It seems from your latest post to the Bureaucrat noticeboard that you haven't seen how fast this issue has moved. Administrators were given the ability to assign and remove "rollback" permissions a few days ago, see the user rights log [1] or the new Requests for rollback board. I've ascertained that it is reasonably possible to obtain a free similar. Despite the fact that the image is used in promotional touristic material,since this image is not free and the copyright holder is uncertain and difficult to determine, I have nuked the image myself. Generally the practice is to leave a note asking them to confirm the request, rather than rejecting it and requiring a new request. If it works, no problem. We used to ask for logged-in confirmation, until we created the template. After the template's inception, we started declining requests that failed to follow the basic instructions. Declining and asking people to repost when the basic instructions are not followed also served the purpose of preventing people from trying to fix the links in the template, which would normally only make it worse. In order to optimize the time the Bcrats would spend in renames, we were making it clear that if a user didn't take the time to read simple instructions, the requests would be denied, which would cause people to read the instructions, thus preventing silly mistakes that caused us to take more and more time to handle simple requests.
Most of this, however, was before clerks started helping out with renames. With the help of the clerks, there's less of a need for us to be too concerned with wasting time fixing silly mistakes. But I guess I was on "automatic". Thanks for the help.

I meant I'd already merged it, actually (converting your "not done" to a "bureaucrat note" to prevent premature archiving as denied). I'm considering changing the template at some point, actually (maybe to a two-stage template to where one template subst's and there's another template hiding all the urlencode complexity) to make fixing the links easier (generally it only gets halfway fixed when CURRENT and NEW are left in place) —Random832 23:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Just got your message. I read the page on s.i.'s differently than you, it would seem. But I see your solution - moving "successfully" to the end - as the easiest thing here. I was more concerned with emphasizing "defence" here but was too lazy to make the one change... Feel free to go back and clean up the text to make it read more encyclopedic. When I left a message on ru:User talk:VolkovBot as requested the page in Russian was incomprehensible and my signature Xxanthippe (talk) 23:06, 6 April 2008 (UTC) appeared as my IP number. Continued editing gave odd text behaviour and I had to reboot my computer to get things working again. I think this bot should be blocked on the English Wiki until its problems have been sorted out. I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the discussion regarding the closure of my candidacy for bureaucratship. As you know, after your discussion, you decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect your decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. As these discussions are specifically not mathematical, but qualitative as well, even after the discussions at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/RfB bar and Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship/RfB bar, I fully understand that your collective decision here was based on "significant and varied" for which there is sufficient evidence. So, while I cannot say I am happy with the decision, I can say that I am satisfied with the care taken to make it, and accepting of your collective judgment. On a personal note, as I based the time between my first two RfB's on your third one, perhaps I may share in your "third-time charm" success, IF I decide to submit another candidacy. I think a lot of those articles and football articles in general are very bias. They contain person viewpoint mildly disguised behind tricky wording without any sources. Thank you for your message Redux, i have read up on weasel words and found that whilst all the pages marked of me are occurring in bias, weasel words are perhaps not the best choice of marker in many respects. I apologise for any inconvenience about this but i think the perspective of many of these articles needs to be examined carefully. The trouble with many of the less major article on footballers is that only a few people know specific data/info about them, therefore they will be rarely edited looked at. This generally means in many cases they hold a strong bias as they have had just one or a couple of writers/workers. I began looking at Brazilian footballers as this is an area of knowledge i have. I will go over them again and place more appropriate tags and raise discussion on the relevant talk pages! Thank you! Oh and the ip edits were also me, i forgot to log in. Tennis

Hello Redux! I have moved several tennis articles to the titles with diacritics and now I see it was some discussion about it on WPP Tennis a while ago. Well, I think this case is much more wide than just tennis-centered and should be subjected to global discussion on WP. Several points are on my mind: 1.) No regional WikiProject has been notified about the proposed change. 2.) Indeed, it is a global issue, roughly there are tens of thousands articles with diacritics on WP. 3.) As for tennis articles, almost all interwikis use real names (with diacritics), it is unusual for EN Wiki to be the only one not using them. 4.) I see you are from Portugal, "de-diacritization" of articles would affect also Portuguese articles, e.g. Portimão and many others. 5.) Hope you will do good at Euro and beat Czechs in the group. ;)

