Color table

Just FYI, I expanded upon your color table. You're welcome to copy-paste it on to your table if you wish. See User:EvergreenFir/sandbox1. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 18:16, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Many thanks - I've just been too busy to get those done, so I'm very pleased you've been able to complete them. The final part is to find the lightest background colours that are AAA against white text (it's not really sensible to use links with white text, so we can forget about those). After that, I suggest we think about finding a home for the tables in mainspace. Any thoughts on where's best? Pinging Andy as he might be able to advise. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 01:18, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Table of WCAG-AAA compliant colour contrasts? Nice work, EvergreenFir. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:31, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Actually, now I think about it, your first instinct might be better. If it's in Wikipedia space, we don't have to worry about it being deleted on the grounds of not notable. It is OR, I guess. --RexxS (talk) 13:06, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
OK. We could transclude it there from a template, which can be used elsewhere too. And we could do with an additional column, combining the last three, as "darkest colour with any text". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:22, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Feel free to move it wherever. I am starting a table for white text now too. Just ping me or message me if you move it. Cheers! EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 19:21, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

You are more than welcome to edit it (boldly or otherwise). Yes, I think it would benefit from an explanation. I don't think I can get to it tonight, but you're welcome to add one if you have time. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 00:38, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Important request for the visual improvement of Wikipedia

I wish I knew why the boxes I make, with infinite pains, always turn out so horrendously ugly. :-( Would you like to do something about the one at the top of my talkpage now? I mean, the stupid way the header presses up against the box ceiling, getting a headache. I'd also quite like to have a picture of an actual admin mop, instead of Mohkam — he's very cute, but most admins aren't — such as this one. But it's transparent, it looks dumb like that. I can't find one with a white background, or any background that's not the same as the box itself. But the picture thing isn't a big deal, Mohkam will do. Btw it would be nice if the box sat in the middle, instead of over to the left. (And what about accessibility?) Bishonen | talk 23:12, 2 August 2015 (UTC).

I love the mop in an oval, as it might be in a sepia-tinted portrait of an ancestor! Feel free to round the corners of the box slightly, too. Bishonen | talk 23:44, 2 August 2015 (UTC).
Done. Is that prettier? A sepia background would be #704214, but the mop works best on a light background. --RexxS (talk) 00:14, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
Indeed. I meant sepia more in the spiritual/cultural sense, which the oval "portrait" already is. Very nice corners, thank you. Bishonen | talk 08:30, 3 August 2015 (UTC).
...tst, amateur! ;-) CassiantoTalk 19:58, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Cassianto, funnily enough I was coming here to ask RexxS about that. It looks nice, thank you, dino, but why does the change center the banner? How does it work? And if you would be so kind, how is it that I never understand anything any part of these things? I wonder if I might have been dropped on the head as a baby. Bishonen | talk 20:44, 4 August 2015 (UTC).
I'm no reptilian incarnate, but I could be of help. margin: 2px auto; is shorthand for margin-top: 2px; margin-bottom: 2px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;. "auto" means that the margin expands to occupy the available area; when both horizontal margins are set to "auto", they share the remaining width equally. ROa-- err, meow. Alakzi (talk) 21:04, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Auto? Auto! [Says "auto" ten times, hoping to fix it in her brain.] That's actually brilliant. Thank you, Alakzi. Bishonen | talk 21:26, 4 August 2015 (UTC).

Manifold (scuba)

I have just found this article and done a bit of cleaning up. When you are at a loss for anything better to do, take a look and let me know if I have missed anything important. It is difficult to find sources, but on the other hand most of the information is verifiable by inspection, or in the words of Al Capp "as any fool kin plainly see", so have not spent much effort on it, and will see if anyone challenges specifics. Cheers, • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:15, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Peter, I saw you working on it as it popped up on my watchlist. I have a copy of "GUE fundamentals of better diving" which might have some source material about manifolds, so I'll dig it out and see what I can find later this week. Where do you think is the best place to put that info about shutdown drills as GUE will probably source that? --RexxS (talk) 20:30, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

You've made a good job of that, Peter. I particularly liked the the bit about monofins being unsuitable :) - what we really need for this sort of article is a decent video. Hi, little dino, see what a cool "userbox barnstar" DHeyward has put on my page? Do you think you could improve the layout, as between that and the Fairybread Barnstar? And I'd like it to be visible that it was awarded, not self-created, please. I just added a caption to the hamsters, in the hope that you can do something similar for the userbox barnstar. Your recent attempt at calling me on "disruptive" editing

