Question regarding a proper behavior in cases of repeated acts of anonymous vandalism

I have a question regarding a proper behavior in cases of repeated acts of anonymous vandalism. In particular, I am referring to the page Viktor_Petrik. There have been numerous attempts to change the entire contents of the page (with some clearly wrong and unsupported information) and I tried to undo these changes every time I saw them. The modifications came from different IP addresses, so proposing to blacklist particular addresses seemed impractical. Did I behave right under those circumstances? What I am supposed to do the next time when the same modifications are being pushed (after the protection period of one week is over)?

Thanks man. I was going to stick the dolphin into the AFD thread. That AFD seemed a little image-lite don't you think? Probably need to limit my class clowning though.

There are (or used to be) seals or sea lions also.

On the turtle racing, there are over 500,000 hits for "turtle racing". In "Painted turtle", I had 3 quick newspaper references, plus capture for racing is mentioned as a minor use (compared to pets) in the serious Gamble articles on overcapture concerns. There is some controversy as to whether it is cruelty to animals (I really don't know if it is or not, but I think the controversy makes it inherently more interesting). Obviously it is kitschy and has that appeal. Plus if you look what I wrote, there is stuff about doing it in bars now, not just summer fairs. It's probably totally the sort of pop culture thing wikipedians would enjoy and it's not even as obscure as you might think. Be a fun article to research. Maybe even go get a first hand photo or video and all that. Could really be snazzy (as an article). Plus, I bet you have a lot of great ideas from other stuff you've done (and I'm reasonably heavy on the biology itself, now) for that resource. P.s. I'm a little bumming right now as I'm getting an FA reviewer who wants my article to be more "technical sounding" when it has huge technical content, but we did the work to very thoughtfully make it readable, while keeping accuracy. Which actually I would do in the real world, too. I have a Ph.D. Find that the more jargony and poor writing types tend to be the ones who care less about actually reporting results or who are defensive on their technical savvy, so try to dress it up. Biologists are the (second worst) too, accurding to a study of journals for needless technical usage and poor writing. Medical of course is the worst. It'll be fun to go get the wiki "hardware". I think you totally know what you are doing, but going through any kind of review, you get new learnings that are helpful in general article work. Biggest challenge will be digging out the content (for that subject)...but stoked that you are up for challenge. It's really gotten pushed along a bit already.

Israeli animal spy conspiracy theories

Hi. :) You seem to have done some good cleanup work on this article, but unfortunately it all seems like you inadvertently created a plagiarism issue when you removed quotation marks from the text "The Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens pointed to the Mossad shark and other Arab conspiracy theories as an example of 'the debasement of the Arab mind.'" The whole thing was a quote from The Washington Post, who were quoting the Wall Street Journal. Viktor Petrik

Question about inaccurate or poorly written comments and editorial remarks on the page for Professor Viktor Petrik. I noticed that you and one other member continue to edit hearsay and undocumented references to Petrik and continue to reinsert them once corrected. I personally have traveled to St. Petersburg and met Petrik; I have researched many of his claims along with some insight into the defamatory press that he has recently won his legal battle. There are 22 more such cases and according to the current court records it appears that Petrik has been able to substantiate each of his scientific claims.

I also can only find one person at the Russian Ministry of Science that had an interview with the WSJ - he was an administrator and not a scientist; I can't seem to find anyone else in the Ministry to support the claims that Petrik's work is "Pseudoscience".

I thought taking a little time to help with the edits might clear up some of the bad press.

So aside from the WSJ and other press that has now been proven in Russian court as defamation what other sources do you have to continue to push these claims.

