  The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
You deserve The Tireless Contributor Barnstar for your contributions to the   WikiProject Sri Lanka articles over seven hours in one day. --♪♫ ĽąĦĩŘǔ ♫♪ walkie-talkie 14:30, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! It was not seven hours straight, though, I did take long breaks... I just noticed, that the article count for WikiProject Sri Lanka appeared to be a bit neglected, and not even Murali is "officially" covered by the WP Sri Lanka. On paper, even WikiProject SpongeBob SquarePants (of all things, good heavens!) is four times bigger than WP Sri Lanka. There are plenty of articles and plenty of activity, but it's not really connected to the project at the moment. I'm going to keep tagging articles, and I think the categories are not applied systematically and consistently to towns - I rather suspect there are relatively many articles still uncategorized (that's how I found myself messing around Sri Lanka, by following uncategorized articles). I'll have to poke around a bit! – Sadalmelik 19:43, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cool !! edit

Hey, this image Image:Java Locator Topography.png is cool. It really helps a lot. I see from your Commons contributions that you created a lot of topographic maps. We have a long-abandoned sub-project in Wikipedia:WikiProject Indonesia/Cartography to make locator maps for islands in Indonesia. And your topographic map is badly needed for such a large country. It is really helpful to have such a map to locate objects in more detail. Do you have already maps for other islands in Indonesia? We are planning to have locator maps of Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Java (you have it now), Lesser Sunda Islands, Maluku Islands and Papua. If you can make such a map, then we are really grateful to you. I'm going to include your Java locator map into the sub-project. Thanks & cheers. — Indon (reply) — 20:32, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes I agree with Indon, these maps are fantastic. I have an additional request: could you produce maps for the Mentawai Islands and Nias? (Caniago 04:46, 2 September 2007 (UTC))Reply
Done :) As is Simeulue since I had the data uncompressed and ready. – Sadalmelik 08:09, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Appreciation edit

Hello. I must say big "thank you" as an appreciation of your work. I am a huge geography geek and like your topographic maps. Maybe some day you will create them for all countries in the world. Sooner or later I will give you a barnstar for your effort. I am looking forward for your next maps. I will probably kindly request creation of some maps when you will be less busy. - Darwinek 22:36, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Nice to know people like them. It doesn't actually take that long to make these maps, 10-40 min per map if I have everything ready and coastline data is reasonably accurate. SRTM data only covers between 60 S and 60 N, and I have most of the data now... I still need to download North America, a bit of Asia and Australia, and several isolated islands. – Sadalmelik 08:24, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Why should wait? You have done terrific jobs working on maps and not only just a map, but a very useful ones, see this article. It enhances visualization of the article. Keep up the good work! — Indon (reply) — 13:23, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I have been caught up with a bit of real-life lately... It's funny, though, I did try to use one of locators in a bit similar way than you in Adam Air Flight 574. Copied examples, modified and didn't get it to work. I just wanted to see whether a black cone would be more suitable for mountains than a red dot. Oh well, at least it works. Though it seems that {{Location map}} allows custom markers, so I really didn't have to use the more complex stuff... – Sadalmelik 20:10, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

(Off Topic) Question for Map edit

Hello Sadalmelik, on your User page you write: “Need maps? I am also happy to help, if you need a map or two.” Well, for a little book about traditional art from Tanzania we could probably use a topographic map like the one you have contributed to Wikimedia Commons (file Tanzania_Topography.png).

Could you create a special version of this map for us? We would need just the plain topography, i.e. without country borders (the thick red line) and without the legend of heights (bottom left) and without the km scale (bottom right). This would be really great! It would be even better if you could create the map with a higher size or resolution resp. (ca. 1.5 up to 2.0 times of the current size), if this is possible. As it is a small book project with nearly no profit, we can’t offer you to pay money, but we will mention you in the book at the appropriate places (below the card, in the impressum, on the Thanks page) and send you a book when it is finished.

The book will appear in German in a little German publishing house, Edition Phaistos; there is a web page about another book about African Art made by the same editior: Dolls from Africa. The new book about Tanzania will look similarly, but will be a bit more scientific, and will get printed in the next months.

