further explanation edit

deletion edit

The applicable procedure here is WP:AFD. You will be expected to explain why the person is not notable according to our criteria at WP:BIO. That the Arabic WP deleted the p. is relevant, though it does not decide the issue here--each of the WPs has different policies in this regard. We regard COIU as a reason for close examination of WP:NPOV, but not necessarily deletion. He appears to have won an important award, which is generally taken here as establishing notability --please explain in your deletion request why it does not do so in this case--perhaps the award is not truly important?

The procedure here is a little complicated, & if English is not your native language, sometimes hard to follow. As an administrator here, I will make the request in the proper format, if you will give me here the reasons, and if I think they make a least some reasonable case for deletion, but the community will decide. I will look for them here tomorrow. If I do not respond, let me know on my talk page when you are ready. DGG ( talk ) 05:13, 4 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

DGG,
Thank you for your willingness to help. These are the reasons that I believe the article should be deleted:
  1. The author of the article is also the subject of the article. His intention appears (in my opinion) to be self-promotion.
  2. The article is a biography of a living person and does not have reliable sources.
  3. The article fails to establish the notability of the subject with reliable sources. All of the references are in Arabic and are limited to: a) a page in the opinion section of alwatanvoice.com which appears to be the author's work, with a one-line mention at the bottom that he won the Naji Naaman Literary Prize in 2005. Said literary prize is apparently a competition to promote "gratis culture" and the subject of the article, along with his co-author, was one of 32 laureates in 2005 alone. b) a broken link to www.azzaman.com. c) A Wordpress blog post that contains the same text as the first link. d) Another broken link to www.azzaman.com. e) Yet another broken link to www.azzaman.com.
  4. The Arabic Wikipedia community discussed the deletion of the equivalent Arabic-language article and determined that the content was the biography of a non-notable figure. It stretches credibility to assert that an Arab author in an Arab country is more relevant from the perspective of an English-language encyclopedia than from that of an Arabic-language one, IMHO.
  5. A web search of the author's name, in both English and Arabic, does not return reliable sources. Indeed, it does not return many results at all other than duplicates of this article on Wikipedia mirrors. There is a Kuwaiti soccer player who shares the same name, who returns many more results.
Perhaps I have overlooked some reasons, but I think that this should be sufficient to establish that inclusion of the article goes against Wikipedia's policies. --Ragheb.araby (talk) 00:00, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
a few comments: the references are indeed very weak. What we would need here for notability is reviews of his books, of references to from other sources to his work as editor of a newspaper. But it is not unreasonable that he might have them, though I would not have the ability to find them. The English versions of his books are self-published; if the Arabic versions are also, it would very much speak for deletion. But there is no requirement here or sources in English--Arabic sources are fine. The different Wikipedias have different standards for personal notability--ours depend mainly of the referencing. If another WP goes by different standards, such as a pure vote, or qualitative judgments of importance, we and they might well come to different conclusions. If you want to edit this , do. Tomorrow, I shall come and post it at AfD for you and leave you the link. DGG ( talk ) 00:14, 5 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
Did you forget, or decide not to do it after all?--Ragheb.araby (talk) 18:22, 13 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've posted it, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bashar Abdulah. Now go there and explain your reasons more fully, but be aware that arabic sources are acceptable here as much as English. after you do, I'll give my own opinion, and we will see what others have to say.
