John Maclean (politician)

I have started work on extending the article on John Maclean, the Scottish socialist, educator and leader of the Red Clydeside period. The article, when I first looked at it, was so brief that it glossed over important parts of his life and the chronology was pretty unclear in parts.

To do:

• 1916 trial and imprisonment
• 1922 trial and imprisonment
• add section on his opposition to WWI
• flesh out his involvement with the Comintern

Knock youself out! I've not had time to do much with it other than clarify/verify some points that I felt needed it and you're right, it really needs a lot of work. I've got an academic interest in Maclean so I'm perfectly happy nit-picking! :c) I'll try and add alternative references where possible just so it doesn't become single sourced - Milton's book is good but it is still a family biography and perhaps lacking in objectivity. --Steelwool (talk) 16:39, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm...I'm not familiar with the Crick work but I'll pick up a copy. Gallagher is somewhat unreliable as he had several political axes to grind regarding Maclean's work with the SLP, his relationship with Peter Petrov - Gallagher was writing during the 1930s when Petrov was in opposition to Stalin - and Maclean's refusal to join the CPGB - not only because he believed a Scottish party would be more effective but also because he felt the British party was compromised by Malone and Rothstein. The Bob Pitt (CPGB) article - while an utterly scurrilous piece of hack journalism - provides a decent summary of everything Gallacher says with some attempt to refer to PRO sources. The English article is currently a stub. There is a full article in French, which I intend to set to work on translating (possibly in abridged format)

Isaac Penington (Quaker)

This article is also a stub. Penington (from what I know of him) seems to be one of the more interesting characters among the early Friends. I will endeavour to find out more.

The Civilizing Process

This book had a strong influence on me when I was a student at the University of Bradford.The Wikipedia article is only a stub, and I would like to expand it.

I'm trying to stay platform and manufacturer neutral, but want to make sure this reads well enough to be understood by someone who knows nothing about the field.