If you could help, we would be very happy. Please contact me via e-mail to [1]. You can also see my user page at the German Wikipedia project: de:Benutzer:Aristeas. Best and thanks in advance, Roman Eisele. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.180.123.83 (talk) 16:46, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mali Topography Map edit

Hi, I'm researching Mali's climate and geography and I stumbled upon your topography map. Could you please provide me with a source for the information that was used in your image? Much appreciated. σмgнgσмg 12:56, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I downloaded the data from here, but there are other sources for the same data in different formats (GeoTiff etc). The choice of format depends on the program you use to display it, but transforming it to various formats should be relatively easy, and I suppose most programs should be able to import these. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! – Sadalmelik 20:57, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

HI thanks for your Botswanan villages. Could you add an infobox like Modipane in future . I was going through the African settlements and ensuring they all have an infobox settlement which can include other data at a later date thanks. Also can you tag your articles as {{AfricaProject|class=stub|importance=low|Botswana=yes}} ♦ King of Baldness ♦ $1,000,000? 20:23, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes unfortunately there is little on most places in Africa on the web. What you are doing is essential even if they remain stubs for a while. I started an article on Akwidaa a few weeks ago and would love to see even all villages with an article of some sort. The major problem as you well know is the uneveness in available information but in time I hope this will change hence the infoboxes too ♦ King of Baldness ♦ $1,000,000? 20:52, 7 February 2008 (UTC).Reply

You seem to be adding articles on all the hotlist of places I have for development!!!! If only there were more editors like us! Most of the existing Madagascan articles on towns are one liners and I aimed to gradually add infoboxes to them too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:34, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

When you have time could you recolour the Angolan locator map too like Madagascar. Pink is a silly colour ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:37, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oops I didn;t know you created the pink maps. I don;t think the yellow is perfect either I prefer the green and blue relief maps also but it isn;t always possible. It can be tricky knowing whether or not to include the municipalitiy and town as one or in seperate articles, if there was enough info there should be two seperate articles but this may not be possible. Either way I think you are doing a great job to date and look forward to your coming articles from the different provinces of Madagascar. Yeah. I filled a similar request for John, a short while back, with, similar results. What happened? The relevant Wikiproject contacted me, I put the bot on hold, until they could verify the remaining cats, and, John cleaned up after the bot, as promised. No ANI, no calls for bans, no big deal. It's all blown out of proportion, due to the bot being BCBot. Just thought you'd find it amusing. SQLQuery me! 02:24, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Burkina Faso edit

Hi. Thanks for altering those Angolan and Zambian maps -they look much better. Is there any way you could create a more attractive map for Burkina Faso? Image:Burkina.PNG is not the best ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:40, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your're a gem brilliant thanks!!! I;ve just been adding some Burkinabe image incidentally -I found one of a cinema for Cinema of Burkina Faso, Quite a novelty that. Hi sorry to bother you again but can you make a note to make identically constructed maps for Senegal and Gambia. The Senegal one is a horrid yellow, and the Gambia one is in grey scale and too small. I think the style you have chosen now looks excellent. Thanks, let me know if you can do this, ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:06, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Looks fine thanks. Incidentally my parents didn't like Gambia as a country either -they said it was rather laden with crime and quite unsafe. I'm currently filling out stubs on the district of the republic of the congo -hopefully details and references can be added later. Keep up the great work with Madagascar ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:12, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi when you have some time could you create one to replace the existing one for Tanzania, and also see if you can create the maps for the smaller countries of Lesotho, Sao Tome and Principe and Cape Verde -those four at present don't have a pin. Thats about it then I think. Cheers ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:46, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've got one now for Swaziland its just the others. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:51, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Top man thanks! I've just been adding some pictures to the main Ghana article ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:52, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Check out Agua-Coco and Assomada. Looks cool doesn;t it!! One favor. This isn't for Africa but could you create one for French Guiana? We have Image:French Guiana CIA.gif but no pin or locator template and I want to cover the towns rather than just the municipalities. I think it would be better to have a map which shows the relief as rivers as so important to that area. You see I have one for everywhere in South and Central America except French Guiana. This would just about cover it I think.