I propose we can start somewhere a global discussion about this because current situation makes double standards and confusion. I remember when same issue was discussed at ice hockey WikiProject. Many players play NHL in the USA and are known by their "plain" names there, still the WPP decided to allow diacritics in titles. There are no problem since then and I'd like to point out that vast majority of project members are Americans and Canadians. Have a nice day and please let me know what we could do. I see your points, still I think regional wikiprojects should've been notified, after all not everybody follows WPP Tennis and related articles. I am afraid the point of "being known internationally in English as ..." is relative. On the ice hockey one, people admitted it is self-evident the names of e.g. Slavic players would be without diacritics since admins of NHL websites don't use Slavic keyboard. Main argument for allowing diacritics was that there is always diacritics-free redirect which allows other users easily find the article. Situation was also resolved by adding, e.g. ČĎĚ, (known in English as CDE) to the article lead. I respect your WPP Tennis discussion but personally I think some new poll should be arranged and all sides (to call it such) would be notified and invited. "Wikipedia is not a democracy" is only a rigid formula, truth is that voting is used throughout WP to determine and resolve many issues. This new voting has several advantages I see. First of all it would be binding. Second, it would be respected because of its clarity. And last but not least no one then could complain. After all, Jimmy made WP:IAR for exactly such situations. You may think I try to push your change back, honestly I favour diacritics but I will respect every voting outcome. Silent consensus of cca 8 people on WPP Tennis is not a solid foundation for the change. And honestly I don't know how this voting would end. Many users are pro-diacritics, many are anti, outcome would be maybe close, but fair. Therefore I propose we make a voting with clearly set rules (i.e. what majority to use) but not only a voting of "are you for or against?" but also to present the situation as you or WPP Tennis see it and the other side also, to introduce both sides' points to non-involved users. Well, I see your points, specifically about the tennis-ice hockey difference. Truth is, it is a highly controversial measure to reject original spelling of someone's name in the name of English language which has nothing to do with individual's name. After all it will do only more trouble as the confusion with naming is high especially for newcomers. It is also not binding, therefore moving the article one way or another cannot be considered as vandalism. It will cause troubles till the day the rules will be widely discussed and properly altered to reflect the common sense and the real situation we have here. EN Wikipedia is English-language indeed but it is a flagship of all Wikipedias, beacon of "multi-everything", we both know this very good, right. :) As such it should lean towards tollerance of different/original variants of names. If there would be on EN Wiki only guys from the UK and the US, we wouldn't be discussing this thing. Current rules on naming are confusing, rigid and wrong. They will be changed in the future for sure, as no one is able to stop the progress which is a continual process which keeps rollin' and rollin'. Evidently this is an unknown Portuguese sculptor, born in 1964, who shares a name with another genuinely notable Portuguese sculptor born in 1899, who has created unreferenced articles about himself on a number of different wikis. His articles have been deleted on the English, German, Finnish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and Slovenian Wikipedias. Would you consider whether to do the same in pt and es? Per Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses, "IP addresses should almost never be indefinitely blocked". Surely simple vandalism is not one of those "almost" scenerios. I have unblocked indefinitely blocked IP addresses that have done far worse than that. Any objections to unblocking, or at least unblocking and reblocking for a set length of time? Same goes for User:12.103.156.83 and User:216.220.101.115, although blocked for different reasons. It it my understanding that IP addresses should pretty much never be blocked indefinitely, except in an extreme circumstance (perhaps an OTRS or WP:OFFICE action). About the Brazilian Imperial Family

Hello Redux! I´m a brazilian and I´ve been for quite some time helping the portuguese Wikipedia. Now I´m translating my texts from it to the english Wikipedia, as in the article about Afonso, Prince Imperial of Brazil and Luís, Prince Imperial. There are many more, as the articles bout the economy of the Brazilian Empire, and also the Political system, etc...

What made me surprised is to see that in the english Wikipedia considers the opinion of "Astrid Bousten" (I think that´s the name) which as far as I know from a few monarchists, it isn´t a historian (she is still in college) and even less "renown". What I heard too, but that we shouldn´t consider, as it is nothing more than personal gossip, is that she was once a man she was involved with the monarchist movement supporting Luís of Orleans-Braganza. Something happened that she quit from it and started supporting the Petrópolis branch. I know that it was something related to her sex change surgery and as Luís of Orleans-braganza and his brother Bertrand are devoted chatolics didn´t accept it well at all. But, about the brazilian Imperial Family, I must confess that I did not see so far any book that considers Dom Pedro Gastão the true heir. The brazilian historian Heitor Lyra who wrote the best portuguese biography of Dom Pedro II (so said another historian, José Murilo de Carvalho on his Pedro II´s biography) wrote in the last of the three books about the second emperor about Dom Pedro de Alcânantara´s renounce. The british (or is it american?) Roderick J. Barman wrote in his biography of Princess Isabel the same about dom Pedro´s renounce. Barsa Enciclopedia also mentions the renounce. All three considers Luís, second son of Isabel, her heir. I believe you should look for impartial views and not in monarchists sites.

