WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

2. Sasata (submissions)
3. Grapple X (submissions)
4. Casliber (submissions)
5. Muboshgu (submissions)
6. Miyagawa (submissions)
7. Ruby2010 (submissions)
8. Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

• The featured article award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for four featured articles in the final round.
• The good article award also goes to Grapple X (submissions), for 19 good articles in the second round.
• The list award goes to Muboshgu (submissions), for three featured lists in the final round.
• The topic award goes to Grapple X (submissions), for three good topics (with around 40 articles) in round 4.
• The did you know award goes to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), for well over 100 DYKs in the final round.
• The news award goes to ThaddeusB (submissions), for 10 in the news items in round 3.
• The picture award goes to Grandiose (submissions), for two featured pictures in round 2.
• The reviewer award goes to both Ruby2010 (submissions) (14 reviews in round 1) and Grandiose (submissions) (14 reviews in round 3).
• Finally, for achieving an incredible bonus point total in the final round, and for bringing the top-importance article frog to featured status, a biostar has been awarded to Cwmhiraeth (submissions).

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. Once Upon A Time

Thought I'd drop by and tell you that I've begun watching this series - I'm halfway through the third episode. Anyway, I was trying to cut down the plot summary of "The Thing You Love Most", and I wondered if a "background" section could be helpful, à la Twin Peaks. I don't appreciate being called a vandal and I can categorically say neither I nor my household have edited a wikipedia page, so please refrain from contacting me again about this.

I have no idea how to even edit a page, and being a medical student I do not have the time to "troll" a wiki page.

You are editing from an IP address rather than from a profile. Another person, who made the edit in question (which is vandalism), has done so using this same IP address—it's common for addresses to rotate through households dynamically, and the individual who was responsible for the edit is likely a subscriber to the same ISP as you. This is a relatively common event, and is covered in the notice at the bottom of your talk page ("Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an IP user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other IP users"). It might be worth creating an account to avoid this in future, it will also allow you to tailor your experience of the site more to your liking. Atonement awards list

Hey, I finally finished my draft of the Atonement awards list (it's only taken me a year and three months). I'm going to move it to the mainspace now, but just wanted to check it was okay to remove the awards from the main article and link to it? I feel really bad that you put in all that effort to place the awards in a table in the main article. I also managed to get the casting section for Emma done. Hey, hope you're well. As you saw, I finally finished Sense and Sensibility (2008 TV miniseries). It doesn't look too bad, although I kinda miss working on it. It may need a copy edit first, but I'd like to nominate it at GAN. I would assume an article on a literature character would have a reception section, similar to television or film characters. Although I've never really checked. I must also get back into completing Persuasion. Sweet. All three of those eps are great, though I'm especially fond of "Over There" because the writers did such a great job creating another world (zeppelins and alternate comic books? I'm there!) But alas, don't expect any real tête-à-têtes between the two Broyles (it didn't really occur to me til you mentioned it -- that would've been pretty epic! A missed opportunity.) LOL. I hadn't realized he's gone so long, though I'm not really surprised. The series doesn't always use its supporting characters the best (Nina comes to mind). The third season premiere is great BTW -- most of the season alternates between each universe so we get a more in depth look of each. Good creative decision, though Fox reportedly vetoed it at first. Hello, Ruby. I'm not sure if you remember me, but I helped you with a GA submission some time back. I checked on some of the Fringe articles, and your name popped up. Wow, you've been busy! You've done quite a lot of very nice work. Congratulations on all the featured articles and lists!

On an unrelated note, I'm bummed about Fringe going off the air after this season. I've really enjoyed the Orwellian storyline this year. Television just won't be the same without Walter.

"Over There" is the two-part second-season finale of the Fox science fiction drama series Fringe. Fringe's premise is based on the idea of two parallel universes, our own and the Other Side, which began to clash in 1985, after Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) stole the parallel universe version of his son, Peter, following his own son's death. The finale's narrative recounts what happens when Peter (Joshua Jackson) is taken back to the Other Side by his real father, dubbed "Walternate" (Noble). FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv, pictured) and Walter lead a team of former Cortexiphan test subjects to retrieve him, after discovering that Peter is an unwitting part of Walternate's plans to bring about the destruction of our universe using an ancient doomsday device. Part one aired on May 13, 2010 to an estimated 5.99 million viewers, while part two broadcast a week later to 5.68 million. Both episodes received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with critics lauding the subtle differences between each universe. The finale was selected for multiple 2010 "best of television" lists. I swear I had no idea you were planning to create this list; I just saw the link in your "WikiCup ideas" subpage after clicking on the "what links here" feature from this newly-created page (I happened to come across the list of songs for Rihanna and was inspired to create one for Apple). I did not intend to step on your toes. If you wish to "steal" a list from me, I was also planning to create something similar for the Scissor Sisters. If you are interested, you are more than welcome to work on the Apple list with me. Ditto! I don't do collaborations very often (usually because my interests can be rather narrow), but I agree they can make editing more enjoyable (and quicker!). Assuming this is successful at FLC, my next project is tentatively set for List of songs recorded by Dido, which I'd be more than happy to collaborate on (disregard of course if you're not really a fan of hers). Other potential ideas include this mess of an article, List of songs recorded by Florence and the Machine, and this Coldplay list. Both the Muse and Coldplay lists need a lot of work (and probably involve 1,000 songs). :/ Be warned that I don't have a ton of time to edit during the week due to graduate school, so many of these projects will be on the back-burner for a while. Fiona Apple songs

