County maps

Another easy state to knock out would be Delaware and it's three counties. I haven't checked so maybe it's already done. I have about 16 or 17 to go yet on the NC county nav boxes. NY locator

I saw you created the much-overdue NY locator map. I am trying to use it with {{Geobox Protected Area}} in Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge, but as you can see the dot won't cooperate. What am I (or the template) doing wrong? Daniel Case 05:33, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Illinois Parks

Hey guy. How are you coming with the dot maps for the state parks? I had someone removed the Kaskaskia River State Fish & Wildlife Area map today since there wasn't a dot on it. On the names, I am not sure. A move from & to and would be the best. I can tell the purple and blue apart with little problem. I thought I had answered the questions, but I guess that was it, I THOUGHT about it, haha. hi Ruhrfisch, you removed a couple of links I posted to a community board in Central Louisiana. Can you advise as to the proper way to provide this information? It's a non-profit board, and the only online community for this region. It doesn't compete with anything and it acts as a clearinghouse for all the other informational sources out there. Black Hawk War

I have a new request now for a map if you don't mind. We are going to be working on the Black Hawk War as you can see at User:IvoShandor/Black Hawk War. I was wondering, if you maybe could do some sort of map of both Illinois and Wisconsin and have dots on there for each battle, maybe a line going from site to site to show the process of the war. This is an article we are going to go for FA with sometime in the near future. Let me know what you think of this idea. I know that there is one map out there on the net you could base it off of if you wish. Another thing, would be to add a few dots to show towns of like some of the major cities involved and so on. Hi Ruhrfisch. Since I will be doing a lot of the research related to this project I thought I would jump in here, hope that's okay. Basically, at this point, I am still sorting through research trying to figure out what was what. The topics are obscure and referenced varied in their assertions, simple things such as nomenclature become problems. Once I figure out where I am going with this I will compile a list for you. I also plan to pour over some historical map collections. I am certain that the Illinois National Guard and U.S. Army have extensive historical map collections related to this conflict and it is likely that someone has utilized them to publish a map collection as I have seen with countless other conflicts.

In my view the map will consist of several major components.

• Battles, skirmishes and massacres.
• Major white settlements and forts.
• Major Native American settlements and forts/camps.
• Major wagon trails.
• Political boundaries associated with the time period.

The resource I used for the settlement dates lists from which county the counties were formed. It's on the PHMC site. I can't access it from work or I would pass it along. There are 120 State Parks because Maurice K. Goddard busted his hump. As for the title error I can only blame the keyboard of your computer! The letters must be misaligned. Looking at things to do for the Lycoming County list, I have found a few articles that need to be started, Plunketts Creek, (currently a redirect to the township), Mill Creek (Loyalsock Creek) and Williamsport and Elmira Railroad. Locator maps

I was looking at your newest maps and at Vermont specifically. On the New York map you included Lake Champlain, but it is not on the Vermont map. Can you add it to the map? VerruckteDan 12:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering if there was any specific reason you decided to go with a PNG instead of SVG format for Image:Colorado_Locator_Map.PNG. If it was in SVG, it would be able to scale in size better and colors, etc. can be changed easier. Is there a process I could follow to create a similar file in SVG format — wondering how you converted the coordinates, etc. into the PNG? The image itself looks very nice. You just keep rolling these maps out. Quick question about Arizona (and it will also apply to the Nevada map). Should Lake Mead be included? I'll try to not suggest the inclusion of any more lakes...as long as Lake Tahoe is on the CA/NV maps. VerruckteDan 18:07, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more Mill Creeks. Back in the old days, where there was a mill there was a creek, hence Mill Creek. We should have some more pictures of the state parks soon. Locator maps

Thanks for creating all of those locator maps of the states. (I think you missed Alaska, though. It might look funny in equirectangular projection.) I'm looking into creating {{Location map}} maps for the vast majority of states that don't already have them. Then, those maps can be used in all sorts of infoboxes, like cities and National Register of Historic Places properties as in {{Infobox nrhp}}.

