Linking edit

According to WP:OVERLINK, "Items that would be familiar to most readers of the article, such as the names of major geographic features and locations, historical events, religions, languages, and common professions." The United States and Japan are major geograpic locations that most readers know of and therefore don't need to be linked. In addition, the reader can easily navigate to the U.S. article through the Maryland article. As for World War II and Pearl Harbor, I am undecided on the importance of the linking those terms. However, Sandy is a very experienced editor, and I would trust her judgement. Also, please do not link dates as it is against the Manual of Style, the accepted style guide of Wikipedia. Dabomb87 (talk) 00:04, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

India is another of those commonly known places that doesn't need to be linked. If readers really want to get to the India article, then they can use the search box or go through the Mumbai article. Dabomb87 (talk) 00:09, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
This is actually a rather controversial idea (what to link). I suggest you see the discussions at WT:OVERLINK, WT:MOSLINK, and make comments there. Dabomb87 (talk) 00:14, 21 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

MoS edits edit

Apropos this, we do not wikify dates anymore or demonyms (Indian) and names of countries any more. Please could you undo your edits? Thanks! =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

As you requested, I removed my edits, although I admit that to me this policy is a bit strange. Btw, I wouldn't take offense if you chose to remove my edits yourself. S h i v a (Visnu) (talk) 20:32, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
The policy is to avoid linking low value links since they are distracting to a user. I was about to log off for the day, and thought I'd inform you about the policy change so that you could undo it in other places if you done it there too. Cheers! =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:55, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

India edits edit

Its okay, although typically you would wait for input from more than one editor. I am invariant under co-ordinate transformations (talk) 01:57, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats a given, except my point is that the discussion had been open for 2-3 days and none of the edits significantly altered the article. It couldn't be helped if nobody else wished to comment - the principle person who raised the question was satisfied. S h i v a (Visnu) (talk) 02:00, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, even I also did not offend you but if you are offended someway I am sorry. By saying you manipulated the statement starting the debate I was just describing the events as they happened. This is just to give others a clear picture of what has happened instead of each one doing his own individual research. I have listed my points clearly 1 by 1.
Now, coming to the point of doing the edits. As I mentioned twice in my message, I never wanted this discussion/debate to get any kind of limelight. Reason: India page is one of most watched/edited/debated/vandalized/moved towards bias page for India project. Debates usually get out of hand and then get into RfC or mediation or arbitration. One live example is about the kannada telugu language debate currently going on and you can feel the heat there. So, my decision of going ahead with the edit was simple, keep it short and non-controversial. Also your objections had been taken care in some format (as seen from the statements I have posted today in green box). I had even provided multiple explanations for them. However, you seem to have taken this further to individual talk pages of f&f and nichalp. Fine, no qualms. Yes, incremental improvement is way of life and so is on WP.
Now coming to point that thread was open and accepted by KHP2 after which I pitched in. Well, till the thread gets archived automatically all threads are open. So I am not late but just on time.
I am no more editing the article and I am waiting for nichalp's response. I am civil and respect your gentleman nature too. Just hoping that this thread does not blow out of the roof and get into ugly processes like RfC or mediation. If you have any counter arguments to points I have laid down feel free to comment.
Also, consider channeling your energies to some of the child articles so that they can be even upgraded to higher classes. We need people who do that. FA articles are taken care automatically. --GPPande talk! 20:50, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Your reply is a bit strange. How does it accurately describe the events as they happened by accusing me of manipulating the statement? We were in the middle of the debate and my objections were not taken care of - I did not venture to think that KnowledgeHegemonyPart2 was okay with my edits until he said so. I simply asked User:Fowler&fowler and User:Nichalp to weigh in to help us resolve the points as it was obvious we were dead-locked. Why say "However, you seem to have taken this further to individual talk pages of f&f and nichalp." when you yourself say that the thread was is open until archived? I welcomed your participation in the debate even after KHP2 had agreed. My talk with him was 2-3 days old. I restored my edit based on KHP2's agreement and the elapse of a respectful amount of time - and when you had not commented yet. When you joined in later, I was only willing to work with you. But you overrode the whole discussion by putting your version in.
Please keep things in perspective - it is hardly useful to mention the Kannada/Telegu debate when at the same time, we were talking most productively and respectfully. There was no heat in our talk. I did not revert your edit nor was I rude to you - I didn't find your action respectful, but I would never go beyond discussion. So let's just focus on resolving this issue and improving the article with the help of others. S h i v a (Visnu) (talk) 21:17, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok now this is getting too long. I have already said that it was not my intention to offend you and have apologized if I have done so. What else do you expect? By saying, you went door to door asking more people to weigh in I meant that you were taking the thread to people who were other wise neutral/not interested. This is another way of escalating the things which I said I have been trying to avoid. The reference to language discussion was just an example. That has no relation with me coming in late. It is good you did not get into edit-war but all this surrounding discussion(on the individual talk pages) is also not pretty. As I have mentioned, I have listed down my points and your counter arguments are welcomed(which have not come yet). I would prefer if we get into business instead of this type of offended or respected thing. This type of discussion has no output. --GPPande talk! 07:52, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think "taking the thread to people who were other wise neutral/not interested" is natural if you and I are seemingly grid-locked, and I read that it is advised by WP:DR and WP:3O. I wanted to talk to you because you made a few comments and an edit that ignored and misrepresented what I was trying to do. This sort of thing is what usually causes problems. The "output" I hoped for was clearing up any misunderstandings between us. I can't honestly say I am satisfied this has happened, but I agree that we should wrap this up and move on. Hopefully in the near future our interactions will be more positive and devoid of misgivings. All the best, S h i v a (Visnu) (talk) 09:24, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Option 5 edit