Nice try, bud, and top job with siding with someone who literally added content to the page in question and had the guts to say "This is what the policy says, obey it" seconds after he added the content. You also assume that my edits are based on grudges - you assume wrong. Alex|The|Whovian 02:28, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

The issue is simple: the guidance on colour contrast needs to be applied to all namespaces on Wikipedia, because visually impaired editor and readers need to be able to read all of our content. When you changed This section is about the use of colors in articles (though the advice on contrast ratios is applicable more generally) to This section is about the use of colors in articles you are denying the need for that guidance outside of article space. Your edit summary (This was an edit by Pigs to support his argument at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2015 September 17 and demand his words be law. Doesn't apply at all.) is uncivil and makes it clear that you are not concerned with helping improve the encyclopedia, but merely attempting to settle some grudge that you carry. That is the definition of disruptive editing. Grow up and focus on the actual issue, which is accessibility. If you have any useful contribution to make, there is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Accessibility #Colour. --RexxS (talk) 03:32, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Speaking of that

Discussion of quoteboxes at Talk:California Chrome. A legitimate question about WP:ACCESS in terms of the color contrast of the purple and green boxes (there is a second discussion over use of color at all, but that's for another time). Can you look at that discussion and the "neon" boxes in the article with an eye to suggesting a different hex color (i.e. light lavender, light green) that would be better in terms of accessibility? One of the other editors proposed some possibles, saying one was compliant, one was not. At the talk, I posted a link to the WP background colors, where I saw several shades that looked like they'd work (same purple and green "family," just much lighter shades) If I recall, you lent a hand on the alt text either here or at another of my FACs, and I know this is your area. I won't revert you if you want to just boldly lighten up those colors and comment at the talk page about it. Montanabw(talk) 06:53, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

I won't alter anything while discussion is on-going, although it does look like the issues have been well thrashed-out already. While I have a preference for default colour schemes (it makes my life easier), I've suggested a compromise and offered examples on the talk page. I hope you find that helpful. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 23:17, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Birmingham meetup

See you there? Well... not here... this photo is from a pub in Manchester... but that's cos there haven't been enough meetups in Birmingham.
Hi there! Did you know that there will be a meetup in Birmingham on the 15th of November?

There hasn't been many meetups in Birmingham. I will be passing through on the 15th of November, so I thought I would see who fancied meeting up, while I'm in the area. I'm leaving this message on your talk page because you have previously expressed an interest in a meetup in Birmingham or Coventry.

error handling in lua

Wondering if you might be able to chime in on a question I had about Lua error handling for wikidata calls. I'm hoping to find a way to test for a valid QID without showing the user an error message if it is invalid. Per your suggestion, I am diving into Lua and making some progress. My goal here is to make the gene infobox template completely driven by wikidata calls and to have it fail gracefully when data isn't as expected. Thanks Benjamin Good (talk) 20:42, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