Ahh. Actually Chad doesn't have a decent map yet -it looks like the Senegal one did. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 23:47, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Yes I'm aware that falling rain shouldn't be taken as a primary source as I and a few others have found the population figures to be very inaccurate. However I believe the situation and coordinates are generally correct. I took for granted elevation was too, as I thought it was generated by satellite observation. Its just i don't want to spend the next 80 years!!! manually adding them when we could get them up and running automatically and hopefully reliably. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 23:26, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

As you know I;ve done a lot of work on places in many countries and the biggest problem is finding statistics on population etc from reliable sources. I know you said about reliable data exisitngon the web for most countries its just for many places there doesn't seem to be anything available. I really think its about time something was organized where wikipedia could obtain statistics on any settlement in any country and begin to build a completely unviersal guide to the world geographically. I am very surprised you are able to write as much as you have done for starter on places in Madagascar. I thought that country was like so many of the others where online sources are seriously lacking ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 23:34, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I fully agree with on everything you said. But wikipedia needs to sort out something. That's all I'm saying. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:40, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Political map of Africa edit

Hi! You've noted on your user page that you're willing to consider map creation/editing requests, so if you have some time, I was wondering whether you could help me with a certain map. Could you modify either Image:BlankMap-Africa.png or Image:Blank Map-Africa.svg (or create a new map based on those) to include Cape Verde, the Comoros, and the Canary Islands? There may be other minor issues with the map(s), but the omission of those three relatively large island groups stands out. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 19:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, it seems this is the best I can do. I simply cannot handle svg... BTW, the time stamp on your message is quite interesting! Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 18:08, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the new map - it should do just fine for the purpose I had in mind: creating a map for Afrobarometer. I would have tried to edit it myself, but my success in editing graphics is, to put it mildly, rather depressing. :) As for the time stamp ... oops! I had previously made the same request to another editor (who was unable to do it) and copy-pasted part of the message including (apparently) the signature and time stamp. Sorry about that... Thanks again, Black Falcon (Talk) 18:54, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Canadian provincial maps edit

Hi hope things are good. I have a little request. Could you create a set of attractive maps in the African style for each of the Canadian provinces? The ones we have a tpresent are really awful and look like silver blocks. Let me know if you could do this cheers as it will change the appearance of several thousand articles. Its wonderful to hear from you. I feared the worst that you had left or something. Yes we need provincial maps of Canada to replace the horrid silver ones. But for Uruguay, Jordan, Afghanistan and Egypt just the country maps. All the best ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:46, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Remember though with Botswana I'm half way through putting them in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Botswana ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:48, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi I would recommend reorganizing the Madagascan towns and villages by province. E.g Category:Cities, towns and villages in Antananarivo Province etc. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:20, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah no Category:Antanararivo Province would remain; that category would be for general articles from that province e.g landmarks, people etc. Its such the settlements that would become one category Category:Cities, towns and villages in Antananarivo Province which would be a sister category to both "towns in madagascar" and Antananarivo Province. Generally I have been recategorizing manually but as you have done so much on Madagascar with 700 odd articles and counting a bot would be best to sort that. Could you arrange something and propose the change as I suggested. I'll comment once you have posted something -just let me know when. Its probably best it is done sooner than later ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:43, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats great but you;ll need to move Cities in Madagascar as the main category to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Madagascar and completely empty the individual cities, towns and villages categories and create redirects the the main cities, towns and villages in Madagascar. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Its OK I've moved it but Darwinek is concerned about the 48 "official cities and townns" ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:43, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree completely. Also a district/provincial capital category and some form of navigation box connecting them would be good. I don't have a problem if Darwinek wants to put the 48 cities back in the city category as long as it doesn't affect the new provincial category structure which is very good I think ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:49, 25 April 2008 (UTC) OK cool, but it is only Canada we need the provincial maps for. Like Jordan , Afghan etc for Uruguay we just need a national map too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:34, 28 April 2008 (UTC) Eeeesh. That doesn't sound too healthy. Lets hope it starts behaving. Thanks for that, ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:16, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Earlier I created Category:Departments of Niger which User:TL miles is going to reference later and develop. Would you have the ability to create some maps for them? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC) Ah I see. DOn't worry then ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking more like a district map like you did for Kyrygzstan ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:18, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK but apparently the arrondissements are now Departments and the Departments are now called Regions. Sounds confusing but the government changed the naming in 2006 according to Miles. Any idea what country you want to work on next after Madagascar? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

