Importance ratings

Hi Readro. Just a quick comment on the importance rating that you have been assigning to some F1-related topics. I can't help feeling that you are over doing it a bit. The Top rating, according to the assessment page, is reserved for those articles that are extremely important, even crucial, to its specific field. As we are assessing through the WP Motorsport system, this field and frame of reference is all of motorsport, not just F1. You could quite easily have a long discussion on motorsport and never mention John Surtees for example, so he can't possibly qualify for Top billing. In fact you probably could do so without mentioning luminaries such as Ayrton Senna or Michael Scumacher, although these would be more notable. As far as I can see, Top should be reserved for those subjects on which even a disinterested passer by in the street would be able to comment on. Pyrope 20:00, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey. Both good points I grant you. But thinking in terms of encyclopedic priority (which is what the ratings are for, not simply about how famous a topic is) I would personally argue that no driver of rider, or indeed driver/rider, should qualify for Top rating. Think about it in terms of a conversation with somebody who has absolutely zero prior knowlege:

You: I've just read a fascinating article about Ayrton Senna.

Them: Who?

Y: He was an amazing Formula One driver, won the Championship loads of times, and was quite a colourful and controversial character.

T: What's Formula One?

Y: Its the top form of four-wheeled motorsport.

So you can't talk about Senna to an uninitiated person without referring to F1 or Motorsport, but you can certainly talk about motorsport without needing to refer to Senna. And in Surtees' case you need to talk about both F1 and MotoGP, both of which would have priority over the man himself. Once in a while a driver/rider will make headlines (Schumi, Senna, Rossi etc) and so will possibly qualify for Top rating as a newsworthy personality, but the vast majority of the meat puppets at the wheel/handlebar are "only notable within its particular field or subject and has achieved notability in a particular place or area", in that someone outside MotoGP probably wouldn't care about Loris Capirossi etc etc. That would make them Mid rated. People who have won championships would probably move up to High priority, as they are "extremely notable, but has not achieved international notability, or is only notable within a particular continent". I personally think that this is poorly worded, and the last word should read "context", which would make more sense. Hence, someone with international notability, but only as an F1 driver, would fit this field. After all, somone may be known internationally, and still be insignificant to the topic. If you argue that being known over a number of continents puts you in the Top/High priority brackets, then I'm afraid that almost every World Championship driver and rider, even those with only brief careers, will have to go in there, making a mockery of the rating system.

I still stand by my assessment that Top should be reserved for those articles that are crucial to the understanding of the broad "motorsport" topic, and for luminaries as mentioned above. I agree that there is a case for Surtees, but I just feel that his achievements (team owner, car designer and race promotor too, don't forget...) are too far in the past to be relevant to a discussion of motorsport as it currently is. This is the criteria that I would argue also excludes Moss and even the sainted Fangio from Top ratings, much as it pains a classic motorsport fan to type such heresey.

Template:Infobox motorsport championship

Hello, Readro. I'm not sure that I agree with your addition of opt-out code for the "drivers" and "teams" fields in the above infobox. While it won't change the box's appearance per se, it may encourage editors to be a bit lazy in their research and leave that data out (and it is readily available data). This is key data, even for defunct championships, because it gives a good impression of how successful (or not) that series is/was. That's why I left them as mandatory fields when I created that template. Of course, if you have in mind a series for which this data is not available, then having the option makes total sense. In which case, I'll add some more info to the usage instructions on its talk page. It's not a big deal or anything; I just wanted to seek your thoughts about it. Regards, Adrian M. No, don't worry about reverting it or anything. I'd be surprised if we couldn't find, or work out, the necessary totals from somewhere, but if that info is really not available, then it's probably better to have no fields than "N/A", but I'll leave that to personal choice. Engines and chassis would still be relevant, because (as it does with other series) it will serve to indicate variety. For example, there might have been a number of identical customer chassis (like March or something) and a bunch of DFVs, or lost of variety. Let me know if I can help in any way. Pickup Truck Racing

No worries, thanks for the input, I'd rather the page be 'right' and I can see where you are going. I wouldn't be concerned with the technical specs section; yes they are lifted (and modified) from the website but after a conversation with SHP Motorsport (the site's owners) earlier today they are happy for me to use content from the site, including the driver pictures. The website obvously does not have details of this as it was a conversation I had directly with them; how do you suggest I approach this with regards tagging the images? Can I just leave them with the current promotional copyright tag (which is correct) and add a line stating the source and image owner is SHP Motorsport?

• Most recent edits along the lines of "JS: fixing MoS and other miscellaneous style problems..." CHECK
• Lazy automated "peer review" contributions. CHECK
• Laughable, self-justifying attempt to build a "newbie" persona on WP:F1 page. CHECK
• Most au fait newbie in the world, ever (automated peer review, complex formatting, right up to speed with jargon) CHECK

Blatant old user, passing himself off as a newbie. However, I have a feeling that he is best warned that we know who he is and that we'll be keeping an eye on him, rather than a knee-jerk ban. Most of his recent edits have been of the tedious, stamp-collecting, procedural type, which is quite useful to have someone doing. The problem will come if he starts getting abusive again, or starts to try and throw his weight around. In particular, it would be worth watching out for when his inevitable, lazy, glory-seeking, thoughtless edits end up creating more work for others than he is acually doing. He is clearly a user with an overdeveloped sense of his own abilities and worth and will need to be watched. Perhaps some apology for his previous behaviour and an obvious appreciation of just how antisocial his edits were might go some way to avoiding a straight ban? Anyway, I'll leave the ball in your court. If you think a ban is the best way forward then you have my full support on the sockpuppet justification. Pyrope 19:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Fair comments all. Like I said above, he got on my wick because of poor editing, I was never on the receiving end of his arrogant, abusive rants. The irritating thing is that he is 90% reasonable, and 10% arrogant pillock. Unfortunately that pillock component is pretty overowering some times. With Davnel03, I found myself blocked because of several image problems, Neldav I got blocked because you reported me to Yamla. Lorenzo Bandini Trophy

