John Plagis

I'm going to the British Library tomorrow and will report back on what, if anything, I can get access to in The Rhodesia Herald. The BL's website implies that the paper can't be accessed at the moment, pending the transition from paper copies to digital ones, but I'll interrogate a library assistant and take it from there. I should mention that The Rhodesia Herald isn't the only Rhodesian paper that could help us out regarding Plagis—The Chronicle of Bulawayo could help too as might the Salisbury Sunday Mail, both of which the BL has (according to the website). I'm glad to say the BL has got The Rhodesia Herald for 1974 on microfiche. I have ordered it for next Wednesday and will report back. It amuses me to be using microfilm at the BL because in the 1970s when it was regarded as high-tech stuff I was partly responsible for specing and ordering a particularly advanced microfilm camera for the BL Newspaper Library (now closed) at Colindale, and there is every chance that the pages I'll be looking at next week were scanned on that very device. – Tim riley talk 13:13, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

AFC Kingston

Moocamp isn't a reliable source but WISA is then? How does that work then? The article is clearly written by an AFC fan, there's not a single thing about the reaction of MK Dons and as much as everyone likes to ignore, yes, the fans do consider themselves as the true Dons and do not consider AFC a continuation of Wimbledon FC (despite whatever your POV might be). Also removing Guardian and BBC News links is a bit unfair do you not think? I know AFC are very touchy about their claimed origins but the fact are there's two sides tot he argument. I did not remove any BBC or Guardian links. Check the article again. I moved almost all of the information you added to the article to other parts where it was more relevant, and tidied the references you added as sources. The only thing you added that I actually took out is the thing about Wimbledon F.C. fans who stuck with the original team referring to AFC Wimbledon as "AFC Kingston". This was partly because the only source provided was Moocamp, which is of dubious reliability because it is a self-published online blog (see wp:sps), but actually mostly because the passage you added it to was discussing the immediate aftermath of AFC Wimbledon being formed in 2002. There may well have been Wimbledon F.C. fans at the time who referred to the new club as AFC Kingston but to say fans now do so is not relevant to that section. I'm not an AFC fan, incidentally. —Cliftonian (talk) 15:34, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

The article overall is still very one-sided, makes out the AFC and WISA to be some kind of saviour when in fact they were part of the problem. MKD may not be great and whole situation stinks, but to say it was all Milton Keynes' fault is unfair. It didn't set a precedent either, just 8 years before Livingston FC moved in 1995, previously known as Meadowbank Thistle Abcmaxx (talk) 15:45, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

We had a section in the article before discussing the cases of Livingston and the other 1990s relocation in Scotland, that of Clyde F.C., who moved from Glasgow to Cumbernauld in 1994. I wrote it. It was taken out a couple of years ago by an IP who deemed it irrelevant to the article's immediate scope. Perhaps we can look at reintegrating it in a shorter form. Thank you for the information you added to the article earlier as I do think it is an improvement. Peer review – or not

I've been meaning to ask you this for ages, but kept forgetting. Our exchange about the Keswick PR has jogged my memory. I don't think you generally take your articles to peer review before going to FAC, and I wonder why that is. To me, PR is a much more relaxed and less relentlessly spotlit place to have one's prose picked over, so that with any luck one can then take the finished article to FAC and see it through without too much aggro. There's no particular reason; just habit really. I have always done it a certain way—DYK, GA, then FA. But I think there is merit to what you say so I think next time I will adopt the PR route. Could I ask of your opinion on this?

Hi mate, I thought I would write to you on here since this is a Wikipedia errand. We're debating at the Sweden task force how to display domestic and European cup results from seasons that progress from autumn to spring in a season article that entails a calender year. I started the discussion since I dislike how for example we display results from 2013–14 Svenska Cupen in the same infobox as we display results from 2014–15 UEFA Champions League at 2014 Malmö FF season just to mention an example, the situation is similar at "List of Club seasons" articles and "Year X in Swedish football" articles. Unfortunately not many other countries have the same season format, so it is difficult to find a good reference point. What's your take on this? Thought I'd ask you since you always have a very rational approach to things like this. --Reckless182 (talk) 21:46, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jakebarrington, thank you for your message. The article in question has for a long time been plagued by the tendency of uninformed drive-by contributors to change the spelling of "artefact" to the American "artifact". This is easily reverted every time, it is true, but it wastes everybody's time and wastes space on the project's servers. I added an edit notice to the page explicitly asking people to stop doing this but it seems this is not enough as the spelling has still been changed repeatedly. This is why I put the messages in the source code. I appreciate your message and act of good faith in reverting my edit but I disagree with your assertion that the messages in the source code detract from the article's quality (ordinary readers will not even be aware of them) and so am reinstating them. Small note - I wasn't disputing the fact that the chant is sung, but it's purpose is only to anger and tease the opposition, MKD fans are quite well known for being inappropriate with their chants playing on the "hated team" reputation. It's definitely not an endorsement of what happened though, as the previous guy suggested. I think with all the debate and work and long discussion into making the article as objective and neutral as possible I didn't want to allow such statements as "MKD fans openly embrace the franchising of the team" Abcmaxx (talk) 11:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Don't worry, I get that, and that's why I changed the wording to make clear it's an act of "reclaiming" the pejorative term rather than cheerfully endorsing what happened. "Political history of Rhodesia" and "Politics of Rhodesia" - Difference?

Hi Cliftonian,

Thought I'd bring your attention to the proposed merger of the following categories: Political history of Rhodesia and Politics of Rhodesia. The argument (as I understand it) has been put forth that Rhodesia should not have its own category for politics, since the state is defunct and clearly a part of history.

I'm not quite certain where I stand on this, but since you wrote many of the articles included in the former I would like to hear your input.