The only comment I have is that the quotations from Cervantes are somewhat long. Perhaps you could summarize part of the quote and then quote fewer lines? I just touched up the hook a bit. I guess with the Pinocchio article it took me longer to really get the concept down and this article was much easier. Well, since it was an interesting article I figured I'd take a look at it. I used the Serial comma and U.S. instead of US--I don't know what your take on those conventions is. Also I noticed that a few times you used "the authorities" without specifically explaining who they were (CIA, FBI, DoJ, DoD, PTA?). Not sure if the sources were specific about that or not. I do miss the snow, but California is a wonderful place, where one could surf and then go downhill skying at the very same day. I used to do lot's of downhill skying, but a few years ago I broken my shoulder, and my husband said: "No more skying". Pretty remarkable how varied of a climate you can find after driving for a few hours like that. That is quite the picture of the van there, I wonder how long it would take to shovel that out? I saw some cars almost completely covered like that in Cambridge, MA after the big snowstorms a few weeks ago. They have some narrow side streets there and after they plow the cars are just covered. Like this except there were two feet of snow on top of the car as well. It's kinda ironic though, that I live near some great skiing areas but never bother skiing. I could imagine driving in a blizzard could be a thrill. I have never done it. In Soviet Union I had no car, and here, the roads in Sierra are closed, when there is a blizzard. But sometimes I was a passenger on a ski bus on mountain roads in Soviet Union in a blizzard. It was scary, especially in two places. We called the first place "I love you, life", and the second one: "Life, I love you even more". I started skiing, when I lived in Soviet Union. I did ski Elbrus, Cheget, in the area of Dombai, and many other places. Once I went skiing to Arctic (crossed the Arctic Polar circle). It was fun. BTW I see we have no article about Cheget. It is one amazing mount. Maybe one day I'll write an article about it. I have lots of pictures from this beautiful place. And now it is time to let you do something else. Yeah, if somebody would have ever told me that my computer would be hacked, that I'd get emails from somebody, who pretended to be my gmail service, and then I'd get email from somebody, who pretended to be to be a member of Arbcom, and then that a respected wikipedia user would believe that those emails were obtained somehow legally, and all of this would be connected to my editing of wikipedia, I would have never ever believed it is possible, but it happened right in front of my eyes. Ok, I tried to clean up some of the grammar and trim some long sentences. Hope that I didn't change the meaning of anything. This is a tricky article to explain in detail, though. I'll reread it again later and see if there is anything that still confuses me.

Oh man, that is a funny article. H. G. Wells would be proud. You could go in a number of different directions with the hook, though. Perhaps something along the lines of:... that the mayor of Jafr, Jordan organized a vigilante force to take part in an epic battle against an invading force of giant space warriors? Yes, Adelies are cute, aren't they? When I went to Antarctica I had only a film camera on me, but I am proud that two of my images taken with my old film camera are still used in the article. I have many good and even more interesting(unique) images taken in a very remote places, but I have no good scanner (actually I have no scanner at all), and I am not going to get one. So, if I want to upload my old image, I'm simply taking a picture of a picture using my digital camera. BTW, at first I did not want to go to Antarctica, my plans were to go only to South Georgia Islands, so I called a travel agent, and asked her, if they have a tour to South Georgia, and she said: "No, but we have tours to North Carolina" :-) Then I understood I'd be better off looking for the tours that go to Antarctica and South Georgia together. Oh that was a little humor. Someone was complaining that they thought it was wrong of the admin to protect the version without the tags at the top and I linked to a joke page at Meta that said something along the lines of "Admins always protect the wrong version". Of course, by the end I started to entertain the thought that the tagger was possibly acting in "no-so-great faith" by tagging the article without an explanation why. I know, I am becoming quite the cynic. (forgive me Jimbo!)

Rest assured I've never seen anyone dump a bunch of silly templates on a article linked from the main page like that before, and hopefully I won't see that again until the day that I wiki-die. If someone did that to an article that I had written I probably would have been rather peeved, to tell you the truth. Yes, a few people from Oregon and California were taken by tsunami, but 6 were rescued, and one, 25 years old man was killed. There are lots of damage in Santa Cruz, like around 17 millions dollars. It is very scary what Nature could, and how powerless people are do. They knew about that tsunami coming to Santa Cruz many hours in advance, but no property could have been protected. What is the GNG?

In a recent AFD on an article about a SCOTUS case, you wrote "Nominator seems to be unfamiliar with the GNG." Can you educate me as to what "the GNG" is? Thanx. --Pseudo-Richard (talk) 03:56, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I tend to use a ton of initials. I was referring to the General notability guideline. I think in that case the nominator had said something to the effect of the case being a minor one compared to most SCOTUS cases as his rationale for deletion. My thinking was that he misunderstood notability, thinking that it was relative to other topics in the same category as the article (thinking the case was less important than a lot of things the court has done) rather than whether it measured up to the "GNG". I think the "GNG" is generally all that needs to be considered at AFD, except when it comes to news events (WP:NOTNEWS) or people who have gotten coverage for one act (WP:BLP1E).

That was a pretty neat article, very interesting. A couple things: a. Sorry I removed the Humpty Dumpty reference, that was very funny though; b. the last section could use some more explanation, "Whittlestone once belonged to immovable megaliths". What is Whittlestone? That's the first time it's mentioned in the article (cool story though).

