Graphics Lab edit

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 02:08, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Maps edit

Just wanted to say thanks for the great work on maps submitted to the graphics lab. I hope you can help with some of the backlog on the requested maps page as well. If you need any help finding data or sources let me know. Kmusser 14:27, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot. Actually, I've been working on a map of the Pamir Mountains since it was requested at Images to improve#Pamir. I have a question about old, communist names of mountain peaks there, present in the CIA map (from 1985, iirc) I've been using as a source. It would be really great if you could help me out with this.

Mats - I have been working on a new maps project you might be interested in. WorldFactMap.com I'm using the public domain CIA World Factbook as front end but using interactive maps (NASA blue marble - equirectangular projection) and Google Maps. As soon as I finish adding Google Maps to all the country pages, I'm going to open up the www.worldfactmap.org site to take it to regional and city levels. I will more then likely use Wikimedia to host on .org the work templates for to each release to the .com public site. I'm currently working on swaping the world viewer with Google Maps on the 'World' home page after the user selects a position on the globe to drill down to. I'm also linking back to the Wikipedia on each country page. (try United States as an example country page) It could be a fun project. John Spikowski 01:36, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the invitation. However, I'm not working with maps at the moment, but I might return to it soon and produce a 3D map of Gamla stan before that.
/ Mats Halldin (talk) 07:36, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
For names I'd go to a commercial atlas to check, we can't use them directly but they are a good way to fact check. I usually use Encarta [1] and from there it looks like most of the names have not changed, though it does use Lenina instead of Lenin. Kmusser 15:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Also checking a paper atlas it looks like those are new names - Pik Ismail Somoni was Pik Communism during the Soviet era. Kmusser 15:35, 18 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Translations edit

I am getting involved in translations on Meta, for the ongoing fundraiser as well for other stuff. I could really need your help. You'll find some pages that need checking at Meta. Right now I don't find the page I was looking for, but I am sure you navigate your way on Meta better than I do. // habj 01:02, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Stockholm-stub edit

Hi - it has come to our notice that you have recently created a new stub type. As it clearly states at WP:STUB, at the top of most stub categories, on the template page for new Wikiprojects and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies, and whether better use could be made of a WikiProject-specific talk page template.

In the case of your new stub type, it seems ambiguous as to whether you expect it to be a stockholm-stub (for non-geographical articles) or a stockholm-geo-stub (for the geography of Stockholm). You have made the category's parents a geography stub category and a non-geography stub category. As such, the scope of the category is not entirely clear. Though Sweden's 700 geography stubs probably could do with splitting, there is considerable need for debate as to what the correct way to do that would be - and simply splitting off once city - even the largest - is almost certainly not the ideal way of doing it. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any reason why this stub type should not be proposed for deletion at WP:SFD. And please, in future, propose new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 05:51, 4 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
OK, so sorry, I didn't know about those rules and pages. Thanks for telling me about them. I'll have a look at it.

Stub sorting edit

Hi Mats,

Stub sorting is actually quite simple. It's just a matter of finding the most specific applicable stub types, which exist. For bridges in general it's {{bridge-struct-stub}} unless they are in the US or Canada, in which case they get {{US-bridge-struct-stub}} and {{Canada-bridge-struct-stub}} respectively. At the same time all stubs about buildings in Sweden should get {{Sweden-struct-stub}}. See WP:WSS/ST for a list of all stub types, though it's not always up-to-date.