Well, if you use Special:UserRights you have to provide the username (resp. # + User ID in this case) as well. Then there appears a link to the user page of the user whose rights you are changing. Antes de mais nada, apresento-me: sou Manoel Fernández Neto, usuário ativo do Wikisource em língua portuguesa e candidato ao estatuto de Administrador por lá. Depois de alguns meses contribuindo para o Projeto em questão, solicitei ao nosso Burocrata acesso às ferramentas de "editor" e "crítico" no dia 5 de abril de 2009. No dia 9 de maio de 2009, solicitei acesso às ferramentas de administrador. Isso tudo você pode ver aqui. Mandei um e-mail para o Burocrata, mas não me respondeu. Isso tudo, além de causar grande ansiedade, causa, ainda, preocupação com o mesmo, pois é uma pessoa querida em nosso meio. Resumindo: até hoje meus pedidos ainda não foram vistos pelo Burocrata (que deve ter-se afastado do Wikisource por algum motivo que desconheço) e, assim, fico aguardando por muito tempo uma resposta do mesmo. Os administradores não vão até lá durante muito tempo e os únicos que vão fazem poucas coisas e, depois, não aparecem mais. Não gostaria que o Projeto terminasse assim e gostaria muito de poder contribuir como administrador, editor e crítico por lá.

Parece algo mesquinho e egoísta, mas como eu sou mais ativo por lá, creio que meu trabalho crescerá mais. Tenho de dizer que quase não aparece ninguém por lá há algum tempo e, por isso, o Projeto fica assim, esperando por contribuidores. Expanding Article on Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd

There appears to be a group of individuals who consistently impede any constructive additions to the article in question. Undoing and blocking all editions pertaining to users outside their nest of selections.

The editing recently done to this article has been referenced to credible sources, some already available on other related articles, regardless of the fact of the neutrality displayed in the additions manifested in the facts and phraseology in use.

It would be detrimental to Wikipedia if a consensus is not reached on this question pertaining to all articles not only this one. If the material being added is not significant it would be understandable, yet where the facts could be correct and the community interested in the subject at hand are in conflict with the manner of its publication, the rational and professional solution would be to offer an alternative to the edition being proposed. Simply deleting and blocking any attempt to contribute to this and any other article in a constructive manner can only be viewed as autocratic in the least and a hypocrisy of what the globally renowned Wikipedia stands for.Wsa1 (talk) 22:41, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

A question or two.

I am unsure if you are the right person to ask and if not could you point me to the best person. Basically, I am currently running the Tikiwiki software on my current web site: asylumprojects.org and I am in the process of hand changing the site over to the Mediawiki software (I.E. the software the runs Wikipedia.). The sad part is that the two software are not compatible so I have to hand copy the the info from one to the other.

Right now I'm in the learning stages trying to learn as much as I can about the software before I do any major copying. To help me I've been reading Barret's book on the software and it is helping to describe various things I need and want to do. One of the things I'm trying to learn and is also part of my question is templates. The book does describes the basic use of templates, but my question to you is could you show me examples info box templates (I.E. the coding I would have to use/how to construct them especially from the admin/bureaucrat's POV) and also how to construct the main page. I know that the main pages use templates but I've not been able to see examples as how they are constructed and I've seen how info boxes are in Wikipedia but I need to know how they are fully coded for my Wiki.

I ran across your name by accident (followed a link) when your request for bureaucratship here apparently did not succeed. I was not sure why someone that seem so earnest with desire, and lacking negative comments, would not be promoted. I looked at you user page and saw that has happened, apparently to a good end, and ran across something I thought you should consider. Then I saw you went on a Wiki-break for an undisclosed amount of time, with a last edit (that I found) on July 25, 2009. I am fairly new (actively) to Wikipedia so still figuring things out. Now I wonder what happened, if it is permanent, or if I just missed something. At any rate my initial reason for contact, after reading your comments and the way you write, I noticed you listed EN-4 under Babel. If you do return (or have and I missed something) I would like to suggest, or nominate if you will, that you elevate your Babel listing to;

For someone proficient in several languages you have demonstrated (from what I read) that your listing of near-native in English does not adequately portray the actual level of expertise I have witnessed. Rename question

