Hi, thanks for your contributions to Cryptography. Most of the changes look good. A couple of them appear to be changes of US spellings to UK spellings. See WP:MOS for discussion of this issue. Such style changes have been the subject of "wars" in the past, so as I understand it, current practice is to stay with whichever spelling is already in the article (staying consistent within the article), unless the article is about a British topic in which case it's ok to switch everything to British spelling.

Also, it's generally best to discuss major changes to articles (like drastically chopping down the introductory paragraphs of the article, which the previous editors had done a lot of work on) on the article's talk page (Talk:Cryptography in this case). I can understand that the old version was long-winded but it had the purpose of showing the sweep of the subject. So I'm not sure the new version is an improvement; on the other hand, I'm used to the old version.

Anyway, as the blurb above says, welcome to Wikipedia. Do you work on crypto stuff?

I understand you are concerned about US and UK English. If making only the odd edit, I shan't change them. If I'm going through a whole article to improve it, I probably will. I am not familiar with all the niceties of the differences, and I'm bound to make additions and tweaks in UK English. When things look wrong to me, I will change them (ok, I know "color" is American, I can follow that - but punctuation, syntax, vocabulary and many spellings are different and I don't know them all). Then when I make a lot of changes, at least I know I leave an article looking consistent and hopefully easier to read for everyone than when I came to it. SCCC 19:27, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Gregorian chant

edit

Please reconsider your edits to the lede of Gregorian chant. This article has just been through a peer review and featured article candidacy, and the lede represents a careful balance of many Wikipedians' perspectives. Please do not unilaterally make significant changes to the article, which do not reflect the consensus achieved by those reviewers, without discussing it on the talk page and determining that a new consensus has been reached. I won't go into details here, but there are reasons behind including much of that information. I'll be glad to discuss them with you on the Gregorian chant talk page; please don't make significant revisions without discussing them. Peirigill 06:55, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am responding to your comment on the article's talk page, as requested. SCCC 19:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Spelling

edit

Really, please don't switch to UK spellings in articles which are written in non-UK English. There is no good reason for it, it will just insult people and put their backs up, and it's against policy. Thanks, Mak (talk) 15:45, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

As far as I am aware, I made no such changes to UK spellings when making adjustments today to Gregorian chant. It certainly wasn't my intention to. If I have, it is likely through ignorance - I really do not know all the differences between American and British English, nor do I think I should be expected to. I should be grateful if you would bear that in mind, and, if you are bothered by things I have done inadventently to quietly change them back, rather than to make somewhat aggressive comments here. I've just revisited the amendments I made. Nowhere did I make a spelling change in the Gregorian chant article at all, so I'm not sure why I deserve the rant:( SCCC 19:46, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
It wasn't meant to be a rant, it was in response to your comments above in which you say you will continue to change spellings if you feel like it (specifically where you wrote "If I'm going through a whole article to improve it, I probably will"). As long as you realise that it's not appreciated and will attempt not to do it, that's fine with me. Mak (talk) 19:55, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