Is it possible to easily find the latitude of the top and bottom of each map, and the longitude of the left and right sides of each map? I'm asking because the individual per-state location maps, as in {{Location map Minnesota}}, need to know the top/bottom latitudes and left/right longitudes so it can calculate where to put the dot. I've done it by inspection for the Minnesota and Vermont location maps, but if you're using a GIS program or using a source on the US Census website that lists the latitude/longitude, that would make it easier. If you can find this data easily, that would be great; otherwise, I can continue to do it by inspection. I'm not in any big hurry or anything, and there are 43 states to go, regardless. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 18:41, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Black Hawk War

Hey Ruhr. While researching for my second expansion of Attacks at Blue Mounds Fort I came across this article, "Uncovering the Story of Fort Blue Mounds." Page 5 has a great map that could be used as a reference point and possible model for our map, while not everything is marked on there, quite a lot is (since it's from a Wisconsin magazine it's a bit sparse on Illinois locations). What is missing can be supplemented from other maps, such as the historical map linked on the collaboration talk page. Check that out though, let me know what you think. We could do a couple different ones or just cut what we include. It seems to me the movements are important and the battles, maybe the main forts, rivers can just be drawn they don't have to be labeled as the article will provide such context probably. Ravensburg State Park

I have added my pics of Ravensburg to the commons and some to the main page. My pic of the dam shows some sunlight, but the water is very low. I like the high water in your pic and the sunlight in my pic. I wish we could have both. Sticking with the high water pic for now. What do you think? And you mention something about some other nav box, I guess is what it is called, that includes a pic of the park instead of the locator map. What's the deal with that? Geobox

Actually, Template:Geobox Protected Area is complete and used on a few articles. The IUCN information is part of the template. Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge is probably the best example of a US park using the template and I thinks its an improvement on the current Infobox template. The only outstanding issue I see is that the Geobox does not convert acres to square km, instead it converts them to hectares (also sq miles to sq km). VerruckteDan 23:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Say, I looked at the Kinzua Bridge State Park article and saw it had quite a bit in the way of images. I have some images here of the bridge before it was destroyed that I could upload and license freely, took them myself in 2001 I did, don't know how the quality will be since I have to scan them but I have them, and they're free, as in libre. St Lawrence County New York locator map

The St Lawrence County New York locator map Map of New York highlighting Saint Lawrence County.svg is noticeably different from all of the other New York county locator maps. See, for example, List of counties in New York. As one who is knowledgeable in maps, could you please take a look at it and let me know what should be done to make it the same as the others. Thanks. It's good to know that the DCNR pages are being improved upon and that maybe the List of PA stat parks and articles may be influencing the improvements. Thank you for recently warning me of my potential conflict of interest regarding my edits to the Geneva College article. It is true that I work for the institution, yet as you know from reading the COI guidlines this does not bar me from "participating in articles and discussion of articles where [I] have a conflict of interest." Rather, I "must be careful when editing in mainspace. Compliance with this guideline requires discussion of proposed edits on talk pages and avoiding controversial edits in mainspace." Thus far I have done my best to thoroughly discuss my edits and my rationale. My main conflict has been the use of photos (which were replaced with my personal photos) and the inclusion (and subsequent removal) of notable alumni of the college. I've been pretty busy IRL. I have been thinking about parks for GA. For now I am going to focus on Worlds End State Park for several reasons. The story of it's name is interesting, the history of the area is pretty interesting too. Also PA DCNR has a good bit of work about the geology of the park published. I am going to start working on it tonight. I will keep you informed about the progress. Thanks for suggesting Rickets Glen and Mont Alto as well. I will look into them as well. Boyd Big Tree Park

I couldn't find the coordinates/elevation for Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area on GNIS. I estimated the coordinates for now, but can you take a look and see if you have any look finding the data from GNIS? VerruckteDan 02:08, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

I think that I got the coordinates by eyeballing the park on google earth. I never found it on any map. Dincher 02:55, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

You can find it on the PennDOT Dauphin County map (which is linked on the park's article page). I could not find it in GNIS either - I will sometimes enter just the first part of the name, but couldn't find it under Boyd or Big Tree or Boyd Big Tree. Some other parks do not have GNIS entries either - Bucktail does not, nor does Allegheny Islands. I have had good results contacting the USGS, so I will let them know about these and would be glad to pass along any others we find. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 03:17, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

I just looked at the PennDOT map and the Google Earth photos and the dot looks like it is in the park. The dot has an elevation of about 920 feet (according to Google Earth). Sound good. And if you're contacting GNIS, let me ask you this. There is a listing for Buchanan's Birthplace as a Locale, but not Buchanan's Birthplace State Park as a park. Request for lots of maps

Although some places in Category:Unincorporated communities in Ohio have maps, most don't. Would you be able to create some of the standard "Image:OHMap-doton-townname.png" maps for at least some of them? Nyttend 19:50, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

(butting in here) It would probably be more convenient to use {{Infobox Settlement}}, which calls {{Location map}}, which in itself calls {{Location map Ohio}}. Using {{Location map}} takes an existing map image and superimposes a dot on it with a caption. That way, nobody has to upload extra maps. Thanks for the offer. I was planning on offering such tools to you back in (I think) around May, but I have since gotten rather distracted from Wikipedia and never got the opportunity to work out the details.