Hi Readro. It appears as though you were the one who added the Lorenzo Bandini succession boxes to the relevant articles. Do you know if there's a complete list of the winners online anywhere? Failing that, I have a couple of questions for you:

• Was the trophy awarded in 1993 and 1994? The Wikipedia sequence goes straight from Capelli in 1992 to Coulthard in 1995.
• Did de Montezemolo really win in 1997? He hardly strikes me as a suitable candidate for "most promising young driver in F1" !

Slingshot Pass

I figured out that the article was indeed a how to but I completely forgot to change it as I am a BSc student in software engineering and am very busy. But the Terms of Turbulent Air as well as Slipstream are accurate. Its physics as well as common sense if you apply your mind to it. Even notice the article on slipstream it gives the same concept. Just exactly where do you say the article is wrong anyway just to be clear? I am a karting driver so I know the ins and outs of overtaking in corners.

Please check WP:CSD-- speedy a7 can only be used if there is not even a claim to importance. The 2008 Formula One season is underway. With the relaxing atmosphere of the first round at Melbourne (where Lewis Hamilton won with Nick Heidfeld second and a superb Nico Rosberg in third after a very eventful race with only seven drivers finishing) behind us, the focus then shifted to Malaysia. A superior Kimi Räikkönen got back on track with a great win; Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen finished in distant second and third places followed by a tremendous Jarno Trulli and unlucky Lewis Hamilton in fourth and fifth places respectively. Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, David Coulthard and Jenson Button all showed their teams' strong improvements and performances in seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth respectively. The two Grands Prix have shown all the rivalries we will be seeing during the season and how dependent the results are on the removal of traction control and engine braking. Hi. I noticed your userpage mentions you have a basic understanding of German, can you check if I've understood "Bruynseraede, in den Ardennen geboren, aufgewachsen in Deutschland," correctly as Bruynserade was born in the Ardennes and grew up in Germany. Honda made significant changes to the RA108. The first flyaway stages of the 2008 season have come to a close with Bahrain, where Felipe Massa, Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella drove storming races to 1st, 11th, 6th and 12th respectively. Robert Kubica also looked impressive (especially during qualifying), and looks for BMW Sauber to be in championship contention. The unfortunate Lewis Hamilton finished in 13th, losing the championship lead to Kimi Räikkönen. Jenson Button (who retired) had a race to forget after a qualifying session to remember. Then most of the cars got updated and the teams tested their first 2009-spec cars in tests at the Circuit de Catalunya. In a probable look into the future of Formula One design, Renault used RBR's idea of a 'shark fin' on the airbox and the teams looking into the 2009 regulations, including the planned introduction of slick tyres. Honda tried a 'dumbo wing' on the car's nosecone and every other team tried to improve. Super Aguri lost their deal with the Magma Group after the planned buyout last month fell through, but did make it to the Spanish GP; SA's future is in the air again and still looking poor. The Spanish GP got underway with the hope that the adaptions will give new teams chances to win or get in the points. Fernando Alonso starred in qualifying by setting a provisional pole position time just before Kimi Räikkönen took it away by 0.091s. Toyota have made a jump from their slot at 11th-12th on the grid to clear points positions. McLaren didn't have a nice time with fifth and sixth places, in addition to David Coulthard who could only manage 17th after having a bad last lap. The Circuit de Catalunya saw Kimi Räikkönen take the glory with Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton finishing in second and third places respectively. Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella all drove one of their most best races, with Kazuki Nakajima also showing that he and WilliamsF1 are worth their stay in Formula One. Heikki Kovalainen had a nasty crash, causing a prolonged Safety Car period. He was rushed to hospital for checks; thankfully he was announced to have no serious injuries. Toro Rosso had a race to forget after both their cars were crashed out by other drivers. At the start of the season the FIA threatened the cancellation of the Spanish and European GPs if racism continued in Spain after after hearing of the racial abuse directed at McLaren's Lewis Hamilton while he was testing the MP4-23 at Barcelona during Winter testing. Ayrton Senna at the 1991 United States Grand Prix. Ayrton Senna (da Silva) is most known for his push to win, much the same as Gilles Villeneuve. Senna is a three time Formula One Champion, winning in 1988, 1990, and 1991. Many people have compared Senna to Juan Manuel Fangio, who is known as "The Master" of Formula One. Senna is a Brazilian, and raced for Toleman, Lotus, McLaren, and Williams. Statistically, he is among the greatest ever, with 41 wins and 65 pole positions. His then-record of 65 pole positions was broken by Michael Schumacher in the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix. His rivalry with Alain Prost is among the most legendary in Formula One, going as far as Senna colliding with Prost in the first turn of Suzuka in 1990, giving Senna the title. Tragically, Senna died during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix when his Williams left the track at high speed, hitting the concrete retaining wall at around 135 mph. No driver since has been killed while driving a Formula One car. His skill in wet weather and bad conditions has made him stand out among other drivers. Where most people would choose to drive conservatively, to avoid causing a crash, Senna would still push his hardest. Following the death of Senna (and Roland Ratzenberger), many safety improvements have been made. What could possibly be better than his on-the-track skills was what he did off the track.
