Summary

edit

Rimi Basu is a worldbeat singer and dancer born and raised in Maryland. An ex-medical school student who dropped out of her prestigious program and defied Indian-American societal expectations to run away to India and become a musician at age 22, she has since completed two music albums and toured around the world, performing and creating music. Trained in Indian classical music and dance from a young age, as well as an accomplished belly dancer, her live performances typically feature a unique combination of both music and dance.

Performing Arts Training

edit

Basu's interest in Indian music started from a young age, as she was trained in Indian classical music and dance and had a deep affinity for the Indian arts and entertainment. The daughter of Indian Immigrants-turned Washington bureaucrats from Calcutta (Kolkata), she grew up negotiating multiple selves: One who attended a Bengali Language School that her father founded in Washington DC and actively learned Indian classical music and dance, and another, who avidly listened to hip hop, R&B, and American pop with her Black, Asian, Latin, and White peers. These influences culminate in her music, which reflects her own multi-faceted upbringing and identity.

Her initial training in music in the USA was a juxtaposition of East and West; she learned Indian classical and folk music alongside singing in the prestigious Johns Hopkins University Peabody Choir and Howard Country Children's Chorus. Her training in Indian music spans multiple styles, including Indian classical, Bhajan and Kirtan, Rabindra Sangeet, and Nazrul Geeti. Later, she delved into performing popular Bollywood and Punjabi music through studying in India with several renowned musicians and pundits, including Ajoy Chakrobarty and Sanjay Chakroborty in Kolkata at the Srutinandan school.

Basu trained in Odissi, an Indian classical dance form, from the early age of 5 under Dr. Chitra Krishnamurti's Nrityalaya Dance Academy in Potomac, Maryland. After 14 years of training, she was awarded her "Ranga Pravesh" - the official dance certification in Odissi dance after presenting a 3-hour long performance at Robert E. Parilla Performing Arts Center in Maryland. Thereafter, Rimi began to develop her unique fusion style of Odissi, blending her skill in belly dance with traditional Indian classical dance, and performing as a resident artist at several venues, including L'Orange Bleu in New York City and Red Maple Lounge in Baltimore, MD.

Basu's most recent work has delved more into the genres of worldbeat, spiritual kirtan, and electronica. After receiving training in yoga and meditation from a number of institutions around the world, as well as initiation in Tantra Yoga from Shri Kali Ashram, she has performed and taught

Formal Education

edit

Basu completed her B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, where was a Pre-Medical student. Despite receiving admission and full scholarship for an MD/PhD program in 2008, Basu decided to pursue her passion in music and the media industry. In 2012, she completed her MBA at a top-ranked international business school, INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France. Her unique career path due to academic pressures from her family and society at odds with her own passions are key themes that arise frequently in her music and dance.