Good luck,

The guideline to follow is WP:NAME. Since the other on is inactive, that means it is not accepted as a guideline. It is best to have titles without any special characters (such as é,ü or ß). If you see any articles with titles that use special characters, move them (using the "move tab" next to the history tab) to standard lettering. Moving pages automatically creates a redirect. John Reaves (talk) 14:17, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

WP:NAME has nothing relevant to say on diacritics. This has been discussed numerous times, and it is clear that there is no generally accepted policy on the English Wikipedia to avoid diacritics. Even native English-speakers who care for scholarly standards create articles with diacritics all the time. The important point is just to always create a redirect from the form without them. up◦land 20:12, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have moved all the pages back to their correct names. John Reaves, if you have been around here for a while longer than Mats (who has been mainly active on the Swedish Wikipedia until recently), you should know that there is no consensus to remove diacritics from proper nouns. In all cases I have seen where it has come to a poll, the opposite is true: there is usually a majority for keeping the diacritics. It may be pointed out that the Encyclopaedia Britannica uses diacritics as well. Even the Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911 used diacritics. The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians uses diacritics. There is no clear "English standard" that says that they always have to be stripped when there is no technical inhibition that precludes them.
The consensus interpretation of the use English policy is that common English names should be used when they exist (Munich, not München; Florence, not Firenze; Gothenburg, not Göteborg). It does not mean that we should invent forms that do not in fact exist in any language. up◦land 20:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks! I did feel doubtful about it. Thank you a lot for fixing things. I'll try to make it a habit to create redirects to the appropriate articles.
/ Mats Halldin (talk) 20:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Also think about making sortkeys for categories without diacritics. As much as the diacritics should be in the names for those of us who appreciate them, they should not be used for sorting. Sorting is inconsistent between languages using the same diacritics, and the software can't sort more than one way in any case. up◦land 21:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was just coming here to warn you that I was wrong (as I just found out), but it looks like someone already beat me to it. I was basing my actions off of an (obvious) misunderstanding of the policy. Just for the record, I support using spellings with diacritics, especially since we have redirects. Let me know if you need any help moving things back. Sorry about my mistake. John Reaves (talk) 18:17, 24 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problems, things have been fixed already (as far as I know). Feel welcome to the wonderful world of diacritics and other cool symbols, Inuktitut should probably get you an idea of how cool things can get. Not being the most disciplined person on earth, I probably need to fix a few redirs still though.

Nauru Map edit

Ok it seems I actually do need help. I finished labeling the map from KimDime69 in English. I have uploaded it to wikipedia, as you can see here: [2] If you can see, only my titles appear, but the original titles that were only the map, including the index box, do not appear. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Is there a way to merge all the layers? I'm new to vector images so please reply ASAP to see if we can solve the problem. Storkyrkobrinken edit

In regards to my clean up tag that I failed to explain, for which i apoloigse, the page just generally looks messy, there are heading there but it just looks like a lot of information has just been stuck there. The english is aboslutely fine from what i can see its just a the formatting of the article i.e. there are no distinct sections, the Old Names section is hard to follow, try putting a line between each one (not a physical line just a bit of a space so people can see where it starts and where it finishes) The reason the tag is there without any reason is because i use NPWatcher or New Page Watcher, which makes me lose the page as soon as I've marked it, and lets just say Storkyrkobrinken is not an easy word to spell, especially for someone who doesn't use it on a regular basis. I also believe the paragraph you've put on the bottom should be just under the opening paragraph just for neatness. Hope this helps. Also I apologize if this took a large amount of time to reply to, i went to sleep pretty well straight after patrolling new pages. ScorpO 23:33, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think you have writen an excellent article on lake Flaten, and the other lakes, Drevviken, Magelungen. I am trying to keep the articles on geographics in south-eastern Stockholm up do date and see that articles like yours would be so much better then the ones there today. Would you be interested updating the Swedish article to the same standard or would you allow me to take your articel as a base for create articles on the lakes in the Swedish Wikpedia? Mr Malhi edit

Mr Halldin,

I have noticed that you have placed the article that I have authored under the hoax category. This is based on the fact that I have not provided any references.

Mr fowler our family has books about Mr Malhi, by Pakistani journalists, (though these are printed in urdu). If you like I can send you a copy. However I cannot make references to it's ISBN because the material is with the family in Lahore and I am overseas in Australia.

