Old Adoption

I am informing you that my mentor ship requires restarting now that my account has been reopened again. Please may you reply?

ps, is it me or has wikipedia editing went a bit weird since my last usage of this account?

drt2012 (talk) 20:11, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Dannyboy, I am Ryan's friend Go Phightins!. Ryan is currently on a wiki-break and not actively editing. He asked me to point you to the new Visual Editor as a tool that you can use to help you edit more easily. If you need a mentor, look at Adopt-a-User for a list. Thanks, and happy editing. Go Phightins! 02:37, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Interview request: Your interactions with new editors

I'm contacting you about a study that I'm running with TheOriginalSoni exploring newcomer mentorship activities in Wikipedia. I'd like to ask you a few questions about your interactions with newcomers and to explore how a tool like WP:Snuggle might make your work easier. The interview and demo session will take 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much time we spend discussing things. If you're interested, let me know. If not, disregard this message and I won't bother you again.

Thanks for your consideration. --EpochFail (talkcontribs) 15:29, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Greetings

Per this, I thought you might be interested to know WP:WMF now exists. Best wishes. Biosthmors (talk) 10:29, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Uploading a Photo to a Wikipeia Article

How does one upload a photo to a Wikipedia article?Davidbena (talk) 19:18, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

My apologies Davidbena, I'm not frequently active around here. Was your question answered? If not, can you point me to the photo you would like to upload? Ryan Vesey 21:51, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

My question has not yet been answered, Ryan, so thanks for writing to me. The image that I would like to upload is seen here: http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/2447/bxkh.jpg The photo is of a stone-inscription discovered in Yemen in 1970. The picture was taken by Dr. Aviva Klein Franke during a visit to Yemen a few years ago. She has given me her written consent to post it in a Wikipedia article, entitled Kohen. I have transcribed the text on the stone, which you can see in a chart in the above article, under the sub-title "Destruction of the second Temple." Davidbena (talk) 22:52, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for the information. In order to add that content, you'll first need to make sure she will give you consent not only to add the image to the Wikipedia article, but to release it under one of these acceptable licenses. I suggest the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. The most important aspects of the license are explained in that link. If she doesn't want the image to be used outside of Wikipedia, or be freely used commercially, I'm afraid we can't accept the image. Once she agrees to that, you can upload it to Wikimedia Commons, our database of free media, using this link. An email must be sent showing proof of permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. A suggested template for this proof is available at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. Since you will have uploaded the image when the email is sent, include the URL of the image on Wikimedia commons. Once the email has been sent, add the template OTRS pending. Finally, you can put the image on the page you desire by adding the following wikicode wherever you want the image to appear on the page. I understand that this is a bit cumbersome, so here's a link to an IRC page where you can get real time assistance if you need it, just click connect. #wikipedia-en-help connect Good luck, Ryan Vesey 01:35, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, again, Ryan. Sounds complicated, but I'll go through the stages, one by one. Davidbena (talk) 08:33, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Would like your opinion on a Statistics table

Hi Ryan, I was wondering what your opinion is on the statistics table on the Johnny Manziel page. There isn't any kind of war going on, so this isn't a query posed in the heat of an editorial battle. I'm just wondering about its appropriateness given the fact that it may be different than stats tables on other American football players' pages. You can go to the talk page and look at the topic there.

To me, the table is good. I'm biased since I made it, but that's not necessarily the gold standard. It's not as I'd like it yet, since it's sortable...but the up/down sort arrows don't show up on it for some reason. Also, I couldn't figure out how to display the 2012 summary stats while leaving the historical detail in a collapsible table. So, technically, the 2012 portion needs work. But figuring out how to make it work right would be moot if it should go.

I like having all the stats available because his 2012 season was unparalleled for a college athlete. And I like having the 2013 stats to show how the season unfolds. Last year, all that detail wasn't called into question, but this year one editor raised the issue of keeping only summary stats. I'm curious what you think. Lemme know! -- BroJohnE (talk) 13:09, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, BroJohnE. I really don't know enough about the project to take part in that discussion. It seems like the talk page of the article isn't the best place for that discussion though. Wikipedia likes consistency, so the best spot for a discussion would be Wikipedia talk:WikiProject College football with a note left at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject American football pointing them to the discussion. Ryan Vesey 21:56, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Regarding your support !vote on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Trappist the monk

I completely agree with you Ryan. This is just another reason why I wish a few more userrights would be created; for maintenance tasks such as this when individuals show a clear need for a maintenance tool or two but don't require the entire sysop toolset. Just thought I would let you know.   Cheers, — -dainomite   06:15, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Re: AN/I

I resent the implications and the tone of your comment to my comment here. If you knew the full story, you would have known that Swartz did something absolutely illegal with the most noble of intentions, to open a pathway to readily-available free knowledge. That's all I meant to say, and that's where the similarities end. Cheers, Poeticbent talk 16:49, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

I've followed up on your comment at ANI. Your comment is a great example of what's wrong with ANI. Toddst1 (talk) 12:48, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

My comment is a great example of what's wrong with ANI? Your comment could very easily have stifled any discussion of BullRangifer. His misunderstanding of policy has the potential to do far more damage to the encyclopedia than the anonymous editor saying "stfu". Ryan Vesey 15:09, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

 • Toddst1: since you seem to refuse to reply to my attempt at discussion on your talk page I will attempt to address some issues here while this conversation is in progress.

Your flippant and ridiculing remarks are not very becoming to an administrator and I resent the attacks on myself. This appears to have started after, and possibly for support of BullRangifer having a go 'round on me and was advised to stay off my talk page, with his harassing and unfounded accusations. Why would you be stalking my talk page at that time?

Comments such as "BOOMERANG"1 in all capital letters,

"don't make shit up"2,
"waah"3,
"bs"4, and
"Problematic IP"5 where you also used the phrases
"epic WP:BATTLE" and
"filed a winge",

seem to be out-of-line for any editor as ad hominem, especially an administrator. Then after those ad hominem attack comments you came to my talk page and post threats using "Comment on content, not on other contributors or people."6 or it will get me blocked for something I posted on my talk page for a harassing fellow editor. My interpretation of this is to set up a follow-up to block another IP editor, namely mine, based on unfounded excuses for who knows what? I really don't want to open another ANI case or perhaps Arbcom (assuming you succeed in getting my account blocked)?

Perhaps your opinions being left out of the ANI discussions as an involved or COI editor would make the ANI case more to Wikipedia policy. 174.118.141.197 (talk) 15:41, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

 • I have no desire for my talk page to be transformed into a venue for this issue and am closing this discussion. Let the ANI discussion play out. Ryan Vesey 18:57, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

WLNI

While I do see where the anon removed the FCC source, I readded it fairly quickly (though my edit got "covered" by Nasnema). The other information was correct. There is still some confusion as to whether WLNI is simulcasting WFIR or not. I never got to speak with the anon about that because I had to deal with the personal attacks from Nasnema. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:40, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
