Richard Goldstone - new version

You commented recently on some BLP issues concerning Richard Goldstone. I've written a considerably expanded and improved version of the article in my userspace at User:ChrisO/Goldstone. If you have any comments about this new version before it gets transferred into article space, please feel free to comment at Talk:Richard Goldstone#New version. -- ChrisO (talk) 23:26, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Notification: General sanctions and 1RR restriction on Richard Goldstone

You are receiving this message because of your involvement at the Richard Goldstone article. Please don't consider it an assumption of bad faith

As a result of an arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee has acknowledged long-term and persistent problems in the editing of articles related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, broadly understood. As a result, the Committee has enacted broad editing restrictions, described here and below.

  • Any uninvolved administrator may, on his or her own discretion, impose sanctions on any editor working in the area of conflict if, despite being warned, that editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process.
  • The sanctions imposed may include blocks of up to one year in length; bans from editing any page or set of pages within the area of conflict; bans on any editing related to the topic or its closely related topics; restrictions on reverts or other specified behaviors; or any other measures which the imposing administrator believes are reasonably necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the project.
  • Prior to any sanctions being imposed, the editor in question shall be given a warning with a link to this decision; and, where appropriate, should be counseled on specific steps that he or she can take to improve his or her editing in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Discretionary sanctions imposed under the provisions of this decision may be appealed to the imposing administrator, the appropriate administrators' noticeboard (currently WP:AE), or the Committee.

These editing restrictions may be applied to any editor for cause, provided the editor has been previously informed of the case. This message is to so inform you. This message does not necessarily mean that your current editing has been deemed a problem; this is a template message crafted to make it easier to notify any user who has edited the topic of the existence of these sanctions.

Generally, the next step, if an administrator feels your conduct on pages in this topic area is disruptive, would be a warning, to be followed by the imposition of sanctions (although in cases of serious disruption, the warning may be omitted). Hopefully no such action will be necessary.

This notice is only effective if given by an administrator and logged here.

  • In relation to the above, you are informed that the Richard Goldstone article is under a blanket 1RR restriction and violations of this restriction will result in escalating blocks and/or topic/page bans. Thank you for your cooperation. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:15, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

File:Silkski promo '09.png

I am trying to understand why you have this file up for deletion You stated,"Fair use rationale is not correct. Resolution is too high. As the person is living it is likely that a replacement could be found." Yes an picture like this could be found but all of these pictures has the copyright tag on the picture. (Trust Me) I know :) Also it was my very first time putting up a picture on this Site...so if you think it needs something else, I just tell me and I could provide anything...because I am a direct link to Protect Ya Neck Records, and Silkski (Jerome Evans). Thanks.--L. E. Evans 07:49, 24 June 2010 (UTC)--L. E. Evans 07:49, 24 June 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Diamondthadimepiece (talkcontribs)

Wikipedia fair use policies are very restrictive. Part of the restriction is based on whether an alternative could be found, which is "free" (i.e. not subject to copyright restrictions). For someone who is still alive there is a very reasonable chance that a free image could be found, so fair use images are generally not acceptable. If the copyright owner wishes to, they can decide to donate the image to wikipedia. To do so you would need to use WP:OTRS. However, if this was done, the image would then be freely available to anyone who wanted to use it for any purpose.
Please also bear in mind that if you have close links with this person or their management, you may have a conflict of interest. Please read WP:COI for more info on how to edit if that is the case. Quantpole (talk) 07:55, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

In this case, what would be the more appropriate rationale for this picture? It could be found on other sites free...and all of the pictures like this found has the copyright tag on the picture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Diamondthadimepiece (talkcontribs) 08:19, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately I don't think there would be an appropriate rationale for this picture, unless whoever holds the copyright relinquishes that right, and the copyright tags are removed. Generally speaking, images of people are not acceptable for fair use, unless there is something in particular about that image, and the article has critical commentary on the image, for example [1]. See Wikipedia:NFC#UULP, where it explains this. Quantpole (talk) 09:24, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Silkski