No the borders I believe are still exactly the same just different naming system I think. Its not highly important though as we have those brightly colored ones already. Yes Mozambqiue is one of the poorest developed countries on here. Thank you for checking the work on Nampoina! And thank you in advance for your future critics and contributions. Concerning the form, as I'm a novice, this article will surely need a lot of "cleanup" (style, too long sentences, grammar, useless red links). Conserning the backgrounds, I think also it will need a big cleanup: Perhaps the chapter on the Historical context is too long and should be included in another article about the Zafimamy/Alahamadintany kingdom of the North (the Nampoina's father clan). May be the chapter about his Reign will need more developpement also (there's some ideas i the same article in French). Finally I'd like to add some pictures for each sub-chapter, what do you think about that? (for example: a picture on Nampoina's hut at Ambohimanga, on Ambohimanga hill, on Merina ricefields, etc.). I let you check, correct, comments all of that... Thank you again.

PS: 1)It's a pity that the books in Malagasy have not ISBN (I've not found it for instant), I hope it'll not depreciate the quality... 2)I cited the books citation by memory, is it necessary to give the page on each citation? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mounblow (talkcontribs) 19:38, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

At least I can add infoboxes and couple of references to each of them, which should be enough to keep article taggers at bay. I think the older articles were all written by a single editor, who is no longer active and never finished his/her project. – Sadalmelik 18:11, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Indeed LOL. Perhaps he is hired by MI6 or Bond to attack Bald evil villains! Yes with Laos the vast majority of the old districts seem to have remained completely intact. However one district dissolved a few years back and was merged into Vientiane Province which could affect one or two province shapes. See Districts of Laos, it is the last one on the list. However the vast majority seem as before. Now its stub time again! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

well yes but how do you suggest we get them onto here more efficiently then??? I don't see how using coordinates from the website is copying. If anything it is google maps not maplandia. I'm pretty certain they mean copying their maps. PLaces names and coordinates are naturally public domain. This could seriously disrupt my work on here. Approaching governments is all well and good in principal but I don't see any evidence of this happening

♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:03, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I know you always have very good intentions in regards to the prgression of wikipedia and towards myself as an editor and a person I know this. Ideally I would also stick to using official goverment sources if possible but the idea that the Burmese goverment is going to give an online website like wikipedia statistics and info on their 40,000 towns and villages is a highly improbable one. I'm just trying to find a way that we can receive complete world coverage on here but also have reliable and adequate information for each place (which such goverment contacts would allow). The first stage is to get them started geographically. Obviously I wasn't aware of maplandia's "robot" policy but given that settlements are organized by district and region by country on their I find it a very useful tool as a start, clearly I would wish to obtain full government details which would be used later as the main references. I am certain maplandia in regards to copywright means its maps, the idea that a site as large as wikipedia uses their names and coordinates illegally doesn't seem right. I'm certain it is their maps which they don'y want copied. Given the traffic on wikipedia I seriously doubt the owner of maplandia would object to wikipedia having many external links to the site and any links are likely to benefit that site considerably. I'll try to contact him and see what I can do. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:20, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes China isn't exactly the most cooperative either is it. I won't stop adding articles manually given that the names/coordinates can be obtained from severla others sites (how they can claim copywright over maps which are labelled as google anyway I don't know) but I can drop the reference to maplandia and just have an external link to the site so it doesn't imply they were used as a source. There is far too much missing to completely stop adding more articles to underdeveloped countries on here. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:01, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I have some map requests.

