participant of WP:ORPHAN. I have noticed day by day the project is becoming inactive. The backlog of orphan articles reached sky high of more than 100,000 articles, but the members of this project has no interest to de-orphan them. Most of the members are now established and hence they are not cooperating with that project, which resulted a huge backlog which is impossible for few editors to eliminate. So to eliminate the huge backlog since 2008, I'm trying to re-started the backlog drive system (similar to AfC backlog drive). We will notify them to re-join the backlog drive. we have to send this {{WPORPHANdrive}} invitation message). The list of active members to receive the backlog drive notification can be found here. But it is not possible for me to notify them on there talkpages (More than 40 members in the list). So, I was wondering if you can help me in this matter. I have seen that you are one of the member who have sysop rights here. So, can you grant me the mass message sender right for atleast few days. I need to send the same message to multiple users. You can also do this since you are having admin rights. So, please help me to save this Wikiproject which might become inactive if this continues. I have already discussed with some other non-participant users (MelanieN, Stfg, Anna Frodesiak and some others). Most of them told me to contact you since you are a member of this project and you hold admin rights. So, I need your help. Please let me know if can do this. Thank you. Sarah, excellent no, you were way more polite than I would have been. User:Jim Cartar is a leader and part of the solution, but this is a pseudo-problem, a symptom. the problem is: we have people who will tell others what to do, but who will not actually do it themselves. when you have a backlog, such as BLP, AfC, or tags, this is a sign of a broken process. a process without a stable team and method for quality improvement. asking sarah to fix orphans is like asking user:Brian Josephson to fix typos. the subject matter experts might be more productive writing good articles, (if we would let them). might want to invite all those who tag spam to remove some tags as well. some wikilove on their talk pages would do nicely. you could write a bot for orphan removal: i.e. search for article term; insert brackets; remove tag. count me out of tag removal, i've done my last backlog drive. I'm trying my best to improve projects that are in the line to become inactive. Bots are not the correct answer. Why? Because they are much prone to face technical disasters than us. I have thought about creating a bot earlier, even I asked Bgwhite for help but I stopped because it is not the correct way. I know we have thousands of people, they tag orphan but they are not bothered to remove them by adding some link. I'm not a leader of this process but just a simple participant who is trying to help. Anyway, if you are interested to join the backlog then please go here and add your name. Now, we are not here for any debate, we have to take this matter to a conclusion. I know it is a broken process but I along with some others (like @Technical 13:) are trying our best to restore it to normal. And for that we need experienced ones like you and Sarah. So, as you asked for invitation I would like to invite you first. And I'm not asking Sarah to de-orphan but I want her opinion to start a backlog system since she was a participant of our project. oh, you're a thought leader; project leader whether you admit it or not. i kinda have my own agenda and work process, and tags are not a part of that. i kinda ask myself, if we clean up others' messes, are we enablers? or is it part of a learning process? where are the tag spammers asked to learn? do we teach the "teahouse method" of quality improvement? it's not rocket science. i don't see it. Hi, the biggest issue with the article is that it relies primarily on "primary sources" which are sources either written by Berman, or affiliated with her (The Doctors) or IMDB, which is an unreliable source because anyone can edit it (like Wikipedia). So, ideally, the citations used would be completely replaced with reliable secondary sources - press coverage, journal articles, things like that - written about her. The reason that is is because anyone can say anything about themselves, and if there isn't a way to verify it, then people might not believe it - or believe it and it's wrong (i.e. slander or whatever). Also, anything that is cited with an unreliable source can be removed from the article with no questions asked. So it's best to do it yourself before someone else does. :) Happy editing! The title "Sara Shahmohammadi" is still salted, but a user has recreated the article at the title Sara shahmohammadi. Could you check to see if the newly created article meets WP:CSD#G4? slow down with AFDs!

Hi SarahStierch -- I came across two of your recent AFDs which I didn't think were good or useful nominations, and then reviewing your contributions I see that you have made a lot of them, some just 6 minutes apart on wildly different areas. Seems like you were ranging far and wide, and nominating for deletion anything where you had some doubt. I see you withdrew one of your school nominations. Several are like Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mona Modern Hr.Sec.School where you comment that you have some doubt, call for others to fix it up. That one and others seem notable to me, and it seems to me that you are nominating too fast. If you are just practicing at AFD nominations, I think you should wait now and see how this batch of 20 or so(?) turns out, before nominating more. Hope you don't mind this comment. Thanks Don. I'm not practicing, I have been doing AfD's for about six years. I'm helping to clean out a very old (2006) and large (110,000+) backlog of orphaned articles, many that walk the line, or fail notability. That's why I bring it to the community. Whew, okay, thank you for understanding my comments in spirit intended. I have myself mostly dealt with AFDs when they came up on articles that i had contributed to, over many years. But recently I have been actively following the new AFDs generally, where there also is backlog and work. One general issue I have is with "fake AFDs" where a nominator doesn't believe an article should be deleted, but is just putting it out there for some other reason; I think those waste the community's attention and add to the AFD backlog. I don't think that's what you've done, but maybe your polite wording expressing doubt rather than being more strongly judgmental is oddly rubbing me slightly the wrong way, as if you don't have enough skin in it (not sure if i am using that expression properly). I find that hard to understand: Google Books search for '"cosmic space" separable' gives me 194 hits, including, for example, Encyclopedia of General Topology, and I have disputed the PROD accordingly. Hello Sarah,

