edit

For those of you who signed up early, Wiki-Conference New York has been confirmed for the weekend of July 25-26 at New York University, and we have Jimmy Wales signed on as a keynote speaker.

There's still plenty of time to join a panel, or to propose a lightning talk or an open space session. Register for the Wiki-Conference here. And sign up here for on-wiki notification. All are invited!

disclaimers

edit

You're entering a minefield when you start putting hatnotes on articles pretending to be disclaimers: this is why we have WP:NPA. It's the article/piece without the disclaimer that will cause all the problems. If you really want a specific disclaimer for Signpost pieces, it should be applied to all Signpost pieces, not just those which are obviously controversial!

I think we've done our best to keep the "copyright threat" piece fair-sided and factual. Durova's piece is obviously an opinion piece, but then so are many papers that appear each week! I actually agree with 95% of what she's said so far: if Durova and myself agree, it can't be that controversial! ;) Physchim62 (talk) 00:32, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can finish up the tech report sometime in the next few hours, or early this evening. I have been away on travel (without internet) and now I'm sick. So, have a bit of catching up to do. --Aude (talk) 16:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I thought I could get it done, but I'm way too sick, now lost my voice, and don't have any energy. I should definitely be back to normal next week, and hopefully can make it to the conference this weekend. Sorry about holding things up. --Aude (talk) 23:27, 20 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion for Signpost

edit

Since alt text has become an issue, and the difficulties in writing alt text are becoming apparent, I suggest that the Signpost interview Graham87 who is not only blind, but is an extremely active, productive and articulate Wikipedian. He has interesting viewpoints on a variety of issues, often unexpected. This is a time when the community needs to become more aware of the diversity in editor experience. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 17:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would be happy to try, especially if you can give me some guidance as I have never done an interview for a publication in my life. Perhaps you could give me some links to past Signpost interview so I could get an idea of what is wanted. —Mattisse (Talk) 19:58, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ragesoss, a few editors, including myself, have seen a drop in quality at the Signpost. I'm just curious to know what has been going on. Are some of the Signpost editors dropping out, or is their a shortage in writers? Thanks for your time, –blurpeace (talk) 04:20, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, we had noticed the apparent lack of features in recent issues. That was my main concern, besides for the "Build-your-own edition" fiasco. Are any positions, that lack a regular writer, open? I'd be happy to lend a hand. –blurpeace (talk) 22:14, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

edit

No problem. I guess I just dived in and didn't really introduce myself or anything, but I guess once I got started it kind of seized me. I wasn't sure about covering deletion debates, but then I thought I'd just suck it and see, and it seems to have gone down okay. I think the listing of the rfc's is kind of important too, I'm not sure what sort of readership the signpost gets, but I think there's value in getting the word out about issues which need people to comment in as many ways as possible. Anyway, thank you for the kind words, and thank you for the opportunity. I have to say I have enjoyed the "paper" immensely under your stewardship. Don;t take this the wrong way, but even when it has been a bad issue, it's been focused. It seems to have a personality at the moment. Although how, I don't know, when you think about how it is written. Maybe you should write more editorials. Hiding T 20:20, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

From your user page, I see you attend Yale. Could you do me a favor and check out this page, and specifically, the two Sketches for Taking the Count. One of them should be uploaded to commons and added to List of works by Thomas Eakins as #304. Raul654 (talk) 03:34, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done: File:Sketch for Taking the Count, by Thomas Eakins, YUAG.jpg--ragesoss (talk) 16:02, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Sage. If you don't mind, I'd like to impose on you just a bit more. There are three other Yale library pics I need for that article:

  • Retrospection, #140 - [2]
  • Sketch for spinning, #147 [3]
  • William H. Macdowell, #254 [4]

One of these does not exist in the article, and the other two are black and white ones I'd like to replace with color images. If you can add them too, I'd be extremely grateful. Raul654 (talk) 16:23, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added the color for Retrospection. None of the Macdowell or Spinning listings are the ones from the YUAG; they are just digital files for the ones from other collections that are already in the article.--ragesoss (talk) 20:04, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Since they don't have it, I think I might need to re-verify that 147 actually does belong to Yale (because I'm sure it would be in their collection if they did). Raul654 (talk) 20:16, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Full version of NICE to be released

edit

Thanks for helping me and my colleagues test the NICE interface modification. Depending on when you installed the tool, you were only presented with a specific subset of the features we have developed. We are ready to roll out the full feature set which, we expect, will make the gadget significantly more useful. Before we do that, we'd like you to answer a few questions about your activity in Wikipedia as it relates to undoing other's edits and what you thought of the NICE features you were shown.

The survey will ask for your Wikipedia username, but you can participate anonymously if you choose. To do so, send me an email with an address I can respond to and I will have the survey software respond with an anonymous token for you to continue. --EpochFail (talk|contribs) 17:35, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ragesoss, allow me to ask here two things about the Signpost (I found it very confusing finding the correct place for that there :-) ). I don't know whether it is appropriate to have an essay about my experiences in German, Dutch and Esperanto Wikipedias, in contrast to each other? It would be not a report but a description from a personal POV. On the other hand, I could imagine to write a "beat" about Wikipedias in different languages, but it would be general descriptions mainly based on earlier research rather than news reports. What do you think? --Ziko (talk) 13:50, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