I see you are collecting sources for certain Fiona Apple songs. Since I am obsessed with her and her music, I might be interested in assisting with certain articles, if you are interested. We've worked well together on the list of songs, so I imagine we could do the same for articles... tag team and co-nominate. Again, just if you are interested. I'd be surprised if there was enough material for "Dull Tool", though I would love to be proven wrong. I'd be interested in helping with "Paper Bag" or more recent tracks. I've had "Criminal" on my watchlist for years, but still haven't gotten around to the expansion. WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader ( Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

• 12george1 (submissions) was also the first to score for an article, with the good article Hurricane Gordon (2000). Again, this is a repeat of last year!
• Buggie111 (submissions) was the first to score for a did you know, with Marquis Flowers.
• Spencer (submissions) was the first to score for an in the news, with 2013 Houphouët-Boigny stampede.
• Status (submissions) was the first to score for a featured list, with list of Billboard Social 50 number-one artists.
• Adam Cuerden (submissions) was the first to score for a featured picture, with File:Thure de Thulstrup - L. Prang and Co. - Battle of Gettysburg - Restoration by Adam Cuerden.jpg.

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

• Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
• Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
• HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

Hello Ruby2010,

I am writing this appeal in the hopes you may reconsider your seemingly strong conviction that some critical words about a theater performance Jenni Blong gave in 1998 be featured in the Wiki-page you created about her acting career. I suspect that your current perspective is that this is an issue of journalistic integrity or something. I am not a journalist or even a regular Wikipedia user so I'm sure you know a lot more about such things than me. But I did find a reference on the WIKIPEDIA:BLP page that I'd like to humbly ask you to consider:

PEOPLE WHO ARE RELATIVELY UNKNOWN Policy shortcut: WP:NPF "Many Wikipedia articles contain material on people who are not well known, even if they are notable enough for their own article. In such cases, exercise restraint and include only material relevant to the person's notability.... Material that may adversely affect a person's reputation should be treated with special care; in many jurisdictions, repeating a defamatory claim is actionable, and there are additional protections for subjects who are not public figures."

Ruby, even in light of the above guideline, I acknowledge that one could argue the criticism in question to be fair game, that it is not outright libelous or defamatory. But this review is of a production at a company that did not exist at all before this production and not long after it, and it was before Jenni's professional career even started, (with the exception of her cameo in "Cry-Baby"). Don't you think, from another perspective than yours, one could just as well argue the relative irrelevance of this 1998 non-paying theater production to Jenni's later professional career in film and television? After all, she has never been notable (or even professional) as a theater actress, this was not a notable (or professional) production, and the company and production are certainly not Wiki-notable in and of themselves. Mightn't this be reasonably considered an opportunity to "exercise restraint" ?

Ruby, Jenni Blong is my wife. She is not a big star or even a public figure. She is trying to make her way in a tough Hollywood business, and we count upon her career income to support ourselves and our four-year-old daughter. This weekend she was heartbroken and horrified to discover that if a producer or director was deciding whether to hire her and were to look her up on Wikipedia, before they even came to her actual professional resume they would be confronted with a condemning statement about an alleged lack of "emotional power", a statement which originated in a review not of her professional work, but of an obscure theater production from before she was even considered a professional, by herself or anyone else. I humbly ask you to reconsider if this need be considered an essential content in a concise encyclopedic summary of her notable professional career.

I have no intention to be slamming you personally or questioning your intentions or integrity, Ruby. I suspect you are an intelligent and fair-minded person who didn't appreciate someone vandalizing the page you diligently put together on Jenni. I apologize about that, by the way. I have never used Wikipedia before and I didn't really know anything about the policies or ettiquette of it. I was just reacting impulsively in an effort to protect my wife who was, and still is, heartbroken about it. In any case, my apologies for the Wiki-faux pas.

I also suspect you are at least a little bit a fan of her work, given that you took the time to create a page about her. But I understand Wikipedia is not a publicity engine. I don't think I'm asking you to show her favoritism. I simply and humbly ask: in consideration of the fact that the content of this page could effect Jenni's professional reputation, could you find your way to take another perspective on what is really "relevant to her notability", and perhaps be willing to exercise some "restraint" and "special care" in deciding what information about Jenni's professional career is truly essential and noteworthy enough to be posted?

TAFI

Hello, In the past few days, Today's Articles for Improvement has gone through many changes. We have modified the process for adding Nominations, which now uses a template/table format and requires only 3 supports for an article to be selected. There is now a Holding Area, where articles are kept for discussion before being selected for a particular date. The TAFI schedule now involves adding 10 articles weekly, chosen from a variety of topics. We now have an Accomplishments page where we will be highlighting our older TAFI articles which have now become quality articles on the Wikipedia. The Project is almost ready to hit the Main Page, where it will be occupying a section just below "Did you Know" section. Three article from the weekly batch of 7 will be displayed randomly at the main page, the format of which can be seen at the Main Page sandbox. There is also an ongoing discussion at the Main page talk over the final details before we can go forward with the Main Page. If you have any ideas to discuss with everyone else, please visit the TAFI Talk Page and join in on the ongoing discussions there. You are also invited to add new nominations, and comment and suport on the current ones at the Nominations page. You can also help by helping in the discussions at the Holding Area.