Unfortunately I've forgotten much of how the script works, so I think it may be better if I just directly offer you access to the User:AZPR account (I can email you the password). It's not actually that much special, as there were a bunch of things I wanted to do but never got around to doing. Also, I've never gotten that account approved yet as a bot (I think there was some part of the policy which said that semibots didn't have to be approved) ...

(The details: If I recall correctly, it directly sends all articles to edit mode and automatically opens up the PR script to save a bit of time, and it does some other more minor automatic things like edit summaries. There's also a function which uses a trick from WP:WPUS/T#Editing the wikitext of a page which opens up all of the actual peer review pages, inserts the little message, and then saves the page. I wanted to make it completely automated by just opening up all of the articles and running all of the reviews in a similar manner, but I'm afraid it would lag terribly)

I'm going to make a couple of changes to make the functions less esoteric, then impending your response I will send you the password.

Regarding the things to fix, I found a coding mistake which explains (1), fixed (2), possibly (haven't tested) fixed (3), and (5) not sure why that's happening.

I do not believe there is anything wrong with allowing two users two share an account, though it's probably a rare case so there's no wiki-policy I can think of that discusses the topic. Of course, I've never tried it before, so I don't know if a method like a dummy-edit is necessary. I don't think a log is necessary; the history log there should suffice, since with SATs and the like coming up this year for me I probably won't have much time available for helping out on the WP.

The ampersand problem has existed for a while, I believe that JavaScript doesn't recognize the ampersand (or its confusing the ampersand with all of the other ampersands that usually appear in the URL bar when editing a page .. don't remember which). The three tracts of land are so small (their total area is only 812 acres) that they literally do not show up if drawn to scale, so I put three red dots on the map at the three locations. The dots serve the purpose. They show where the tracts are. It's a shame they aren't bigger. (The tracts) I wonder why they have such small tracts, so far apart that are state forests. Comments on war

Yeah, I did, sorry I didn't respond. I had to separate myself a bit, I meant no offense, and I might add, thank you for your concern about my well-being following our natural disaster. Every one in my town was okay, albeit, a bit wet, you can check out the worst of the flooding in DeKalb, Illinois at this commons gallery, the river in those pictures is really a glorified creek, you can see what it looks like during normal time at the article Kishwaukee River. Other places were far worse off, though some around here did lose much, at least no one here was killed.

As for Black Hawk, I suspect you are correct, I am probably all worked up over nothing. Perhaps I will shoot him an email, after all, I am an alum, that should count for something, right? Ha! Anyway, I am in far better spirits and have spent time in the quiet solitude of my user space, as you can see from the message currently on my user page.

Some other things, saw the map, great background, so long as we get far enough north to include the Bad Axe River, especially at its confluence with the Mississippi. Iowa is really mostly unimportant, though I suspect Keokuk's Reserve, which I believe is located near or in present-day Keokuk, Iowa, might have a place on the map. I don't know if we need to go as far south in Illinois as the map does, it might be more beneficial, especially in the context of the mining region around Galena, to include more of Wisconsin than Illinois, just my take. DYK...that Cape Henlopen State Park in Sussex County has been a public land since 1682 when it was designated as such by William Penn. Geobox 2

Hello, this message is sent to you because you've shown some interest in the Geobox templates in past. There is now a new version (aka Geobox 2) which supersedes all older Geoboxes (aka Geobox 1). The major difference is there are no feature specific templates (Settlement, River, Mountain range etc.) but just one master template which can handle all type of data. There are a couple of new features and many new fields making the template much more versatile so now it can be used for virtually any geography related feature without the need to create a specific template.

The switch to Geoboxes 2.0 is highly recommended as the new template has a much more effective code, which renders faster than the old one (with much smaller pre-expand size, it can be one third to one fourth of the pre-expand size of Geoboxes 1). To convert aa page from Geobox 1 to Geobox 2, there are two ways:

• By changing the template header:

  {{Geobox|Settlement

  Although some field names have been changed in order to be unified, the old names are accepted too. For any settlement Geobox use {{Geobox|Settlement and set the settlement type (city, borough, town, village) in category field. Calling e.g. {{Geobox|City will work as well but it's not the recommended way (from technical reasons).
• By a semi-automated tool which reorders the field names in the Geobox 2 style and also renames the few changed field names.
