January 2012 newsletter for WikiProject United States and supported projects

The WikiProject United States Newsletter
January 2012

Project news

We hope everyone had a happy holidays and hope that the New year greets you well. As with most December months editing was down somewhat as everyone enjoyed the holidays with their families and spent time relaxing not thinking about the Wonderful world of Wikipedia. In light of the decrease in editing the project got a lot of tasks completed and paved the way for a lot of work to be done in the new year.

Mistletoe post card

Let me start by saying we are going to try and make the newsletter more interesting. Some editors have suggested its a bit dry and generic so we are going to work on that.

As some of you may know, over the past few months we have been working on determining the activity levels of the US related projects and we have completed that analysis. All of the projects that relate to United States topics were contacted about collaboration and support and many accepted the offer. A year ago only a couple projects were supported by WikiProject United States and now we have 60 projects we fully support and 5 more that are Joint projects maintained by us as well as other projects such as WikiProject Military History. By having multiple parent projects supported these US related topics we will increase visibility and traffic to the articles as well as increase collaboration between projects for the betterment of the articles and Wikipedia. Although we may continue to add projects as the project grows the tempo of that will be greatly reduced going forward.

During December Kumioko was able to get his bot, Kumi-Taskbot through the bot approval process to automate a few of the tasks previously done manually and using that bot we completely transitioned the remaining 75, 000 articles into the WikiProject United States banner with the corresponding supported project. The bot continues to perform maintenance on the articles and the article talk pages and should allow us to spend much less time on mundane tasks and more time developing articles. Some of the items that the bot will be performing include:

  1. Converting WikiProject banners
  2. Adding the appropriate WikiProject banner to additional articles
  3. Sending out this newsletter
  4. fix problems with the WikiProject banners such as invalid formatting, parameter addition and replacement, and other talk page cleanup related functions.
  5. Future tasks will include fixing problems on article pages as well as other tasks as needed.

If you have a suggestion for a task that could be done by a bot and pertains to United States related articles please leave a note on Kumioko's talk page for consideration.

Articles of note

This section highlights some of the US related content that has been promoted to Featured Status in the last 2 months:
Note:Articles pertain to one or more of the WikiProjects relating to United States topics but not necessarily WikiProject United States.

Events and meetups
December events
  • Wikimedia DC hosted Fine Art Edit-a-Thon and GLAM-WIKI Meetup on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C.! During the Edit-a-thon they had 18 new articles created or improved.

The GLAM project was very active the last couple months with United States related activities and tasks and they could use more help. If you are interested in Art, libraries, museums or other areas relating to antiquity all are encouraged to participate. They have several projects relating to the Smithsonian institution, National archives, Children's Museum of Indianapolis and several others.

Upcoming events

Wikipedia day cupcakes
  • There is another DC meetup scheduled for sometime in January TBD. If you are interested in attending the information can be found here.
  • January 15 is known as Wikipedia Day to Wikipedians. On this date in the year 2001, the wiki-based Wikipedia project went public after spending five days on Nupedia.
  • In 2012, Wiki Loves Monuments will come to the United States. If you are interested in photography or in monuments this might be an interesting event for you. More information is available here.
  • Wikimania 2012 is coming fast. As some may have heard, Washington, D.C., was selected as the 2012 site for Wikimania, and we're down to about 215 days. If you are interested in attending, more information can be found here.

Do you have an event you want everyone to know about? Let us know so we can post it for everyone to see.
Portals and portal related content

The United States portal is getting very close to Featured portal status. With the new push to get a space on the main page for featured portals I would like to start devoting some time to getting this one built up. If anyone would like to help out with this leave a message on the talk page here.

In addition to Portal:United States Portal:Supreme Court of the United States was recently promoted to featured status as well. We have a lot of portals related to the United States that could be promoted relatively quickly and with minimal work. If you have any recommendations for a portal that you would like to get promoted please let the project know.

Collaboration
The collaboration for January 2012 is the The Star-Spangled Banner

The collaboration candidate for last month was Hope Diamond with few edits being made to the article for the month.

There are currently two collaboration candidates for February: Great Depression in the United States and the United States Postal Service

Some other possibilities for future collaborations can be found on the collaborations talk page and are: Camp David, the White House, Charles Lindbergh and Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. If one of these sounds like a good candidate please add it to the list of candidates or add your own if you have some ideas about an article that would make a good collaboration.

Future improvements
  • Adding infoboxes to the articles that need them
  • Assessing the articles that need it
  • Adding the articles that are still missing
  • A major redesign of the newsletter which will make it easier to update, make it more attractive and leave a smaller footprint on the talk pages
  • Fill in To do tasks for all supported projects
  • Make sure that all projects have Article alerts, Recognized content, popular pages and Project Watchlists.
  • Recruit for the projects. There are lots of editors working on the articles already. We just need to get them interested in the projects again.

If any of these sound interesting to you please feel free to help out.

Non-free rationale for File:The Bismarck Tribune front page.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:The Bismarck Tribune front page.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:55, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 5

Hi. When you recently edited List of convention centers named after people, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Georgia (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello Presidentman. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Philip Henry (artist), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Article claims coverage in reliable sources. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 01:07, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 22:05, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Science lovers wanted!

Science lovers wanted!

Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! Sarah (talk) 02:21, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:56, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

Ichthus: May 2012

ICHTHUS

May 2012

From the Editor

This month marks the observation of Pentecost, one of the most important feast of the Christian liturgical year. It is our hope here that all of you, regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), find that the holiday, and its accompanying activities, an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also hope that this "Birthday of the Church" is one which gives you the same joy as the birthday of yourself or your loved ones.

Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. You might also see links to Christianity related news from the mainstream media!

With that, I wish you all happy reading!

John Carter, Asst. Editor

P.S. Please click here to add the new Christianity-related topics Noticeboard to your watchlist to follow the latest discussions relevant to WikiProject Christianity and subprojects.

Help Bring Wikipe-tan "into the fold"

As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Please post your images here.

Christianity in other wikis

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

Spotlight on the Outreach department

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. The broader the spectrum and areas of expertise of members we have, the better we will be able to help manage the content. Please consider whether you believe you might be able to contribute in this vital area.

Non-free rationale for File:Secretariat in the Preakness.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Secretariat in the Preakness.jpg.

Thank you. Fut.Perf. 22:40, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

National Popular Vote Interstate Compact

I just noticed that you removed the comment signs around a lot of states in the long table in this article. This had the effect that lots of outdated information became visible ("pending" etc.). Please read the text above the table. Basically, I put in the comment signs to make it easy to put in new bills in later years by overwriting the text and uncommenting; the text could also be deleted.
