The Haller Castle in Coplean (in hungarian, Kaplyoni Haller-kastély), Cluj Country, is registred on the list of historical monuments in Cluj country[1] elaborated by the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2010.

History

edit

The Castle, also known as the shell castle (because of the ornaments on top of the windows), was built between the years 1725-1771, in the architectural style baroque by the Transylvanian governor between 1735-1755, Ioan Haller. It was erected on the place of an old mansion, the building consisting of the basement, ground floor, second floor, and roof. It is situated in the middle of a rectangular field, at the entrance of which is a bastion. It is assumed that for the erection of the building, stone brought from the the roman camp in Cășeiu[2]. Jozsef Kadar was describing the castle in his monography dedicated to the Country of Szolnok-Doboka: "In Coplean, the castle and the church have been built out of the stones of this camp, just as the church of Vad."

Initially, the castle was built in the earliest Transylvanian baroque style, later Rococo ornaments made by the Austrian sculptor Anton Schuchbauer (1719-1789) were added. He also made the Statue of the Virgin Mary in Cluj.

In 1920 the castle suffered a fire, after which the baroque roof was completely destroyed.

The Castle belonged to the Haller family of Hallerkö, until 1948 when the comunist gouvenment took it away from them and transformed it into workshop spaces and agricultural production cooperative. After 1989 the building was abandoned, and now it is a ruin.

Currently, the descendants of the Haller family have applied for the return of the castle and five hectares of the former park with poplars and chestnuts.

Description

edit

The building is 24,5 meters long, with an entrance marked by six stone columns with ionic capitals. The columns support a terrace 9.5 meters long and 2.5 wide. The walls are massive, with a thickness of 1 meter.

The precinct of the building was surrounded by a stone wall of which a small part has been preserved, and on the left side of the entrance wall are the ruins of the built circular tower.