BTW it reminded me my own Kafka's experience with US emigration department. I went there to get my green card. I was told I have to go to room #12a, sit on a green chair, and listen until my name is called on the radio. There was no room #12a there, but there was room #12. I knocked the door, an angry lady came out, and before I was able to open my mouth to ask a question, she pointed me out to the sign at the door. The sign stated: "Do not ask questions about room #12a" :-)I guess, if I am blocked, no, not for writing this article, but for nominating it on DYK, I'd spend my time re-reading Kafka :-)

That is really incredible, I am so glad that I haven't had to deal with the immigration departments. Pretty much everyone I know who immigrated to the U.S. has horror stories about the bureaucracy there.

I did not notice at first that person who criticized Mbz1 for alleged soapboxing was herself a professional political blogger (read "propagandist"). Same problems with at least two other bloggers I met here. But this is only natural: people tend to associate themselves to another person and think: "she did it for precisely the same reason I would do the same". There is a psychologist trick: "Look at the picture of this boy, and tell me what he likes", and a subject starts telling about himself, rather than about the boy on the picture. An example from this unfriendly environment: "he did it to provoke you" (which means only "I would do this to provoke you"). This way of judging others is frequently wrong, especially when people came from different cultures. In fact, a typical person from Russia, US or North Caucasus could react very differently to the same.

Now back to the point. Mbz1 actions are a classic example of reaction to an obstacle by a person of her temperament. Consider someone who was asked to come to room 13 and pick up his parcel. He comes and sees the door to the room locked and no one around (something like topic ban). Here are first instinctive reactions of four temperaments (although they can act differently after thinking a while). Phlegmatic (weak, stable) like me: go back, return later, and do not think about it. Melancholic (weak, unstable): go back in frustration and never return. Choleric (strong, unstable) : hit and break the door, e.g. by creating socks. A sanguinic (strong, stable): look for the key or people around. Hodja Nasreddin (talk) 14:13, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

I have an engineering degree and attained a tiny degree of notability, maybe the quantum minimum of notability for a Wikipedia article, by coauthoring a couple of books that were, in my own opinion, pretty darn good. As for the hypothetical motivation of the many people (NOT just Mbz1) who have been tag-teaming each other's articles through DYK despite POV issues -- their motivation is irrelevant to the question of whether DYK should tamely let them flaunt its policy, which is that both articles and hooks must be NPOV.

Is it so hard to believe that somebody wants Wikipedia to follow its own policies? Does somebody who says that articles should be NPOV before we point to them from our front page have to have a secret evil motivation? Interesting, it looks like Oskar Eder is now Dr. Asher Eder, and it looks like he has written several works on Israel-Islam relations. That looks like a pretty substantial biography from an academic publishing house, I turned up a few other sources online: [7][8][9][10][11][12]

(1) Are these like online screen names? If so, I'd still capitalize "weev" at the beginning of the sentence, and "timecop" shouldn't have had a case change in the translation. Also, either all of them or none of them should be surrounded by quotes. I chose to remove the quotation marks because more of the names appeared without them than with them. However, if you think it's better to use the quotes, just make sure they all have them.
(2) This seems like the best translation of the word to me, but do you have more of the original text so I can verify it through context?
(3) That was a literal translation of the group's name into Portuguese and then another literal translation back out, so it just got mixed up in the process.

Wow, that was quick, thanks. weev is always lowercase, even our article on him has a lowercase title. This is the source, odd about the quotations. It's no problem; I'm glad to help. Okay, so keep weev lowercased and lose the quotes. It's somewhat common in the Brazilian media to put quotes around totally random, unfamiliar English words, but since we know it's just an online alias, there's no need to do that here. After reading the source article, I'd say you can either stick with "publications," change it to "materials" (which is a little more literal but also more vague in English, so maybe not the best option), or change things up a bit and say something like: weev, one of the members of the group, has been quoted by Gawker Media, which broke the news as "exclusive." Actually, either way, I think you should shorten "of the Gawker Media group" to "by Gawker Media." At The Bridge (2006 drama) you used a script to replace & ndash ; with a literal dash. The & ndash ; renders correctly on modern browsers on all systems, whereas the literal character may not, depending on the user's system's character set. I think. I wrote an article Erotically shaped plants. It would have made a great April Fools' Day DYK, like: "did you know that under certain light conditions penises could be grown in a pot?" It would have brought thousands of readers and maybe some money to wikipedia, but sure enough it was nominated on deletion, and I doubt it will survive. So read it now, while it is still here. I'll see if I can find any decent sources, but I'll tread carefully at the AfD lest someone claim I was canvassed. Well, the piece I wrote last night for had around 1,300 characters. Maybe we could add a new section named, for example, "the most pornographic pepper" and concentrate on it? I could also add more info to the main section I believe, but I am not sure how you count.
