You blocked this IP for 6 weeks. Upon request by User:Tdxiang, who was unable to edit because of the block, I unblocked it. I'll watch the talk page for warnings, and I encourage you to do the same. Darn that collateral damage :) Ral315 (talk) 05:46, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for taking care of this. Mandated registration and user whitelisting before editing from a known IP cache (used heavily for vandalism) is starting to become pretty high on my list of priorities for Wikipedia's success in the long term. Wikipedia policies / references (NLP Workshop)

edit

We have been unable to reach agreement on recent discussion on the topic concerning WP:Verfiability, Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published_sources and NPOV#Undue_Weight. I've used Sinclair&Bray / Crabtree as examples of references that can be removed under these policies - could be please comment on this. Personally I'd like to review all references, and remove ANY sources that do not pass wikipedia policies, this in turn will help us lift the quality of the sources. I'd also like to group the various sources into different viewpoints including applicatons of NLP (management, education and learning, etc.) and research such as experimental psychology, and criticism (NLP as a movement, lack of research, experimental psychology, etc.). These need to get separate because each has a different criteria for argumentation and evidence. --Comaze 23:42, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

My RfA

edit

Thank you for your support in my request for adminship. I'm delighted that the RfA succeeded with a final consensus of 52/17/7, and receiving comments including having 'excellent potential to become a great moderator', and I am now an administrator. It did however only just pass, and I shall do my very best to rectify any of my errors, including the general belief that I should do more article work. If you have any concerns, or if you ever feel that I may be able to help you, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Again, thank you!

How does submission work? When I write my blurbs, where do I send them? Do I just post them on that subpage? Thanks! --Avery W. Krouse 20:23, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, come to think of it, I just signed on to a pseudo-WikiProject that is going to take up more time than I thought. I doubt I'll be able to do the Signpost writing at this time. Sorry! --Avery W. Krouse 20:29, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Ral! I think I'm ready to come back from my hiatus from the Signpost. Would News and Notes be available for me to do? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 23:06, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Great, thanks! I'll start this week then. Yup, it was nice not to worry about deadlines and such, and focus more time and energy on other business (info-en, some meta business, etc.). I'll also try and chip in with the "non"-usual articles when needed. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 23:12, 11 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

News from the developers

edit

I've been following the debate at Wikipedia_talk:Wikipedia_Signpost#More_news_regarding_economy_and_hardware and I have a modest proposal (if I may be so bold). How about we wiki-interview Brion in much the same way that we wiki-interviewed Jimbo a few weeks back? I think that a lot of people are interested in what's going on in this area, and the Wikipedia Signpost would be a great forum for presenting the information. Save the numbers

edit

Hi, I'm not sure if you realized this, and I didn't want you to go away with the wrong impression, but the "campaign" to save 3055 was a joke. I thought it was obvious. But then, maybe you were joking too. ;-) Of course it is better to let you know just to be on the safe side. --BostonMA 21:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, sometimes humor doesn't go quite right, especially in text. I guess you can never say something absurd enough that there isn't someone else who might say it in all seriousness. --BostonMA 18:19, 19 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Aha! There's not much to say really. The backlog of CheckUser requests has been growing beyond the ability of any of the current arbitrators, so they turned to the former arbitrators to help out. I was the only one still around who didn't already have it (having quit before CheckUser was developed), so now I do. I'll have to teach myself how to use the thing, but hopefully I'll be able to do a bit of chipping away at the backlog. Ambi 02:50, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
(cc to Essjay, Ambi) Oops, I'd already mentioned the CheckUsers in News and Notes. Feel free to remove it and write a longer piece, or incorporate anything you have into it. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 03:15, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Open Proxy or not

edit

Hi, Ral315. I was at WP:AIV and someone was complaining about a vandal whose page said he or she had been blocked as an open proxy, but the vandal had resumed vandalism. I took a look, and saw that an admin had blocked indefinitely as open proxy, but that the block had clashed with a shorter block given by another admin. So I reblocked indefinitely. However, I'm not at all an expert on open proxies, so I'd appreciate if you'd take a look and check that the block really should have been indefinite, and shorten it if necessary. User:SPUI

edit

Hi, you mentioned at WP:AN/I that if anyone reverted infoboxes on the CA state route articles during the consensus building period that you would block them. User:SPUI has done exactly that at California State Route 19 and California State Route 90. He attempted to disguise it as part of a larger addition to the article and left a notice to that effect at WP:AN/I. However he's still editing the infobox with full knowledge of your warning.Gateman1997 19:54, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

edit
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

edit
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Just wondering, have you read WP:DATE carefully? I've seen you adding back in unnecessary links here and there. I'm letting it slide on Wikipedia Signpost because that's not encyclopedic content, but in mainspace articles it really is a good guideline to follow. Wikimania Signpost series?

edit

Hi there - I don't know if sj's already talked to you about this, but he and I were talking about starting a series about Wikimania (and other potentially other large meetups, such as the upcoming Hong Kong meetup) in the Signpost -- a la the ArbCom series.

We were thinking one short (2-3 paragraph) article every week or every two weeks until the conference happens in early August. The articles would detail planning (and what we still need volunteers for), feature conference events, themes and key speakers ahead of time, mark reminders of deadlines, and generally raise community awareness of the event and of other meetups. Maybe it could have an acronym that spells out MANIA? ;) Let me know what you think; we could have the first one ready by this Sunday night for the next issue. cheers - Brassratgirl 05:30, 8 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also left a note on the tipline.
Hey -- we were thinking right now for starting the series, so as to have time to have a couple introductory articles, make sure people know about the cfp (which is closing April 30) and try and use the series to get more volunteer interest (since we need the volunteers now, rather than later :)). When's the weekly deadline again? Brassratgirl 03:19, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
sj's working on it; should be ready by this afternoon. Thanks! Brassratgirl 19:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Think again

edit

Ral, by the looks of your user & talk page you're quite involved with W, a respected admin and all that. But I found the message you left on my user talk to be unhelpful, to say the least. You really should stop and give it a good thought before applying the word "troll" to anyone. Jtkiefer's actions were very damaging to me and 100% unjustified. How exactly am I supposed to communicate with him? With kid gloves or as some kind of mini-Jesus? My words to him have been very measured, yet convey the displeasure anyone on the recieving end of his actions would have felt. I'm particularly glad that I didn't get down on the floor with him and trade personal insults/profanities. And along comes some guy I've never been involved with to tell me "Please don't troll other users. ". Your understanding of the situation must be very slight to come out with something like that. The point is: an editor who has been unjustly attacked and banned by a vindictive admin certainly has the right, probably even the responsibility, to stand up for himself. That's what I did, and I did it with pretty much the lowest level of verbal hostility possible. An apology from you will let me know you have the capacity, after some reflection, to judge this sort of dispute correctly. Without an apology, I'll file your name away for voting on any issues that might involve you in the future. JDG 17:26, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