Could I ask you to revise your option 5? The poll is for the infobox entry. Mentioning classical languages in the culture section can be dealt with later. I've also asked AreJay to look at it. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:57, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

If the question is limited to the infobox, then I clearly back Option 1. I do feel that Option 5 is helpful anyway. S h i v a (Visnu) (talk) 12:26, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kokar - I'll be glad to be of help. Don't be frustrated over your inability to edit certain articles - those restrictions will go away in a couple of days. I had to face the same thing 2-3 weeks ago. Others may disagree with you now and again, but you're an intelligent editor as anyone can see, so your contribution(s) will always be welcome. One thing to note - both India and Bengaluru are WP:FA, which means that there is a greater quality control over content. Read WP:WIAFA, so you'll know exactly how to edit the article. Re: Geography of India edit

It would be great if you could restore it to FA status again. Most of it is done. You can see some comments on Talk:Geography of India and Wikipedia:Featured article review/Geography of India/archive1. It needs the following:

  1. Better quality sources
  2. Tighter scoping: Sections such as soil, climate etc are not really geography
  3. SVG map: I'll see what can be done
  4. Basic copyediting.

Let me know if you get stuck. I'll review once we get this fixed. You can have a look at Climate of India as a good example of a contemporary example of an FA. =Nichalp «Talk»= 07:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Seems ok. I'll give you a pointer how encyclopedic articles are supposed to be written. This might explain why some of us are hard on the addition new content. (This is the ideal scenario, Remember!)
  1. When writing, we write the daughter articles first eg. History of India, Geography of India, Economy of India. We then get this to featured status.
  2. Now the lead section of these daughter articles are supposed to be copied verbatim to the parent article, India. In this way, we get a fully featured topic.
  3. So in this way, you might think of just cloning the climate lead section

Re: Your ArbCom Vote edit

Thanks for your interest in this year's ArbCom elections. Unfortunately, we were required to set a criteria for voters, and that was decided to be the following:

  • Voters must have a registered account that was created on or before November 1, 2008.
  • Voters must have made 150 edits to articles on that account on or before November 1, 2008.

According to an automatic check, which I confirmed by looking at your contribution history, you have not met the requirements. Either you have not made 150 edits to articles (these edits must be in the main namespace) or you did not make them before the deadline of 23:59:59 November 1, 2008 (UTC). I've indented your votes. If you believe I sent this message in error, and that you do meet the requirements, please let me know on my talk page. Thanks, ST47 (talk) 12:46, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi - thanks for the notice. I had registered on October 18, but misunderstood the second criteria. Thanks for making the correction, Shiva (Visnu) 17:50, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK nomination of British Indian passport edit

Hello! Your submission of British Indian passport at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! NuclearWarfare (Talk) 21:18, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re your query on my talk page - the passport itself is not an ideal RS for descriptive purposes, since the passport may have changed over time. You might get around that with a comment something like "Passports issued in the 1950s" or whatever.
I note though that you have uploaded a picture of the cover of the passport. I'm a little concerned that someone might be able to discern your name from that. I suggest you re-edit that so that no trace of your name remains. Gatoclass (talk) 05:59, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I can understand why the passport would be a symbol of colonialism, but I would like to know why it "mark[ed] its bearer as a lesser class of citizen." A lesser class in comparison to whom? Gatoclass (talk) 06:03, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think the passport itself is fine as a reference for the description section, provided you add a phrase mentioning the approximate date of the passport you are describing (nearest decade will do) just in case the passport was different at an earlier time. Re the "lesser class of citizen", it would be helpful if you added a few words describing exactly why the passport "mark[ed] its bearer" as such. What rights did bearers of other British passports have at the time that Indian passport holders did not? I think that should be made clear. Gatoclass (talk) 05:24, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the article of Álvaro Negredo, where you reverted my edits, with the subsequent message (i have this account, but also edit from time to time with the standard IP 217.129.67.28), i'll say the following:

Just because one indulges in the occasional (or habitual) use of caps and exclamation marks in their edit summaries, it does not necessarily make the edit "unconstructive" or "vandalic". Please be careful, i only want to help and contribute.

Unreferenced BLPs edit

Hello S h i v a (Visnu)! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 7 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 942 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Proposed deletion of Bipin Shrimali‎ edit

The article Bipin Shrimali‎ has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Sodabottle (talk) 08:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

You are now a Reviewer edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:39, 19 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

There should be a term for people like you that yearn for reverts to articles in Wikipedia!

Obsequious!? Maybe. Annoying, certainly! CrackDragon (talk) 03:45, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for being a little abusive the other night! Maybe not such a good idea making edits after coming in from the pub (especially when a little worse for wear!!) CrackDragon (talk) 10:16, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

No worries my friend - you were not "abusive." I deserved the sarcastic rebuke for mistaking your edit for vandalism anyway. Your reaction as a Wikipedian returning from a pub was better than what I had feared - that of a Dragon on crack. So we are good :) Shiva (Visnu) 16:54, 22 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
