Fair use rationale for Image:Cidade dos Homens 4.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Cidade dos Homens 4.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 19:40, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Redux, I know we both discussed about copyright issues in the past, regarding the images from the Brazilian NOC. However, I personally believe that your blanket revert of the bot isn't a good idea. Can we chat on my page on what your issues with the images are and I can try and help you. If you have any issues with the bot, I can relay the message to the bot owner. Please, Redux, friend, I want to help you as much as I can. I know that all of us are getting nailed by copyright; a lot of images that I used in the past are gone now due to the new Foundation policy. Just relax, I want to help. Diyako checkuser logs edit

You are receiving this because your username either appears on the checkuser list or you were one of the arbitrators that participated in the relevant Arbcom case (User:Dmcdevit, User:Jdforrester, User:The Epopt, User:Charles Matthews, User:Sam Korn, User:Fred Bauder, User:Jayjg, User:Morven, User:Neutrality).

Currently User:Diyako/User:Xebat is at a stale state for not editing over a month. User hasn't edited for slightly over a year due to an arbcom sanctioned ban. I have a reason to believe ([1], [2], [3]) there may be a connection as the edit pattern seems similar in many ways. Diyako's wikipedia ban has recently expired but if he is continuing a similar behavior as User:D.Kurdistani, there needs to be a further consideration either by ARBCOM or Community Sanction board (latter seems more appropriate IMHO). A successful checkuser would be very helpful in the decision making process on this issue.

This inquiry is to request if you have "personal logs" of Diyako/Xebat's IP's to compare with User:D.Kurdistani and possible other socks. This is NOT a request for the logs themselves but on weather or not you have them. Please reply on my talk page to confirm if you have the logs or not. User:Mackensen appears to be the only person to have preformed a successful checkuser but others may also have this info.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Rio de Janeiro coat arms.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Rio de Janeiro coat arms.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:52, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:Kenobi-EpIII.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Kenobi-EpIII.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:04, 16 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 15:04, 16 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you had checked the page's history, you would have seen that the reason why it had no information on it was because it had been blanked by an anon, that is, vandalized (diff) — which, as the history page also shows, had been the last edit to the page before yours, to tag it as a possible deletion candidate. I've restored the information page as it existed before. Please always check the history before tagging anything as a possible candidate for deletion. Redux 13:25, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The page was tagged as "missing rationale", which is certainly not the case, since I answered a previous request to provide a specific rationale. I added a rationale, a link to the source and to the source's website's terms of use, which, as I understood them, allows us to use the material in question. The only place I see any indication that the rationale may have been considered "invalid" is on this post, and even so there is no indication as to why. Who has considered it insufficient? Where was this discussion held — and mind it, I am referring to this image specifically, since it this specific rationale that the bot has claimed to be problematic? Ideally, start a discussion on the image's talk page and notify me here. Then, if there actually is a problem, we can work on it. In the meantime, I will see if I can beef up the rationale some, and will be removing the tag. Redux 21:11, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Spiritsjedi.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 06:46, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oi Redux,

Poderias completar as informações desta imagem?

Se encontrares alguma referência e a imagem for entretanto eliminada, deixa-me uma mensagem e eu restauro-a logo. Fair use rationale for Image:Quigon1.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Quigon1.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. EEMeltonIV 22:25, 21 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair-use rationales edit

Thank you for adding a fair-use rationale to the Darth Maul/Qui-Gon image. Please note that a separate fair-use rationale is required for every instance an image is used; it is insufficient simply to state that the image is used "in articles" for critical commentary, etc.; one needs to specify an exact article. When an image appears in multiple articles, a separate FUR is required for each use. --EEMeltonIV 10:07, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

All right. I'll look into it momentarily. Thank you for the note. Redux 17:43, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Developer edit

I'm just curious, would you ever be interested in becoming a MediaWiki developer?--U.S.A.U.S.A.U.S.A. 03:00, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for the Barnstar, first of all :). Well, I don't believe I'd contribute significantly with the typical Developer tasks. Perhaps I might, emphasis on the uncertainty, be of some use as a Root user, but notice that none of the devs have Root access only, and I'm not sure that there would be much use for someone with access to a root account only. I suppose if there was some kind of emergency, or special need, and there was a need for some people to help, and they asked me to do it, I suppose I could accept and help to the extent of my abilities. But as far as requesting Developer access myself, I don't believe that would happen. Cheers, Redux 17:42, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use edit

Hello, Redux. My name is Matheus Wahl and I am a contributor to the Portuguese Wikipedia. In spite of our efforts, our Wikipedia is not as big as our will. Our situation is even harder because of the reasonless non-adoption of fair use. The non-adoption makes our articles about movies, albums, TV, software, etc., embarrassingly not illustrated.