@I9606: I'm glad you're making progress, Benjamin, and I've seen the same problems as you have. I must admit that I've tended not to use arbitrary access because it's expensive and because of the difficulty for the potential end-user in tracking down errors that could arise from Wikidata entries other than the one that's directly linked to the article. My approach to making a fully data-driven infobox is to start by making calls for all of the parameters that can exist in the related wikidata item. For example, I've been helping a friend of mine, Mike Peel, to automate {{infobox telescope}} and that is probably a decent example of how far you can get without arbitrary access. Once that's working, you can then decide whether it's reasonable to start fetching values indirectly from related items. Perhaps if you can explain to me where in the gene infobox you need to test for a valid QID, I might be able to see a workaround that doesn't rely on making the test explicitly? Cheers --RexxS (talk) 21:43, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
We are indeed already gathering content that is directly associated with the items in question (human genes). Unfortunately, data modeling arguments in wikidata resulted in a structure there that requires deeper access to get the required content. The basic semantic pattern there is gene->encodes->protein->hasInterestingProperties->InterestingData . For context, our group runs a bot that maintains the content in about 11,000 infoboxes that use the PBB template. For example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:PBB/382 . We really want to get away from dealing with data there via parsing and storing all of those templates. Instead we hope to replace all of them with an new 'infobox gene' template that works with wikidata. @Julialturner: has been the main developer here so far. She is working on the wikidata-driven version of that infobox, currently in this lua sandbox. The idea of developing a check on the veracity of a QID isn't necessarily fundamental, though it seemed like a good starting point. The point is to be able to safely deploy the new wikidata-driven infobox without the danger of lua errors appearing all over it when something goes wrong. --Benjamin Good (talk) 22:56, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
@I9606: Okay, tell me if I have this right. I think there is a gene called ARF6 which encodes a protein called ADP-ribosylation factor 6, even though they share the same en-Wikpedia article. If I look at d:Q14865053, the Wikidata entry for ARF6, it has a property called "encodes" (P688) and the value of that is the protein ADP-ribosylation factor 6, which is d:Q4653665 in Wikidata. You want to be sure that when you read the value of P688 of any gene like Q14865053, it returns a valid QID, so that you can "follow the chain"?
Looking at it using the arbitrary access call in Module:Wikidata:
  • {{#invoke:Wikidata|getValueFromID|Q14865053|P688|FETCH_WIKIDATA}}
  • gives ADP ribosylation factor 6[*] - which links to the Wikidata entry, Q4653665, because we don't have a separate article on en-wp.
Well, in Wikidata, the values are strongly-typed, and if you check the entry for "encodes" on Wikidata (d:Property:P688), you'll see that it has a data-type of "Item". That means that the only values you can enter for the property P688 are Wikidata items, i.e. the Wikidata page must already exist - and therefore have a valid QID - for anybody to be able to enter a value for that property (in fact it stores the QID internally and just displays the label as part of the interface). That's pretty close to a guarantee that when you read the what the gene encodes, it can only return a valid QID (or null if there's no 'encodes' entry). @Julialturner: should only need to use the call as it's written in Module:Wikidata, something like local claims = entity.claims[propertyID] // if claims then ... to deal with null values and then the value claims[1].mainsnak.datavalue.value["numeric-id"] will always be the QID (without the 'Q') of the protein that the gene encodes. Let me know if that doesn't do what you want. --RexxS (talk) 15:33, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Thats pretty much it. Assuming we have a valid starting point, catching potential null responses as we work up the graph to the data needed should probably do the trick. My initial approach of nesting wikidata module calls directly within the template rather than handling the logic in Lua was what lead us astray I guess. I'd still like to increase confidence that the initial id is valid, but I guess we just control that by where we deploy the template. Also want to extend the template so that it can either use the current page id / interwiki link as its starting point or accept a QID as a parameter such that it can be used to do things like show two gene boxes on one page as people sometimes want to do. Should be possible. Thanks again, I owe you another   --Benjamin Good (talk) 16:30, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Sunday 15th Nov

Hi RexxS,

I will be driving up the M5 and M6 to Manchester on Sunday the 15th of November. I'm considering organising a Wikimeet somewhere vaguely along the route, like Birmingham or the Black Country.

Does this sound like a good idea? Any suggestions for a venue? Will you be around on that day?

Yaris678 (talk) 11:11, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Hey Yaris, I'll just about be back from a holiday by the 15th of November, so I'll probably be up for a wikimeet. Andy has been talking about organising a meetup sometime soon, so perhaps we can fix on that date? It's possible to park in Birmingham City Centre on Sundays without too much problem, so perhaps we could use a venue like The Briar Rose, which is near to New St Station for anybody travelling in by train? If you fancy a taste of the Black Country, there's always The Pie Factory in Tipton, not too far from M5 J1/M6 J9. --RexxS (talk) 15:41, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
The Pie Factory looks awesome! Do you think we'd be able to attract a decent crowd there? If not, then I'm happy to go with central Birmingham.
Here's a thought... @Mike Peel:@Bazonka:@HJ Mitchell: You're also regular wikimeeters - is the Pie Factory sufficiently awesome to attract you to Tipton?
Yaris678 (talk) 16:16, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
I doubt that anywhere in the West Midlands will attract a crowd, decent or otherwise, but that's nothing to worry about. Let's see if there's any interest for one or the other. --RexxS (talk) 17:12, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
Happy to met you on the 15th. If we're going to try for a crowd, it needs to be somewhere more central and accessible by public transport. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:10, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
Consider me interested but it's unlikely I'll be able to make it. @Yaris678:, how far down the M5 are you starting from? Ping me off-wiki if you want. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:31, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
Same here. I doubt if I'll be there, but I'm not ruling it out. There'll probably also be a Liverpool meetup the following weekend. Oh, and for those of you who haven't heard, we have a baby on the way in the new year, so I am going to have to step down from arranging the meetups in the north - I'm just not going to be able to commit to it. Bazonka (talk) 07:59, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
I would definitely be interested, but I'm in the wrong country at the time (it's the first day of the FDC deliberations!). Sorry! Mike Peel (talk) 08:04, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

OK. Looking like central Birmingham is the way forward. Any rise on The Briar Rose? A brief survey with beerintheevening revealed:

  • The Old Joint Stock Very nice in all respects. Pricey, but arguably worth it.
  • The Wellington Good real ale pub. Doesn't do food.... but there appears to be a sign saying you can bring your own.
  • The Sun on the Hill Looks dodgy in the photo, but very good according to the reviews.
  • The Square Peg The other Weatherspoons in Birmingham. Looks completely awful.

