December 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that the username you have chosen, "Revival Heritage", seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of something other than yourself. Please note that you may not edit on behalf of a company, group, institution, product, or website, and Wikipedia does not allow usernames that are promotional or have the appearance of shared use. If you are willing to use a personal account, please take a moment to create a new account or request a username change that represents only yourself as an individual. You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and remember that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Altered Walter (talk) 15:22, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy.  You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose.

If your username doesn't represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. If you prefer to be unblocked for the purpose of changing your username to a username which complies with our username policy, so that your contributions with this username are recorded as contributions of your new username and rather than creating a new account, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice instead. Thank you. • I don't know what you mean by saying that you "have been stopped every step of the way", as the article you wrote is still there, with only a few small edits by other editors.. However, to help you, I am posting a (somewhat belated) welcome message, with links to various pages that may help. Don't try to read all of it before you edit, as there is far too much to take in. However, do look at the pages which seem most relevant to your needs, and come back to look at others when they become relevant. Also, please feel welcome to contact me on my talk page with any questions. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:25, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • I have seen your message on my talk page, and I fully sympathise. In my opinion Wikipedia has far too many pages of policies, guidelines, etc etc, and I remember when I started here I found it hopelessly bewildering, as you do. It was much better in the early days of Wikipedia, but gradually more and more unnecessary details have been added, in a process known as "instruction creep". It does, in fact, get much easier once you have a bit of experience, partly because you learn how to find your way around better, and partly because you learn which bits to take notice of, and which bits are total crap that you can ignore. Wikipedia:Changing username is one of the less helpful of those pages too, in my opinion. There is, in fact, a link near the bottom of the page telling you where to go to actually do something, but you seem to be expected to wade through the whole page before you get there. I will try to help you out.
  • Unfortunately, I have discovered that the new name you suggested, Historian Jack, already exists. The user with that name made only one edit, which has been deleted, and that was five years ago, so it may be possible to get permission to take over the name, but I am not sure. If you want to, you can go to Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations and make a request to be allowed to take over the name, which may or may not be accepted. However, unless you are really set on that name, I suggest it's easier to choose another one to avoid any problems. A quick way to check if a username already exists is to try going to the corresponding talk page. If, for example, you try going to User talk:New historian Jack, you will see a red message saying User account "New historian Jack" is not registered, so you know that the name is available.
  • Assuming you choose a new name that has not already been used, you need to go to Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple. Follow the instructions given in the section headed "Instructions", starting at point number 4. Where it says "Add a reason for the change", I suggest something like "I have been told that my present name is unacceptable as it represents a web site."
  • As I have already said, I do sympathise with you over the frustrating experience you have been undergoing, but I hope you won't be put off contributing, and I hope things will be better for you from now on. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:48, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia just isn't user friendly - thanks for help and your time - sorry I don't have time to learn this huge new language and format not used anywhere else on the web.. edit

Many thanks JamesBWatson I have read your instructions to help me and do appreciate your time. Unfortunately I have just about given up. I had intended uploading hundreds of articles about lost architecture in the UK that is rarely acknowledged (with it being long gone), but Wikipedia is just too user unfriendly. No doubt this is for legal reasons - every single piece of advice that can be given to a user HAS to be given otherwise there could be problems down the line. In effect, its like turning small print into normal size print - just impossible to find the bit you need. My image I uploaded is due to disappear any day now as I can't access it and my first ever article will be fairly pointless without an illustration. All because I CANNOT access it again to tell Wikipedia for the second time that I own it and it is too old for anyone to have copyright on it etc etc... Too stresssful, makes me feel like I've done something wrong... Wikipedia PLEASE get in a WEB DESIGNER like 99% of other web sites I KNOW IT CAN BE SIMPLIFIED!!! Many thanks for your time Not sure if I will be able to log in again to read any reply if I am shut down.. (even this last bit where I am supposed to put lots of symbols ...
