From this course, I’ve learned that hip-hop is just as diverse as any other music genre. This genre of music is usually given a bad rep, but theres so much more to it than the mainstream rap music we hear. There are hip-hop songs that empowers women, and there are hip-hop songs by gay rappers— which I was not aware since as most hip-hop songs I’m exposed to is hyper-masculine, aggressive, and belittles women. Before taking this class, I did not know hip-hop’s origin or any of its history. I’m glad to have learned that the founding father of hip-hop is DJ Kool Herc, and that the birthplace of hip-hop was 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. These facts add to the rich history of hip-hop, and it is humbling to know something as large as hip-hop started with a house party in the Bronx. The assignments in this course required me to exercise deliberate practice. Through these assignments, I learned that it is very important to know how to paraphrase without omitting important parts or rephrasing the author’s words too closely. These assignments also took a considerable amount of time, so it was very important to use time wisely and have them completed before 10:10AM. The book I chose for this class also took a considerable amount of time, but it was needed for my focus. The book I chose is called “The Spoken Word Revolution: Slam, hip hop and the Poetry of a New Generation.” The poems expressed voices that aren't usually heard in hip hop. I’d like my peers to know that hip hop isn't just what we constantly hear on the radio, but it is like poetry and a lifestyle for some. The book allowed me to see that underground hip-hop is so much more diverse. I would also want others to know that hip-hop wasn't built on negativity. Music’s content was ignoring poor black and latino kids in the 70’s, and hip hop was there escape, and there own language in a sense that it spoke up about their difficulties and their frustrations. Hip hop used to tell stories, and still does. Wikipedia editors could learn that hip hop didn't come from antagonistic, threatening black male outcasts who wanted to portray black culture as all about drugs, money and abuse of women. By knowing the truth about hip hop’s history, culture and its aesthetics, editors can understand there is so much more to hip hop that what is shown at face value. Hip hop makes our culture more rich and exiting, and learning more about it makes it a compelling genre to want to learn more about. The reason we should study the field of hip-hop history and culture now is because it is important to learn hip hop’s origin since as it is seen by some as rebellious and even dangerous. The things wikipedia editors could learn from hip hop are also the same reasons we should continue to study and explore the culture of hip hop today. Hip hop’s origin and why black and brown people were drawn to it in the first place would assist our society in studying hip hops culture. Once we know a piece of information, we always want to find out more. I don’t believe the course was lacking anything. Zotero was frustrating, and didn't turn out as I’d like because I didn't quiet grasp how it works. Since as we were instructed to utilize Zotero, i’d have liked us to spend more class time on it, or omit it since it wasn’t my favorite. I liked the we had time to interact with each other in class rather than everybody remaining complete strangers. From the cypher’s I liked that we got to hear a bit of everyone’s music style and thoughts on hip hop. The Foucault remixes were interesting and made us deeply think about what hip hop really is perceived to be. I’ve learned that systemic bias will always exist if we do not get ourselves involved into the change we want to see. Most of the editors on wikipedia are western white men, and not accurate representatives of what it means to be diverse. We cannot let all of our history be written by those who were mostly looking in and were not part of our struggle.