There is also still the Canadian provincial maps and the Laos district ones. Did you have any luck on this? Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:45, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that &‐ I haven't had much time for Wikipedia lately. The location maps should be easy (Solomon Islands is unlikely to show anything apart from water, though). Canadian maps require a bit of tweaking still (my first try on Alberta included an arctic island...). The data I had for Laos is complete rubbish, but I stumbled on an interesting Laotian website (http://www.nra.gov.la/Data.php), which has much better looking data. It does show 142 districts, while 139 should be the current count, but here has been at least two mergers of districts... I will have to see if I can work out how they should go. – Sadalmelik 15:35, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stubble Quail edit

Hi Sadalmelik, just noticed that you've re-posted an image into the Stubble Quail article, unfortunately it isn't actually a Stubble Quail but a Painted Button-Quail (both are Australian). We are trying to contact the photographer to let him know that he has wrongly identified it, but as we don't have a pic of a Painted Button-quail maybe he could insert this image into the correct page. All the best, hope you have a speedy recovery from your illness, Aviceda talk 07:41, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note - I have been adding photos from the available images at Commons and if there is nothing suitable, searching Flickr for free photos. I should have checked the identification... I have never been in Australia, so I'm not familiar with either bird. I added a brief comment on the Commons description about the probable misidentification. That banner on top of this page is too a bit misleading - I seem to be quite active again. Should reword it, really, I just left it there in case I disappear again for an extended period. Yay, a convert! :) When I'm around (which in the past two weeks has been frequently, but earlier this year not so much), I usually try to whittle away at SCV. I remember in times past when the regulars would completely clear SCV! Now only a dream... :P My (unsolicited) advice is to try not to get burned out! My absence earlier this year was partly because of that ... so I only work a little bit at a time now (of course, that may not work for everybody). --Iamunknown 15:39, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'll probably head back to mainspace at some time, but at the moment weeding out copyvios is more fun than that! I have a rather big project in mind, but I'm lacking the energy to start (or even to finish some of the old projects). I do wonder whether the CSBot notices could encourage more rewriting by the authors, though. Most of the time, they are very new contributors, who probably do not know anything about the copyright. – Sadalmelik 16:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I understand you are quite good with maps. I need a high resolution 2D version of a map with all the continents marked with country names and their capitals only. I have a few maps but smaller countries are not so visible on them. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 15:16, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can probably do something, but only in png... if you would like to show even the smallest countries, then svg really is much better, but I cannot manage svg-maps, despite many tries (I'll have to figure it out at some point). In any case it will have to wait for a couple week, as I have a work deadline to meet, and my time for Wikipedia will be limited. One possibility would be modifying Image:World map pol 2005 v02.svg by hand... – Sadalmelik 1‐6:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
That will do. I have to use it in a project. Though this one is pefectly fine, if you have any better version I can do with that. And I can wait. Thanks. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 09:02, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nepal district maps edit

Hello Sadalmelik. I've just found that UN maps are public domain with Template:PD-UN. Any idea how I could upload district maps of Nepal as at Sindhuli District to wikipedia. I;m not familiar with how to save PDF files and uploaded them to wiki. Could you upload them all to the commons if you know how. See the one at Sarlahi District Image:NepalSarlahiDistrictmap.png. I only uploaded it once Fritzpoll had saved it elsewhere to rid of uploading the adobe logo. Unfortunately Fritz is not responding so could you help? We need 75 UN maps; one for each district of Nepal. Count Blofeld 12:46, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

They wouldn't accept a straight renaming. I believe you have to save them at some medium like here (it expires after sometime) to switch from pdf to jpg or svg. I originally tried to upload directly from pdf to jpg and of cours eit didn't work or only revealed the adobe logo rather than the image. The maps will prove very useful and in the future deririative maps could probably made for all the VDCs I've been starting in Nepal. However the forst step is the get the 75 maps onto here and place them in the district articles. If you could save them with the naming type Image:NepalSarlahiDistrictmap.png this would be awesome as I've set up the categories in the commonshere. Just needs another 74 maps to go in it. Cheers, hope you are well Count Blofeld 13:11, 4 November 2008 (UTC).Reply

Note the maps can be accessed by changing the naming at the top. E,g see Sindhuli. If you wanted to access a map from a different region you'd change it to western for example and then the relevant district. Count Blofeld 13:14, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

