Bering

edit

I noticed your talk on Munaus' page. Legally speaking, Bering was a Russian explorer, because at the time he held a commissioned Russian rank, was paid for by the Russian Crown, and any territorial acquisitions based on his discoveries were claimed by the Russian Tzar. In order to be granted a rank, Bering would have had to take the oath to the Tzar, in essence a citizenship oath. This aside from having Russian ships and Russian crews to accomplish all this, that required Bering to speak Russian! So whatever Google hits are generated, he was definitely Russian during the expeditions. To claim otherwise is to undermine claims of sovereignty to any territory based on his discoveries, even now in international law. I think the Russian Federation may hastily change its collective mind if anyone claimed that Bering made discoveries as a non-Russian subject.Crock81 (talk) 02:19, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
