Bears

Regarding your change to the bear article, you're right of course, the danger emanating from bears is a relative thing. Bears are for the most part _potentially_ dangerous for the most part depending on human behavior (sneak up on a grizzly and find out) and there have been cases where usually starving weaker young grizzly males have gone after humans as their last resort. Blacks bears are another story entirely. These are the most docile bears on the planet, hell I've seen pictures of one being cornered and chased up a tree by a house cat. A bunch of people have been keeping them for pets lately (the most demanding pet imaginable). Lynn Roger's research http://www.bearstudy.org/About_WRI/Lynn_Rogers.htm might be of interest.

There is one thing to keep in mind with Wikipedia. It was never meant to be up to date compendium of hard science or even to be truthful. More than anything it is a vehicle for the views of Jim Whales and his friends and they've created an environment where popular opinion prevails over fact. Re: Bears

Of course, bears will far more often than not avoid contact with people. Attacks are often caused unintentionally by people when they surprise a bear or close a garbage dump that a bear may become dependant on. All bears are powerful animals and are capable of killing people. There are recorded incidents of every extant species of wild bear attacking people, with the possible exception of the Spectacled Bear. I'm aware that the threat that people pose to bears dwarves the threat that bears pose to people.

Crotalus adamanteus

Just a few minutes ago you made a change to the Crotalus adamanteus article that I'm afraid I could not let stand. You changed:

"... The largest rattlesnake species, the maximum sizes reported are 244.0 cm (8 ft) (Klauber, 1972) and 251.5 cm (Ditmars, 1936). One captive specimen weighed over 26 pounds (12 kg). ... (Campbell & Lamar, 2004)"

... to

"... The largest rattlesnake species, the maximum sizes reported are 244.0 cm (8 ft) (Klauber, 1972) and 251.5 cm (Ditmars, 1936), and were estimated to weigh approximately 22 kg (48 lb) each. ... (Campbell & Lamar, 2004)"

The problem here is twofold: first, you added new information to a section of text that was already accurately paraphrased and referenced. However, your new information cannot be found in the original source text. This makes it look like your information came from Campbell & Lamar, 2004, even though it didn't. Second, you deleted the statement, also referenced from the same source, that indicated the maximum reported weight. Basically, what you've done is to replace accurate and referenced information with information from an unknown source. This is not helpful. If you must add additional information, or replace existing information, make sure you add a new reference to show where you got it. Hello, that was a good piece of information you added to Common Raven, but it would be helpful if you could format references using the cite format. This page - Template:Cite_web is helpful. There is also Template:Cite_book and Template:Cite_journal. Also, be wary of some web references as they are some way down the chain from even scholarly works. If in doubt just ask someone. Great Horned Owl

Hello Sandhill, thanks for the new information you added to Great Horned Owl and thank you for citing your source. I'm afraid I have reverted your change and I wanted to be sure to explain why. I took a look at the reference you cited http://www.canadianwildlife.ca/facts/Hornedowl.asp?page=/facts/Hornedowl and sure enough it does list 2.9kg as the high side weight for a Great-horned owl. I was curious about this as it contradicts the existing article. I checked the references cited at the bottom of that page and four of them were broken links. The ones that did work directly conflicted with the weight range cited in the article so the canadian wildlife page is not a very good source for information. Please keep working to improve pages but if you find a webpage that seems to conflict with what others have already written be sure the source is a good one. Thanks! Sarus wingspan

Do you have a reliable source for the 280 cm wingspan ? Please note at Talk:Sarus Crane - the ICF actually lists about 240 cm, afaik, wingspan is a tricky measure due to the subjectivity of its measurement and dependence on method used. The article incidentally was raised to GA status and one of the important features is the traceability to reliable sources such as books by specialists and journals. The above mentioned websites would not be considered particularly reliable. I also just noticed that the height was also exaggerated - most birds are 150 cm and the record bird was 180 cm but it seems like someone has rounded that off to 200 which is not very accurate. Hi, you have made several edits to articles about birds this evening which have left the pages with error messages showing in red towards the bottom, eg: Fork-tailed_Flycatcher. This has been because there was no {{reflist}} in the "References" section of the article. Next time you see this happen could you perhaps include that instruction rather than leaving the page in a "errored" state that causes it to display on the maintenance lists? It is usually easier for the person who made the edit to fix the problem than it is for someone who first has to work out what that person did before determining the changes necessary to fix it. Ignoring my previous

It seems that you have possibly not considered my previous message about messing up articles on birds due to a failure to use the reflist template. Yet again, there are multiple pages last edited by you on the maintenance lists because the references are "broken" as a consequence of this. I am inclined to treat any further such edits as vandalism and revert them - you are adding useful information but in a poor manner. If you do not understand how to use this template then please do contact me on my talk page and I will explain it to you. It really is not diffivult & you'll get the hang of it very quickly. Measurement sources

