Many thanks - I've just been too busy to get those done, so I'm very pleased you've been able to complete them. The final part is to find the lightest background colours that are AAA against white text (it's not really sensible to use links with white text, so we can forget about those). After that, I suggest we think about finding a home for the tables in mainspace. Any thoughts on where's best? Pinging Andy as he might be able to advise. Important request for the visual improvement of Wikipedia

I wish I knew why the boxes I make, with infinite pains, always turn out so horrendously ugly. :-( Would you like to do something about the one at the top of my talkpage now? I mean, the stupid way the header presses up against the box ceiling, getting a headache. I'd also quite like to have a picture of an actual admin mop, instead of Mohkam — he's very cute, but most admins aren't — such as this one. But it's transparent, it looks dumb like that. I can't find one with a white background, or any background that's not the same as the box itself. But the picture thing isn't a big deal, Mohkam will do. Btw it would be nice if the box sat in the middle, instead of over to the left. (And what about accessibility?) Bishonen | talk 23:12, 2 August 2015 (UTC).

Nice try, bud, and top job with siding with someone who literally added content to the page in question and had the guts to say "This is what the policy says, obey it" seconds after he added the content. The issue is simple: the guidance on colour contrast needs to be applied to all namespaces on Wikipedia, because visually impaired editor and readers need to be able to read all of our content. When you changed This section is about the use of colors in articles (though the advice on contrast ratios is applicable more generally) to This section is about the use of colors in articles you are denying the need for that guidance outside of article space. Your edit summary (This was an edit by Pigs to support his argument at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2015 September 17 and demand his words be law. Doesn't apply at all.) is uncivil and makes it clear that you are not concerned with helping improve the encyclopedia, but merely attempting to settle some grudge that you carry. That is the definition of disruptive editing. Grow up and focus on the actual issue, which is accessibility. Discussion of quoteboxes at Talk:California Chrome. A legitimate question about WP:ACCESS in terms of the color contrast of the purple and green boxes (there is a second discussion over use of color at all, but that's for another time). Can you look at that discussion and the "neon" boxes in the article with an eye to suggesting a different hex color (i.e. light lavender, light green) that would be better in terms of accessibility? One of the other editors proposed some possibles, saying one was compliant, one was not. At the talk, I posted a link to the WP background colors, where I saw several shades that looked like they'd work (same purple and green "family," just much lighter shades) If I recall, you lent a hand on the alt text either here or at another of my FACs, and I know this is your area. I won't revert you if you want to just boldly lighten up those colors and comment at the talk page about it. Montanabw^(talk) 06:53, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

error handling in lua

Wondering if you might be able to chime in on a question I had about Lua error handling for wikidata calls. I'm hoping to find a way to test for a valid QID without showing the user an error message if it is invalid. Per your suggestion, I am diving into Lua and making some progress. My goal here is to make the gene infobox template completely driven by wikidata calls and to have it fail gracefully when data isn't as expected.Thanks Benjamin Good (talk) 20:42, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

@I9606: I'm glad you're making progress, Benjamin, and I've seen the same problems as you have. I must admit that I've tended not to use arbitrary access because it's expensive and because of the difficulty for the potential end-user in tracking down errors that could arise from Wikidata entries other than the one that's directly linked to the article. My approach to making a fully data-driven infobox is to start by making calls for all of the parameters that can exist in the related wikidata item. For example, I've been helping a friend of mine, Mike Peel, to automate {{infobox telescope}} and that is probably a decent example of how far you can get without arbitrary access. Once that's working, you can then decide whether it's reasonable to start fetching values indirectly from related items. Perhaps if you can explain to me where in the gene infobox you need to test for a valid QID, I might be able to see a workaround that doesn't rely on making the test explicitly? We are indeed already gathering content that is directly associated with the items in question (human genes). Unfortunately, data modeling arguments in wikidata resulted in a structure there that requires deeper access to get the required content. The basic semantic pattern there is gene->encodes->protein->hasInterestingProperties->InterestingData . For context, our group runs a bot that maintains the content in about 11,000 infoboxes that use the PBB template. For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PBB/382 . We really want to get away from dealing with data there via parsing and storing all of those templates. Instead we hope to replace all of them with an new 'infobox gene' template that works with wikidata. @Julialturner: has been the main developer here so far. She is working on the wikidata-driven version of that infobox, currently in this lua sandbox. The idea of developing a check on the veracity of a QID isn't necessarily fundamental, though it seemed like a good starting point. The point is to be able to safely deploy the new wikidata-driven infobox without the danger of lua errors appearing all over it when something goes wrong. --Benjamin Good (talk) 22:56, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