I'm very new here so if this is the wrong place to chat about stuff, please accept my apologies. I disagree that you should be removed. I signed up for Wiki three years ago but only wrote my debut article last night. I came in response to an article on the BBC that said only 9% of Wikipedia editors are women and there's a huge lack of diverse points-of-view. You were one of the few visible women here. I read your Wiki article apparently just prior to deletion.

I checked out who you are and what you do online. I planned to check out the teahouse. I think deleting your profile is a mistake.

My debut article is about [my uncle]. I originally tried to [add him in 2012], but there were too many obstacles to communicate with Wiki for a non-techie like me. It's only because [[1]] and I met as musicians, started dating and eventually became partners that I was finally able with add an article at all.

The original draft I wrote contained just enough for Ritchie to grasp the fact that my 'Uncle Charles' was actually someone that should be remembered. I think my focus will be on the under-represented musicians and others who were historically sidelined in the segregated South. I've come to Wikipedia to add music, art, social media and other things that interest me. I was put off by the arrogance and lack of clarity on the issue of 'notability'. I didn't like the level of difficulty to do anything at all on this site... and silly arguements. Ritchie said my struggles creating my first article opened his eyes to the difficulties of engaging with Wikipedia. It was like inviting a physically disabled person into your home and realising for the first time, that the threshold at the front door is too high...the bathroom wall needs handles installed...the stairs are impossible so it's necessary to rearrange the downstairs rooms etc...

WikiProject African diaspora

Hi Sarah,

I noticed you were an active participant in the WikiProject African diaspora, so I wanted to get your opinion on something.

This project does great work. Just today, I added new information to the article North American Black Historical Museum, which is rightfully part of this project.

My concern is whether the project needs to list some "criteria for inclusion". On this project's welcome page, the first line states that the project "aims to improve all articles related to the cultural contributions of people of African descent all over the world". And there are many!

However, just a few days ago I noticed that Rodney King, "an African-American construction worker and serial criminal", was added to the project (he's also listed in the "criminal" project).

This project has seven high-importance featured articles, including one on W. E. B. Du Bois, who truly made an outstanding cultural contribution. Lots of young people use Wikipedia for research, and no doubt many will come to this project looking for outstanding African-Americans. Wikipedia has no problem providing lists of these great people, such as List of African-American Medal of Honor recipients, or List of black astronauts. I just wonder if this project has become a catch-all for anyone famous, or in this case infamous, and also African-American.

Maybe the simplest solution is proposing that the Rodney King article be renamed "The beating of Rodney King", because really, he was not noteworthy, but what happened to him was.

Hi Magnolia. This is super challenging stuff! ANd yes, the Rodney King situation is an interesting dilemma - it might be worth bringing up a proposed name change on the talk page. I do also agree about guidelines. Here is my suggestion: take a look at the criteria for inclusion for the women's history wikiproject - find them here. There was actually a "workshop" where community members developed the guidelines collaboratively. You can find that here. The amazing User:Voceditenore facilitated it. I'm quite pleased with the results, and I think it'd be ideal to see African Diaspora have something similar just modified. Because yes, not everyone and everything involving a "black person" needs to be listed - and we learned that quickly with women's history as people like Kim Kardashian were getting tagged as part of the women's history project - women's history doesn't mean every single "female" is part of it. Hope this helps a bit, keep me posted! My time is limited but I really want to see that project flourish - especially as I am shifting my own outreach work to engage people beyond just "women" (we need more diversity in general!). Invitation to participate

Hello SarahStierch, On the German-language Wikipedia the community has introduced a system for several years in what users conform that they have met other users in real life. This system was created to create more trust between users and thus creating a better and nicer place to work on the wiki. On the German-language Wikipedia it is a huge success and I translated almost everything of this tool in English so that also users from other Wikipedias can use it. It only makes sense to sign up into the system if you have met at least three other users in person. We have met and you have been several occasions where you have met other Wikimedians, so that shouldn't be a problem. You can sign up for the tool, after three other users confirm they have met you, you can confirm other users yourself. About this system, more information can be found at Wikipedia:Personal acquaintances. In the green section are the instructions. On Wikipedia:Personal acquaintances/Participants will grow a list of participants who are active in the English speaking parts of the world. Hi Ozhu - I've actually held an editathon at Hoyt previously (I lived there for about a year and a half; long story.) It went pretty well; there's a page in the Berkeley meetup archives floating around about it somewhere. That said, for various reasons involving central level management of the BSC not currently operating optimally, I'm not sure how fond they'd be of another. I'm not sure if this will help with regard to the citations but the Grimshaw Guitars website that I've used is actually a website maintained by a guitar enthusiast. Indeed the company ceased to exist in the late 1980s so this is in no way the company's own website. With that in mind, would the citations used be viewed as being more reliable?

