Buddhism
editHi Richard- I reverted your change on Buddhism (you added the clause 'a Dharmic faith' to the intro). Not sure if you're familiar with how talk pages work, but if you take a look at the Talk:Buddhism page, you'll see that the definition of Buddhism used in the intro has long been a strongly debated topic, and as such we prefer to not change the definition in the lead section without first discussing it on the talk page. The idea of adding 'Dharmic faith' has come up before, I believe, and while it has some merit it has generally been avoided because there doesn't seem to be a great academic definition of what a Dharmic faith is (i.e., a definition of the term that has been articulated in books or journals that is widely accepted or used by the academic community), and as such it doesn't seem to add a lot to the reader's understanding of what Buddhism is, other than to associate it with Hinduism and Jainism. There are certainly similarities there that the article does (or should) bring out, as do related articles like Buddhism and Hinduism, but such associations need to be carefully considered because the overlapping terminology- which are often interpreted differently by different traditions- can be confusing for newcomers. If you're interested in the relationship between Buddhism and other religions, there are several articles (Buddhism and Hinduism, most notably) that could use some help listed in Category:Buddhism and other religions. --Clay Collier (talk) 03:04, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