Ok...I just have a question. I am trying to understand. Maybe after all of this clears up, I will be able to rewrite the article a little better. You say that what I have written from Scene magazine was a promising source. I know other sites of magazines and write ups where Silkski is, which could be good sources too, but how do I imply those write ups with out plagiarizing. I know that I could only copy and cite so much. Maybe later after the 7 day period is over, if you like, you could help me rewrite it (The biography potion of it). I could provide the sources...Magazine Articles and News paper links. He have also done much more music, but I did not have the time to put everything up yet. I know that everyting that has to do with the music portion must be verifiable. This was my first complete article that I have written, which is why I am fighting to keep it up. I worked soooooooo hard. He has done sooo much, and it seems to be scattered all over the place on the internet, which is why I created the article to put things together and make it easier for people to find links to what he has done. I love Wikipedia, and like you I am always on it looking at everything. I want to create other articles too, but I chose Silkski first because I know that I could find a lot of sources on him to help create the article. The next article I hope to write is Rhyme Syndicate. I can not believe that they are not on here...and yet they are sooo popular, and legends within hip hop. Anyway here is an example of a write up with Silkski. How would I be able to import info from it? Do I just take portion of what is said...along with my own words? How much of it could I use and cite? I have so many other sources too that talks about him. http://www.hiphop-elements.com/article/read/4/6423/1/ 09:00, 25 June 2010 (UTC)L. E. Evans —Preceding unsigned comment added by Diamondthadimepiece (talkcontribs)

You shouldn't have to worry too much about putting the sources into the article right now. All you need to do for the deletion discussion is show that there are good independent sources available. Check out WP:RS for an idea of the sort of sources that would be good to get. One thing to be careful of is sifting the good sources from the not so good. The link you've given looks good on the surface but at the bottom it says the sources is "PRWeb", which means it is essentially a press release, and as such isn't that great as a source.
It is tricky to write articles without copying what they say too closely. The way I've been told to do it is to read all the sources first, and then write an article in your own words. If you try just adding bits from the different sources in turn it is hard to avoid plagiarism.
One thing you could try is asking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hip hop, or one of their members: Wikipedia:WikiProject Hip hop/Members - if you do that try asking someone who seems to be contributing at the moment, like User:Esanchez7587. They might be able to help with sourcing, and with the setup of the article and so on. Quantpole (talk) 09:19, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Schlumberger Business Consulting

Hi Quantpole. I have unmerged this page from the Schlumberger article yesterday, and it seems you have reversed my changes again. I have told Cirt (who first deleted this article) that I wished to improve on it and solve neutrality concerns about it. Please give me some time to do so. I was an intern at Schlumberger Business Consulting for the past few months, and this entity is separate from Schlumberger, in terms of activity, sector, management etc. I think it should be in a separate article. I'll undo your change and I'll start working on this article very soon, in order to make it better.

Sincerely,

Axblt58 (talk) 07:38, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

This article was redirected to the parent company as per this discussion. If you think that the article would be better served separately then you shouldn't really just undo the result of the previous discussion. If you want to read up more about whether it is a good idea to have a separate article then I suggest you read pages such as WP:AVOIDSPLIT, WP:SPLIT, WP:MERGE. It would also be helpful to write a userspace draft, to demonstrate that a separate article can be written on the subject. This could later be moved over into the main article space.
As an aside, you should be careful about editing subjects to which you are closely related. Bear in mind that everything written should be verifiable, reliably sourced and a neutral point of view. I recommend you read about how to edit if you have a conflict of interest, and be very careful to avoid advertising. Quantpole (talk) 08:16, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Schlumberger Business Consulting: new article

Quantpole,

I've rewritten the article on Schlumberger Business Consulting, and posted it on the "Ask for feedback" page. If you want to have a look at the article and comment on it, I would be grateful. Here is the link to the userspace draft: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Axblt58/SBC. Thanks for your help,

F*CK DRE deletion edits

¿Why you delete the comments about this website in the Dr. Dre article? Thanks, SummerInParis —Preceding unsigned comment added by Summerinparis (talkcontribs) 14:18, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Because it is not referenced to reliable sources, and so does not show why it merits inclusion. We generally don't include stuff about fan sites and so on as well. Quantpole (talk) 14:28, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Ok, now I read the reliable sources and understand perfectly. But the mention in the External Links I think is correct, the article have a fansite listed here, and I think quality, porpoise and of the source is right, I mean the three meanings of the source. ¿This make sense? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.58.147.26 (talk) 20:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