That looks great. If you can if you are uploading portrait shape ones like Sarlahi District, see if you can boost the standard size to 800px. At present Image:NepalSarlahiDistrictmap.png is around 400px normal default. The Sindhuli map size wise is perfect Count Blofeld 19:10, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. We could do with Latin Americanizing and Asianizing the wiki too!! But without a doubt Africa is by far the worst in terms of content and we want to see an encyclopedia covering the world as fully and completely as possible. Count Blofeld 09:06, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for doing that. Hopefully there will all eventually be expanded like Sundarijal . There isn't too many left to start but I'm feeling pretty tired of the wiki at present. I'll take it easy for a while. Yes I know what you mean about Madagascar. It feels quite disappointing when you know they haven't had much traffic and haven't been expanded. Most people who use wikipedia don't seem to care about anywhere in Africa, let alone a specific country. For me however, the whole point of wikipedia is to gain access to information and knowledge of subjects, particularly places/cultures that I am unfamiliar with and why covering such countries in Africa is vitally important to the value of wikipedia. Template:Location map Bali Topography edit

Great maps you've been doing; it looks like you've done hundreds. Thanks.

I took a poke at creating another dynamic locator map and ran into two issues.

  • I messed up the math somewhere re e/w and re-calculating didn't work
  • The convention is to use a map without lat/long lines and the coords in the margins, so I need a variant of the map, namely;
    File:Bali Locator Topography.png

I'll revisit the math with the current image when I'm fresh. If this gets working, I'll put it to good use.

Here is where I tried it and reverted it due to being off a bit to the east. If you use the regular coord link to get an off-site map, It'll show a point a bit further west.

Fish copyvios edit

You seem to slapping copyright violation notices on a lot of fish related articles. Unfortunately, the URL link leads to a lengthy discussion page about what to do. Surely, each article that you flag, should have a link to the actual page that has been allegedly copied. As it stands, I cannot check the truth (or otherwise) of the allegation. Astronaut (talk) 18:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • The short story is that it's a long story :) Basically the creator of those fish articles has added some 2,500 articles to Wikipedia, and virtually every one of those articles are copyvios (except some genus articles, which are basically just lists of species and therefore not copyrightable). The only violations that I can handle directly are those articles where the sources are on-line. However, many of the fish articles are copied from printed sources, either from Ayling's Collins Guide to the Sea Fishes of New Zealand or from Compagno's Sharks of the World. In these cases we have decided to tag them as copyvios and investigate them later. An editor with access to Ayling has been working on the fish articles from the start, and it seems we have finally found a copy of Compagno, too. Oh, and no articles will be deleted. – Sadalmelik 19:46, 1 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am working on a school project and I could really use us a topological map that covers most of Near East in some detail. Could you please give me advice on how to create such map or would you have time to help me?

Higher Resolution map of Zambia edit

Greetings

My name is John. I am a researcher who is doing work in Zambia. Is there any chance I could get a higher-resolution topographic map of Zambia than what is listed on the web? I would like to use it in a publication (and cite you as the source of course).

Thanks John (john_mischler@yahoo.com)

Topographic maps of Indonesia edit

Hi Sadalmelik! I am working on National parks of Indonesia articles and I find your maps add great value! I wonder if it would be possible to make a locator map for the Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tengarra) region as well, at as similar scale as the File:Java Locator Topography.png. Would be very usefull for illustrating several articles. Would be very thankful. Elekhh (talk) 03:54, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sadalmelik: I read a lot of high profile articles and am really impressed with the comparative quality of the Kobe article that you protected. Nice job! Bull Market 21:26, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

geographical map of North Africa edit

Hi Sadalmelik !! Congratulations for the excellent geographical maps you produce. I was looking for a geographical map of North Africa and then found yours in Wikipedia.

One question. I am working on an article on Saharan dust and it would be nice to make some references on geographical features and to paint some atmospheric airflows on one your maps. More specifically, I would be nice if these two maps (of North Africa including the Canary Islands) would be available. Map-1: from 20ºW to 15ºE and from 15ºN to 40ºN. Map-2: from 20ºW to 40ºE and from 0ºN to 40ºN. It would be one similar to that you did for Algeria, but littler wider (the first with higher resolution). I read that you are open for collaborations doing just 1 or 2 maps. Do you think it would be possible ? We may have contact by email if you prefer (guanarame1@gmail.com).