So long ago, you've signed Campani's manifest for the adoption of fair use. Then, I had an idea: as an administrator, bureaucrat, steward and oversight on en.wiki, could you please write a short testimonial (in Portuguese) about the benefits of fair use here, and how useful it can be on pt.wiki? I need your help so pt.wiki can be a truly complete encyclopedia. MATHEUS WAHL 19:52, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

hello..Redux! Please lend me a hand in helping me. I have no idea why the border lines arenot visible on the tempates used in Dhivehi Wikipedia. Because that the border lines are not visible, it's quite odd. Could you please help me on this matter. Thank you very much for the help you have given me previously. I really appreciate it. Lookin forward to hear from you ASP.

But on some articles like this it is visible and other articles like this is not visible.

Thanks Redux, i have done it using the way you asked me to do it. By copying the the code from the english wiki. But it doesnt' seem to help. Bu the way is it that someone might have messed with some other settings? I have checked this from different browsers. None of them seems to show the border lines of the such templates used in Coca Cola.

Rollback edit

Special:Userrights is actually the Steward interface. It is "dormant" in all projects but Meta because Foundation policy dictates that Stewards shall exist only on Meta, and there shall be no local Stewards. If it is possible to modify that tool in order to give it a more limited rights management capability, that could be really interesting.
But on the main issue, and I might be somewhat out-of-date with the current discussions, I should note that granting Admins the ability to change rights (grant and revoke a flag, in this case) is a question that most probably goes beyond the boundaries of the English-language Wikipedia. It is a Foundation issue, I would say. Under current practices in use by the Wikimedia Foundation, which controls Wikipedia, there are only 2 classes of users that can grant and/or revoke rights (not counting Developers, who can do pretty much anything, since they have access to the servers themselves): Bureaucrats (locally, limited to two levels of access and the bot flag) and Stewards. The proposed change would affect solely the en.wiki, clearly, although it involves granting a user class with +1,000 members the ability to grant and revoke a level of access (albeit a very limited one) — it could be more practical, and safe, to have the Bureaucrats handle the requests (perhaps through the tool suggested above, to be created).
The bottom line is: check with the Board of Trustees if this will be endorsed by the Foundation if approved by the community. Ultimately, if the Board vetoes it, it will simply not be done.
Personally, I don't have a problem with it. Userrights is indeed a more practical interface than the specific Bcrat tools. So if the Foundation supports it, so do I. Redux (talk) 01:37, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's not a Foundation issue. Please think about it for a moment. Just because rollback is being implemented as a user right, that doesn't make it somehow magically different from any of the other things that aren't user rights that administrators can already give and take away. There's no "can edit" user right – but administrators can grant and revoke the ability to edit, via blocks. There's no "can edit own talk page" right – but administrators can grant and revoke that, via page protection. There's no "can use AutoWikiBrowser" right – but administrators can grant and revoke that. There's no "can use user scripts" right – but administrators can grant and revoke that by editing the user's user javscript page. All these things are similar in nature to rollback but just happen to be implemented in a different way. User rights just happens to be the most convenient way of implementing this. I do not see why the Foundation needs to get involved at all – Gurch 12:09, 18 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
"If it is possible to modify that tool in order to give it a more limited rights management capability, that could be really interesting." It already is possible, and that is what the suggestion is. It would make Makebot and Makesysop obsolete. As for the admin/rollback thing, I don't think that will go anywhere. Prodego talk 18:35, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit histories are forever edit

Hi again. I just thought I'd let you know that I see now that there is really no fixing of the whole mess; see this diff (note my auto-edit summary) which you'll understand, but would take some explaining to someone who had not followed this story. Cheers, Jack Merridew 17:45, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, if the impersonator was active enough, it is indeed possible that there will always be some kind of trail that would appear to lead to the original username. The rename tool does not affect the "passive" side of the logs, which means that, for instance, if the impersonator was blocked while still using the username, the block log will still show that the original username was blocked, even if it was renamed later — that is why I renamed the account before blocking it. Hopefully, most of it has been changed, and what was left won't be grave enough that it will cause problems in the future. You should note, however, that if the impersonator signed any comments using the original username, those will need to be changed manually (although it is possible to get a bot to do it, if there are too many signatures to fix). Cheers, Redux (talk) 20:42, 21 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I fixed the few sigs I found — and will keep an eye on them. The other actions you've performed for me really should be a standard part of the rename user process; maybe even hard-coded right into the rename function used. I expect this incident will nudge consideration of the issues along a bit. It occurs to me that if the impersonator had steer-clear of me and articles I'd notice edits to, the mess could have been far larger. Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:36, 22 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:São_Francisco_Ensenada.jpg edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:São_Francisco_Ensenada.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Inactive Administrators On Dhivehi Wikipedia edit

Hello, (Though i'm quite late to say this, Anyways Happy New Year 2008 :D)

There are three inactive administrators on Dhivehi. Where Oblivious had his last edit on Apr 18, 2007 and LeX, Deviathan both had his last edit on Aug 02, 2007. And Some other wikipedians have been complaining about the absency of administrators. So I have left a message on their talkpages. So what should i do? Please help me on this matter. best and kind regards! --~GlaCiouS~ (talk) 21:20, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