@I9606: Okay, tell me if I have this right. I think there is a gene called ARF6 which encodes a protein called ADP-ribosylation factor 6, even though they share the same en-Wikpedia article. If I look at d:Q14865053, the Wikidata entry for ARF6, it has a property called "encodes" (P688) and the value of that is the protein ADP-ribosylation factor 6, which is d:Q4653665 in Wikidata. You want to be sure that when you read the value of P688 of any gene like Q14865053, it returns a valid QID, so that you can "follow the chain"?

Looking at it using the arbitrary access call in Module:Wikidata:

• {{#invoke:Wikidata|getValueFromID|Q14865053|P688|FETCH_WIKIDATA}}
• gives ADP ribosylation factor 6[*] - which links to the Wikidata entry, Q4653665, because we don't have a separate article on en-wp.

Well, in Wikidata, the values are strongly-typed, and if you check the entry for "encodes" on Wikidata (d:Property:P688), you'll see that it has a data-type of "Item". That means that the only values you can enter for the property P688 are Wikidata items, i.e. the Wikidata page must already exist - and therefore have a valid QID - for anybody to be able to enter a value for that property (in fact it stores the QID internally and just displays the label as part of the interface). That's pretty close to a guarantee that when you read the what the gene encodes, it can only return a valid QID (or null if there's no 'encodes' entry). @Julialturner: should only need to use the call as it's written in Module:Wikidata, something like local claims = entity.claims[propertyID] // if claims then ... to deal with null values and then the value claims[1].mainsnak.datavalue.value["numeric-id"] will always be the QID (without the 'Q') of the protein that the gene encodes. Thats pretty much it. Assuming we have a valid starting point, catching potential null responses as we work up the graph to the data needed should probably do the trick. My initial approach of nesting wikidata module calls directly within the template rather than handling the logic in Lua was what lead us astray I guess. I'd still like to increase confidence that the initial id is valid, but I guess we just control that by where we deploy the template. Also want to extend the template so that it can either use the current page id / interwiki link as its starting point or accept a QID as a parameter such that it can be used to do things like show two gene boxes on one page as people sometimes want to do. • The Old Joint Stock Very nice in all respects. Pricey, but arguably worth it.
• The Wellington Good real ale pub. Doesn't do food.... but there appears to be a sign saying you can bring your own.
• The Sun on the Hill Looks dodgy in the photo, but very good according to the reviews.
• The Square Peg The other Weatherspoons in Birmingham. Looks completely awful.

BSAC (edits November 2015)

Hi RexxS, Thanks for the edit for the BSAC article. I have some questions and comments. Firstly, is it appropriate to have the following categories - “Cheshire West and Chester” and “Sport in Cheshire”? Secondly, I will add some detail about the affiliations with BOA and SAA at a later time to the “Recognition” section. I also have sections which I drafted in 2013 to add to the article that describe its structure and operation. Can you please watch the article to review what I add? Hi Cowdy, I don't think it's feasible to apply a category to BSAC for every county in England (as it's the NGB for all of them), so Cheshire shouldn't be a category for that reason. Its HQ is in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, so it does have some connection. I'll see if I can find a better category. ... On second thoughts, it already has Category:Organisations based in Cheshire, which is the correct link with Cheshire, so I've removed the other two as extraneous. I'm always more than happy with the work you do on diving organisations, so I'm unlikely to disagree with whatever you come up with. Nevertheless, the article is on my watchlist, so I'll review what you do anyway - you can be pretty certain that silence on my part can be treated as genuine approval!
