In answer to your question about classical civilization philosophers, they are listed chronologically in the Timeline of Western philosophers. But be sure to include Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Xenophon, for sure. I hope this helps. Go for it! 12:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Why the "template touch": to remove dependencies

I was trying to cleanup an old and outmoded redirect in the mainspace. The redirct is not linkified here to avoid yet another depedency:

• "Wikipedians in the United Kingdom" → Category:Wikipedians in the United Kingdom

I have fixed it in Template:Wikipedians In The United Kingdom (Do a diff via history to see what I mean). You have to actually touch the User: pages to get them not to show up on this report:

• Special:Whatlinkshere/Wikipedians in the United_Kingdom

The problem is that that, while on the screen, the template change takes effect immediately, it does not automatically do so within the dependency info. If the dependency info is not zero, it becomes hard to argue that the thing should be deleted.

I just did the rest (abou a half dozen). Now, I can finally go about {{rfd}}'ing the mainspace page "Wikipedians in the United Kingdom". Why bother? Becuase it is in the mainspace. If it had been in the Wikipedia: namespace, I would not have cared.

Portal drive complete

I got that new browsebar up on all the portals. While I was updating those, it dawned on me to do the same thing for the upper levels of all the classification schemes included in the browsebar (overviews, categories, lists of lists, etc.). Macros

There's a Wikipedia article on it: Macro#Keyboard macros.

Macros are a way to automate keystroke patterns, assigning them to hotkeys, so you don't have retype the same thing over and over. So, when you are on a Wikipedia page, you press a hotkey (like Ctrl-Z), and it modifies the page automatically in whatever way you programmed the macro to do it. Generally the computer is much faster at inputing keystrokes than humans, so it speeds things up considerably.

To use macros on your browser, you need a 3rd-party macro program, like Macro Express.

Dablink

{{Dablink}} is a template that gives consistent formatting to the disambiguation text at the top of an article. Besides indenting and italicizing the text, it also adds a CSS class around the text called "dablink" that allows disambiguation text on a page to be recognized. Other disambig templates besides Dablink also use the "dablink" CSS class for consistency, including {{Otheruses}} and {{Redirect}}. Dablink should be used when someone might end up at an article when they intend to find something else; the disambig links point them either to the right page or a disambiguation page. Sherlock Holmes

Trouble, is to do such a move, I'd need to be an admin (to delete the redirect Sherlock Holmes → Sherlock Holmes novel series and move Sherlock Holmes (character) back to Sherlock Holmes). I still find it strange that Sherlock did not fight Jack the Ripper. I remember reading some were That he was in 5 of the stories and on 1 accassion it turned out Holmes was the Ripper and he was on a wild goose chase around london. oh welll. SaintDante 14:43, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

I found the book. The title is Encyclopedia of serial killers. And under Serial killers in fiction and film it states " Jack the ripper matched wits whith master detective Sherlock Holmes at least 8 times. ( In one bizarre outing, Holmes was the ripper, plagued by mulitiple personalities as he chased himself through fog shrouded london.) That is what the book says. But i have read all but the last book. "The Case Book Of herlock Holmes." I dont know why the book lies but i am prety sure now that the ripper doesnt apear in the books. Fan fiction maybe? Tauroctony

The tauroctony is an artistic representation unique to Mithraism. It is a ritual killing but not necessarily a sacrifice; its meaning to initiates is mostly unknown because of the dearth of written evidence relating to Mithraism. There is no evidence that Mithraists sacrificed bulls (except for a couple of inscriptions now considered to be 19th-century forgeries). The taurobolium, on the other hand, is definitely a sacrifice. It is associated closely with Meter and Attis, but not with Mithras. Both involve the killing of a bull in a ritual context, but not all bull sacrifices are taurobolia.

My main sorces of information for the tauroctony and taurobolium are Manfred Klauss' and David Ulansey's books on Mithraism, and Robert Duthoy's fairly exhaustive survey of evidence on the taurobolium. (I recently revised the article on the taurobolium, when I added it as a source.) The two are confused quite often, so rather than revert it again, I'll hold off until I can dig up some more exact information. It's nice to know someone is paying attention! Sorry for any confusion. You are absolutely correct of course. No, the point I was making was that he did not return WITH an amputated arm - he left it in Patagonia, so "returned with an arm amputated".

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

Hi Pydos,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

• Each casebook will have a subpage.

• Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
• It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
• Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.

• I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.

2. If you're a law student,

• Email http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:Hornbook to your classmates, and tell them to do the same.
