WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

edit

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer   Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK requirements

edit

Hey! I noticed that you've had quite a few articles written and displayed on DYK. I'm writing Draft:Doryrhamphus excisus. I know that there is a character number requirement for DYK, but is there a requirement for coverage of the topic? Thanks, --Bananasoldier (talk) 07:34, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean by coverage of the topic? The full set of rules are here by the way. Samwalton9 (talk) 09:58, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
For example, I cannot simply have the 1.5k criteria with an article that only talks about the animal's diet, right? I need it to be balanced, with coverage of taxonomy, habitat, distribution, description, and diet? Bananasoldier (talk) 15:21, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Nah I think that's fine, I don't see anything in the rules against it anyway. Samwalton9 (talk) 15:25, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Haha, okay. Would this be interesting, "Did you know that a male orange and blue pipefish (Doryrhamphus excisus) carries eggs in a brooding pouch like a seahorse?" I don't know what I'd put if I finished the article and submitted it for DYK. --Bananasoldier (talk) 17:02, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Are you doing any collabs? Bananasoldier (talk) 17:04, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think that's pretty interesting yeah :) Not currently but wouldn't be against it! I never got round to finishing Draft:Firefly Online if you fancied it? Samwalton9 (talk) 17:51, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Watch out with Firefly by the way, there was an unofficial game being created, which has now stopped because an official one is being made. I got confused for quite a while about that :D Samwalton9 (talk) 23:40, 7 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that, too. The unofficial is called Firefly Universe, or something, right? Thanks for the heads up, nonetheless. :) Bananasoldier (talk) 02:06, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. Boy, do you work quickly! Bananasoldier (talk) 02:13, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also, would you mind using your DYK checker to see how many more characters I need forDraft:Doryrhamphus excisus? The article still needs work, but I'm still interested in the how much more to write until the minimum. Bananasoldier (talk) 06:38, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
1,900 according to Word, the DYK checker I have only works in article space for whatever reason. And ha the io9 article was just a gold mine of information! Samwalton9 (talk) 11:38, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I didn't realize one could use Word. :P Bananasoldier (talk) 15:04, 8 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Viruses

edit

Have you ever gotten Internet viruses from doing research for Wikipedia? I have to wipe my computer now because it has a virus. I might not be looking for sources for a while because of this incident (2nd time). Bananasoldier (talk) 07:16, 9 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Can't say that I have. Do you have up to date anti-virus? Instead of wiping have you tried using Malware Bytes Anti-Malware? Has sorted out any virus problems I've had in the past. Samwalton9 (talk) 11:11, 9 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I just use Microsoft Security Essentials, but it didn't detect the virus that was popping up (bad Bloons joke) all over the place with ads. Bananasoldier (talk) 16:37, 9 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I just learned how templates work, so your answer makes sense to me. I think the real problem was that I was using my browser's Find function to look for the keyword on those pages. The problem isn't the templates, but that the keyword is in a collapsed navbox. The browser obviously can't find that. If I search for the keyword in the page source, it's still not there, this time because of the template. So you can see the origin of my confusion. But of course if I "show" the navbox, the link is indeed there. If there are hints lying around on Wikipedia to watch out for this, I never saw them. Anyway, now I know. Thanks! Larry Doolittle (talk) 18:00, 9 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

No problem, I did that too initially! Samwalton9 (talk) 18:16, 9 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

The Castle Doctrine

edit

What would you say is necessary to bring The Castle Doctrine to GA? Reception seems a little short, but maybe there just aren't that many reviews. Tezero (talk) 17:49, 10 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmm. Having only been released recently I'd like to wait a week or two at least for more reviews to be released before that. Without reading through it again in detail it actually reads fairly comprehensively other than the reception section, as you said. Samwalton9 (talk) 17:55, 10 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I can certainly wait that long. Tezero (talk) 01:10, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Whattaya think now? Tezero (talk) 17:55, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
GameSpot did a review, and I'm fairly certain Hardcore Gamer are notable, so those should be added. After that I'm not currently certain but I'll have a look through it later on and see if I think anything needs doing (and do it if I do). Samwalton9 (talk) 17:59, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Personally I have never seen the point of creating one-liners like this one, but the source in the article is certainly good enough for what little there is, and he does in fact fulfil Wikipedia's notability guidelines (WP:POLITICIAN, to be specific). --Hegvald (talk) 15:44, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Do you think so? It's not an independent source. He may well fulfil those notability guidelines though, yeah. Samwalton9 (talk) 17:30, 16 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sam: In a way, I think you're both right, but I've declined the PROD. The article is not sufficiently sourced for a BLP, but you need to use a BLPPROD rather than a PROD to force that into a "source or delete" request. On the other hand, Hegvald is entirely right that, assuming the single statement is correct, that the subject does meet WP:POLITICIAN assuming the information is accurate, as a member of a national legislature. Anyway, figured I'd at least let you know. Cheers, --71.202.246.195 (talk) 01:50, 19 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bloons TD: "bloons" vs. "Bloons"

edit

I received an email from the Ninja Kiwi support. They answered that "bloons" is intentionally spelled lowercase as a common noun. Does this need to be mentioned in the article or no? I can prove to you that this fact is true by asking them to post a Tweet about the issue, which they are happy to do. What do you think? Thanks, Bananasoldier (talk) 04:18, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Do you have any ideas for things we could ask them? They already acknowledge that they don't really have anything for game development, though :P Bananasoldier (talk) 04:19, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Since there was debate either way, it might be a good idea to lower case it anywhere it's upper case in the article, but we shouldn't be mentioning it if no sources do, and I'd advise against asking them to post something so that we can include it in the article. Primary sources should be avoided and it's not a good look to ask someone to say something so it can be included in their article. I wouldn't worry about asking them for anything else for the same reason. Samwalton9 (talk) 13:19, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Would it be a good idea to use a Tweet from Ninja Kiwi as proof for clarification on the Bloons TD talk page? That way, if someone goes about upper casing all the "bloons" in the article, we can explain the situation to them with proof. However, that might be a little too excessive thing to worry about, and perhaps it's not worth the hassle. Yeah? Bananasoldier (talk) 14:57, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah that would probably be a good idea. No need to get them to tweet it though, you can just quote from your email. Samwalton9 (talk) 14:58, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Understood. Bananasoldier (talk) 15:13, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey Sam! Sorry for the late reply- I have been extremely busy this (final) semester, so my activity has been somewhat diminished. You were asking about my posted reward for The International? Well, if the article is brought to GA status, I can promise an attendance ticket to the physical event. The quality of the ticket is up for debate, but I have been in VIP attendance for the last two years, so... I'd say it's safe to say I'm qualified to make an offer. On a further note, there is the stipulation that it refers to the event after completion, so it could be either the 2014 or 2015 event- it is entirely dependent upon the rate for which the quality is improved. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

edit

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1.   Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2.   Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3.   WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Hey Sam. Just thought I'd let you know that since I deleted the copyvio that was at the target title and the only edit to the page (before you edited it) was me creating the redirect, you should have been able to move over the redirect yourself. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:16, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Blergh didn't realise you could move over redirects to the moving page. Thanks! Sam Walton (talk) 13:30, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thanks for approving my DYK nomination. Just for future reference, after submitting a DYK nomination, should I review someone else's? - HappyWaldo (talk) 02:27, 28 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

edit

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer   Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist   Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato.   Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