Hi Redux! I need to rename my account because I was instructed to do so by Wikipedia Id (Indonesia) community. I have used this username (VagabondQuest) for Wikipedia En, Id, and Commons. At this moment, when I log in using this username, I'm logged in globally to Wiki in any language. But then I'm informed (and read) that username in En, Id, and Commons have to be done separately. I'm confused here. I want my new account to be as globally as the old (current) one, but seems like it's not going to be the case? If I have to change it one by one? I also read that account deletion is not an option. I thought delete my old one since I haven't made contribution and recreate a new one will be easier. But not an option, eh? I don't like the idea to abandon the old one and create a new name. Other than because it looks like not the right thing to do, my old name is also my nickname that many people recognized. So I don't want to leave an empty abandoned page there. So, what's the best thing I could do? To have my name changed, but still integrated within various Wikis? Best regards ~ Thanks for your help! Nyttend and abuse of administrator priviledges

Hello. I am writing you to inform you of the actions of an administrator, Nyttend, and his actions on the pages Template:Cobb County, Georgia and Buford Highway International Community. I am a resident of Atlanta, and an editor specializing in improving pages associated with Atlanta and its environs, especially through the Wikipedia:WikiProject Georgia (U.S. state)/Atlanta task force. I focus mostly on geography, yet I have run into problems with this editor when it comes to the status of East Cobb, Georgia as an unincorporated community in Cobb County, Georgia. It can be confusing, as East Cobb's name is derived from its location in the eastern part of Cobb County. But, as I have documented on the community's page, it is actually the name of a defined community. If you notice, the multiple references I have included all refer to the community as East Cobb, with both words capitalized, as a proper place. If it was only a region, the references would refer to it as east Cobb. The community is considering becoming a city, and the city would be styles as "East Cobb, Georgia." However, Nyttend refuses to allow it on the template because it is not listed in the register of Populated place's compiled by the U.S. government.

This is very unfair. Even if consensus says that East Cobb cannot be included because it is not contained in the register, an exception should be made. It simply has an awkward name. In addition, the register of populated places is always changing and being updated; thus, it cannot be inclusive of all unincorporated communities. In any case, Nyttend has strongarmed the whole process and refuses to debate it. Other Atlanta editors have weighed in on behalf of the community's legitimacy, but Nyttend continues to dictate. Now, he is labeling me as a vandal in order to prevent me from making my case for East Cobb's inclusion on the template.

In regards to Buford Highway International Community, Nyttend has moved the page and protected the page to prevent any more edits. The international community is not synonomous with Georgia State Route 13, yet he keeps redirecting it to that page. Again, he did not engage anyone on the talk page before he made his decision, and prevented it from being challenged by protecting it.

I do not know how else to fix this. I feel this is an abuse of power that is simply skirted by the editor avoiding 3 reverts.

I am watching your talk page, and you can also feel free to respond on my talk page. If you do not feel like getting involved, could you refer me to any bureaucrats that specialize in policing administrators?

(edit conflict) Fr33kman told me about this thread, which s/he found on Recent Changes. Mmann is essentially an SPA who's constantly been fighting for these two articles, along with making frivolous AFDs. Besides Mmann and a meatpuppet, the only user involved in this issue is Student7, who has also tried without success to stop Mmann, who continues to revert claiming (as you see in the second paragraph above) that s/he is permitted to make a unilateral exception to consensus. Contrary to what these two editors have said, the sources on the latter article make it plain that this is a content fork, so I've protected in an attempt to enforce that policy. I've become quite sick of these two users, who have violated tons of policies and only continue to claim that they're entitled to ignore them whenever they feel like it. Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. Impending suspension of bureaucrat privileges due to inactivity

As an FYI, a similar proposal is currently on the table regarding the bureaucrat permission:

Bureaucrat accounts which have been completely inactive for at least one calendar year (without any edits or other logged actions in that time) will be desysopped and have their bureaucrat permissions removed. This is not to be considered binding, or a reflection on the user's use of, or rights to, the tools; if an inactive bureaucrat returns to Wikipedia, they may be granted the bureaucrat bit without further discussion, providing they left Wikipedia in good standing and not in controversial circumstances, and that their identity is not in dispute. The bureaucrat will be contacted one month prior to the expiry of the one-year timeframe on their user talk page, and again a few days before the limit. If the account has a valid e-mail address, the user will also be contacted via that medium. The summary in the user rights log will make it clear that the removal of bureaucrat rights is purely administrative.

Please accept this message as advanced notice that, should the above-mentioned proposal carry, your bureaucrat permissions will be removed pending your return.

I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page.
