August 2012 edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Fiat 500 a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Please don't move any more articles as you did with Mini and Fiat 500. Such moves are controversial and should only be done after proper discussion. See {{Movereq}}. Of course, we aren't saying you did anything bad - WP:BOLD is at the heart of Wikipedia, but so is WP:BRD which is what you do when you disagree with somebody's bold actions. Not all moves will be controversial, and it's hard to tell what will and won't be so don't let that put you off moving things in the future, as long as you do it correctly, i.e. move both the article and talk page at the same time, and never do a copy/past move. Feel free to ask if you need help. --Biker Biker (talk) 22:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Moves of Mini and Fiat 500 edit

Hi Ravanellidiciamo.

Earlier you moved a couple of Mini articles and a couple of Fiat 500 articles. These created a few problems. First of all, there were cut and paste moves involved (as, I think, you've realised). Cut and paste moves break the edit history - it's important that all the contributors to articles are credited - so please don't do that again. I've fixed the histories now. Pages can be moved using the 'move' facility or, if a page such as a redirect needs to be deleted to make way for the move, use the {{db-move}} tag.

Another problem is that there are many incoming links to the Mini and Fiat 500 articles and instead of pointing to articles about the old Mini and Fiat 500 as they were, they were then pointing to articles about the new Mini and Fiat 500 after the moves and so were effectively broken. These would have needed to be fixed if the moves were to stand.

Finally, as I'm sure you've now realised, these moves turned out to be controversial. They have now been reverted as part of the 'bold', 'revert', 'discuss' cycle. The next step would be to discuss any proposed move and I would suggest making a request for move, if you are so inclined.

Best wishes and happy editing. Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:02, 16 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