In some of the bird articles, the measurements from reliable regional handbooks are being overwritten with measurements from zoo sites and other non-reliable sources. Note that zoos often have hybrids/inbreds or birds of unknown pedigree and under/overnourished specimens while bird handbooks deal with variation within geographical populations. It would be preferable to entirely avoid citing stray zoo or bird websites as they are not considered as reliable sources. Perhaps you can also discuss this on WT:BIRD but I am afraid some of the measurements added are entirely dubious. Shyamal (talk) 02:08, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

The measurements of the Hyacinth Macaw were adequately referenced with one of Forshaw's books. Forshaw is one of the world's experts on parrots, so there was no need to change the weight range of this sourced from Forshaw's book. I have undone your edit, because information from www.birdieboutique.com does not override Forshow's data. Year of book

Thank you for using in-line references. I was interesting in the book on bird masses, so I did a search for it on the internet. Looking at the first few pages on-line by following the links on this page suggests that the book is dated 1993. Wildcat

   I guess it was spotting "preanal", as an unfamiliar word in the 1st line of a 'graph of Wildcat#Build, that led me to work so extensively without reading the other sections, and a lot of it overlapped with your recent edit to the article (the most recent interesting one), which affected that section. My comments in talk:Wildcat#Pre-anal vs. preanal, talk:Wildcat#Body length, and talk:Wildcat#The cool norths all relate to that section, and if you don't know how to get an automated Diffs listing of what i changed from and to in the article, respond to this note, just below it. (I'll watch yr talk page for a while.) I hope at the least that you'll react if i misconstrued your wording in the analysis i applied in the last of those 3 talk sections: i am claiming no subject knowledge, and just trying to infer, or guess, what was intended by wordings that were ambiguous or at least syntactically awkward. Undoubtedly i said mostly too much in my talk contribs and the "Reason" fields of my tags in the article; don't worry about embarrassing me with very specific requests like "Did you mean that..." or "What in the world did you mean by..." questions. Re: Andean condors

Non-citation

I noticed several inappropriate changes in measurements of birds with the citation given as "The Book of Indian Birds" by Salim Ali. I have the book, and checking it shows that the cited reference says nothing about the weights or measurements that you mention. I think this is a serious matter that needs to be avoided particularly in well-referenced articles. Look, this is the edition of Ali's book that I have and you are the only one I am aware of who feels these particular citations are peculiar. The cover art is exactly the same and the online book seller even describes it as the 1993 edition. On the flap with the publisher information, it is described as copyrighted in the year 1993. I'm afraid you are simply incorrect regarding the length measurements in cm and, in some cases, the standing measurements in cm of the birds on the color plates. If you want to view these, I recommend buying this book then, even if you already have another edition.

I too have questions about the citations you've been adding to this book. First, you've been using the ISBN "0-149-563731-3" which fails the parity check. I think the actual ISBN is "0-19-563731-3" (without a "4"). In my search to fix this issue, I also had trouble finding the exact book you meant to reference because of the 1993 issue. Eventually I determined that you most likely meant the twelfth edition which was published in 1996, not 1993. The previous eleventh edition was first published way back in 1979, with reprints in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992. The link above you provided doesn't seem to be totally working the way it once did but a link to the cover suggests you do have the twelfth edition. It is possible is that you have obtained a pre-publication version of the twelfth edition from 1993 that was not ready to be published and was using an invalid ISBN on purpose. If you could provide another link to a cover that matches your edition, we can solve this. Second, I too am having trouble verifying that this book actually confirms the information being cited. I might have not known at that the time at about copyright infringement, at any rate, I don't recall copying and pasting into the Eagle-Owl for a copyrighted source, if so thank you for catching my error. No, it is one of scholarship...One might use similar language from one's resources, but I invite you to review my recent edits of the GHO article and their sources to determine if this falls under you definition of "plargiarism", which I am not sure is correct if you are sourcing your references.

hi Sandhillcrane – this edit you made to the Steppe eagle article is the single biggest edit I can recall seeing on Wikipedia! Out of curiosity: where did you draft the contents of this edit? Did you use one of Wikipedia's editors (see: mw:Editors)? A third-party editor like Google Docs or Microsoft Word? I use Excel to sort out references as I research and then wrote the actual Wikipedia article on Microsoft Word. Before I submit a page but after I make the edits on Microsoft Word I tend to do "Show Preview" a number of times until I'm satisfied with the way the page looks. Nice to meet you, Peter, I'm Sam.