Editing advice

Hi Sarah

Last year you wrote a page for Ruth_Leach_Amonette. I assume unbeknown to you, I was also creating that page around the same time and had had it rejected a couple of times. I was still working on fixing it, when I saw yours was live. As you may expect, I was a little upset, as my work was wasted and I still didn't understand really why my versions were rejected. I tried to find out if there was some way we could have collaborated on the article but it seems neither you nor I could have known the other was creating the same content. This experience did, to be honest, put me off contributing and apart from a minor edit on your article, I have not been active.

Fast forward to now, I recently came across a bunch of blog articles about the low numbers of women editing on Wikipedia and it reminded me how I had wanted to help but it hadn't worked out. Then I came across your own blog coincidently talking about the same issue. Anyway, what I want to say is - I'm a women, I'd like to contribute but I have no idea really what I did wrong with my first article. Given that you are very familiar with the content (you wrote the same page) could you help me understand how to improve so I can start contributing again.

Hi Suzie, great to hear from you. Crazy, I wrote the Ruth Leach Amonette article in September 2013, and no, had no clue it was being created else where. I'm sorry if it was frustrating! Keep in mind I have been editing for over seven years, so it's always easy for me to write a new article and have little to no problems. I learned how to write Wikipedia articles by just copying what other people had done - the citation style, the infoboxes, the style of writing (boring), etc. Also, Articles for Creation did not exist when I started, and thank goodness. It's a really messed up process that deters a lot of great people, like your self (men/women/anyone) from contributing because it's a negative and often unfruitful process. I generally suggest having it drafted in your sandbox (like you originally did) and then ask editors in a project (i.e. WikiProject Women Scientists) or ask people on Facebook or a mailing list or Twitter to take a look. Then after feedback, improve, and then post it directly to Wikipedia, not the articles for creation, as long as you know the subject is notable.

I did take a look at the article you created for Amonette (see it here). My biggest concern is the citation style. You can compare my version to your version and see how I cited the article - we cite things a bit different here on Wikipedia than in traditional academic circles, and we prefer to use less citations but make sure everything is cited, if that makes sense. I also see that you created new footnotes for the same citation (the hall of fame link) when we could have just used one footnote (see the difference in mine in the reference section). It's confusing when you don't have someone to easily ask though, I know! :)

BUT, regardless of the citation style, your article WAS about a notable person, and anyone could have easily helped you clean up your citations rather than decline your article twice. So next time you want to write an article, feel free to ping my talk page, and I'll do my best to help, and if I can't, then I'll find someone who can (good people, feminist ally types :) ).

I hope this helps some- and yes, again, it can be tough to edit, but once you hit that magical moment of "getting it" and feeling confident - it's a piece of cake :) So please don't give up! Also, the WP:TEAHOUSE, which is a space I co-created to help new editors, is a great place to find help in a timely manner when I can't respond quickly (I travel a lot and haven't been editing much these days). Sarah Thank you so much for getting back to me and providing your advice. Yeah it's a weird coincidence for sure. I was working with a whole bunch of other newbies who wanted to create more pages on notable women on Wikipedia. I picked Ruth Leach Amonette because I'd recently read a little about IBM and realised she did not have a Wikipedia page. In the end I'm not sure the group got many done so I'll be able to share your feedback about trying again with them too.

It is very helpful to get your thoughts about the specific page (the citations do look pretty crazy...) but also how I could tackle a new page. I particularly like the idea of asking a group at Wikipedia to help, contribute and review the page before I submit it. This style of working is very familiar to me yet apart from the Teahouse was not something I was aware of or considered. It makes perfect sense now. Any other thoughts you may have are most welcome. List of suffragists

Hello, and good to meet you. I caught your name from an edit on one of the suffragists pages, and noticed you enjoy lists and know the importance to the flow of information of lists and templates (I've just done a month-long run through of connecting and adding to the slave pages here, and one example is I've doubled the slavery template, from 79 entires to 158 entries). All this is pre-hello's to ask you to please take a look at the List of suffragists and suffragettes page. Lots of entries yet to write and connect on there (I put several 'See also' listings on each page, and the template 'Suffrage' on many of them). This list is, imnho, very important to the history of movements, of nonviolent movements, and of the overall freedom direction of society, and any edging towards more completion and 'page value' seems to be beneficial towards the overall historical awareness of that wonderful movement (did you know Meryl Streep is playing Emmeline Pankhurst in a new film!!). One of my contributions to that page is the List of women's suffrage organizations, near its bottom. But you can see, if you take a look, the list is far from done, and is actually just a skeleton for the most part right now. So, come on in, the water's fine (I dive from the shallow end).