I have not experience in Wikipedia (this is my first time), so maybe this is not the proper way to ask for collaborations. Just let me know how to proceed please, Thanks in advance

how to generate maps from GLOBE edit

Hi Sadalmelik,

Could you show me where/how to generate maps from GLOBE data? I'd like a hi-res map of the Tanzanian Rift Valley with specific altitudes marked.

Madagascar Geography Stubs edit

Also posted on WikiProject Madagascar's discussion page -- looking for comments or thoughts from the Madagascar editors before going ahead. Madagascar's geography stubs still use the old 6 province system. WikiProject Stub sorting approved creating 22 new stub types for the new regions. The discussion and proposed stub types are here for your review. I'll be creating the stubs and starting the sort this weekend if all looks good. Aelfthrytha (talk) 00:11, 29 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Badimo page edit

I think you created the page for "Badimo"? If not, my apologies. I would like to query the use of the word as a name for the relevant traditional religion. Although I see it is given thus in the CIA World Factbook, I have to say that as a resident of Botswana, I cannot remember hearing this usage. The "Badimo" are the ancestors. There is a considerable literature about the meaning of the word and related words (medimo, Modimo etc.) See e.g. James Amanze's _African Traditional Religions and Culture in Botswana_. If you asked a traditionalist his religion he might say "badimo", but this would mean "the ancestors" rather as if someone might answer "the Lord". (There are no articles in Setswana.) In English the normal expression is "African Traditional Religion" or "traditional religion".

Could I suggest something like "Badimo is the Setswana term for the ancestors, considered as mediators, objects of veneration, etc. It has occasionally been used as a shorthand for Tswana traditional religion though this is not normal usage for the people concerned."???

By the way you're quite right about people who are e.g. Christians often also practising some aspects of tradition, but they wouldn't consider it exactly as following another religion. Aardwolf (talk) 17:37, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nice maps! edit

  Impresivo
Hello,

I was wondering if you had a map of the entire middle east? I'm trying to create a statistic for percent natural borders, ie Iraq has 37% natural borders (mountains, impassable rivers, etc). And I need a sample set of at least 30 countries and it would be nice to have them in one big map! Your maps are very clear and the political borders are nicely compared to geography. If you have the whole map of the middle east, I'd greatly appreciate a link. Or better yet, if your software can automatically compare the times that political borders parallel natural boundaries.....as in percent circumference?

Anything would be of help.

Thanks,

Orphaned non-free media (File:This is the Part Where You Pretend to Add Value.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading File:This is the Part Where You Pretend to Add Value.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:21, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion edit

Thank you very much for your maps They’re very very very interesting I'm geologist; I work for the environment project I need a "Maghreb Countries" map with those countries to gather: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. About the altitudes, I hope that you make them with your habituel scale and add two others maps with the grey and brown scale, for using it as a background to other maps. Scale meters edit

I left a comment on the South Korea map talk page regarding scale meters and I noticed you have the same problem on some of the other maps you've made. I like your work but I would prefer the scale meters to be such that you can use them for measurement, etc. For example, the Madagaskar map has a scale meter length of 250 km. While that is a nice round number, it's not very useful, because it uses quarter subdivision and nobody measures in 62.5 km increments (or 125 km increments for that matter). I'd correct them so that the smallest subdivision is 25, 50 or 100 km, depending on scale. Of course, on a larger scale map, you can use multiple or nested subdivisions. --88.192.19.110 (talk) 18:04, 7 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

first of all thank you for effort and work, I realized that you have many border mistakes in UAE topo map where you show the western borders within UAE all the way to Qatar borders. this section belongs to KSA since 1971, also, south eastern part of Egypt ( Halaieb and Shalateen) belongs to sudan not Egypt. i hope you edit those. thank you Roy Shrejmänn (talk) 22:26, 21 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