So possibly the Sun of the Hill is the best option... but I will bow to the experience of a local. Yaris678 (talk) 08:19, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

None of the Weathrespoons pubs mentioned are that good (though the SP is the laregst pub on your list). The OJS has plenty of room, which is obviously an advantage. The Wellington has the best beer. I'll also throw the Old Contemptibles into the mix (central, good food, good beer). Also The Post Office Vaults, which has a great beer choice, but can be cramped. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:12, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Good point about having room. Most of the pubs look like they will be packed. Maybe the Old Joint Stock is the best option. Yaris678 (talk) 20:49, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

I'm just back from spending some time diving (for a change), but I'll try to catch up with the article soon. I've put it on my watchlist anyway. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 20:03, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
The best of all possible reasons for not being busy on Wikipedia. I trust you had some good dives? Did you see anything particularly interesting? Cheers • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 10:53, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Something funny on my talk page

Hi there RexxS! for some reason the table of contents on my user talk page has recently started displaying as double spaced. The same phenomenon is also happening on User talk:Casliber, from whence I copied the mark-up. Perhaps you'd like to have a look at this and see if you can spot what's wrong, if you have the time! Thank you, -- Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 18:18, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Kind aquatic dino dive over and fix homely appearance of Casliber support at User:Bishzilla/Vote ACE 2015? Place image better? Note also request for artwork at support Drmies — Rex very clever images and poetry, can he also draw? (Darwinfish has posted request for kissyface portrait to Dave Souza also. Must cast nets wide!) bishzilla ROARR!! 11:55, 17 November 2015 (UTC).

Okey, dino can draw - you remember? Not great, though, arms too short to hold crayon properly. --T-RexxS (rawr) 15:30, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Neutral buoyancy pool--Craigboy (talk) 10:47, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Nice overview, Craig. I've put it on my watchlist. Do you think it might be developed as in Wikipedia:Summary style, to be the parent article for each of the (potential) pool articles? using {{main}} templates according to the advice at Wikipedia:Summary style #Levels of desired details? --RexxS (talk) 22:52, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you

Before I go on to other things, I wanted to drop a note of appreciation for the input and information regarding security on the Internet. Personally? I have been "out-of-the-loop" for a few years, and I very much appreciate the refresher course, and current knowledge you've shared. The links and information are invaluable. New Template

Hi RexxS, I'm working on a new Navbox template, Template:Yuru-chara, to assist navigation between articles relating to Japanese mascot characters.
If you have a spare couple of minutes, I'd appreciate if you had a quick look over it, and let me know if anything needs fixing. Thanks in advance for any assistance & advice. - Ryk72 'c.s.n.s.' 15:06, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. BSAC (edits November 2015)

Hi RexxS, Thanks for the edit for the BSAC article. I have some questions and comments. Firstly, is it appropriate to have the following categories - “Cheshire West and Chester” and “Sport in Cheshire”? Secondly, I will add some detail about the affiliations with BOA and SAA at a later time to the “Recognition” section. I also have sections which I drafted in 2013 to add to the article that describe its structure and operation. Can you please watch the article to review what I add? If you wish to reply, please do it here as I am now watching this page. Regards Cowdy001 (talk) 19:09, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Cowdy, I don't think it's feasible to apply a category to BSAC for every county in England (as it's the NGB for all of them), so Cheshire shouldn't be a category for that reason. Its HQ is in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, so it does have some connection. I'll see if I can find a better category. ... On second thoughts, it already has Category:Organisations based in Cheshire, which is the correct link with Cheshire, so I've removed the other two as extraneous. I'm always more than happy with the work you do on diving organisations, so I'm unlikely to disagree with whatever you come up with. Nevertheless, the article is on my watchlist, so I'll review what you do anyway - you can be pretty certain that silence on my part can be treated as genuine approval! Cheers --RexxS (talk) 19:58, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