Nawaiwaqt ( a respected Pakistani newspaper) prints an article on Mr Malhi on death anniversary every 12th July, which states just about what my article states. So if you pick any article on the 12th of July from any year after 1991, you will be able to confirm the validity of this article.

However, the authenticity of this article cannot be disputed because I am his grandson and anyone who knows the truth about him would be me.

As to checking the validity of what I have written, it can checked by anyone in the Muslim league archives.

Also our history books mention him and Sialkot convention.

We have in our collection all the medals that he was awarded at these conventions and I have photographs of Malhi sahib sitting next to the quaid at the sialkot convention.

I have looked at your other articles and I can see that you have particular interest in Pakistan/subcontinent history.

I am assuming that you are more likely than not from Pakistan. If you want I can organise for the material to be sent to you.

However Mr Malhi, nor his Biography is a hoax.

Regards,

Haroon

Hello Harson,
No, I have no particular interest in Pakistan (i.e. the closest I've ever been is Rome or Singapore) and there is no need for you to send any material to me.
Instead, assuming your are correct regarding Mr Malhi, you should go to the article's talk page and explain why the article is not a hoax. All Wikipedia content need to be verifiable and references not available to others are impossible to verify.
Additionally, Fowler&fowler added the hoax and unencyclopedic tags in the article - I just reverted you removing them without a comment or discussion. So, again, please visit that talk page and open for a discussion.

Unspecified source for Image:Bellerophon and Pegasus.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bellerophon and Pegasus.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 16:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Liftarn 16:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dr roger daley copyvio tag edit

This article, which you marked with {{copyvio}}, is copied from an official US Navy website; texts produced by the US Government are considered in the public domain. I removed the copyvio tag and moved the article to Roger Daley. But it's still a lousy article seen from a quality standpoint - I hope you can edit it into some semblance of wikiness! Thanks for helping! --Alvestrand 21:47, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, maybe it is an acceptable copyvio, however, I have no personal interest in the article and I don't think I will be editing it. It looks like selfpromo so I can only hope someone else will fix it. (I'm very tired right now.)

SEE-KID copyright tag edit

SEE-KID is a non-profit public research work of eminent significance in medical application. Through this project, the treatment of squinting is based on a structured and reconstructable way. Since there is a publicly free version of this software available, we would appreciate the inclusion of the project description in Wikipedia. --mbuchber

That's not a notability tag, its a copyright tag which I added because the content was obviously copy-pasted from an external site. The bottom of that page clearly say "© 2003-2007 Upper Austrian Research Corporation." which is apparently different from the GNU Free Documentation License. Additionally, Wikipedia is not a billboard (please read Wikipedia:Spam and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest): External links normally goes at the bottom of articles in a separate section. You virtually littered the article with external links which makes the article look like spam.
/ Mats Halldin (talk) 12:31, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
What would you suggest to make the article Wikipedia compatible, or should I just delete it? I stated that I hold the copyright when I started the article (also for the pictures) and that the text can be released under GPL.
/ mbuchber (talk)
Hello again,
I suggest you remove most of the external links from that article and keep those necessary for the article in the reference section or in a section named "External links". To confirm you hold the copyright just follow the instructions in the copyright tag:

If you hold the copyright to this text and permit its use under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License
Explain this on this article's discussion page, then either display a notice to this effect at the site of original publication or send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a postal letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. These messages must explicitly permit use under the GFDL.
Note: Articles on Wikipedia must be written from a neutral point of view and must be verifiable in published third-party sources; copyright issues aside, your text may not be appropriate for inclusion in Wikipedia.

As it seems, you are familiar with one or two of the people mentioned in the reference section, so I would absolutely recommend to find some more "published third-party sources".
/ Mats Halldin (talk) 22:36, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Note about tagging: I couldn't see that you had placed the standard warning tag on Mbuchber's talk page when you reported the possible copyright violation. Please make sure you do so - it makes it easier for us janitors to see that the procedures have been followed. --Alvestrand 15:48, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, sorry about it. I'll try to remember next time.
