Great! If you have any specific questions, you can ask them on my my talk page; however adoption is also a program and I will teach you the basics and the (not-so-basic) parts of Wikipedia. Some first advice: if you not only plan to edit Wikipedia as part of your role, but also make personal edits, you may also want to create a separate account for your official contributions (a possible username could be User:Rwelean (BYU)); however check this page for an overview of allowed and disallowed uses of alternate accounts.
I've been thinking about this--I've only been hired for a year, so it might be easier to say that most of my 2016 edits are for BYU. But I'm also new here; would the main reason to make a BYU account to make it clear when I'm acting as a BYU employee and when I'm making my own edits?Rwelean (talk) 16:44, 1 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I do not normally give barnstars for first articles, as they are well, first articles; but it was exemplary how you were able to compose an article that would probably qualify for featured status (with some copyediting and fixes) so quickly. However, I still have some notes on how to improve the article:

  • A selected list of works from Dalton would be nice: see WP:LOW for accepted conventions on how to format bibliographies (note that "LOW" is just a shortcut to refer to various policies, guidelines, and "meta" pages).
  • Although the article mostly adheres to Wikipedia's Manual of Style (MOS), I suggest that you should skim through it or use the simplified version of the MOS to pick up the most important style guidelines of Wikipedia. Reading the whole MOS and its subpages is counter-productive, as memorizing it requires eidetic memory; so do not stress too much about memorizing the MOS; consult the appropriate section when you need to.
  • If you need to find information about an aspect of Wikipedia style guidelines while you are editing, here is a tip: go to WP:MOS (type WP:MOS into your search bar), open it in a new tab, and use the handy sidebar on the right.
  • Long quotes (about 40 words or more or more than one paragraph) should be placed between <blockquote>Your long quote here</blockquote> tags.
  • Birth names should be placed like this:

Thank you for the barnstar and for helping to improve the article! I noticed you added a list of her works, more sources, and expanded the lead section--wow! I often have trouble with lead sections. I was thinking of nominating the article for Good Article status, but with your improvements I think it might qualify for Featured Article status. What's your opinion? I would not nominate it for FA that quickly, as many editors go beyond the criteria in their assessment, and for good reason, as FAs should be Wikipedia's best work. I would not even touch GA unless FA is impossible, as nominations take two eternities (especially for a topic which systemic bias is against). I suggest you do the following:

  • Thoroughly copyedit of the article's prose. If you can request another person to copyedit the work, do so, as there is currently a shortage of editors working in Wikipedia's Guild of Copy Editors and peer review. Any style issues that exist will most definitely be brought up at the featured article nomination, so don't worry about that for now.
  • Squeeze every last drop from the sources you can find on Dalton, or try to find a few more sources to make sure that the article is FA comprehensive; I'll try to find some more sources myself. A specific note: is there any more information you can find on her teaching career?

Once you have done the above, then the article will probably pass FA, and you will have the privilege of the magic silver star. :) Esquivalience t 02:49, 8 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I thought I had found all the available sources on Dalton, but you were able to find more! I was relying on the BYU library search's metadata which doesn't always pick up sources. It looks like I can find a few more sources through books.google.com; do you have any additional recommendations? Vasco M. Tanner

Thanks for your edits expanding Vasco M. Tanner. A word of advice: while content on his personal life sourced from a biography written by his daughters may be useful, care should be taken so that it does not give undue emphasis to relatively minor details, or introduce a biased tone from a likely biased source, per WP:NPOV (in my opinion, details like "He helped milk cows, mow and rake hay, and transported livestock and goods to Payson..." are especially unessential). An encyclopedic article should emphasize what a person is most known for, as determined by amount of coverage in independent, reliable sources (of which the biography may be neither, especially if self-published). While the article can certainly be expanded, an ideal article structure would emphasize Tanner's scientific career and accomplishments, while still maintaining an impartial tone (neither glorifying nor denigrating), but simply reporting the facts. Facts and details of lesser weight should be given proportionally little coverage. Similarly, there are several tributes to Tanner in the 1970 Great Basin Naturalist, but given they are part of a tribute issue, care should be taken to extract relevant facts without turning Wikipedia into a tribute article. Hi Rachel, hope you are doing well! I saw your question when you added Jokhang to the list of good articles, and thought I would stop by and try to answer your question. I actually think maybe that article belongs in Art and architecture, specifically in the Architecture – Religious subtopic, similar to the article Badrinath Temple. However, I haven't read the article; I'm assuming it is mostly about the building. If it is about the religious group of people that meet in the building, then you were closer to the right place; although maybe it goes in the Religious congregations, denominations, and organizations sub-subtopic? Hi Rachel Helps, perhaps you can help! I've been developing the article Ralph Vary Chamberlin for some time, and am trying to acquire as much secondary literature about him as possible. The Harold B. Lee Library has some rare materials. I'm especially interested in the following:

  • List of publications of Dr. Ralph V. Chamberlin to June 1st, 1944 (AC 901 .A1a no.1369)
  • The Ralph Vary Chamberlin honor banquet, December 2, 1957, University of Utah. (BX 8608 .A1 no.337)
  • Ralph V. Chamberlin oral history interview, transcripts (MSS OH 238)

We do have a scanning department, but I'm not sure if they'd be up for scanning whole books. I'll check the items out today to see how long they are and get back to you later today or Wednesday. User:Animalparty I didn't realize it from looking at the call numbers, but all of these items were in our special collections, which means I couldn't take photos of them, but I will request to have the works list and transcript to be scanned. I took a few pages of notes in case the scanning takes a long time, but it should be done in about a week. The honor banquet program was short enough that I was able to take notes on pretty much the whole thing. Hi, I just promoted a hook that you reviewed and read your comment about the wikilinking. True, we could run every hook with only the name of the article bolded, but to make hooks stand out in the list we also link place names and unfamiliar terms like pre-teen soldiers. We see that readers do indeed click on these additional terms, though not in the same volume as clicks on the main article. But we do not link common terms, like World War II (and although hook writers do link this term way too often, I always unlink it while it is in the prep sets). Although there are a lot of rules at DYK, much of it is common sense. Keep an eye on the hooks on the main page, or those awaiting promotion at T:DYKQ, and you'll get a better feel for the wikilinking. Removed Utah county category from Provo?

While you are correct (Provo is indeed a city in Utah County), Provo, Utah has its own category, which includes the Provo, Utah page (article). That category (Provo, Utah) is subcategory of the Cities in Utah County, Utah category. In most cases, pages (articles) and categories should not be included in both a parent category and one of its immediate subcategories. However, the Provo, Utah page should be included in several other categories, such as Cities in Utah (even though Cities in Utah County, Utah is a sub-subcategory of the Cities in Utah category).
